Unboxing Corvus Belli’s Infinity Operation: Icestorm!

It's the one you've been waiting for and indeed possibly one of the coolest products we've ever unboxed on Beasts of War. Warren sits down with Carlos of Corvus Belli to go through the contents of Infinity Operation: Icestorm; their new two player starter set!
The box contains Nomads and PanOceania troops and a whole lot of terrain to play on, so check out the video above and then let us know what you think of this one.

That’s certainly more terrain in the box (and what a small box it is!) than I was expecting. All that cover should help to ensure that the new players get the ‘right’ experience in their first few games 🙂

I have been holding off on getting into Infinity because, despite how awesome the minis look, there have been so many other things to focus on (DzC, Deadzone, Dreadball, Wild West Exodus, Malifaux 2E, FoW). Unfortunately (fortunately?) Corvus Belli have now eliminated all hesitation. That is an incredibly fantastic looking starter set that I would rank up there with the likes of DzC and Deadzone. Well played Corvus Belli! I look forward to joining the Infinity universe!

You could always fill you car with custom cut Battle Foam to justify you silly purchase. It would make an awesome carry case. Just try not to take it on a plane as hand luggage. 😛

It is a great starterbox! I’m very impressed and looking forward to the preorder on Monday! I play Infinity for three years now, but with all these amazing miniatures a starterbox is also interesting for veteran players!
I also hope that a lot of new players will find an excellent base with this box for their entrance into this impressive game!

Looks awesome! Models and terrain look very vibrant. Would say this is the second best starter on the market. Sorry but DZC is still number one because of the shear volume of stuff and fantastic detail on their plastics. Had it been a fabric mouse mat gaming mat, it would have pushed DZC into second place by introducing a higher quality item at the grass routes level and giving us more reason to lie to the Mrs about only getting one box, hehe.. As it is a strong 8.5/10!
I also think a few scatter terrainnitems couldmhave been included, I.e. signs, bins, civilians, phone booths, you get the idea. Hehe.

This looks amazing! I’ve been interested in Infinity but the host of factions, armies, miniatures, etc. has always made it hard for me to know where to start. This is a godsend! Where to I have to put my monies to get this?

Not convinced with the scenery and playmat, i was plasticraft buildings and a real playmat… i heard this will be a very economic two starter set and that might make sense but still if they at least put plasticraft buildings rather than this papercraft that doesn’t support the miniatures by itself then it will make a lot more sense.
I love the mission system and the miniatures as always are stunningly beautiful, i want to try Infinity… maybe if the price is right, but i would prefer to pay more for a better starter set. And why did you made it limited edition?! i really don’t get that unless you are gonna make another starter set with different missions and factions, if you do that them it will be amazing!… but if not it would be pretty strange…
I wonder if I can mug carlos before he leaves northern Ireland or even kidnap him with the ransom of 1 of each mini painted of the full range?

There isn’t a single bad mini in that whole starter. While never a fan of the rules I have always have nothing but absolute respect for the quality of the minis. They are some of the very best on the market…
…and some how they have done better.

Totally awesome. Absolutely perfect for beginners and demos!
It looks like the mat is 2’x4′, meaning two gives you a full 4×4 and close to (if not already at) enough terrain to cover it enough! That plus the free terrain downloads means you can easily get a starter table up and going with aught more than a printer and a short time. I wonder if the mats will line up logically.
I haven’t finished painting what I already have!!!!! a really nice looking set which blends economy with quality….

I think selling the terrain seperatly is a cracking idea , and designing the size to fit the miniboxes , inspired.

fantastic stuff! plus nearly all of the Nomads minis will work in the Haqqislam Qapu Khalqi sectorial, meaning I can justify to the wife me buying more toys!
I am suitably impressed, delivering a complete battlefield plus 2 starter armies in one box. Was dubious on the metal for a starter but Carlos showing why he has made it into a success with a well thought out reason for the choice.

This is an ingenious use of materials with those buildings, I’m really looking forward to this set and trying to get a following at the area’s FLGS.
I have been thinking of getting into Infinity for a while now and when this starter box was announced I thought that would be the way to go. Now that I’ve seen it, I’m sold 100%! I have to get myself one of these!

Exclusive pre-order minis. ( Urgh. I hate pre-order exclusives even if I understand the reason for them. )

No ‘full’ rulebook.
The flash on the figures was ridiculous for brand new figures.
It’s still impossible to field an all female army.

Does the pre-order have to be from anywhere specific in order to get the extra figure?

I love the fact that a small company has been able to build such a big game, and I’m sure that Carlos is a great guy. But living in Spain, his accent drives me nuts, almost to the point where this videos are unwatchable to me.
I have to agree. I have major trouble with accents at the best of times and it drives me nuts that I’ve missed out on a load of cool BoW vids due to Carlos’ accent.
I actually think this is the first Infinity vid i’ve made it all the way through and that was mainly because I just wanted to see what was in the box.
( Please note. This is a dig at me not Carlos. He comes across as a really great guy and you can tell he’s passionate about the game. )

I’m a big fan of using the box to support the building. As space means I don’t permanently construct paper buildings, they do have a tendency to sag when minis are placed on the roof.

A beautiful box set, gorgeous minis – they are just wonderful looking, never mind playing with them. Corvus Belli seem to put an awful lot of attention to detail and passion into their work, unlike certain other companies (who said Stormturd?)

Cool beans, Infinity looks so awesome but kinda complex compared to most games, or am I being dense?
I think that is the thinking behind having ‘starter rules’ in the box.
I’ve shown quite a few people how to play Infinity, and as a rule if you’ve played other wargames you should be able to pick this up without too much difficulty.
That being said, there is a lot of ‘stuff’ you can do – using camo, laying mines, covering fire etc. it can be a lot to think about at once, so I think it’s a great move to have just the starter rules in the boxset. Once you have understood the basic ‘reaction’ mechanic of the game (which is the big selling point for Infinity, IMO), then you download the full rules and get stuck in with all the more detailed stuff.
Nice set for beginners. Will the models, except for the limited ones. be available only in the starter or just like in the case of Bolts they will be sold in blisters foa a limited time?

And as some already have said: Although you might not play the included factions, this is an excellent “demo kit” to promote Inifnity in your FLGS.

Wayland games have just got my pre-order.
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on assembling Infinity miniatures. I am sure it’s just me, but I have never come across such glue resistant metal before. Gluing the antennae and fins on my Akalis Commandos was such a nightmare I thought I was developing Tourette’s syndrome because of it. I have tried a number of different super glues without much success. I would be grateful for any tips with this. Thanks

I’ve been slowly building up a terrain collection and Combined and Aleph force for a while now. Just convinced a friend to play and he went for Ariadna. Despite this it is still tempting but would have liked to see a full A5 3rd edition rule book in there to further entice those that have already made a start in the game. Only played a couple of games so far so really like the idea of building missions to introduce the rules. Obviously the models are ace though so still very tempted and it gives me another two factions I don’t have!!

Amazing starter set. I really don’t any of the factions included but this might be a great way to get new people in my area into Infinity. I get the terrain, they get the miniatures and we split the costs.

That set looks awesome. Even though I’m already collecting and playing Infinity for 2+ years and have plenty of miniatures that need some love I will still get this box.
I love the new miniatures, although the Brigada looks a bit macho aiming his heavy gun singlehanded. But I very much appreciate the resculpt of the Alguaciles and especially the entire Panoceania range. When I first got introduced to the game I never considered the ‘bunny-ears’, thinking it looked silly. I won’t mind owning and painting these new boys (and girl) in blue though.
The only thing that would make me buy into Infinity would be meeting VERY high standards of the recent excellent boxed stets like Open fire and Drop Zone Commander.
And they have done that , oh my gawd how good is this!
(I really need an early Birthday present, my missus will be buying me this soon!)

Without doubt, beautiful models. A lovely detailed map and great to see scenery in the box.
My only caveat is these are metals. Trying to pose plastics holding guns is blooming horrible. Doing the same with metals and superglue is an exercise in frustration.
I dunno. I really, really want to support these chaps but I’ll be honest: metal terrifies me. Pinning, having a 2mm contact point holding up a weighty arm, sticking your fingers together, models falling apart, snipping flash off and finding a delicate part attached…
I hope I am wrong: what are other people’s experiences of Corvus Belli metals?
The Infinity metals have always generally been quite good. I say this as someone who grew up putting metal fantasy dragons and landspeeders, so definitely important to make that distinction! These things are childs play by comparison.
That being said, there were a few ‘problem’ minis with some of the older minis in the range. But, there were complaints about those, and these days the new releases are very good. Also, their casting tends to be perfect, so no problems there.
Speaking as someone who has 50-60 Infinity miniatures, I have never once needed to use pinning (and that includes with the TAGs – the large robots). The pieces are usually delicate and not weight bearing, which helps. If you use a good quality medium superglue (in the UK we have Roket or Zzzaaaap – basically anything that isn’t cheap stuff) you should be fine.
My entry in Infinity will take place with this amazing starter box!! Can’t wait for it!
I’ve always been so close to jumping on infinity and this box/week of videos is likely to push me over the edge. With me wedding in 2 weeks I shouldn’t but I can see me crumbling.

Wow I play Combined and Aleph, but have always had a soft spot for those two factions… now I’m seriously debating buying that starter and forcing new people to play it.
This is really good looking set. Only thing is that it would had been nice if that playmat was made from better material than paper. Also I noticed that those female sculpts are posed like they would be posing for photo shoot instead of being in battle.

I really like the way to rules are slowly introduced with each new mission. Starter sets always have been a wonderful way to get into a game and, even though I don’t play any of those two factions, it’s a really tempting kit.

That video was great. So much more detail than in the snippets and photos I have seen on other sites. Having played Infinity for a few years, I was sceptical of the new sculpts etc, but they look great and the card stock terrain which reuses boxes is a stroke of genius.

I am really impressed by this box set. especially the terrain being included. I tried to get into infinity with a mate before and we struggled a lot with a both the translation of the rules and getting the terrain density right. we never cracked it and gave up. This is perfect its gives you just the amount of terrain you need. Ill be keeping an eye on this and if the price point is good picking one up.

I heard about Infinity about a month ago. right in the middle of all these sneak previews for Operation: Ice Storm and 3rd edition. This box looks about as perfect an introduction to Infinity as you could want. Contacted a few people who might be going to Gencon to grab this set for me, hopefully it’ll be one of the sets with the yellow sticker! This looks awesome!

As a starter set this looks amazing. Unfortunately I personally am just not that keen on the game. If they streamlined the rules and make the rulebook more logical (obviously just my opinion), they would take the gaming world by storm. Everything else is there. Waiting.

I might be the only one, but I’m entirely unimpressed.
The models are nice (if you like that particular look) but the terrain is a huge letdown. Necromunda had much better terrain and that was released years and years ago.
And you want just how much for a few models and a bunch of flimsy cardboard terrain?

It is so nice to see how far Infinity has come and what immense amounts of excitement it causes. All is well deserved, their products are top notch and I hope it will translate into sales for them.
I am really am very happy with their new design approach. I often tought their Minis were too convoluted with detail, while this led to impressive sculpts in its own right, their minis were not always that much fun to paint, sometimes it was even a pain to paint all the tiny straps and buttons. I like it when a mini approaches me as a painter by being more of a canvas to me and encourages me to swing my brush boldly instead of being something that is more akin to a color by numbers mini.
Loving the sculpts! This is a great way to get Infinity exposed to the masses. Operation Icestorm + Warcors = a bigger community. That’s a win for everyone!
I guess the question is now, how can anyone NOT play Infinity? The new sculpts are excellent. Looks like I’m also collecting Nomads now too.
I really can not recommend this game enough. Some of the rules can be confusing to begin with but once you’ve got your head around one or two (you always have the wiki on hand too) you’re away. Anyone sat on the fence, this is a great time to get involved.
That mobile brigada is absolutely fantastic.
So…this is it…no more excuses. Looks great and will finale drag me into Infinity…but how I will make time for this I have no idea at all 😉

This is a mighty attractive starter kit. When I looked at the game briefly back in 2009, I found the 2nd edition rules a bit off-putting. However, I absolutely love the small army sizes, sci-fi setting and those gorgeous minis. Hopefully the new edition will have a clearer translation and rule set.

My wife: We just bought a house! And you have tons to paint as it is. Me: But I wan´t it. My wife: I´m pregnant in the third month. You are gonna be a dad soon. I have been waiting for this since they announced it, and it is better than id hoped! I really like when play through rules are added in steps to ease you into a new system, and the sculpts are fantastic. Off to pre-order mine now and harrass my postman til it arrives!

Looks like a great starter set and with this release I may finally get into the world of Infinity. I definitely approve of the new art direction. Seems like a good value considering the minis are metal and you don’t need a ton of minis ( like 40k or warmahordes ) to play competitively.

Excellent Stuff. I already have some Micro Art Studio buildings that I use for other Sci Fi Skirmish games but that starter set is a must have. Great use of the boxes to give strength to the paper terrain. Interesting that Corvus Belli use 3D design but continue to produce metal miniatures. It’s explained why but starting a new edition would also give them the opportunity to release resin or plastic which I imagine would be cheaper to produce.
Looks like an amazing product, a great starter set, and a great introduction for players new to wargaming or Infinity. So, with that in mind, can anyone help me understand why it’s limited to 5000 copies only? That seems like a low number to me. Or have I got that all wrong?
5000 copies is for the limited edition with the additional figure. After these are sold it will be abvailable as the regular edition WITHOUT the additional miniature.

Can you quote this?
Because from the video they mention several times that 5000 is just for the exclusive CSU model. The bit about the new starter sets is that they will replace the existing Pano and Nomads faction starter minis with these new minis (minus the father knight and reverend healer, which remain exclusive to operation icestorm).
It would make zero business sense to limit Icestorm to 5000 copies (a very small number), it’s their gateway for new players.
That’s the way I see it. Surely a starter/gateway set should be as widely available as possible.
As I understand from the video:
– The limited edition Mercenary model is available only with those sets that are specifically “pre-ordered”, however many that is.
– Then the set itself is limited to 5000 copies (i guess that number includes those that get pre-ordered), but these sets do include the Father Knight and Reverend Healer (which are only available via Operation Icestorm and won’t be included in the individual faction starter sets when they’re released)
– After that…? Will there be another starter set? Different factions? Will the campaign rulebook be available separately. Have I got it all wrong? Who knows?

Finally! A box set to properly introduce people into Infinity. I cannot tell you how painful it is to see people trying to learn and play infinity on a 40k board. Makes me want to fall in love with infinity all over again.

Well, as I am a seasoned Nomad player since the beginning – the Interventor Morgana basically sold me in to the game – having Nomads as a starter faction made me to be a probable buyer of OP: Icestorm.
Now as I see the gorgeous amounts of wonderfullness crammed up in this box I am literally jaws to the floor and sold. How can I explain it plain and with demeanor? Uhm, lets say LEGEN … wait for it … DARY!
The box is epic, new gorgeous sculpted models, new units and rules, and an outstanding set of simple yet useful and handy game items and a game mat. Really all that you need to play and get going a full Infinity gaming experience! It also serves neatly as a demo kit to lure new players, which surely I would do with my friends not yet in the game.
Well done CB, heck, well friggin’ done. We know you to be the best in the industry but this it’s so outstanding and so great that it seems like dreaming. And all that stuff just 89.95,ok 90 €, kinda of a giveaway too! You set a standard to other companies not easy to cope with…

When I saw this unboxing I thought it look really good. However once I looked at ordering and saw the price point I had a couple of concerns. Now I have seen it on pre order for 20% off. At that price I think it reasonable value but still might have problems reaching out to a new player sitting in the shelf next too the likes of dark vengence, open fire, deadzone, and drop zone commander. Only an introduction rule book (new players might not know the full one is downloadable) card scenery and paper play mat might make it compare badly. At full price I personally would expect at the least full rules or a better material for the mat. All that said as someone who knows the game a little I hope to pick one up

With some of the best models in the market and a rule set that everyone loves is about time that Infinity has to have a starter set. Operation Icestorm is amazing, can wait to get my hands in one of these.
The boxed set is awesome. I’m a bit disappointed at the “templates” (one round punch-out cardboard round template and just one “Silhouette”, but no other silhouettes and no teardrop templates), but everything else is just fabulous.
Already preordered mine, it is a must-have. But why only 5000 copies? Surely as a starter set it makes more sense to be a permanent part of the product range?

Really enjoyed the commentary! I’ve been slowly painting my Acontecimento force and hope to play some games in 3rd
So disappointed with this starter. When I first saw pictures I figured the terrain would be plastic (like in Deadzone).
For $20 less you get plastic terrain, a rubber mat, and two factions in Deadzone. This product is severely overpriced.
I like how every mini has its own character. You do not see that often even in other skirmish games..
Not so sure about the paper terrain again, but the rest looks REALLY well.

Best starter set I’ve ever been interested in. I know not everyone is a fan of card terrain, but these are really-really well done. Can’t wait to get my hands on them.

As a Nomad, I auto-hate Pan O; however the new models in O:I may win me over. They all look fantastic and I especially like the Fusiliers.
This set looks awesome! I really like the terrain and love how it can be reinforced so easily. I am also glad that it will be available separately, as I know this will make getting started into Infinity much easier for the ‘terrain’ challenged. I think the set is a great value at ~$125 (less than $9 a model), but I hope that price tag doesn’t alienate new/younger players.

There is nothing in this box that is not absolutely fantastic, The overall design gives very distinct, yet a very technological feel to both factions, which are all rather beautiful sculpts in and of themselves. I especially love the redesigned heavy infantry, the Orc Trooper and Mobile Brigada have transformed from their previous somewhat awkward early day starter box models into sleek and lethal looking future soldiers worthy of any sci-fi battlefield. The Father Knight itself is an amazing piece, who looks especially intimidating and deadly. The contents including the mat, terrain, measure, and tokens are all fantastic additions for a starter set, and really go above the call of most other miniature games. I think that Corvus Belli has a real winner here.

This has been a long time coming and FINALLY I can pick up a set to introduce my mates to Infinity properly. I have been playing Warmachine a bit of late and the poor Infinity minis have sat in a drawer. But this changes everything…
