Shooting Your Own Guys in the Back
January 27, 2011 by dignity
Andy and Vishal have a look at shooting your own units on the battlefield to give you a better chance to hit your opponent.
But what do you guys think, is this a sneaky bit of cheese or just a good plan waiting to be used?

Nice video… But most of the time, Stryker can target enemy units just fine with his power, can’t he ?
Well… you get a +2 bonus to attack rolls because you are attacking the back arc. Making this the equivalent of a (poor) boost, without spending a FOCUS… there’s a +2 to the damage roll… but you need to factor that in before committing to this tactic.
There’s another tips video due out on this subject where you target your allies, because they are immune to the damage you cause, then the attack jumps to the enemy models and you start boosting.
This is the general idea. There will be more tips about where you can apply the tactic more specifically.

Thanks !
By the way…

Need !
Hmmm. Very nice video guys! to be honest i would have never thought to do that. I’ll definitely try to start thinking outside the box a little more now.
Good for an example, stupid for a in game move.
Would rather EQ the PoM heavy instead.
Of course if your Earthquake is going to hit your own model anyway, there’s no reason why you wouldn’t target your own model for the +2 on the attack roll and save a FOCUS that you may have spent boosting the attack roll.

I use FOC to boost my rolls if I need to hit 8+. Otherwise you are definitely waisting FOC.
Ironclad has DEF 12, so Stryker hits him on a 4+ on 2d6 when hitting the backarc. The PoM heavy has a DEF 10 as well. Do you really boost 4+ rolls?!
What you do is:
1. EQ Kreoss and heavy. (3 FOC)
2. Charge with Ironclad (1 FOC)
3. Beat the crap out of the PoM heavy.
4. Shoot with the Charger twice (2 FOC, one fully boosted) to soften up Kreoss.
Voila, 6 FOC full of win.
Fab tactic using Electro leap stuff (chain lightning, storm towers etc). Even better when your own target is immune to the effect!
That´s really the better example of the shooting-your-own-guy-tactic. Espcecially with Cygnar.
I could imagine using Battle Mages to nudge own jacks could also be a good tactic, although a little risky.
It’s fun with Vayl, anything she hits with her glassy orb becomes and arc node and its POW is low enough that it won’t scratch any of the Legion heavies. Shoot a Carnivean in the rear and channel through it.
At a pinch you can run something dirt cheap up near the enemy and shoot at it with Magic Bullet, bounce the shot to your enemy. It’s one way to get around annoying solos like Eiryss.
“to give you the bit more of a chance to hit your opponent”
^^^^^^^^^^ Er what?…..
By hitting your own model with an attack that has an AoE or will bounce to your opponents models. You increase your chance to hit them by gaining a +2 bonus for targeting the back arc of a model… just happens to be your own model is all! 😀

Shooting your own guys is a great (although sometimes costly) tactic. The only issue with this video, being restricted to start boxes you are not going to have all that many scenarios where it will provide a big payoff. This is no fault of the BoW crew, simply a consequence of keeping things simple to start with.
The key I guess is really KNOWING that you can do this. From there you will judge yourself if it the cost is worth the payout.
Orboros players have one of the best models in the game for this exact tactic. SHIFTING STONES. They are blessed with all the qualities that a good ‘shot node’ needs:
Low DEF
High ARM
Damage boxes
The ability to TELEPORT into position
Can never be knocked down or engaged in combat
The last two are fairly important. Being immune to knockdown means you can always count on your Stone being able to move into position. The fact that Shifting Stones are NEVER engaged in combat means you will never suffer the +4DEF bonus for using a ranged attack into melee.
Kreuger can dish out a LOT of near auto hitting Chain Lightning pain this way. At DEF5 you never need to boost to hit a Shifting Stone. In nearly every case the only roll that will miss is snake eyes. Chain Lightning has POW10, so on an average roll (7 on 2D6) it will not even hurt the ARM18 Shifting Stone.
The other way I use them is what I call a ‘critical node’. Spells or effects that require a critical hit can be improved with Shifting Stones. Mind you the chance of rolling a double is still the same…..you can only improve that by adding more dice to the attack roll. But what the Shifting Stone does do, is open up MORE double rolls that count. Again, this comes down to it’s DEF5 which means that any double is a critical hit. Just remember that double 1 will still miss, unless your attack roll had 3 or more dice and one of the rolled dice was 2 or more.
I use this with Baldur a lot. His only attack spell is Earth Spikes, and while POW13 and AOE3 is nice, the critical knockdown is the part that can really allow you to deliver pain. I will teleport a a Shifting Stone into base contact with a high DEF target (most often Denegra) and then target the stone with Earth Spikes. Again, you are counting on a critical hit, but at least now double 2 will count…knocking Denegra down and making it a LOT easier for my Warpwolf to shred her in a single turn.
I agree with Vishal this is like laser guidance. I have used this a total of 5 times with both Khador and Cygnar. It works extremely well if you have something like Man-O-Wars that might survive the assault.
