Win 4Ground’s New Sci Fi Modular Terrain
June 22, 2018 by dignity
Today we've got Cad and Ben in from 4Ground to talk about their new awesomely designed modular terrain for your Sci Fi games, these pieces are perfect for games of Star Wars, Necromunda and Dark Age.
Shaping the walls with magnetic fixtures allows you to be a little more aggressive on the tabletop too, these things are tough as nails and will take quite a lot of force to move on your board. Did we mention, you could win your own set of Modular Sci Fi terrain yourself?
Comment with your best idea to play a movie franchise on this terrain and your favourite quote from that franchise.
What would you play on this terrain?

Oo, I want.
Its so smart and oh so pretty…
I would use this terrain to play Aliens. Of course, playing as the Marines. As for the quote, anything said by Bill Paxton, but my favorite will always be,
“That’s it, man! Game over, man! Game over!”
oh wow,4 ground have once again done very nicely here. I really like those walls, they’re very indistrial looking rather than grimdark and I love that. Very impressive indeed. I also love the fact the container has a removable roof and the crates work really well along side it all.
Obviously Star Wars using any ruleset from Imperial Assault to Legion to homebrew. “This is not going to go how you think.”
But that’s the obvious choice.
Another choice would be hot man vs machine action in Terminator probably using Infinity rules since they’re so brutal. “Come with me if you want olive.” I’m 98% sure that’s what he said.
Still not what we’d prefer. We’d actually go with boarding actions in the Mass Effect universe using a homebrew ruleset that accounts for amount of fire for suppression and such … or just use Infinity again. “I’m Commander Shepard and this is my favorite store on the Citadel.” Not my favorite quote, but it gets repeated enough 🙂
Just found another ruleset that would work great for this terrain: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/245175/CQB-Futuristic-Skirmish-Miniatures-Rules
Not really a film franchaise per say (only has two films the second of which was a reboot), but it has a long running comic book franchaise, so my answer would be Judge Dredd for what to play on it and quote has got to be “I am the Law!”
They look even better in the flesh, need to get round to lighting them up….
Fantastic! Will have to get a set of this myself! That’s very, very nice!
The way that terrain slides around and is configurable, I’d have to go with “Maze Runner”. Just add a nasty gribbly thingy (as a nemesis), and a runner for each player. Then have the terrain sliding around on a dice roll as the players try to escape (possibly cutting off the gribbly from chasing YOU and instead chasing another player) 🙂
almost forgot the quote……
“Great we’re bloody inspired”
― James Dashner, The Maze Runner
heh
Infinity, Killteams, necromunda, all the rpg’s my group plays. Seems like that stuff would get a lot of use.
Escape From New York….”They sent in their best man, and when we roll across the 59th Street bridge tomorrow, on our way to freedom, we’re going to have their best man leading the way – from the neck up! On the hood of my car!”
Given that the terrain works for current settings I would pick James Bond using the 7TV rules and I always love Connery films. My quote is ” No, Mr. Bond I expect you to die.” from Goldfinger.
Great looking terrain. Would work well with a Firefly game.
Jayne – “Ten percent of nothin’ is … let me do the math here … nothin’ into nothin’ … carry the nothin’ … “
Be great for Firefly RPG “Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal”
Looks great… the only issue, I have found, is that I magnetized some of my Infinity models and whenever I use them on some of the magnetized terrains out there, they click into place over the terrain… Lol… That said, this can be super GREAT for any REMs with Climbing Plus =p… Hang right off the wall and draw LOS to the enemy that thought it was safe =p
Ha! The Mercs skirmish rules has a snap-to-cover mechanic. Could happen automatically with this terrain.
What would I play on this terrain? What wouldn’t I! Dredd (“Perps were uncooperative”), Aliens (“She doesn’t have bad dreams because she’s just a piece of plastic”), Space Hulk (“A Quote from the film script I keep sending to Warner Bros and keep getting back”), Star Wars (“What I told you is true, from a certain point of view”)…
But really, someone should make a Red Dwarf game, and I’d play that on it. “Dwayne Dibley?”
Petition 7TV, I’m sure they’d manage. 😉
chronicles of riddick would be great on this terrain
Riddick: You remember that favorite game of yours?
Keira: Who’s The Better Killer?
Riddick: Let’s play.
would be amazing
TMNT, ‘That was my best shirt,’ Jerico – Blod Royal
Hmm.. thinking outside the box a bit… but I could set these up as a Trench run in Star Wars X-Wing. Just need to add some dishes and canons lol. So for Star Wars quote I’ll do : Yoda – “Do. Or do not. There is no try.”
Love the 4 ground stuff … just wish there was better distribution, or some for here in Canada. 😀
So many possibilities…. Blade Runner, James Bond, Aliens….
I’ll settle for Terminator and “I’ll be back!”
Ok I am in for this one – Gaslands – in an industrial setting with modified rules for time travel (e.g. short jumps ahead in time for advantages) .. and the quote – The way I see it, if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style? Dr. Emmett Brown (Back to the Future)
Perfect for Cat Women from the Moon or Project Moonbase
“I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain …”
tl;dr I want someone to make a Blade Runner game
or the prequel that wasn’t (but really was) Soldier.
“But one soldier, against seventeen. What are you going to do?”
Todd: “I’m going to kill them all, Sir.” another Kurt classic
Great looking terrain and usefull for lots of games out there! Thanks for the vid and awesome prize!
I first thought of Aliens at the start of the video when looking at it (still slowly assembling my KS stuff and basing them…). The classic quote from Ripley: “Get away from her you b****!” And a lot of what Hudson says could be said here too 😉
Comment, comment, comment- I never win- comment, comment, comment
Ha! You’re a winner to me sir!…..or madam…..it’s hard to tell these days?
Gotta be Star Wars Legions.
“Why, you stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking nerf herder!”
The 5th Element, best sci fi blockbuster ever made, Must be green, supergreen !!
That will be great for any ship port or station from about today to infinity and beyond.
This is great. Easy and fast to assemble and then easy and fast to disassemble and store. I’d use it for SW legions, Starfinder rpg, Relic knights and probably plenty more I’m not thinking of right now.
But ultimately i’d love to use this while playing Firefly. Granted it’s not a miniatures game that exist right now and it’s mostly a tv show, but there was a film. But I think my favourite quote is from the serie and it’s Wash talking about Jayne who received a gift from his mom:
“Man walks down the street in a hat like that, you know he’s not afraid of anything … “
I know if @warzan was here he’d be going for THX 1138 and the quote would be “Let us be thankful we have commerce. Buy more. Buy more now. Buy. And be happy.” 😀
I think people would be hard pressed to not want to play a Galaxy Quest game on it, I can see Alan Rickman and Tim “the toolman” Allen being chased by Simon Bisley drawn space orcs, ‘By Grabthar’s hammer, by the suns of Warvan, you shall be avenged!’
Space Hulk with some doors added to the set.
Great terrain set. With new Infinity campaign starting next week and taking place at military bases, I cannot imagine better candidate for the use of this terrain. Movie franchise? Alien vs Predator with rules and miniatures from Prodos games
I’m getting a really strong Dune vibe, from the films at least what with the future industrial feel – can imagine green billowing smoke over Geidi Prime, Baron Harkonnen and his maniacal laughter ‘I’m alive! I’m alive!’
Now that is very clever. Very functional and looks great. Wargaming lego for the 21st century.
I would play Cube (the motion picture) on that.
I second the idea of a Red Dwarf themed game, would be perfect for it. ‘Holly: He’s dead, Dave, everybody is dead, everybody is dead, Dave. Lister: Wait. Are you trying to tell me everybody’s dead?’
This looks incredibly versatile. I love 4Ground
Greetings! Lovely stuff as always, Aliens springs instantly to mind but I’m gonna go Predator! Or more importantly predator 2! The scene in the meat warehouse…but my favourite quote has to be from the first movie….and it’s not “get to the chopper” or any jokes regarding the size of someone’s ‘cat’….ahem, ….wait for it……it’s Jesse Ventura with the classic line “chewing this will make you a god damn sexual Tyrannosaur”……I’ll get my coat?
Well, I don’t have a Bladerunner game — but using Infinity models and this terrain would make a fun Mock/Simulation mission. With the weathering talked about, the set would make for great streets and corridors to go along with the concrete buildings and feel of the two movies. Maybe an Aleph andriod uprising verse gritty Tunguska nomad cyber police for the forces.
The best Bladerunner book of course would be ‘Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?’
I think that be the best Necromunda undergone terrain I have seen. I might need to get this.
I would love this terrain for Star Wars legion and Infinity or even 40k.
I would use for Star Wars , quoting Darth Sideous “Wipe them out, all of them.”
Blade Runner. Hunt the replicants as the theme. I leave you with Roy’s last words after all a replicants any less human? “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.”
Aliens obviously! Game Over Man! Game Over!(Pour one out for Bill)
Give me this, some tyranids and cadians and I can play Aliens. “They mostly come at night… mostly….”
Limited Insertion Infinity caledonians, lead by William Wallace. I’ve heard he’s 7 feet tall. “Yes, i’ve heard, kills men by the hundreds, and if he were here, he’d consume the English with fire-balls from his eyes, and bolt of lightning from his arse.”
It would have to be Terminator, I think.
Oh very nice
“Smoke me a Kipper, I’ll be back for Breakfast!” A Red Dwarf skirmish would be ace. Very nice scenery.
I bought Shadow war when it came out because I was once a necromunda fan. I’ve still played neither game.
Looks awesome I’m thinking some green stuff gribbly bits and mutations added to some sections would be perfect to show some chaos mutated ship sections from the Horus Heresy or some nasty looking alien secretions for a game of AvP
Got to be the Alien Franchise as i have my genestealer cult gang
“I’m ready, man, check it out. I am the *ultimate* badass! State of the badass art! You do not wanna fuck with me. Check it out! Hey Ripley, don’t worry. Me and my squad of ultimate badasses will protect you! Check it out! Independently targeting particle beam phalanx. Vwap! Fry half a city with this puppy. We got tactical smart missiles, phased plasma pulse rifles, RPGs, we got sonic electronic ball breakers! We got nukes, we got knives, sharp sticks…”
I would love to use them for a “Death Race” game like Gaslands.
Jensen Ames: So what are you in for?
Case: They say I killed a cop.
Jensen Ames: Did you do it?
Case: Yeah.
Jensen Ames: Bad cop?
Case: Good cop… lousy husband.
A game base on the film Cube.
Leaven: what is out there?
Worth: Boundless human stupidity.
Leaven: I can live with that.
I’d Like to see Bladerunner.
‘I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I’ve watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in the rain. Time to die.”
You could use some of the terrain as giant camouflaged cubes from Terrahawks
There is something about the contrast introduced via those yellow, red and white inserts that screams Red Dwarf to me (and frankly, I’m surprised that somebody like Crooked Dice hasn’t produced a suitable miniatures range for it). So I would probably use them for a Red Dwarf themed game using perhaps the Rogue Stars rules.
..and obviously the best Red Dwarf quote is “An excellent plan, with just two drawbacks: One, we don’t have a power source for lasers; and Two, we don’t have any lasers.”
This would make an amzing Ready Player One style container city for skirmish games. The film also has one of my favourite quotes of all time…
“Going outside is highly overrated”
Would like to see it used on a matrix game.
Morpheus Quote: This is your last chance. After this, there is no turning back. You take the blue pill – the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill – you stay in Wonderland and I show you how deep the rabbit-hole goes.
Very nice terrain. With some blue inserts, and possibly clear plastic sheet to represent flooded areas, I would play The Abyss, one of my favourite underwater films, in the game you could have the marines v the rig crew, hunting down the bombs, with the aliens interfering ala Walking Dead.
The quote:
Bud: Linds, I want you to stay away from that guy. I mean it.
Hippy: The guy is gone. Did you see his hands?
Lindsey: What? He’s got the shakes?
Bud: Look, he’s operating on his own. He’s cut off from his chain of command, he’s showing signs of pressure-induced psychosis and he’s got a nuclear weapon. So as a personal favor to me, will you try to put your tongue in neutral for a while?
I’d play SW Legion, and I hopy my enemy would say “I have a bad feeling about this”
Could use this terrain for any sci fy game. Start with Necromunda.
I would get a Star Trek game going with this set. So many planets had this same feel. My favorite Picard quote is one that I feel applies to my slowly growing hobby skills and it is “things are only impossible until they are not.”
Probably not the first person to suggest Aliens as a film/franchise, but my favorite quote would be, “I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.”
4grounds stuff always looks fantastic well done guys.
Film franchise that I would kove to run on this is “The Raid”, play as a small team of highly skilled cops vs gang of criminals
Quote from Mad Dog – Pulling the trigger is like ordering takeout…this is what its all about. (Procedds to martial arts someone to death)
Love this terrain, it looks absolutely fabulous and I love that they have mentioned specifically using it for Infinity since I have been looking for terrain for the game which is premade.
Lots of narrow corridors and confinded spaces and a scifi feel? Aliens comes to mind. Althought I wouldn’t advise fighting them in there. I’d…”Nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure”.
4ground guys seem to be very nice chaps!
This is my future AvP table, I f I would have miniatures I would play star ship troopers on it.
So much that this could be used for.
Batman would work as well on this – so “I’m Batman!” or “Have you ever danced with the devil by the pale moonlight?”
Oh have to be aliens quotes marines we are leaving
Wow would be awesome for space hulk
Serenity (Firefly) would be fun to make a movie with this. A lot of potential places they were sadly not explored further. Honestly think it would be perfect.
Favorite quote would have to be from the ol’ faithful pilot.
“I’m a leaf on the wind… Watch how I soar…” – Wash
I want to play Aliens on this board ” Mostly.”
4Ground always makes nice looking stuff.
Sure why not.
Ghost in the Shell
Major Motoko Kusanagi: “If a technological feat is possible, man will do it. Almost as if it’s wired into the core of our being.”
Movie: Bladerunner
Quote: “I’ve seen things you people wouldn’t believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain. Time to die.” -Roy Batty
Judge Dread would be awesome!!!! for hilarious Stalones “I am the Law!!”, but said as if your mouth is full of marshmallows
Tough one…make a Judge Dredd scenario with Necromunda minis.
Dredd: “Negotiation’s over. Sentence is death”
Very nice, looks great ?
OK, here goes, using the labyrinthine corridors created by 4ground’s awesome terrain, I’d create a game based on the Terry Gilliam film “Brazil”. One player would play as Harry Tuttle, doing their best to traverse the board heroically fixing broken air conditioning while the other player acts as the bureaucratic Central Services, attempting to catch the maverick Tuttle.
It would use a variant of the 7TV rules with some added stealth. Also, the Countdown deck could be adapted to add moments and themes from the film. A bombing that causes damage and creates holes in the wall (easily replicated due to the awesome magnetised terrain) or some of the Central Services henchmen get diverted due to a typo on their paperwork.
As for a quote, it’s got to be this:
Mrs. Ida Lowry: Sam! Can’t you do something about these terrorists?
Sam Lowry: It’s my lunch hour. Besides, it’s not my department.
With all the crates how about Aliens, Ripley, “Get away from her, you bitch”, but then again, Vasquez “YOU were always an asshole Gorman”, or maybe, Hudson “Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?”, Vasquez, “No. Have you?” Guess I’m off to watch Aliens then 🙂
That would really scratch the itch of my “Space Hulk Killteam” fantasies.
Also, I’d probably play a lot of Infinity on such terrain.
Great to se 4ground moving in this direction.
This would work for a 7TV-type, James Bond game.
Star Wars, I can see that this could be used for Legion, Imperial Assualt (both versions of the game) and any of the RPG’s out there.
Boring converstation anyway.
Serenity:
The Operative: Do you know what your sin is, Mal?
Mal: Oh hell, I’m a fan of all seven. But right now, I’m gonna have to go with wrath.
I’m thinking The Expanse not a movie franchise (but a sci fi series)
“I keep warning you. Doors and corners, kid. That’s where they get you. Humans are too f#$%ing stupid to listen.”
That would be some nice terrain for infinity too!
You said franchise so aliens came to mind first, but that’s probably mentioned a few times already!
I’ll go with starship troopers as it seems to fit thematically and Rico when he says “come on you apes, you wanna live forever”
I’d be leaning toward playing Infinity, Necromunda or even Deadzone using this terrain.
Seeing as I mostly play Alien factions I’d have to pick one of my favourite SciFi quotes from Aliens
“We’d better get back, ’cause it’ll be dark soon, and they mostly come at night….. mostly”
4ground do some great terrain.
I always think its a bit pricey, but then i’ve bought a bunch anyhows as i CBA painting terrain anymore!
It reminds me a lot of the 40k Zone Mortalis terrain. So going for some indoor 40k missions would be the obvious choice.
But I would use a lot of weathering on these. Like rust, dents and burn marks (which always works great with the marks already on laser cut mdf). Then I would built a run down container shipyard and play some kind of Firefly game. Maybe with some tuned down Infinity rules.
Magnetic modular terrain is a great idea!
I would play Terminator on terrain like this. In the apocalyptic future, with John Connor and his friend T-800. “And if someone gets upset you say, “chill out”!”
Firefly crew on a heist in a warehouse. “I can kill you with my brain”
Very interested to see how this turns out and the price point as I’m looking to get a Zone Mortalis board sometime this year still. This has the advantage of being able to pack it away, and the pre-painted side means its less bother than some of the other wall sets that have come out.
Okay, movie franchise… can we do “series franchise”? I’d say you could play out some awesome Altered Carbon scenes on that terrain!
Star Wars. Do. Or do not. There is no try. -Yoda
I was thinking about Starship Troopers. I would keep the style kinda clean and not weather it too dark to keep it in style with the movie. The terrain would be great as newly erected bases and barricades against the bugs. As quote I like “Shoot a nuke down a bug hole, you got a lot of dead bugs.”
Looks great for Judge Dredd Miniature game.
“Citizens of Peach Trees. This is the law. Disperse immediately, or we will use lethal force to clear the area. You have been warned. You now have 20 seconds to comply.”
-Judge Dredd
I like there new stuff so many game I could use it in, I would use this to play 5th element don’t know a rule set but my quote “You’re a monster, Zorg. I know.”
Having recently gotten into Infinity, I would definitely play some games of Infinity.
It would have to be Aliens as the movie setting and the quote, “Nuke it from orbit. Its the only way to be sure.” These look amazing as always 4ground crew.
Police squad series to play on this. 7tv rules, New York back alleys, crates to drive through, crates to hide behind, be a good gritty cops and robbers feel to it.
I think Star Wars would be great to play on it.
“Aren’t you a little short for a stormtrooper?” — Leia
Sector: Segmentum Obscurus
World: Fenris

I’d love to see this used for a Logan’s Run scenario using the Osprey rules for Her Majesty, or fist full of kung fu.
Aliens would be awesome, favourite quote:
I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
My cousin commonly uses this quote upon discovery of a spider in the house.
aliens would be the basis with the squad moving through a warehouse like area or may be dockside. Then the surprise attack of the creatures and have Vasquez give the shout out – Let’s Rock….
I’m thinking this might edge me away from going down the Zone Mortalis route so i’ll end up playing Necromunda, Horus Heresy, Warhammer 40’000 on it.
I’d love to get a rough idea on a release date and pricing 🙂
From a movie kind of franchise could see a Firefly / Serenity skirmish one set on it very well.
“When you can’t run, you crawl. And when you can’t crawl, when you can’t do that…
…you find someone to carry you.”
It would be great terrain for Starship Troopers as a base on a planet. “Would you like to know more?”
incredible terrain!! these guys just are the best designers on the industry…. the movie franchise that is fit for this terrain in my opinion got to be: Alien… just hearing Ripley on the armor suit saying: GET AWAY FROM HER YOU B*TCH!!! …just sweet!!
