Ronnie and his motley crew give you the low down on the latest antics at Mantic!
Waaagh! ??? Isn’t that a Games Workshop thing?
omg sue them
@monly – we get it, we get it in every post you make, you like GW very, very much and are not a fan of how you percieve mantics busness plan to be. Maybe you havent been in the hobby very long to see the 200% plus increase in price of GW kits. Maybe you think they are the only company for minis that should exist and the others should be ground into dust. maybe you troll on skodas website because they make cars cheaper than ford. Mantic supply a demand for not cheap models, but reasonably priced models, did you read that, reasonably priced. and as for your comment Waagh being a GW thing, im pretty sure crying children own the patent on that one
rotfl. triple ‘like’
You tell that troll!
ouch! but fair points
Well reasonably priced doesn’t mean less quality either me being a orc fan and having a wide range of them from different makers can attest to the fact Mantic probably makes the best one out of them all . I got a few should probably snap a picture to show the difference in them after they receive some paint work. Just adding this not implying anything by doing so…
I’m totally past the flame war thing and currently setting sail to parts unknown
Do you think I care what you think? No, that freedom of speech. I cant understand the stupidity over this and people hating my comments. Is my OWN opinion people, get over it. I think Mantic’s marketing is unethical and thats it! Other people call them the Hero’s of fantasy and I just call them opportunists.
And yet you feel it necessary to but your head into every mantic thread and troll it. Seriously man you are asking for your bad commend rating. It’s obvious too that you care what we think because your responded to it.
No, I just express my opinion on every thread I come across. I visit this site every day, I can comment on articles you know, just because I dont share the opinion with you guys does not mean I cant give my opinion. Everyone loves Mantic games, but not for their game, oh no, just for what they do, which is provide you a Warhammer Fantasy army at a “reasonable” price, and thats a fair argument unless you get in your mind how unethical is to market yourself at the expense of others.
Why are Mantic’s Dwarfs larger and taller than GW Dwarfs then? Why are their elves thinner and smaller than GW elves then? You know, if they were just trying to make replacement models for Warhammer, you’d think they’d make ones that WERE IN SCALE.
Why are their new Orcs not being released with Spears? Why are they releasing a whole set with HALBERDS (Warhammer Orcs can’t use Halberds).
Logic: it’s annoying sometimes.
get a life..
The problem is monly that the point you keep trying to make isnt valid and is making you look silly.
But who cares? You are free to talk rubbish and people are free to point this out, carry on by all means
@poosh Mantic Dwarfs and Elves are made on a different style and fr the scale argument, they are on a 20mm base. Oh and people buy them for Warhammer. ,Mantic Orcs do not have Halberds. They are selling to the Warhammer player. I can go on and on but I wont, no matter what I say you are gonna suck up to whatever Mantic does cause they are selling you miniatures for the prices people wish Games Workshop would sell them. They are “the underdog taking on the big kind on the block”. Cool for you then. Keep buying from them people. I really do not care. I just give an opinion for Gods sake.
I just made the simple argument that Waaagh! is a GW thing and people bash on it for no reason. I just dont understand this. Why people start arguments when I just input my opinion. You want me to stay put and listen to all the bashing you guys trow at me? No, no one would. I respect everyones opinion. And on here this will be my last comment on this matter unless some pushes it. I just enjoy the website and would like to people to respect others opinion.
Oh Boy its monly busting another gangsta move… I don’t think people hate you or your comments- We don’t even know you-ok However you post the same rehash shit over and over again…
We get it man we know repeatedly what you think and so I think its more like nobody cares -OK
Its more like sorta turning creepy now like you have this sexual fantasy thing for guys sporting Orc Masks or something like this
EDIT: VIDEO REMOVED BY MODS – Guys Keep it Civil Kids Read and Watch this stuff too
MONLY just stop man your really freaking me out I’m getting mixed visions here
I’ve removed this comment and i’m sure you understand why. We can’t tolerate that here ok!
Sorry meant to be taken in a light hearted fashion. To kinda pull away from the obvious .
After the fact I was like oops it may not be the right course to take… But lets see if I can use this to make a point.
If we all stop and look from a distance this may be one of the best things to happen to the hobby as a whole ya it stinks that all this madness offloaded at break neck speed, but in the long run it can have positive impact.
You tube going down put BoW in a position to take it to the next level, whatever it may be I am certain they would do quite well.
Games workshop receives the tune up they need until then there actions are nothing but good for other game makers. Many doors will open in time due to there megalomania style moves.
More games means, more choices, means more people playing all choosing there favorite ones it may very well work out to all of our favor
Its been a tense few days and their needs be a pause. Cause the one thing that could stop it from turning positive is everyone bashing everyone else in anger including other game makers as well…
There is really no room for that thus my poor taste in comments is no different than the comments that still remain and yes I wouldn’t say “tolerate” but we can’t afford to keep carrying on in this manner.
Only guilty of trying to snap everyone out of it at the end of day hopefully it worked
If we want to see things change for the positive.
I agree, GWs price increase is one of the best changes for the better. People will buy less and less from GW and people will start looking for alternavite games. I will get into Malifaux and more now into Warmachine and will try now Hordes. I think people will think this way too and expand. I like allot Warhammer Fantasy, but Oh man do I like the fluff of Warmachine and the game overall is superb. The fluff in Malifaux is superb but I have no read the rules yet. I hope GW market will decrease to a level where other game companies will shine more and more to the GW level(I’m looking at you Privateer Press). And out of this hope GW will get their head out of where the sun does not shine and start “seeing the error of their ways”.
Yes every1 got freedom of speech and we also got the freedom to thumb shit down.
Point being the thumbs up or down thing is a rogue one… personally I would still be doing youtube for this site if it was still up. I’m more than happy to return to that once they get it taken care of…
I’m more about staying on top of the gaming stuff than anything else…
@monly I agree the fluff to warmahordes is top shelf. plus the modeling takes your skills to task. Is there fluff for kings of war and how is it ??? Also don’t take to heart me using you to pound home a thought of mine and thanks for being a good sport- its cool to disagree at times never the less…
You need to take a uni module or two in Ethics if you’ve somehow worked out they’re ‘unethical’. While we’re here, is it “unethical” for GW to copy all of the material and art from The Mummy movies? . Is it ok for them to rip off the Terminator franchise what about Lord of the Rings ? Or maybe Chronicles of Riddick ? Is that all unethical? I mean their taking other peoples’ (apart from the LOTR) design and art, and reproducing them as “their own”. Is that ethical? Is that cool? Those Tau look a lot like Battle-Tech for some reason…
@poosh you make probably the most valid point of all. If we were to operate under the ethical standard given by monly. You would have DC comics at odds and in conflict with Marvel everytime there is a new super hero that wears tights with brightly colored underwear on the outside. All of todays country music wouldn’t sound like Alabama . Everything that’s exotic to eat wouldn’t taste like chicken.
In all forms of art there will be a basis or similar pattern or style found some where else. Therefore and foremost you can not make copyright claims against intellectual property based on similarity.
What came first ? The 40k Space Marine or the Star Wars Storm Trooper. At the end of day it becomes irrelevant.
What came first ? The 40k Space Marine or the Star Wars Storm Trooper.
The starship troopers space marine
Tell me about it. It’s a joke how some people don’t realise GW steal the artwork and designs from entire franchises – the Dark Eldar are mostly straight out from the movie Chronicles of Riddick, for example (cool little sci-film that slipped under the radar). I notice Monly has nothing to say to this. I think ripping off the Mummy films is the worse “offense”. But I actually love how GW steals from everything and turns it into one (two) universes of awesomeness.
Actually it is unethical, and unoriginal (I am talking about the Tau). Since they made them to appeal the Japanese crowd (or Chinese, cant remember) when they open their first GW store in that country, and to be honest, I despise the Tau. But where did they ripped of on Terminator or Riddick? The Mummy thing is valid in some way but if I’m not mistaken D&D did that stuff too, so we can assume its being taken from both. And for all honesty, I dont like Tomb Kings fluff that much, however I love Warhammer Fantasy fluff so much. Infact thats what I like Warhammer Fantasy so much. I however dont like 40k. I’m a fantasy junkie and thats Why I love Warmachine and am getting into Malifaux.
“Valid in some way” ? ha ha.
Pick up a Necron. Now go watch the Terminator movies. Done.
The Dark Eldar seem to largely based on the designs for the Necromunders or whatever in the Riddick movie. Look at the iconagraphy and art design for them then look at the Dar Eldar, especially look at the art graphics shown when the credits roll.
The Skaven – apparently – are lifted from a series of British novels about ran-people living underground, affected by nuclear bombs or something (Read warpstone. I haven’t read these novels.
Even the Wood Elves are based on certain kinds of elves in the LOTR novels.
I don’t mind GW doing this, I like the Tau. It’s not ‘unethical’ for GW to take mechs and manga stuff and shove it into an army. As far as I know the original “battle-tech’ or mechs were lifted from the ideas of the novel Starship Troopers. Who cares? I imagine loads of people wondered “what does a massive army of Terminators look like?” GW delivered. Do you know how difficult it is to come up with an original idea in 2011? Almost everything has been done before, what’s left is to attempt to “make it your own” which is what GW does. I don’t object, and I wouldn’t call it unethical. ‘Cheeky’ maybe.
We know what you think and we disagree with you, deal with it
No we Don’t hate it that you have your own opinion, thats fine. your comments about Mantic’s business plan being unethical, some people may disagree completely. But thats your opinion which is fine, What is getting on peoples nerves is that’s ALL you EVER talk about! You keep repeating yourself over and over and over and again and again and again and again. We get it! Theres a difference between giving your own opinion and Spamming every single damn topic about Mantic games. I mean for God’s Sake your Even doing that on Youtube!
I smell smoke. Maybe it was the burn!
A blister pack? Impulse taking over…. need to know what was in blister…. gimme gimme!!! PLEASE NOTE MY GRUBBY LITTLE HANDS REACHING OUT AND DROOL
Yeah but I bet its not made out of Finecast!!! lol. I hope it goes well for Ronnie and the boys, wish them all the best.
What IS in that blister?
Hope the pet orc is house trained!
Re IP of the Waaaagh EVERYTHING is a GW thing… apparently /cynicism
Great Work Mantic! Really are moving forward in the right direction.
“Yes Son, they’re like Warhammer Orcs – but unlike Warhammer Orcs my lad, they actually look good, and they’re affordable!” – Guy with sense
I like Ronnie, and I like that he addresses his customers directly. I’m glad they are making “new heads” for the orcs though….that about the only thing keeping me from buying a whole truckload of them.
I’m in a similar position. I love some of the helmeted heads, meanwhile many of the others especially the bare heads really did nothing for me so I’m very interested indeed.
I hope mantic keep up the great work and get more of a market share
It is great to see Mantic going from strength to strength, big fan from the start…and honestly I think they are doing things the right way. I agree with you guys on all counts, and when I saw the first post was hidden, and then saw who it was from…didn’t even bother to read it.
Awesome, Ronnie does the business once more…much prefer the Mantic Orcs to the GW ones now that I’ve seen em up close and personal. Roll on Mantic SciFi!
perhaps the reason the CEO of mantic goes on videos is becasuse he isnt afraid that the community would tear him to shreds unlike other companies
too true! and he used to work for GW so thats proof that anyone can redeem themselves
Not to mention that I am sure if people did have complaints he would be more than happy to answer them in a sensible manner, and perhaps even take them on board and change things.
*sound of GW heads fainting at the thought*
How come they are using a guy in a Warcraft orc mask in their video? That mask is part of the World of Warcraft Halloween range. I think Mantic are ok as a ‘value’ fantasy models maker. I bought some of their skeletons on special offer from Hobbycraft just after Christmas. I’m glad they were on special as I would have been upset to have paid full price. I like what they are doing as an idea but there are plenty of companies other than GW coming for my cash and they just don’t do it for me.
That’s not a mask, that’s just Ronnie’s face.
gotta do my elves first but might just get these look good too
I wish them all the best personally… not a fan of all of their products (love few, like some, really dislike elves) but they seem to know how to do things right way and they actually seem to care for the customer..
“Waaagh” is actually a J. Tolkein thing, isn’t it? lol! jk
How long have Mantics been selling minis? approx 18 months? They have done so much for the community in such a short time.
Whether the models are to taste or not, they sure seem to value their potential customers. From the start they have been using the internet to communicate (a two way process) rather than just make proclamations from an ivory fortress. They are out there mixing amongst the gaming community. I am sure as a young company they will get some things wrong, but presently they seem open enough to listen and hopefully learn.
I have seen established model kit making companies putting test shots on the internet, and when criticised have taken that on board and made changes.
GW must be the only hobby company in the industry that shut themselves away. I have honestly never known anything like it, and will never understand such bizarre behaviour from a company invoved in recreational goods and services. If GW were making top secret systems for the military rather than toy soldiers I could understand it.
Sorry for the off topic ramblings, but I have seen undue criticism about Mantic today, when they have taken the time to put out these bulletins. I really hope Mantics go from strength to strength.
id love to see mantic do a tomb kings range…that would be awesome!
I like mantic because i can AFFORD THEM.
I don’t see why people think Mantic should bring out some 50 page ruleset. They’are a young company finding its feet, with limited money. What Mantic have promised is that their Kings of War ruleset will ALWAYS be free, and that it will evolve as time goes by. ALSO they create forums for everyone to test the army lists – in fact the rules were created with players guidence and feedback.
It’s really crazy that people are saying “pfff, Mantic’s rules as lame” given it’s their first attempt and a simple system to get you playing in 30 minutes.
I like how certain people keep ignoring the fact that Mantic’s dwarfs and elves are completely out of scale with their Warhammer counterparts. If Mantic desired *purely* to produce replacement models for Warhammer they would be in scale, simple. I think it was a bad move to scale the models differently as it stopped people from using Mantic models as decent warhammer substitutes.
GW are the ones out of scale lol (only joking, just have a personal preference for true scale proportions) Look at the Perry Brothers Elves and Dwarves for LoTR, excellent sculpts imho
It isn’t the size difference that puts me off mixing so much as the Bearded Eggs GW style that I have from the BoSP set will look even sillier next to Mantics! lol
If I decide to expand Fantasy armies in the future it will prolly be with Mantics and not that bothered by differences. They can be from another part of the fictional world as Pygmies are related to Masai and to me by our humanity
See! Size doesn’t matter after all. lol
Check out Westwind’s “Dwarf Wars” miniatures – they are more in scale with Mantic’s and offer a nice range of cheap miniatures. Good, solid. Not GW quality, but good enough!
More temptations from Mantic. I do like the way that in a video about an orc release they hint at a mysterious blister pack? While being sat in front of what looks like concept work for a dwarf kings hold expansion with what looks like the word elves written in one of the rooms?
I personally don’t think that Mantic’s sculpts are all that great. They get a lot of praise for miniatures that I think are sub par when compared to many other miniatures companies in this vast, opinion saturated, world. The sculpts are improving over time and I can see Mantic really grabbing a large chunk of the market in the very nearest of futures. That being said I think that the folks down at Mantic are not any more opportunistic than those at GW, in fact I’d say they are far less opportunistic. If I was in the market to start my own Miniatures Wargame company I think that the more “correct” –although that is a poor word choice– business model would be that of Mantic.
I dislike some of the mantic sculpts however the undead range has a lot of good stuff in it. Mantic is great, cheap(ish) figures that whilst not top tier are superb gaming pieces from a bunch of guys who are fun and a little bit mad but with sound business savvy. They feel like early GW and thats a good thing…lets hope they steer clear of mistakes made by others.
