The Weekender: Wolsung, Bikers & A New 40K Starter Set?
July 12, 2014 by dignity
It's Saturday and that means it's Weekender time! We'll be diving back into the Wolsung Kickstarter as it comes towards its final few days on Kickstarter and also revving up our engines for a look at the new Gale Force Nine board game, Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem!
As well as that we chat all things Stormclaw and this new boxed set from Games Workshop for Warhammer 40,000 - Space Wolves & Orks, what's not to love!
Justin also gets to sit down with Carlos from Corvus Belli and talk Infinity (themed week in the works!) and there's even an inkling of a prize for our Backstagers too - an Iguana Squad!
Warren is also off on his holidays so he talks gaming on the go and of course we announce the winner of Reznik The Wrath of Ages from last weeks show!
Quite a bumper episode I'd say!

Warren, that yellow sub (called “the flying sub” is from an American TV show called “Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea”
I was just about to say that, myself!
Loved the flying sub, but I can’t remember the name of the main submarine, with the cool hatch underneath for the little sub.
Seaview was the main sub.
What about Stingray…that could leave the water
I’ve got my coffee, i’ve got my confortable sofa, i’m ready for a new episode of BoW Weekender !
Hi guys ! Always a pleasure to see you on Saturday morning with my coffee mug !
See you tomorrow !
Lots to do this saturday – better watch this before the chores begin!
Think I’ll head on over to Starbucks and watch my weekender there this morning.
Good to see you all mentioning Deep Wars. Its a decent little game that I have backed twice now on KS.
Yes, some Deep Wars coverage would be great :). I’m definitely going to be picking this one up.
On the subject of summer gaming, we are taking the latest MTG fat pack (unopened) with us. I am now worried that it will be too competitive ! It was the wife’s idea not mine so maybe her idea of a holiday is grinding me into the ground!
good show, west wind productions do a range called road kill that has bikers
For the shimmering water look, for an easy way to do it, shine the light through a fan, or even take a large transparent platter with water in it and hang it under the light.
For coral, paint up some of the more rough lava rock. Use it in conjunction with foam similar to some of the wood chip hills commonly used
There is a biker dwarf bloodbowl team dome by Neomics. It has a couple of guys on bikes as well.
Best co-op games for me are zombicide and pandemic. Both very thematic and a lot of fun win or lose.
Enjoy your break Warren.
STORMCLAW: http://www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/Sanctus-Reach-Stormclaw-EN
Two forces from existing sprues except for an ‘exclusive boss’ each, with small format 40k rules. £75
& 32 page Stormclaw Campaign Supplement contains three missions that use the miniatures in the box
It’s about £105 in australia, apparently GW still hates us…
$150 in Canada. Sadly I swore off buying GW stuff, but it is still fun to see the new pretties…
I have tickets to an Angel masterclass and his seminar. Smug mode engaged 🙂
Nice Ben, hope you have a good break away, youve earnt it for all your hard work over the years. 🙂
Thanks 🙂
I missed the master class but I will be at the Angel and Bostira seminars.
Maybe we can talk Cb into having a few beers at the meet up.
Hells Angels chopper riders for IG Rough riders… HELLZ YEAH
Holiday game… Plop Trumps… *Jokes*
Have a great break Warren 🙂 and I’ll look forward to next weeks show!
How about Pandemic as a holiday game? It’s a co-op, the box is small, and it doesn’t have a big set-up.
A nice game which i recently had with me in my last holiday with my girlfriend is Game of Thrones HBO edition card game. It is competitive but very narrative, characters that we all love, excellent replayability thanks to the several plot cards, and it doesn’t break conversation. I actually suggest it if you are fan of the TV show (who isn’t?), and i found it perfect has holiday game. Highly recommended!
Infinity is testing my resolve quite a bit, my wallet shudders.
I can’t wait to see what Angels secret project is
My favourite camping game so far is The Duke. Fantastic little game, all those wooden tiles, gas camping light for illumination – very cool.
Unfortunately, it’s basically chess on steroids; so it’s competitive and has no narrative – not what you were looking for at all!
Try Roadkill models for bikers even includes werewolf biker gang for weird fans
Good show as always guys looking forward to the Ice Storm stuff
You learn all sorts of strange things on the weekender…. stripper glitter?
The most played game on camping trips was farting contests (I never won)
Zombies Keep Out is a good co-op game. I would also suggest Pandemic. Also try Elder Sign or Space Hulk Death Angel by FFG.
Also the Star Trek and Resident Evil deck building games have co-op game modes.
so what you have to do to win Iguana set from infinity?
You just did it.
Lord of the rings lcg from fantasy flight is a damn fine co op game, and can be fiendishly difficult.
Yeah, agreed. Although I love the Pathfinder ACG the setup time and the sheer number of cards is something I wouldn’t want to deal with while camping.. so I agree that the Lord of the Rings LCG base set would be a great idea. It’s about.. £25, it’s a great cooperative experience and if you build two decks before you go away, you can leave the box at home and fit all the components in a tupperware box.
You could try “The Quiet Year” a narrative map drawing game. You just need a deck of cards and a pen & paper.
A really good cooperative and story-driven board game to play with your other half and children is mice and mystics.
Glad to hear ya love my part of the country so much Warren, have a blast matey and a verry well deserved break.
Great start to a Saturday morning before work. Please keep up the excellent work guys.
Ahh, County Wicklow.. we went their on our honeymoon and did one of those horse-drawn caravan holidays. It was.. interesting. The scenery around Glendalough was nice, though 🙂
the force is strong with Infinity…….the Icestorm coverage may push me over the top and have my wallet silently weeping
I just would like to thank the Beasts of War team for all their great work and support of all things miniature.
Another great Weekender. It slowly becomes a ritual for me to sit down on saturday mornings with a coffee and watch this.
Stormclaw looks very promising. Agree with the guys – hope this is the start of a new trend.
let the weekend begin!
GW is over.
If Warren like tentacles so much there are some interesting Anime he could watch…
Once the v3 rules arrive I’m looking to get in to Infinity. A free shiny red robot would really help encourage me. Really looking forward to seeing the new rules.
An option for games COULD be Sentinels of the Multiverse box is a little bigger than the ones Justin showed but not much, lots of content and its cooperative to boot.
To play with 2 people all u have to do is pick 2 heroes each.
There are very few manufacturers with biker gangs (that might change with the coming boardgame)
From memory and a few search here are a few links:

In holiday, i would take “classic” games, card games (tarot, basic 54 card set), Offboard, chess, go, backgammon and so on (easy to pack/not too long to play…)
IMO, Miniatures games are too complcated too take on a trip without breaking some parts & losing pieces, maybe you could try dreadball (not too much material, two teams)
Great show fellas – the perfect soundtrack to my cleaning up and assembling another Bren Carrier
Nice vid again. Really looking forward to the Infinity content, as I said in the forum thread, the first Infinity week got me into the game.
Now I’ve chosen to spend my hobby budget on the Inifinity boxset over the new 40K one. In 3 years it has more or less replaced 40K in my sci-fi wargaming,For someone who has played 40K since 2nd edition, that is not something I would have thought would happen.
can’t wait to see operation icestorm WEEK
and the infinity week after ^^
lord of the rings lcg! my wife is not into anything like gaming but she will play that and enjoys it!
and its co-op
So much happening at Corvus Belli at the moment, I just hope the new Fusiliers are much better than the previous sculpts. Can’t wait to read the new 3rd ed. Quickstarter rules!
An infinity main event in spain? A location that’s remotely plausible to attend.
Most of the wargamming stuff is always located around america it’l be nice to have somewhere much closer and cheaper to be able to go.
I’m curious though, only 80 players? I can’t see there being so few, is it invitational? What happens if hundreds turn up?
If any of the BoW team are talking to Corvus again, could you ask them if there ever going to do any more 15mm historicals
Stripper Gliiter?….I think if you needed some then next time your in GW Belfast I am sure there are a few shops in Gresham Street out the back of Castle Court that would sell that sort of stuff
UFO also had a flying sub
Pandemic is a good co-operative game but an old friend of mine also recommended Forbidden Island so that might be worth a look.
On the bike front, does anyone remember the Squat choppers from 40K?
What is ‘The Serpents and the Wolf’? I see it behind Warren. (Yes yes, I could just google it, but then that takes the social part of being on this social site out of it. 😀 )
that’s an expansion for the Spartacus board game adds 2 new houses new fights in the arena and new cards to play
Great show as normal guys and @dignity, Justin that was a great interview with Carlos. Well done sir you’ve certainly got a good, relaxed but professional style it seems to me. As for co-op games, that’s kind of been my starting point for getting into board games in the last year or so. Pandemic would always be my number one shout – love the almost cinematic narrative feel to it and you can always play more than one role each as well as mixing up the difficulty to give more variety. It’s small, easily transportable and best of all you can just sub the different viruses for types of zombie for a different theme (gives it a great twist in my mind!). Love, love, love that game!
Would also add my voice to LoTR LCG – great gaming experience but very dangerous to get into with so many lovely expansions (who cares if I need them when the art is SO pretty!). Similarly I would suggest Thunderstone too, a great deck-building dungeon crawl experience with plenty of development and narrative scope. Sounds like Nightfall a bit from Justin’s explanation but with a fantasy theme and challenge of balancing development of your deck/party (characters, abilities and equipment) with the advance of the baddies and need for loot/exp – great game. In fact I’m going to dig it out this avo, and Pandemic too!
Have a lovely time whatever you do Warren!
The ‘Grasscutters’…who was that guy you said could make up a rule set for any scenario? You mentioned him on a weekender months and months back.. something about a creek …anyway.. get him to make you some rules about Grasscutting and put in a Kickstarter… I would soooo back that game.
If you want Bikers try Westwind in their Road kill range or Copplestone castings or Foundry have abiker gang in their Street violence range.
Hey warren, I know you didn’t want a game with miniatures but you should really consider Zombicde prison break. Me and the wife played it 2 player using 2 characters each and it was great fun. It has a ton of ready to go missions but scales well to custom campaigns. Although it is mini heavy I find for what you get it all packs away very nicely in the box. Altogether I think you would find yourself enjoying many an evening zombie killing amongst the backdrop of eerie camp lights. Hope this helps either way enjoy the trip 🙂
I second that, great game
Warren. For a good holiday game, look into Cards of Cthulhu. Nice simple set up, easy to learn rules, and a very engaging co-op or competitive game.
great show as always guys.
Great show as always guys, I haven’t played to many co-op games but have you seen that Modiphius Entertainment is releasing a co-op Thunderbirds game later next year.
Ah, the weekender. A great excuse to stay in bed a few more minutes on Saturday.
Stormclaw managed to part the wife with her money, I expect Icestorm will get mine…
I live a couple of hours from Indy, but haven’t ever hit Gen-con. Mostly because I spend a couple of weeks before that at a medieval re-living camping event that drains my bank account. But if you guys are coming over next year, I think I will start a gen-con fund now. I have said it before, but it is you guys that have re-awakened the geek in me for gaming and not just buying the occasional mini and painting it up for my collection.
Stop tempting me with another KickStarter!
My wife and I took the Star Trek deck building game on holiday. She was familiar with TNG, so we were able to enjoy that more than other games. But Pandemic is good, or Dungeon Roll. If you can find it, try the two player version of LaHavre called The Inland Port. Once you get the hang of it, it’s golden.
Two Infinity weeks this year!? YES! Can’t wait for operation Icestorm!
Hi there, great show keep up the good work. A few suggestions for light and compact games are the following :
Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards (Cryptozoic Entertainment)
Forbidden Desert Game (Gamewright)
Guillotine
No Thanks (Z-man)
Love Letters (AEG)
Coup (indie)
Tsuro – The Game of the Path
Have fun
Great vid again boys
Just finished lunch and sat down to watch the video. Winning the Iguana after a great show would just be icing on the cake.
King of Tokyo seems like it’d be a good travel game with the kids
I have been a player and collector of 40k and warhammer fantasy for 15 years I enjoy playing both. But yesterday I was looking at the new starter set and thought to myself could I really be bothered I already have a ork army and I have two marine army’s black temps and dark angels although space wolfs are cool I just looked at it and thought I. Any be bothered. I have cel like this about gw a lot recently after the initial shiny syndrome wears off I’m just like what more can I really get out of these game. In fairness I have a huge collection and if I was only starting outi would be interested but £75 I could get into drop zone or fow for so much less for so much more. Has any one else felt they have gone as far as they can go with a games system? I’m not going to stop playing writing my own campaigns or having fun but as far as the miniatures go I think I’m done which saddens me. I have been loving hordes recently and dreadball are so much fun. Does any one know of any none gw games shops in Belfast NI that stock hordes and warmachine and other games forbidden planet doesn’t have much. If you do please PM me.
To be fair, 15 years with one game is a heck of a long time no matter what the game is. It’s a lot longer than I’ve gamed anything, at least consecutively. @dignity might be a good person to let you know where to get WM minis in NI.
Great episode, and the Iguana is a great prize. I’m REALLY looking forward to the upcoming Infinity stuff, both from the ‘reveals’ over the summer and what you guys have already recorded. The CB interviews and such is what keeps me coming back to BoW
A decently narrative cooperative game is Fantasy Flights Lord of the Rings LCG starter. It sounds like you guys like card games and this one is very story based. One starter will play one or 2 players, and two starters plays up to 4. It’s best with 4 but we’ve had some fun with the 2 player version as well.
Pandemic and Forbidden Desert are both good coop games for your holiday, Warren.
Forbidden Desert could work, but Pandemic would take too long to set up and have too many bits to lose for Warren’s needs.
I don’t find Pandemic takes long to set up and the petri dishes in On the Lab keep everything neat.
Hey guys!
Thanks for a great show.
Warren, you should bring Zombicide. You play it together against the zombies, has a short set-up time, the feel of a miniatures game and having different scenarios it becomes like a small campaign. The only downside might be that the box is a bit big and it does contain a bunch of miniatures.
As an Anime and gaming fan I’m sure I’m not alone in having a “NO TENTACLES” rule.
Hide the sub is a good two player game (but not if it’s yellow)
Is that like “Hide the Salami” (where yellow is also a bad color)?
Great show as always, very jealous of that dreadball prize it’s a fantastic game.
As far as wardens holiday game goes one that satisfies all but one of his needs is gloom. Very small, plastic cards are virtually indestructible, it is competitive however it feels very cooperative as you have to really work together to tell the narrative of each character!
Silly auto correct I meant Warren not warden. Although we could call him the warden of wargaming world as a kind of honourific title…
Copplestone Castings for Bikers !
Used them for my Shadowrun campaign. all the players were members of a biker gang. 🙂
Good show again guys !
‘Pandemic’ is a very good 2 player Co-op game that isn’t too long, has a narrative & doesn’t have too big a box to transport around…
Hello Warren its from a show called sea quest, or sea view with fling subs.
Seaview was the name of the sub. The program was “Voyage to the bottom of the sea.”
http://youtu.be/PB_xjNhc3n0
Oh boy, what I would give to go to GenCon to take part in one of Angel Giraldez’s painting masterclasses and seminars. Redben, I am very jealous, I hope you have a great time.
…You should give gloom http://www.atlas-games.com/product_tables/AG1250.php a try @warzan…..it´s absolutely fun!!!!!!!!!!!!
Compact co-op games…
Lord of the Rings LCG
D&D board games
– Castle Ravenloft
– Wrath of Ashardelon
– Legend of Drizzt
Death Angel
Forbidden Island
Pandemic
My husband and I were racking our brains for games –
Now for a quick play – not much narrative and your daughter could play – Zombie Dice….it is fast paced and so much fun. We can play for hours with tons of chatter and laughter. And it is small to pack away,
There is the Pathfinder card game – called the Pathfinder Adventure Card game.
or if you want to play against each other which could be fun! 2 player Settlers of Catan. My husband and I play this and it gets really competitive and fun!
Have a wonderful time!!!
“There is the Pathfinder card game – called the Pathfinder Adventure Card game”
I’m a big fan of this myself but the downside for a holiday game is the gigantic box.
For a water effect light set up check out the MBT Shimmer Effect Water Light it’s $149.99 or a similar set up, just do a search for shimmer effect water light.
Those new Infinity figs look awesome.
My Nomad force is short one Iguana 🙂
But to add something more constructive; I don’t think you need to go to exotic places to get that ‘stripper glitter’. If I’m correct it’s the kind of stuff you can get at a specialised make-up store or perhaps even the kind of shop that sells costumes and other articles for parties.
This is the second weekender I’ve seen and I’m hooked. Good job guys I really enjoyed it!
That is a very nice looking T.A.G
Thanks for another great Weekender!
The Wolsung Kickstarter is worth it for the terrain alone!
I don’t even play Infinity and I’m excited for another Infinity week…. Such pretty minis!
Warren, just take Pandemic.
Pandemic is a Zman game.
The concept is that you work together to stop four world wide pandemics. It is a co-op game of 2-4 players. It takes 40 minutes to play. Set up is quick and break down is quick. You get to pick from different characters that give you special powers.
The best part is that it takes minutes to learn the game. The rules are very simple, figuring out the changing puzzle is not. When you win you feel like you accomplished something even in the easy version. Then you can play harder versions that the hardest versions are extreme challenges.
It is a dynamic event. There are multiple ways to lose the game, but only one way to win, “Find the cures to four diseases.”
Cheap, fast, small footprint when packed up. Oh, and since the cards are not positioned for the board, just the game AI, good even when there is a breeze.
I love the look of the minis for Infinity. The sculpts are amazing and the way that the studio presents them is even more amazing.
Started to watch that, but the first thing that bored into my brain was your horrendous misspelling of the word COMMENT… for fraks sake, you’re supposed to be professionals. Use correct spelling.
Glad to hear the BOW backstage community is getting bigger. Loving it myself.
Enjoy camping
Warren, you and Andrea should try Pathfinder the adventure card game. I think you would get a lot of mileage from it and it is cooperative with a skew to building your characters up over multiple games ;0)
@warzan if you want water affects try making a larger version of the wee fan things on tee lights that spin’s by the heat from the flame make it from coloured glass or plastic using the heat from one of your stage lights?
The infinity models look really awesome. I’m also looking forward to the 3rd edition rules.
Another brilliant informative show thanks.
What about lighting the board from the bottom? Use a clear sheet of plastic with a blue light shining through? Or you could build it on a clear box with some water in it and shine the light through. Might be a lot easier than swing light down.
For you lighting effects watch the latest episode of Switch at Birth. They used a party light and some lighting gels to do a similar effect.
Stripper Gliter and Tentacles in the Deep Ocean with Steampunk Safari Ladies O.o, yeeeeeeeeeeeeep!
Maybe I am odd, but I am great with GW’s use of regular sprues. DV was a bit different, and nice, but I got started in the hobby after years of eyeing AOBR. At the time, a friend of mine also got in but opted to just start buying Space Marines. My little AOBR push fits looked so bad (despite better painting) next to his “real” tacticals and terminators.
I know they’d never do it, but I wish GW would just figure out a way to easily and cost-effectively get people into the hobby. (Think Privateer Press’s starter sets for each army.) It takes so much work on my part to educate friends who are genuinely interested into making the comparatively high investment to get started in 40k. Not just money, but mental commitment too, before you’re even “ok” to play a game of modest size. This seems closer to that, so I’ll take it. I wish it wasn’t limited run, though… What happens when you want to start a SW army in February? :D.
Great show chaps and can’t wait for the Infinity content. In term of great coop games definitely second Pandemic. Got introduced to that by BOW Ben at one of th tabletop nation days when BOW was in England and loved it straight away. However there are quite a few little components etc and it can also sometimes be a little long, especially if you have younger ones involved. So I old highly recommend Forbiden Island from the same author. Uses very similar mechanics but is a lot easier to get to grips with, changes each time so loads of replay- ability and the artwork is fantastic. Check out this link for more details
http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/65244/forbidden-island. Not expensive either and the pieces for the treasures are cool too. There are multiple levels of difficulty you can set and it’s entirely coop with you taking on the roles of the diver, engineer or pilot etc. to collect the treaures before the island sinks so if you have younger ones, not much space and want something easy to setup/put away and you can create some narrative around I would highly recommend it. Did i mention the island tiles are fantastic? So much so if you have younger kids and want too make up stories associated with each of the island locations that’s pretty fun to as the names and artwork are quite imaginative. Humming the Indiana jones theme tune as you get close to collecting a treasure entirely optional ;).
can’t recommend this game highly enough, all the fun of Pandemic but probably a bit simpler and more accessible. As you can tell this is a fair favourite in our house!
For a more competitive game thats easy to take on hols we fell in love with Lords of War having had a demo at Salute. We have four of The armies/packs and this is also a space saver, super fun and simple enough to play but very strategic if you want it to be. No blind decks, everything you need in each army pack so two packs and your away. Definitely one of my son’s and my favourites now. Those are my two hot holiday gaming favourites.
stormclaw will have a mini just the rules book
carcasan and tsuro are great travel games
I haven’t watched much sons of anarchy but the idea of having a biker gang and recruiting/fighting/dealing drugs etc. as a game just blows my mind. And yes we need some cool guys on harley davidsons as miniatures.
Another quality show, really liked the interview, it is nice to get into the head of our miniature companies.
With how often Carlos is in your studios, you’d think by now he’d have some kind of specialized chair: Some sci-fi throne of sorts!
Its nice to here that someone else experienced ‘sudden star wars removal syndrome’. For the longest time I thought it was my only my mum who could give such treasure away.
Love the reminiscing, takes me right back to my childhood.
I tend to take HIVE with me when I go backpacking, but I understand the desire for narrative
Since your wife is a MTG fan already, I think a good choice for you guys would be NETRUNNER
1) I know it’s competitive, however, the game is a-symmetrical – the role and gameplay of the runner and the corporation are independent and different enough that it doesn’t feel like you’re two fighters slogging it out with each other until one falls; rather it really feels like a cat and mouse chase game that focuses on strategic moves, daring risks and close calls. You’re never really down to the point of no return in netrunner, there’s always a chance for a comeback – some players might lose the game but it’s rare that they feel beaten
1.5) Also, a full game has a switch of sides, so even if you feel that a particular deck beat you a little too handily, you can go ahead and choose that same deck for your turn – even if you lose, you at very least learn how to beat the deck for next time 😉
2) everything you need to play, including 7 fully balanced decks (3 runner & 4 corp) are right in the starter box – 12 different match-ups possible, each with fairly unique strategies, there’s a lot of choice and variety right out of the box, months of play, let alone weeks.
3) it’s got built in narrative; more so than MTG, the personalities of the different runner decks and corps are seeded in every card, you feel like the criminal hackers are very much in it for burn and profit, covering their traces while draining corp accounts; while the shaper faction is all about technique and style, attacking servers with the right tools for the right job, freeing the information for all to enjoy; similarly Haas-biroid is an incredibly advanced firm, complex systems, intricate protection mazes, above all, maintain a good public image while Jinteki cares less about public image and more about securing their secrets at any cost, lethal security barriers, hidden code traps, deadly hit squads; they keep a runner on their toes
4) it’s got the je ne sais quoi appeal – I’ve got a variety of non-gamers friends and I try games out with them, some are hard to get people into because of intricate rules or cost: Through the Ages, 40k; others are more appealing to some and get a few people into the game ticket to ride, shogun; others are universally enjoyed: space alert, arkham horror – and then there are a few games, that when people try them, they buy into them after a game – Infinity is one of those games where a significant number whose played it has immediately picked up a starter box (many non-war gamers in those numbers), and NETRUNNER is another – playing the game seems to sell starter sets; netrunner, among my friends, has a nearly 100% tried and bought a copy – for a card game I found that amazing
Anyways, my 2€ and suggestion; I’m sure there are some who disagree,
Have a great trip!
I just used several years’ worth of hobby funds on a used bike. Might just as well go all in, watch the show and get the game. 😀 enjoy your well earned holiday Warren.
Looks like its time for me to join infinity this Gen Con.
If memory serves me, years and years ago (10 or so plus) when I was a black shirt for G-Dubz, I seem to recall that the concept of having multiple starter sets each with its own campaign was being discussed. So wouldn’t discount that theory at all chaps.
Infinity is a bit hard to get into. Lots of little rules. But once you get the hang of it. Its pretty cool
I would suggest either Forbidden Island or Pandemic. Both are coop games that work pretty well at two players.
A really good way of portraying a underwater table is to have something like a non game related models like a whale or schools of fish on a stands that appear to be floating. A soon as you add something like underwater afilited items it immediately adds an underwater impression.
Love the Wolsung card deck! That is just going to be a joy to have. 🙂
Stormclaw: I haven’t read everyones comments or looked into it but Justins idea of limited release ‘starter sets’ for each latest pair of army codexes seems interesting. The “limited” part is a shame, but hopefully that is just the low price is limited offer rather than the actual set?
Awesome to see Carlos on The Weekender. Good interview Justin, we got to hear a lot from Carlos! 😉
That life size Spitfire will be awesome! Whoever wins that is going to be one happy Infinity player!
Bootleg Penthesilea is gorgeous but the Tabitha Lyons Limited Edition Infinity Cosplay Miniature is a simply brilliant idea. A great way to honour their guest cosplayer and do something special for the Gen Con Infinity fans.
Oh and… Operation Icestorm! Operation! Icestorm! Op-er-a-tion Ice-oh-yeah-storm!
Slightly excited about this… 🙂
As for a couples co-op game I recommend ‘Escape: The Curse of the Temple’ a fun dice based game – fast , simple, and fun! And of course there is always Pandemic (my favourite) – either 2 players with 6 epidemics, or just take 2 roles each.
Enjoy your holiday Warren!
Tempted by the Infinity minis, if not the game (seems like Deadzone does much the same thing as it but in a smaller space and less complex). In saying that, I’ve got a whole load of minis I’ve bought ‘just to paint’ that I’ve never got round to, well, painting.
Aaargh, so many lovely gen con infinity exclusives
Wish I could raid the bank and take time off work to go to all the events with Corvus Beli. Maybe next year, I will be at Gen Con.
Someone else has probably answered this but the flying sub was, “Voyage to the bottom of the Sea”.
I’d go with Pandemic for a 2 player co-op on holiday. Other people who’s opinions I respect recommended Race for the Galaxy.
Sigh, replying to myself again…
If you have an iPad there is a great Pandemic version on that device, it’s a pass and play implementation. Can’t get much more compact than that.
Love this show,
and can´t wait to see 3rd edition infinity. how can you show us the starterpack in the background and expect us to wait another week to see what´s inside? this new kind of pomoting infinity is hell.
Two possible games are Forbidden Island and Forbidden Desert. Both of them come in tins which is good for travel. Alternatively there is Battlelines which is card based game. If you like Magic you might be interested in trying some of the living cad games from Fantasy flight games, Netrunner, Star Wars LCG (both competitive) and Lord of the rings (co-operative).
Another great show guys, thanks to everyone for their thoughts on co-op games. Going on holiday soon so was looking for something different to take along.
@Warren I know it has miniatures but its definitely is co-operative but why not bring Myth?
Would you guys please stop posting all this Wolsung goodness? I have enough problems controlling my gamer ADD as it is. You really don’t need to make it any worse! 🙂
Smash up is nice and easy! Not exactly co-op, but still funny and communicative. Have a nice vacation!
First great show … As usual 😉
Then, I would suggest you Zombicide : co-op game, tons of scenarios (in the game and internet), easy to settle … Maybe a bit long to put back if you bother to store it well … And also Carcassonne … Not co-op but really good game to travel with …
Warren take Pandemic by Z-man games. It is a co op board game. My fiance and I play it together a lot we each control 2 of the tokens. and we can beat the game about 50% of the time.
How much cooler the mech can be? It has guns, it looks awesome and it has a lizard’s tail! That is one super-awesome model.
Both beasts and war in the same video
A decent source of biker stuff

I PM’d this on facebook, but in case any other readers want bikers I’m copying it here too
As I type this the new White Dwarf has been spotted with Dark Vengeance on the cover lol
i don’t want to be a d*ck but that 15 minutes listening about Stormclaw was painful. Getting newbies and kids to put together KILLER KANS is a good way to introduce them to the hobby eh?…. no.
I know you said the last 15 minutes could all be “sugar” but dudes super seriously!
Stormclaw is a good way of getting existing players into getting a NEW army.
Even worse I bet you the NEW models in Stormclaw (all 2 of them) are snap-fit mono-pose models i.e not what you guys claimed was indicative of the hobby (which is increasingly the norm for GW).
Otherwise, a great show as always especially the Infinity stuff.
Really looking forward to Infinity 3rd edition. Ive been getting some games in with my JSA and painting up my Aleph force. Thinking of also going Nomads with the Icestorm box as some of their newer sculpts I really like they are so detailed models.
Great show guys, keep up the good work.
@warzan why don’t you just use a shallow glass tank and actually have an underwater battlefield. yeah you would get wet playing, but would certainly get you in the spirit. Could even put Justin in scuba gear…
Man those Iguana TAGs look freaking awesome. So does Wolsung.
It’s a shame I’m on lay-off, or I’d pledge on it.
For co-op holiday games I would recommend Eldritch Horror… Although probably not for camping. If properly organised it wouldn’t be totally unmanageable on a holiday, but you do need a sizeable table for the board, so probably not for you this time.
Otherwise, Pandemic could be good, depending on the gaming personalities playing. I think it can suffer if you have a dominant person who directs everyone else, but you’ll know your own gaming group (or partner!) well enough hopefully to be able to judge whether this would be a problem for you.
The Lord of the Rings board game is also a good co-op game. Although again, takes a fair amount of space.
Great show again lads, thanks all. Warren, try looking into Race for the Galaxy as a handy game. Plays really smoothly once you get a handle on the rules and can also be played solo for those lonely nights in
Another great show guys, I would also like to hear more on Deep Wars and that Nomad TAG is just awesome.
Tyranids just came out in January, Justin is right Dark Eldar are rumored to be after Blood Angels. And the Dark Eldar book is still a soft cover and after Space Wolves and Blood Angels is the oldest codex, Necrons and Grey Knights came after.
About Stormclaw, IDK how it is on the GW uk site but its already sold out in America, which is kinda upsetting if they don’t make anymore. Also supposedly these will be sold along side Dark Vengeance when it comes back with the updated rule book. What I don’t understand is why did they pull all the dark vengeance boxes just to put a new rulebook in it and send it back? Why not just send the retailers the new books and have them switch them out and just send the old rulebook back, that seems more cost effective and quicker.
Myth Myth, Myth its right behind Justin, its cooperative. It has the mechanic that has a automated enemy, it also has a mini campaign in the book and is fun type of camping game. Also Super Dungeon Explore is another one with a kind of automated enemy. Both of those are great games and don’t need a bunch of other players like some of the other good coop games.
Warren some other suggestions:
1. Lord of the Rings Card Game (has a collectible aspect, but all needed to start is self contained in box).
Competitive:
1. Hex (a chess-like game with a big theme, comes with a bag and self contained). You build the board.
The iguana is probably one of my favorite looking minis, I’d love to add it to my collection!
For a quick(ish) co-op game try Ghost Stories.
I’ve heard the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game is a good co-op game, but I’ve also heard it can be like 2-player solitaire.. but it’d be easy to take with you at least!
Pandemic is a fantastic co-op. I personally prefer Defenders of the Realm which works along similar lines but the box (and board) is huge!
another great show wish I could go to some of infinity events
OK Games for 2 players:
++Narrative, ++COOP:
Pathfinder Adventure Card Game (Paizo)- 1 to 4 players, basically a roleplaying game in card game form where the deck is the DM, so players all play a character. As you progress through the game more cards become available to you for the next part of the adventure. They have been releasing adventure packs and character packs so when the games get old, add a new adventure pack and go again.
Elder Sign (Fantasy Flight Games) – A dice rolling game where you try to destroy a great old one. Again with numerous great old ones, numerous characters, and rooms appear randomly gives great replay ability.
Sentinels of the Multiverse (Greater than Games) – Superhero card game where you pick a villain and an environment to fight. When you have done that select your heroes and go. With multiple expansions add replay ability for a long time.
A competitive that may work:
Smash Up (AEG) – Again a card game with multiple factions. We love playing this game 2 players more because of the jawing going on. IE my zombie ninjas are going to destroy your steampunk pirates…my wife always plays the steampunk pirates. Deck building is simple take to factions decks and shuffle them together and boom deck. Note: I believe the steampunk faction comes from an expansion.
7 Wonders (Repos Productions, Asmodee) – Take your civilization through 3 ages, score the most points. When we have a half an hour to kill we go to this one. The base game comes with 7 civilizations and the 3rd age has a random component, so every game is different.
I was going to suggest any of the Catan 2 player card games but they seem to be all out of print.
All of these games come in small boxes, Sentinels being the biggest at the size of the old D&D basic set and about twice as thick. All the rest are smaller. All come with everything you need in the box, the most fiddly bits are 7 Wonders and Elder Sign with quite a few counters. Setup for all these games is under 5 minutes many being far less than 5 minutes. The only problem with any of these is they are all card based in some way shape or form, so they may not hold up well to wet when camping, but otherwise they are all great and all get play around my house regularly.
Try Sentinels of the Multiverse. It’s a card deck game where players take the part of superheroes on a team (hence co-operative) fighting against a game-controlled villain with their own deck. Several expansions with new heroes, villains, settings. Kids (who can read) might have fun with it, too.
I like the idea of the two person boxes being the new starter boxes. It will come down to how they pull it off.
That iguana squad looks pretty slick.
I seem to remember a game with Gnomes trying to save a sinking submarine.
Cant remember the game of it though.
@warzan, I totally agree with you for wanting to play cooperative games with your better half. Its much more fun. You can discuss over your tactics, work together and win together. And you don’t end up with one person winning all the time, leaving the other frustrated. I’d suggest (like a lot of people here) pandemic. It makes for a great story – admittedly a story about sick people dying in the thousands, because you weren’t fast enough to save them – but it gives you a great feeling of fighting together against overwhelming odds and saving the world. And with the expansions it gets really tough and complex.
Only competitive games for couples playing alone in my opinion are chess and poker, because you learn a lot about the other person and most people (like me) don’t reach a level of ability, where they win all the time.
Excellent show guys. Watched it on my way to Northern Ireland – felt very apt!
Nice show guys! Infinity truly is getting bigger and better, I’ve noticed more and more people interested in it and actually playing. In my area it’s I guess third in popularity. WH40k, then Hordes/Warmachine, and then Infinity. They do really good job on all the new models, there are lots of “shelf gems” among the releases.
Looks like its gona be a massive year for Corvus Belli. Cant wait to see the new box set and use it to get my group into Infinity! The gnome submarine game is Red November (I see what they did there) , which is a nice little co-op game.
Love Letter is a good, lightweight game but has only the lightest of narratives to it and you’d want another game to go with it. If you can find them I’d suggest one of the FFG games “Scarab Lords” or “Minotaur Lords.”
The Call of Cthulhu LCG is also a great suggestion and plays very well directly out of the starter box. There are also no dice involved, so you don’t have to worry about waking the little ones.
Great show. It’s always nice to be able to watch these on Monday at work.
Great work guys! Love the Carlos interview. It’s going to be an exciting year for Infinity! Wish I can go to GenCon, but winning that Iguana squad will suffice. 😛
I am loving Level 7:Omega Protocol. Before this game didn’t know PP did boardgames!
I can’t wait for Arcadia Quest.
I want every game ever made!
I love the GW Minis I just can not invest the amount of time and money in playing the game. I am hard pressed to find time or players for skirmish type games.
you could try Forbidden Island…..its not very big in espace!!!!!
Infinity is just so full of beautiful miniatures. Perhaps I´m just gonna by some Nomads… and they are coming in the starter set 🙂
Great show as always lads.
I’m going camping too this summer and am packing Pandemic, Carcassonne and Love Letter. Carcassonne out of the box will fit in a small clothe bag and Love Letter will fit in your pocket.
I’m looking for more on Op:Icestorm – damn you Corvus Beli for taking all my moneys… thanks Justin for the warning. Wish I was going to Gen CON but I feel those folks at Infinity have a good grip on the bank account already.
Thanks for the iguanas 😉
Also, Justin, where did you get that t-shirt? I need one
Wolsung! Everybody back it!
I am in love with where infinity is headed. I can’t wait to buy more of their new models!
Cannot wait for BoW’s coverage of Op: Icestorm. Even got me a Backstage pass not to miss any Infinity content. Keep up the good work, mates!
Iguana squad is one of the best miniatures ever!
Dang! Iguana Squadron. Can’t… handle… that much…. AWESOME!!!
Well…this was what you could call a win-win situation. Watching BoW made me back Wolsung….and the pledge got me to finally sign up as backstager…no longer thinking about it. So here you have it…all your fault 😉
That’s exactly what happened to me. So that BoW video battle report cost me $715! Unless of course I get it paid for by BoW of course…
