Khador Widowmakers | What’s In The Box
October 25, 2010 by dignity
Widowmakers... Khador's fearsome and elusive sniper unit... Andy opens a box of these long-ranged killers and gives us some more great tips and tactics for using them in Warmachine.

Just finishing basing my unit of these guys so this was good to see!
I think I might start warmachine, but no one in my club plays it 🙁
@kamkazekid
Not yet! I picked up a few and just started pestering everybody I play 40k with and got quite a bit of interest, so its not impossible to kickstart it yourself
I must say, hese videos are very nice !
I like the way the format presentation, first opening the box, then with the modeling and wash, and also the tactical advice and fluff around it all.
Also, PP minis are great sculpts… And Andy does an excellent job !
Thank you for covering more of warmachine and hordes.
I love Warmachine, but I have a small complaint. With only four models in the squad why only sculpt three? Were these models made before the rules? I realize they have to duplicate some models, but even my Cygnar Trenchers have four unique models. As I said it’s a small complaint, after all they don’t give you a lot to complain about. 😉
I imagine it cuts the production costs considerably, Only 3 moulds to worry about and one of them only needs a single spin to produce two minis.
After having seen miniatures produced, I can appreciate that this must make it a lot easier on the casters.
Widowmakers are the first unit I try to steer new Khador players towards, not only are they cheap both in the game and on the wallet, but they’re good with any warcaster, due to their self-reliance and easy tactics.
They also bring a Khador Battlebox up to 15pts from the get-go.
For me, they tick all the boxes for a good starting/first unit.

I would have to agree that when someone is starting out, Widowmakers are always near the top of the list.
There are a few others that also come to mind (Manhunters & Iron Fang Pikemen). The beauty of Widowmakers is that they do work quite well without spell support, although I like to keep a Manhunter close by to discourage enemy models from closing to melee range. Khador has very few directly beneficial spells for Widowmakers, although the one that always comes to mind is Shatter Storm from Epic Sorscha. There are others, but this spell allows them to slay entire units of light infantry with relative ease.
The things to remember with sniper is that at POW10, an average 2D6 dice roll of 7 will net you a total of 17 damage. That means if your target is ARM16 or higher….you may as well just plink a damage off it. Personally, even ARM15 which on averages would be dealt 2pts of damage, I normally just take the auto 1pt option. At ARM14, the odds are starting to tip well to your favour and I would always take the dice roll. This means that some light warjacks and warbeats can take considerable damage with a few decent dice rolls.
As for the models, the wash brings some of the details out. In all honesty they are not covered in fine details, but are beautifully proportioned models. The Kaptain in particular is shaped like a woman and not a man with boobs (a crime a LOT of other manufactures are guilty of). As for the coats, Khador do tend to have far more than any other faction…but it fits the fluff as the majority of Khador is covered in snow nearly the entire year.
I don’t play Warmachine yet but do have this box. The leader is great looking and stands out.
Like I said, get a starter box and you’ve got a minimum sized force… and a pretty good one at that! 😉
nice models, just one quick question; are there ”Beginner”-Boxes for Hordes as well? and if so are you going to review them in the near future?
Yeah we are. Currently the Hordes boxes are metal, we’re holding off on them until we see if PP are going to make plastic/resin versions.
If they relaunch the Warpack boxes, then we’ll do them, as it gives new players an easy “in” to the game.
Until then, we’ll try to get some of the new releases for Hordes unboxed and reviewed. Once we get some more of the Warmachine stuff filmed, we can move on to the more “basic” Hordes stuff.
PP have said that there are no plans (for the next 2-3 years) to do the Hordes warpacks in plastic. This is mainly due to the fact that in most cases the warbeasts are not simply the same model with a head and weapons swap.
Warmachine was rather simple, 4 Warcasters, 4 basic heavy Warjacks, 3 basic light Warjacks. The added bonus that each of the Warjacks shares 80% of it’s parts with a few other warjacks from it’s faction.
Hordes is a lot more complex. Again you have 4 Warlocks, but 3 heavy Warbeasts, 3 light Warbeasts and 1 lesser Warbeast. The real problem is that next to none of these really interchange with other beasts within the faction anything near the ease that the Warjacks can be done.
Starting with the Circle. The Argus model cannot be shared with anything else. Where a Deathripper is a Defiler, Nightwretch or ripjaw with nothing more than a head swap. The Warpwolf is a different matter, but even then, each of the 3 out now (Feral, Pureblood and Stalker) all have rather unique styling…not to mention that the Pureblood is a LOT bigger than the others.
Some of the models could be done. The Trollblood Axer and Impaler are basically the same thing with different weapons and slightly different armour. But you need to be able to create a single model that highlights bot the Axer as a melee beast and the Impaler as a ranged beast. The Dire Trolls would be easier.
Personally, I think you will have to do the sets as the currently stand Andy. Waiting for PP to release plastics for Hordes may see you never get around to doing them.
Well… it’s a moot point at the moment, as we don’t have any Warpack boxes. 😉
I’ll have a chat with the guys at PP and see what we can do.
In this interview a PP production manager confirmed Hordes plastic/resin Warpacks kits are planned at least, but no time frame sadly

I spoke to the blokes from PP earlier today… I should be able to have a look at the metal Hordes Warpacks soon.
However, there’s Dwarves and Elves in the pipeline first… once some of that’s done… a bit of Hordes is a definite possiblity.
However, as with the Blindwater Congregation, we’ll interrupt our coverage to bring you anything new we get our hands on! 🙂
Another great video Andy! Would you (or John) ever consider a “3 colours up” bit for the warmachine models you’ve been featuring? All these models have an amazing level of detail and I think it would be great for one of you guys to paint one up
I could do, but my level of painting is a bit rusty.
The invention of Army Painter Quickshade put paid to my “advanced painting” quite a while ago.
However, using the spray-detail-dip technique, you can get a whole battlebox done in an evening… that might make a decent video…
“We’ll see…” is about all I can say. 🙁
spray-detail-dip?
It’s a style of speed painting that works especially well on Warjacks as they only need a few colours.
Assemble the model, spray with the primary colour (say… red for Khador), paint in the metallics on the machinery and any accents you are looking for.
Then leave to dry for a bit and apply Army Painter Quickshade (or any sort of dip)… leave to dry for 4-5 hours and then matte varnish and base.
It’s pretty easy, I’ve done more than a few jacks this way and it gives you a very good “gaming standard” miniature.
Of course the better you are at painting, the better the final result. But it’s quick and easy for beginners too.
That sounds great for painting a large group of minatures! I remembered seeing a response to a previous post when you mentioned that you have psoriasis. I’m really sorry to hear it, I can only imagine that it can be quite painful. I’m told that dermatologists are perscribing pseudoceramides or a variant thereof for treatment. Ask your doctor about it, as it might be a good fit for you
