June 21, 2017 by crew
We dive deeper into the history of the period this Blood & Plunder Week as we look at the miniatures game set in the as the crew from Firelock Games tell us all.
Back Blood & Plunder: No Peace Beyond The Line On Kickstarter Now
We chat about some of their source material like the book “The Buccaneers of America” by Alexandre Exquemelin who was actually a sailor in the period. It’s a fascinating time with all sorts of privateers & pirates committing gruesome, but also, heroic acts.
Mike Tunez from Firelock Games is just busting at the seams with all manner of information about these buccaneers, massive pirate armies, tactics for capturing ships and more!

What do you like best about this time period?

Old Panama… Spanish Colonial Castles… Justin is clearly trying to plan a holiday… did not expect to hear so much about siege warfare in the period and region but it was very interesting; hope there is more scope to re-enact such battles in the expansion!
Anybody know if that book is currently in print?
If only there was a large online book store where one could look and find the book 🙂
$0.99 if you own a Kindle
There’s a bazillion copies on eBay. And the big online book shops all list it as in stock.
This period is a good period for adventurer and opportunist.
For more information on Morgan you can look at recent discovery about Port Royal: very interesting with its 3D rending of what was the pirate’s city.
Taking ships with canoes? Wow!
not the same period or place but there is a case of cavalry taking ships elsewhere for something weird
That would be the british capturing a Dutch fleet stuck in the ice if I remember correctly 🙂
Haha yep the fleet got frozen in and they just walked up and took it. Although it now looks like the fleet surrendered when the ice froze and the cavalry just happened to take them.
Although it is on my list of “Wow if I had the room I’d build that display board”. For gaming purposes it was a battle.

Liking the historical background. Liking even more the idea of Firelock making some forts 😀
Who needs the fantasy of Pirates of the Caribbean when you have masses of rich evidence and stories about the real historical inspiration to call on?
If you would like to watch something a little closer to the truth, find the series Black Sails.
Great series, except for the 21th century profanity. I didn’t know 17th century pirates used the word f**k in each second sentence…
The Deadwood writers did the same thing, but they did it for a good reason, which was that the swearing would have no force with a modern audience if it was authentic to the time.
So what would authentic 17th century swearing sound like?
if only i had the funds i could get my own fleet of buccaneers
Very interesting, must have a search for that book.
great video very interesting! if i have to pick a period in time which I like the most it would be 1600 – 1800, the golden age of piracy in particular.
I absolutely love B&P. Three of us in my local club picked up stuff during the first kickstarter. Amazing miniatures. Awesome rules. I have backed this KS also.
Very cool. Kickstarter starts today too.
Its nice to see a bit of the research they have put into this game.
Love the theme, love the period.. give me my Dutch buccaneers!
Kindle edition for £3.47, don’t mind if I do.
Ok, This one sounds really good! Would be a good compliment to the Old West genre we play.
Love the time period 😀 . Faction of choice is split between the English or the Unaligned.
I really like the wild and outrageous charters and setting for this period
It would be cool to see even more historical mini commanders.
So Disney didn’t properly depict Caribbean history? ;P
Very nice those historical titbits
very nice game, I am very interested to see more captains soon and more variety of poses and units
Very cool.
I could listen to these fellas talk pirates all day.
whenever I here the name Henry Morgan I think of Bob Marley and Peter Tosh.
Great background info … helps build a picture of the time period and major players for people like me that don’t know a lot about it
That portrait of Morgan…did his eyes follow anyone from side to side?
Eat your heart out mates! Or, eat his heart out…or, here eat this heart…
A little history never hurt any one . Lol
Always nice to learn about the history of that time.
If you look hard enough there is so many weird and wonderful (maybe awful) stories out there that matches any fantasy character or tale. Think this game has peaked my interest and would more with a free starter set, nudge, nudge, wink, wink.
I love the level of research they went into with this game, really lifts it up a few notches…and yet the they kept the gameplay looking so fun!!
I really like this game. I will be making a substantial investment during the Kickstarter. Check out the 3D printable fort from Laser Dream Works for this period.
Great characters. What a rich history.
Just backed the new KS ,can’t wait to get into this game
Cool stuff, who need fiction, when we have history, like this?
Really interesting to hear about their actual histories. Flamboyant, brutal and short lives. Perfect for tabletop gaming.
Forts?! Awesome!
Great stuff, I could get right into the historical info on it’s own.
I love the old Dutch texts on the artworks from the book.
Captain Morgan & coke. Had to say it.
Pirates and ninjas are awesome!
In fact that period of time, like 1600-1700 is cool, I’m playing now by fire and sword from wargamer games Studio and its full of conflicts in Europe so those translated to overseas areas too, Spain vs France, France vs United Kingdom, the Spanish crown vs all over others, few ones stays on his side.. and lot of his colonial gold goes to other countries.
The more i see about this game the more i want it. My wallet have a different opinion on it.
Cool background
Edward Teach soon please!!!!
great stuff, really liking the sound of this 🙂
Brutal as!
Yarr,
Alexandre-Olivier Exquemelin great french pirate
After watching Black Sails fancy trying this.
I’ve spoken with apes more polite than you
#insultswordfight
Cool little background into the history of the period.
I know he’s a bit outside the period, but I would love to see Stede Bonnet “the Gentleman Pirate” on the table at some point.
Great characters with more to come in the new KS. With the possible addition of Forts this is just going to get better!
Avast me hearties!
Nice to see the effort went into solid research!
Some of these guys’ names are hard.. Lolololonice?
so different from any other game
It’s this dedication to details that really separates the B&P guys from alot of other pirate game makers. As a history buff myself I can respect that, although the monkey with a gun that took over facebook is pretty cool. 🙂
Woah, wait, did Mike say they’re going to be making forts?!?
Awesome run down. It really does sound brutal but i suppose history is. The future forts sound interesting, somewhere for my future pirate force to raid 🙂
Disney never told it like this.
Forts? I’d love me some forts…
Some great stories in this period. A world of adventure and the unknown that we don’t have in the same way anymore.
I’m excited for the Dutch and to get a bunch of the unaligned. Heck, I want them all. I better win lotto soon! The more I see, the more I am excited for this game. Gah, why did I miss the first KS!?!
Also, if you don’t pick me to win a prize: Walk the plank, ya scurvy dogs!
I am really looking forward to Firelock making Forts.
Forts coming too. This is fast turning into some serious hobby time
cool history
While epic and powerful, I like the idea of making my own pirate leader or royal officer more. Will character creation rules come or we stuck with basic officers?
Oh man, a coast line table with a fort sitting a bit further inland. That’d be amazing. Really looking forward how Firelock Games’ fort is going to turn out.
Really great way of introducing the game, factions, character, abilities and whatnot, it’s been pretty easy to follow through
great more historical situations than in famous movies
Were there actually any decent people in history?
Interesting about Panama City.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrr! Shiver me timbers!
Really interesting to hear about the faces. Hovering over the Pledge button!
Thanks for the insights. It sure does add some flavor to the game
Very interesting time period!
Very interesting video, thank you. 🙂
Pirates!!!!! All week. Yea!!!!!!!
Very interesting
Once again we are shown that fact is stranger than fiction.
Some really nice historical touches in this game which is really nice to see.
I keep forgetting that actually these were real people
Damn and I was gonna go with research being Pirates of the Caribbean.
Wow! Some of the history this game’s based on is really intriguing!
Man! History, Pirates, Privateers, Sailing ships with actual boarding parties what more could you want!
