Romain breaks out his master painting kung fu to paint up one of the USCR minis from Mercs. In this one we see the beginnings of the base colours for this kick ass future warrior.

I didn’t pick up on the shoulder bags either Romain, hehe. I don’t think he was worried about camouflage one bit, as he has 2 great big hand cannons, which would indicate he wants some attention!! hehe 😛
Never tried painting with just washes, may give it a go when I get chance.
Would also like to see a show and tell of your own personal models/armies/force. Could do wonders for inspiration. 🙂
Trust me, if I had the time to paint a complete force, you’d know about it… 🙁
That said, thank you for your amazing friendliness and your continued viewership !
OOOOh you fibber 😀 Nice Interview buddy, t’was a delight to read. 🙂

” Do you preffer painting some infinity faction more than the rest?
I have no real preference… Everything is interesting in the Infinity range ! I like the look of the Nomads (In fact I own a Nomad force… Corregidor, if you must know), but I find that Yu-Jing and Aleph are also gorgeous.”
Never said it was all painted…
:O I am very disappointed in your. You have really let yourself down! 😛 hehe
:'(
Well, if there is a Frenchman around, it’s best to keep an eye on them. hehe. 🙂
Never mind the display then 🙁 I’ll find them elsewhere!! http://bernohn.blogspot.com.ar/2012/08/interview-with-romain-painter-of-beast.html
The t’internet electrons get everywhere! You have been warned!! 😛
Look forward to part 2 🙂
Really enjoyed the video, looking forward to the next installment.
Like broadside, never painted a mini strictly with washes. I am usually a fan of more bold colour schemes but I am gonna give this a try and see how it looks “in flesh” so to speak rather on a laptop.
I do have one question. You mentioned a pre-shade by using a grey undercoat and then you mention white. Is this a grey undercoat with a white drybrush?
I really like the fact that you can identify detail easier with a pre-shade.
Would love to know how its acheived.
Still, cant wait fro part two.
Undercoat in grey, then spray white from above in order to lighten where the light would hit.
But I guess you can apply it more accurately if you wanted to paint it on. I don’t think there is a fixed way to paint. Although Romain has a LOT of good tips. No1 = Wet Palette!!! 🙂
You’ve got that right, broadside…
There’s no good way to paint, there’s only the way that works for you !
Thanks for your kind words !
There’s a pre-shading tutorial in Backstage on BoW…
The effect I’m using here is obtained by priming grey (with a spray can), then spraying white on top of the miniature (but not from every angle, not in the recesses).
It’s quite easy. Try it for yourself, and you’ll see !
Very interesting, and I’m particularly enjoying having two painters to contrast/compare styles and pick out something that’s ‘me’.
spray it red and dip in strong tone army painter is more me really, but one day, I’ll progress 🙂
Thanks… That’s what I’m here for !
We’ll make GD material out of you yet… 😉
What paints are you using mainly? I am switching from GW paints and have tried army painter and love the dropper bottles but they have a habit of clogging up even with the lids on firmly.
Cheers
I’ve never had too much trouble with clogging, except with some tones (black and earth brown, mainly)… And that’s easily remedied anyway. Vallejo is a great and varied brand !
Privateer Press does wonderful things, IMHO, and has the exact thickness I require in a paint, but that’s my personal opinion : most people are used to a different texture.
The new GW brand is still super expensive for what it is, but has its moments… It’s quite good, as long as you don’t mind glossiness and washes.
The Army Painter range is quite flowy, and very good indeed, especially at that price… That’s what I use in tutorials, even if I don’t have many of them at home.
There’s plenty of other good brands… Coat d’Arms, Tamiya, Foundry (although this one was a bit disappointing to me), and so on. I suggest you shop around ! Do not hesitate to mix and match !
You might be interested in searching for the few articles I’ve written on brands of paint, right here on the BoW website. They were done a while ago, but I’ve graded the main brands you can find, including the old GW range (not the new one).
There’s also a video about Warpaints (the Army Painter) to supplement the dated article, and another one about the Secret Weapon washes.
Have to agree with the big R here. Vallejo is amazing!! and a huge range to choose from. I made the switch from GW paints by buying the Vallejo cases of Game colour and Model colour. Game colour has nice vivid colours that you would mainly use for fantasy armies and the Model colour is great for more subdued colours you would find in WW2 games and the like. They also do Model Air range which is VERY nice and has some great metallics. I personally use the Model Air metallics like normal paints as the pigment is really fine.
I still use my REALLY out GW paint (when they were made by Coat d’arms) and I can still open them 15yrs after I bought them, and they are like new!! 🙂 I have relegated my last batch of GW paint to painting terrain and little odds and ends I don’t care about tbh.
P3 paints are nice and opaque, which can reduce your time painting a fair bit if you want models done quick. It is really nice to use to, so I would recommend them also. 🙂
So in brief: Get your arse down the shops and bag some Vallejo and P3, Vallejo is more available from my experience though. But t’internet shopping can land you easy deals. 🙂
Don’t waste you GW paints though, as they make great projectiles, you can wash the paint down the sink and use the pots for mixing other paints in or maybe a glass eye washing receptacle. 😀 hehe
great comments about the paints their broadside…I myself last week dumped some of my GW paints and snagged some P3 paints for my new Menoth starter kit.
