They're new, but we've been burned by random Psychic powers before. We all know Darrell's aversion to anything random, so what words of wisdom will he have to help your aspiring sorcerers?

On your powers to give an example of Weapon Virus I played against Chaos just two days ago and they didn’t take it. Why’s it a good example then? Well they took the one you’ve been warning against, Psychic Shriek, and straight to Nurgle Rot rather than rolling. They must have cast Psychic Shriek at least 3 times, maybe even 4, and not once did it do a thing. Like you say too many hoops to jump through and I got lucky and won two Deny the Witch rolls.
Afterwards I pointed out to my opponent that if they’d got Weapon Virus, I was chasing them with a unit of 20 Shoota Boyz (2 upgraded to Big Shoota) with my Boss attached. That’s 44 dice for me to potentially get 1’s on. I work it out on average I’d be looking at 6 unsaved wounds but obviously could be a lot more with a bad roll. Also it’d be a massive disincentive to shooting. It’s on his turn then mine. If he charges me with a unit and I overwatch, chances are I’m taking out a good chunk of my guys myself with that on.
Like you say though, corner case but remember you roll at the start of the game when you know what you’re opponent has brought to the table. If you get it and it doesn’t suit, you just swap it out for Primaris.
Slaaneshy Ringtong 😛
I agree. Chaos psi-powers are not for competitive play.
However, I do not agree with your analysis of tzeentch powers completely. Gift of mutation is bad, but as a blessing it is still better than bolt of corruption.
The Tzeench-Sorcerer in a squad of Thousand Sons is a bit less than 60 points. If you calculate 15 points for the force weapon and 25 points for the sorcerer himself, you pay a bit less than 20 points for a few extra rolls on the boon table. A Dark Apostle could even re-roll them. A mark of tzeentch is allright for the apostle because of his mandatory sigil of corruption. This is still not a competitive combination, but if you like Tzeentch-themed armies it might be good enough for casual games.
If you roll for bolt of corruption, it is 20 points for an unreliable meltagun without armor bane, which is slightly worse.
Rum, Sodmy and the Lash – that is what emiers are buid on 😉
Weapon Virus came in handy for me the first time i used it. i unleashed it onto some deathmarks and luckily his harbinger of despair blew himself up instead of frying typhus and his squad of plague marines. I know it just came down to luck but if it wasn’t for that power my squad would have died, instead they just set there and laughed at those daft self-destructing machines 🙂
use weapon virus on vehicles or units you are about to assault. their overwatch hits on 6s but 1s can kill them. also with vehicles it cant hurt for say a leman russ with a battlecannon and 3x heavy bolters to potentially sit out a turn or gets hot.
