The sinister forces of the Dark Eldar grow steadily in number…
February 16, 2011 by warzan
Games Workshop have just announced the availability of the following cool additions to the Dark Eldar Range:
Check Them Out!
So what do you guys make of these? I love that Clawed Fiend! (But I'm just a sucker for monsters!)
So a question for the DE players among us... what's been your general reception to the relaunch? As a player who enjoys Nid's we seem to have been pretty well looked after with a sharp succession of releases, but now the dust has settled are you happy? ... or in deliriously drug induced ECSTASY!!?!??!??!?

They are super nice models.
Clawed fiend is a great sculpt and nicely painted to show that, but I really like the flock…
The khymera awesome, and the clawed fiend is perfect ! Three sets of eyes and nipples ? I’m sold.
I totally agree on the monsters, but I don’t like the succubus and beastmaster. I think the succubus is just too much like the others. The beastmaster just looks….I dunno…off. I can’t really put my finger on it, but I don’t like it.
Those khymera are awesome, I’m only slightly underwhelmed by the razorwings who just look like angry crows
@ keebrev ~ It could be the helm he’s wearing. Looks like a helm with six eyes to me. According to the book, these beastmasters are supposed to be a type of shaman…
Love the Fiend and the Khymera! I’m going to field as many as I’m allowed =D
Love the Succubus model too, but I’m giving her hydra blades =D
Love the beastmaster model too, but I think it needs a bit more detail. I’m going to add fur pelts, and maybe some flayed skin >=D
The succubus just looks like another wytch, and to be honest the weapons she’s armed with are maybe a bit counter productive, either could be a close combat weapon but you’re most likely only going to have one upgrade weapon- either an agoniser/corrosive wip or venom blade/power weapon, you can have one of each but you lose an attack and you can only use one per turn, and then you have to ask why you didn’t keep the pistol. There’s probably parts on the wytch frame for for any of the more effective combinations if you wanted to do a conversion but then, why not just start from a wytch and save yourself the 8 quid?
The Beast master’s wip agian could be a close combat weapon or agoniser but if you have more than one you’ll need to differentiate them somehow since only one can have an agoniser, and they’ll all look alike whatever you do, so the temptation would be to convert with hellion parts which would lead me to thinking “hey I can have five beast masters and hellions come in boxes of five…”
The beasts are awesome, but one pose of clawed fiend could be a problem since you’re probably gonna want more than one, and he doesn’t really look captive, but I guess the DE could have gone to the Donorian sector(were the 3rd ed rulebook says the fiends are form) and captured a breeding pair to “domesticate” the pups(or hatchlings, or cubs or whatever). I’d probably look on ebay for an old ambull model to go along side the clawed fiend and just use the same rules to get a bit of variety into the unit.
Awesome!!
Those beasts dont even look like gw models. they look superb but stray so far from the normal gw style.
The Dark Eldar Razorwing Flock
If they take a wound does that mean that 1 base is removed ( 3 birds ) or 1 bird from the base?
The Succubus is a great looking sculpt but why have they put this close combat killer in such a boring static pose? I appreciate its important not to overshadow similar miniatures in the range, such as Lelith Hesparax, but there is aboslutely no dynamism or movement at all in this model. As a commander of the wych cults and a commander model the fluff says ‘folllows her wych maidens as they seek out suitable opponents for her to kill’ this is another wasted opportunity and another example of GW playing it ‘safe and boring’.
As for the other sculpts, i like the beasts alot except the razorwing flocks. Again could have done something much more interesting here. As for the Beastmaster, its average at best and a bit too Hellraiser ‘Cenobite’ in style. I like the skyboard variant tho.
Overall, a disappointing continuation of a range that started out with alot of promise. I hope they give greater consideration when they release the Wracks, Grotesques and Homunculus models. My next army is DE and themed on a Homunculus ‘menagerie’ so i desperately want these sculpts to be special. Urien was great so fingers crossed….
just a shame they’re all metal =/
So basically a unit with 5 beastmasters, 1 fiend, 4 flocks and 10 khymerae is going to cost me what? 175 pounds? O.K. this is great joke, I can have 20 strong unit taking one slot and 280pts for 175.
I love you GW
Is there any point in complaining about GW prices in every post about a GW release – I doubt that there’s a single person in the world that’s involved in gaming that doesn’t know about GW prices being high …..
Is there any point in keeping silent when you’re being f…ed with ?
Don’t like it don’t buy them – no ones twisting your arms
What about “i like it (or some of it), but I can’t or won’t buy it because it’s too damn expensive for what it is” ?
You don’t always get what you pay for.
I’m with you, mate. Very beautiful models, but very over priced. It’s a shame, I think GW might be shooting themselves in the foot on this one.
You cant, check page 90 of the codex. Theres a limit on the beasts
I take that back – your right!
Thought that was per beastmaster? I read it as 1 clawedfiend per beastmaster therfore 5 beastmasters in a squad = 5 Clawedfiends
It would be difficult for them to make a plastic kit for this unit but it would have been better. Although they are metal I think every one of those models look good.
Like the clawed fiend one of the most original looking monsters i’ve seen in the past few years from GW don’t play DE myself but i know my friends who do will be happy about these.
I would agree with you for the most part…but I cant help but giggle at the fact that the Clawed Fiend reminds me of the cat-like monster from the arena scene in Star Wars Episode II. somehow crossbred with an ape.
Nice models. I’m sure people will have a blast with them. What I find most hilarious is all the propaganda on the GW site that makes all this look like an instant win button.
“the new Beastmaster and his monsters are truly deadly. Each unit destroyed at least double its points cost in every fight, which shows how devastating they can be if your opponents choose to ignore them (foolish, foolish people).”….hmmm….does this sound right…maybe…if you are playing against a total idiot.
Advice for non DE players…again from the GW site.
“If you don’t collect Dark Eldar then you’re going to need a unit that’s so good in combat they won’t want to charge you. Alternatively you could find a unit that fires so many bullets there’s nothing left of those evil creatures by the time the smoke clears.”
So basically, 9 lists out of 10 can counter these guys without any trouble?
Three cheers for the GW instant win team!
Wow. Those models are excellent. Truly what i envisioned they could be. I was about ready to actually start that dark eldar army i wanted………….. until they completly priced me out of it. Those prices are absurdly high. Jade has it right on this one.
gg GW. gg.
Whats with those over happy ‘zomgyouneedztobuydis’ comments from their staff at the bottom of the models in the store. :O.
They look great. Might have to buy a few even if I don’t use them
It’s nice to see that GW is filling in the gaps in the new Dark Eldar codex, I personally thought because of the other releases we wouldn’t see new DE till June, but I luckily was wrong x)
The Succubus does look indeed too much like the other wyches though :\ and these two are some of my least favourite units from the codex, so I would rather have seen something else first… but still awesome to see new DE models out x)
Im glad GW can take time to fill out the DE models but continue to neglect that the ‘nids who are missing 1/3 of their models still…
(rant ended for now…)
But the models look great and if I ever start building another army I may go towards the DE just because of the way their models look
I was really hoping vect would be released next. But the next release should be awesome. I hadn’t really thought about using beast masters until now. But they seem to be quite nasty.
Not enamoured by these and compared to the first wave am a tad disappointed.
The Succubus looks fine and I love the concept of the Beastmaster on the Helion with his flock of avians, but not so much the sculpts. The beasts are also rather tame imho (pun not intended)
They just lack the finesse and quality of some of the recent GW releases.
I thought they really raised the bar last year with the DE and this seems like a bit of a step backwards.
Here’s a new idea for a Beasts of War video, they should list all the other models out there that could be used as “count as” models instead of these borderline expensive piles of poop.
Sure they look good (kinda) but when a unit costs more that a squad of Sisters of Battle things have gone horribly wrong somewhere.
So Warren, Darrell and the rest, make a video about models from other miniature makers that people can use instead. I feel sorry for people who play in GW shops because they will be forced to buy these just to be able to play, if they are even allowed to play and not thrown out because they need to boards for demo games when potential customers are abound.
I say, buy the ones you like and then buy a packet of InstantMold from coolminiornot.
Im glad they came out with more raven models. I have a raven guard. any Ideas ?
well, there’s honestly not much use for them. Although I plan on getting a set just to make a couple Psyber Ravens as decorative pieces to include in my Librarius Honour Guard. Other than that, maybe try to mount them on vehicles, bend the wings, I can’t think of any other exceptionally good uses.
i like the look but I am a little disappointed, i was hoping the next dark eldar miniture would be somthing along the lines of a new heavy support. i have plans for my dark eldar army but i don’t think these will be included, but then again they might grow on me
Im so damn annoyed that they brought out one of the weakest units.
I tried them out in a game and they died instantly and did nothing. Just got blasted by a valkyrie and a few supporting shots and that whas them running off the board edge because the beast master died due to wound allocation. I not see however that you can take 1-5 beast masters per squad. Didnt read that properly before but yes, it would be too expensive.
WHERES MY TALOS?! WHERES MY VENOM?! WHERE ARE MY SCOURGES?! AND WHERE ARE MY BOMBERS?!!!!! lol
There is still a huge amount of models that they will (hopefully) be releasing. I was going through the book the yesterday. Not only more special characters but just units in general. This release is really only two units. There is still all the all the creatures that can accompany the Archon, the fighter, bomber, wracks, grotesques, haemonculi, scourges, talos, cronos and venoms. I hope the next release is a little more expansive and plastic.
I love the models and I think GW did a great job with them but there is one problem…i dont know how anyone hasn’t stated this yet but doesn’t the clawed fiend look eerily like the disney character Stitch? I have to imagine that whatever artist painted this model had to have been giggling as he pulled out the blue paint pot….then again maybe it’s just me.
“doesn’t the clawed fiend look eerily like the disney character Stitch?”
holy crap your right!
i think one of the main problems i have with these guys is that they don’t look very dark eldar-ish
I’ve decided to use the Khymera as Fiends of Slaanesh in my Chaos Daemons army because the stock models are so crap. I mean, the stats fit a creature formed of NIGHTMARES for crying out loud (hit and run, beast, rending, etc). Plus, I like the idea of something other than god specific daemons coming out of warp rifts.
the flock could be a decent “chooser of the slain” for a wolf priest… but for the price i will buy a reaver mini since its a marker and doesnt have to be in gw’s range.
The razor wings will make great choosers of the slain for my Rune Priest.
Does anyone else think that that kabalites are under priced, when guardians are the same except they have one less WS, BS and I?
