Warren is joined by Alessio and Andy from Warlord to play his first game of Bolt Action with the Assault on Normandy set! I think it's time we got drafted and ready for some 28mm World War II action don't you?

All goes well until Warren insists it is legit for a drop pod full of SS SMs should be roll for on turn 3. 😛
Ive not actually seen this played before…
I want to start this!!! I love the Shermans…. Its nice to see some BIG tanks… It looks a well thought out game….
hummm
YES!!!!!!! Was waiting for Bolt Action for sooooo long. This deserves more coverage imho, maybe at least a week? 😀 In fact maybe longer could be good as the educational value would be very impressive!!
Big thumbs up from me.. Thanks!
Actually really enjoyed that first part. Have never even thought about giving a more realistic one a go, might be tempted to in the future! Love the gaming board.
Great game design.
Great game play.
Great video.
PLEASE DO MORE !!!!
I’ve used the rules to play VBCW, though not actually for WW2. They’re quick and elegent, as you’d expect given the designer. The main issue we found with them was the bigger the game, the more activation sequence creaked. We had games where one player would get several activations at the start of a turn before the other player had one and it proved to be a big advantage. At smaller games it works fine though.
Great stuff, worth the watch! Keep up the action!
If there’s one game I’ve said I’m going to get into, more than any other then this is it.
I think it’s about time I just got on and did something about it.
I have to say this is great to see these videos. I’ve been kept from gaming as much as I would like to due to some uncontrollable events so its nice to live vicariously through these vids and see some new games besides the tired WH40k to boot. I love Warren’s enthusiasm. I am quite enjoying the game mechanics behind Bolt action. I had seen it mentioned on the website before but haven’t taken the time to really look into it (more of a board game, fantasy and sci fi gamer vs historicals) looks like a really fun game though. looking forward to part 2… does the StuG Survive?
Time to buy up their Sherman / firefly stock 😀
oh and rule books I guess.
Does anyone know if they do things like Tank companies (what to make Irish Guards again) or 29th Inf etc? does it work like that or is it just make a list from this type of thing???
What if you wanted, say, 20 Stugs? Painted silver? With hood ornaments, and speakers blaring German opera (Wagner, I’m guessing)? Could they use red smoke screens? Maybe they have 20 foot banners attached to them, like Samurai warriors had on their horses.
I think this what you’re really asking.
This game is more about infantry than tanks, but i think there is a pdf on their site with more tank stuff
The armies are made up of points, just make a list. They do Shermans and Fireflys! And transfers for the vehicles for British Guards or US divisions. The link shows a firefly and Cromwells but you could swap for Shermans!

there is a pdf that lets you take tank companies 😉

and with the deal that warlord do its a bargin!
What I find I like the best of these demos over others doing demo videos is that Beasts does not edit out the ‘thinking’ times of the players. Those moments the players are trying to look at the board and figure out what to do with their units. Leaving this part in makes the demos really like a one on one event rather than a rush to make something to show on the site.
That reminds me of those video batreps people make where they take a turn and afterwards show you what happened. No, I want to see what happened DURING the turn! Props to BoW for doing the latter!
A fascinating game mechanic – I really like it. It adds another degree of uncertainty to those best laid plans of mice and men.
Best part of the video is when Warren contemplates charging the Yanks with the StuG. Priceless – 10/10 for enthusiasm!
…..PART TWO NOW!!!!…….sorry…..by the way warren read mi mind, running people over with tanks…HELLL YEAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!!……
That was brilliant. Great video guys
I had a feeling I’d love Bolt Action and … wow! I love this – especially the order dice. They really do add such a lot of tension to a turn. Warlord has a fantastic-looking game on its hands. Please get part 2 up there as soon as you can.
+1 for a Bolt Action week (despite the objections from my wallet and painting table).
Argh! How could you leave us on a critical roll like that?
Loved this. I liked how disappointed the red-shirts were that Warren was rolling so well. If I ever get to play Warren I know it would be an internal struggle to either punch him in the face or cheer him on. Maybe both.
Whenever Warren showed a smidge of historical inaccuracy, Alessio folded his arms. 🙂
Great!
Just to continue frothing, I need to mention the pinning mechanic, too. It makes your units seem more realistic … more human – especially with the commander whizzing between them trying to encourage/cajole/bully them into stepping into that hail of bullets.
plus remember for tanks alot of kits out there are 1:48 (ok its a little bit big but close enough) hobby boss to T34s and KV1s for about a tenner, add that to the plastic soldier company stuff and you could have yourself quite a reasonably sized force quite cheaply
I took a lot away from this video. One – I really like the rules. Two – Painted up on a tabletop like that the miniatures look great. Three – I just rediscovered my love for the WW2 setting. Four – From now on you have to use that infantry cam in all of the demo / how to play videos! 😀
What a great video, I have been really looking forward to seeing Bolt Action and to have the game designer there is just awsome. I can’t wait till the next one.
I’d like to know more about the terrain… Is it all custom built? Was that house from a kit or a particular manufacturer?
Warlord Games….you simply must Kickstart several starter boxes so I can go all in on this one!!!
Yup! These rules do look great! Makes me tempted to put up the rule book
Wow, thanks for the video. The order mechanic is so simple but makes the game so exciting. The table made me drool as well. Is there any reason this order mechanic couldn’t be transferred to any turn based game?
Could the backstagers simply use this for the inheritance games. Inheritors can call a bolt action turn, put double number of dice in the bag for the inheritors so their units have twice the chance of going first… (but each unit still only goes once)…….I’m going to try that…..so cool.
This really is such an awesome game!
I got Allessio to sign my Bolt Action and Deus Vult books last year in Antwerp.
The thing I like about Bolt Action is that you can go historical, or build up a non-historical force. I am building up a British Airborne list. It is modelled on the Arnhem landings, most of the infantry squads are done now, except for some Piat-crews.
Next up are the recce-sqdn of major Freddy Gough.
And if I expand after that, I will get some armour in, from the guys that tried to reach the para’s over land. One problem is where I bring in these lovely SAS jeeps…
In short, lovely game, awesome company and a brilliant bat-rep. Kudos all around, and a free cookie for Warren and his Tank Shock Stug of Eternal Doom.
That is very interesting turn system. In some ways it does reminds me about old Warzone were both players could activate only one unactivated squad or unit during they turn and use that do perform wanted actions.
SOLDIERCAM®
Hope this becomes a regular feature.
Bolt Action has become a favourite at our club.
There are even some 40K guys experimenting with using the dice out bag activation system.
Its a lot more fun than the old eighties i-go / u-go system. 🙂
Great video chaps, I have just got the game myself and this is really helping me understand the rules. Ta
Guys, I can’t leave my bed because of a hernia, so I have been tapping refresh for 3 hours now just to get to see part 2!
Cool video guys look forward to part 2, nice ending in part 1 like the old Flash Gordon serial, turn up next week to see what happens does the Stug survive.
Like the Bolt Action mechanics, down in the mud with the PBI and you cannot really script what’s going to happen next as it depends on what is pulled out of the bag first, looks like I am going to have to try this out.
Keep up the good work really enjoying this, and the FoW series videos.
Like the video. Great mechanics to the game. It reminds me somewhat of epic armageddon. The alternative turn system gives a more dynamic and realistic feel to the game. It also makes it more far more strategic and reliant less on luck in my opinion. Can’t see why more games have not adopted this system as standard.
cracking vid for a cracking game, has got me right in the mood for the warlord open day 😉
Now I really liked that one, Flames of War always seemed appealing but the scale just doesnt suit me so I never took it further despite my ww2 fascination, but this game has very interesting mechanics and a scale that I enjoy painting in.
I like the way it plays, although I think the British Army and the good old churchill tank is for me, rather than the US and Germany.
No, no, no, no,no!
Curse you Warren and Allessio.
I purposely avoided the Bolt Action site as I am still building my FoW army and I knew I would love it.
Great video. What a demo game. It’s a huge plus you have the designer sat there while you learn. Does Allesio do parties?
I have to get the starter set now and convince my FoW buddy who is new to gaming to shell out more cash.
I love the mechanic that makes the whole game seem more personal.
Great that it suits skirmish level games too. My wallet is gonna be thankful for that.
Bolt Action ftw???
thanks to this video I have just picked up the rules, some wargames factory soviet infantry, a hobby boss t34/76, some order dice and a soviet paint set. If I get divorced its warrens fault for doing such a good job of making this game look awesome!
Best way to learn a game … read the rules and watch a couple of uVids by the game creator!
Thanks BoW & Warlord Games.
Enjoyed both demo vid`s, now started to collect a “German” force. Not sure which faction i`ll be collecting, but will choose once i get the German army book……………….
