Weekender: AdeptiCon Live Blog & Deadzone: Infestation Kicks Off!
March 21, 2015 by dignity
We had one hell of a weekend last week with the Dropzone Commander Boot Camp but that doesn't mean we're stopping! Welcome to The Weekender!
Don't forget you can head on over and watch all of our Boot Camp Live Blogs on the link above and our AdeptiCon 2015 coverage too before we dive into getting excited over a new expansion to the board game of Spartacus with The Shadow of Death.
Lloyd has also been searching far and wide for some interesting 1/48 scale miniatures and we make sure to bring in John to have a chat with him about it.
Of course it wouldn't be a hobbytastic weekend without some Kickstarters to check out and we have yet another big one from Mantic while Ares Games have delved deep into the archive of MASSIVE planes to bring you Giants of the Sky.
We'll also be announcing the winners of the Dropzone Commander Two Player Starter Sets so keep an ear to the ground to find out if you won!

Happy Saturday Chaps
Shaping up to be a great show 🙂
happy saturday
Fokker was pronounced correctly.
On a side note it means breeder as in some one who breeds dogs or horses.
Nein! Zis ‘Fokker’ vas a ‘Messerschmidt’!!! ; )
don’t forget their was Fokker in WWII as well?
happy Saturday.
As for warpath my understanding is Mantic rushed in headlong into it, and are now taking the time with Dreadball and Deadzone to flesh out the races/locations/story. The plan being that all models for Deadzone will work in Warpath, and vice versa.
The Deadzone kickstarters have built up quite a reasonable range of unit types and terrain, which combined with the fledgling warpath models that were already released have given quite a selection, for example combining the Warpath and Deadzone minis the Forgefathers have 6-7 units, 3 heavy weapons and a walker.
Hmm……. it seems the Forgefathers Iron Warriors and Orx Marauder Grunts, the first warpath plastics (rehashes of the fantasy sprues) are no longer on the Mantic site………….
Mantic have said the FFs would get a resculpt, and the new renders were shown at the last Open Day, and very tasty they looked too.
I originally came into wargaming from scale modelling many many moons ago, and I still prefer a more detailed kit. This is reason why I opted to do Bolt Action in 1/72 scale, plus there is a bigger variety of kits to choose from and it’s cheaper. There are a couple of brands that are more suited to someone who wants to build fast and get the kits onto the table; Plastic Soldier and Armourcast, both of these producers you get multi vehicles in a box, for PS is generally 3 and in the case of Armourcast it’s two.
The infantry can be problematic because some manufacturers use the bendy type of plastic and others like Valiant use multi part hard plastic. The sculpts have gotten a lot better at this scale in recent years, with some excellent results. I would recommend checking out the website; http://www.plasticsoldierreview.com/Index.aspx. This site reviews every make and period of 1/72 miniatures (infantry) with some good quality images of the product, so you know what to expect when you purchase the goods. Generally one box of infantry is all that’s needed, as most boxes will be 40-60 troops though depends on the manufacturer.
So far I’ve started building a German army, which has cost me very little compared to friend who has invested in an army at 28mm. My next plan is to build a US army for the European theatre of war. Once that’s done Im thinking Desert Rats and Afrika Korp.
Great show
Just too bad it seems like it is forcing me to look at 2 great looking Kickstarters …
Hobbyboss are good kits
Happy Saturday to you all 🙂
happy saturday guys and congratulations to those lucky, lucky people. now back to the painting the Shaltari you lot made me buy.
at salute we’ll (my self and my club) be running a drop Wings of Glory game
This might help you Lloyd

Thanks for the link @torros, that what I’m after 🙂
@lloyd Airfix coming into wargaming?… you mean returning to wargaming as I recall many historical wargamers used Airfix figures produced in the 60s/70s to get into wargaming. And i understand that they used to do rules.
The original Airfix magazine had lots of wargaming stuff in them , most of it written by people like Donald Featherstone, Charles Grant and Tony Bath etc to name but a few
@commodorerob – good to know, but I would say simpler kits with thicker gun barrels etc. aimed square at gamers is what they should do, what where the kits like in 60s/70s?
Air Fix used to do the battle dioramas in a box this was a molded hollow and very thin plastic base, included troops, vehicles, armors, artillery, and support weapons , basic buildings, tanks, all sundry of scene dressing items and sometimes even aircraft.
I had several sets Waterloo, ardennes (WW1), Battle of the Bulge, Monte Casino, Iwo Jima , and I am thinking Berlin (all WW2) , Viet Nam (1960’s- 1970’s ) all in 1/72nd scale
Okay they did not usually include rules- and it was meant to be a build, paint and set up a display scene- but you could use any Skirmish – platoon – Company size war game rules with it .
The bases were awesome with mountains, trenches, and all sundries of battlefield features these bases were around 12-18″ x 18-24″.
Having rules was rare in these sets although Warren picked up a Waterloo set box ( this was a huge set and originally included paint, glue, and brushes) that he got in a car boot / Church sale/ charity shop and opened the box in a Week Ender- That one even had the rules with it ( these were really basic ) .
I both love you guys and hate you.
You have got me back into war gaming which I Love .
You got me to play something other than WH40K. which I am eternally grateful for.
As when I found you guys and I was thinking of getting back into the hobby it was straight to a Games Work Shop local store . I even had a demo booked in this store- I got lucky that at work I had an emergency job came up so I missed that demo as I was planing to take and spend £300 which is not much in a GW store.
Also That has got me back into building models. My new collection of WW1 tanks, WW1,2 ships and planes look awesome painted up as Star Wars clone / Republic white with red trim and markings.
what I hate is you give me shiny syndrome- making me spend way too much money on gaming.
Currently you have made me fall in love with Dust Tactics. I have built 2 decent sized armies, got the starter set, map pack ( for around £200 ) .
My Axis army is getting the same Star Wars clone colour scheme- they look AWESOME !!!
I just wish I still had my generation one ZOIDS collection they again would look great in that Clone paint scheme and as of design they would fit in with; and look awesome as part of my AXIS army. 2-4 Spider Zoids would make an awesome platoon / lance for me. Throw in some Z-Knights as huge Titan like Walker / Wanzer Mechs.
It is amazing and I love how it is clear that you guys love gaming, and how passionate you are over .
I also ‘hate’ you guys for this as this love and passion is hyper infectious and I have caught this hard . I just gotta buy or have the stuff you cover.
The postie has just brought my Axis armored transport. Oh Yes !!! I can not wait to get it together and painted in those Clone colors- now my missed command dice rolls gets Re-Rolled – I
But I think that when my Allied Red Devils arrive they are going to be a traitor unit for my Axis Army.
Oh btw the allied allied forces I have are painted as original Dark Angels- Black with red trim and designs
*Skips the video to see the DzC winners* Oh well, congratulations to the winners 😀
Now I’m gonna enjoy the Weekender episode, always a great show ^_^
Discworld T-Shirt Sam?
Happy Saturday guys. See you at Salute.
Happy Saturday chaps, have a lovely weekend 🙂
The three card movement system is the best thing about Wings of War/Glory. It’s really tactical and really makes you plan out what you think your opponent will be doing and what you think your opponent thinks you’ll be doing. The stripped down version of it in X-Wing loses a lot of this.
Quite so Redben, practical proof of the ease of assimilation of this mechanic, was made perfectly clear to me the first time I introduced my 13 year old granddaughter to Wings of War, I didn’t think she would enjoy it so much, but after learning how to play in 5 mins, she lost the first game, then soundly thrashed me over the next 3 scenarios!! All played in less than an hour and a half too! The after action chat included her asking “can we play this again the next time I visit?” Worthy praise indeed for the game.
The reason that planes in Wings of War (now Wings of Glory) had a tighter turn one way, was because of the gyroscopic effect of the rotation direction of the air screw. This creates a nice little tactical option to attempt in dog fighting, trying to maintain the proverbial ‘high ground’ on your opponent! Another GREAT! Weekender guys, thank you.
I was wondering about that when they mentioned it. Makes obvious sense in retrospect. Thanks!
Hah! That sound you make when you open the box and see how many parts the model kit comes in.. I purchased an MG Jesta for my son because he loves giant robots and I was totally unprepared for what was inside the box (e.g. about 1000 pieces on 20 sprues) but you know what, we’re having fun building it together and it does look pretty darned sweet so far!
As for MDF.. did somebody say trains? TTCombat have a range although I wish it was all listed on their store because eBay links will expire fairly quickly:

Great vid again guys.
I love HobbyBoss stuff. They get a lot of stick in the modelling world for not being as millimeter accurate or quite as detailed as the Tamiya’s of this world, but the last one of theirs I bought was the 1/32 spitfire, which was £35, the Tamiya 1/32 Spitfire is an incredible feat of plastic engineering, but it is also £120, for us mere mortals with only average skills, the hobbyboss is a great option. I’ve always found their kits easy to make.
The live blogging is, by the way, probably the most innovative feature you have added to this site. Really useful and really enjoyable.
“I’ve always found their kits easy to make” – that’s what I want to here 😉
Do you have any of the demo/exibition games fotage to show, would love to se some more DzC videos, action reports an such. You guys make great, professional work! I´m staying as a backstage member on this site, best one out there!
Hobby lab for making train tracks!? This is exactly what I need. Release it, release it now.
Here you go: http://www.beastsofwar.com/backstage/hobby-lab-making-train-track/
Nice episode.
Wings of Glory looks like fun. Does anyone know if the WW2 version is as good?
Tamiya make some very nice 1:48 stuff that would add some interest to any DUST table – check out the Flakvierlings and Kettenkraftrad!

A few Airfix WW2 kits:

And run yer eyeballs over this Lloyd:

Great links I see a Hobby Boss 1/48 KV-2 Tank at a great price in there.
Lloyd check out a company called die waffenkammer.there in Canada and they make WW2 resin 1/56th scale vehicles.they do make the kv2,and they also make a scale german steam locomotive.also i thinck company b also makes some railroad stuff.
Looks good, but I’m after 1/48 at the moment they seem to be only 1/56.
Kitech has a huge selection of tank kits in 1/48. Good price too.
Wings of Glory looks great, I prefer simplistic stuff due to my poor memorization skills (believe me my memory IS *that* bad!) so little wargames like that are great for me on the gaming side of things.
I’ve backed Wings of Glory – just the little planes so far. I’d been meaning to get into it for years – ever since seeing Darrell and Andy doing a demo on this very site.
WWI movies, check out ‘The Blue Max’
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060177/
1966 film starring Geoge Peppard from the A-Team
also aces high with Malcolm McDowell.
Are wings of Glory 1/144th?
Hi Guys!
Thanks for featuring our Elevated Subway Car and tracks!
The kickstarter is over but you can get a look at it here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1141913215/impudent-mortals-warehouse-district.
Once we are finished getting everyone their rewards all the items will go to our website (probably about 5 – 6 months).
Walt
Excellent, love the look of your Elevated Subway Car and tracks.
Enjoyed the video gents. 2 minutes from box to playing, bang on the money with that comment!
Fast and furious game, love it! Just thought I’d post to say that the “Rookie” pledge level is really good value, $49 + $15 p&p (inc duty) for the rules and 4 fighters, (no bombers) Had a quick look at prices and 4 planes and the rules come in at £60. (so $100 or so?)
@torros, the WW1 Wings of Glory are 1/144 WW2 are 1/200 (I think 🙂 )
This question is for Lloyd…when do you want my 1/48 KV2 now through the post or in May in person ?? because i have moved over 1/56 and no longer need my KV so i might as well donate to your hobby and save you the money on it ,hell i bought john a tank and have something lined up for Warren so if you want it buddy its yours.
That’s a really nice offer, hopefully I’ll have a KV2 by may – the guys on here have linked to a few places to get them. Have you painted yours? I’d love to see a photo.
Talking about scale models for tanks, I recently saw a painting tutorial on the web that mentioned Rubicon Models.
They make 1/56th scale (28mm) plastic kits for use with miniature war gaming.
Thought you might want to check them out.
One more company joining the fray.
http://www.rubiconmodels.com/
@nuclearmantc99m the Tank i got John was the Rubicon Sherman and have been asking John if BOW would cover them as they are a pretty awesome set of kits for the money but with them been in bed with Warlord John doubted they could cover them with out the possibility of upsetting Warlord so i don’t think we will be seeing been in a unboxing video anytime soon
I started out playing Napoleonics using Airfix 1:72 soft plastic sets.I had hundreds of the little buggers!
If you want to drop in at Salute on a brand new company displaying its first product come to GF16, next door to Oshiro games demo.
The Ministry of Gentlemanly Warfare will be running participation games of Daisho – skirmish warfare in mythical Nippon.
I built a 1/48 scale t34 76 for bolt action. it was pretty easy to build and pretty nice. There is a lot of bits especially for the interior that as a wargamer you can skip. I also built a Tamiya 1/48 crusader III it was a little easier to build than the hobby boss one and had less interior parts.
Great show again, keep up the good work. Those Adobe buildings would look god in Wild West Exodus as Mexican style dwellings.
Mentioned in a weekender my life is complete haha, happy saturday everyone (even though most of it has gone now 🙁 )
Dam I didn’t win a dropzone starter…time to order one.
@lloyd I have been thinking a little more about the hobby boss and Tamiya 1/48 scale kits that I built for bolt action. The Tamiya one was closer to a wargaming model than the hobbyboss one. It had little to no internal details and few external components, also the base plate was metal so it was a lot more solid. The hobby boss one while a fantastic kit for the money was more a modeler’s kits. It had lots of internal parts (which you can skip with a bit of thought) and the external parts came in a larger number of pieces. The biggest disadvantage to both and the reason I have replaced them with 1/56 scale plastic or resin kits is that the tracks on both come in lots of small pieces, are fiddly to assemble and didn’t stand up too well to table top abuse. If you can reinforce that tracks without it being noticeable it will work out fine.
Ooft that’s a nice surprise after a long day at work – perhaps because I got into my Jammies before watching the weekender? In any event I can confirm a jammie dance occured!
Bloody hell! I won! Jammy dancing my buns off! Made my weekend guys!
Also saved me a bit of money as I was so going to get a two player starter set after the Bootcamp!
as usual a great show guys.
A thought for a post by one of the crew. Gaming to model ratios, including train modeling. There are a lot of opinions online and it would be neat to have a one shot reference. The little tid bit on 6mms during the DZC Boot camp showed there are a lot of options. Just a thought as I sit depressed in my jammies not doing the jammie dance. 🙂
Wow! That is a right proper flying base, nothing fiddly about that at all. 😀
Check out Parabellum hobby shop in Vyse Street Bham, UK they have lots of 1:48 kits, on their website they have Tamiya, Hobby Boss, Gasoline and a few obscure manufacturers at this scale.
Great show, love that you got a black adder reference in there
Another fascinating Weekender, but Lloyd almost had me yelling at the screen when he said that Wonderland Models only had one range of models suitable for Wargaming. I think you have been playing with 28mm figures too long and it is colouring your perspective.
Yes it is primarily a model shop but as well as Plastic Soldier Company 1/72 scale kits and figures, it also stocks 15mm kits from PSC as well as 1:100 scale kits from Zvesda which are ideal for use with 15mm figures for WW2 gaming. There are also shelves full of 1:72 scale miniatures from Hat, Caesar and others covering many historical periods from Ancients to WW2 and beyond which are great for Wargamers wanting to try some different periods cheaply.
Also next time you are over in Edinburgh at Wonderland take a wander round the corner into Bread Street and across the road you will find D6 to Hit, a friendly local game story with lots of Warlord, Mantic and other kit for you to enjoy.
John
“Also next time you are over in Edinburgh at Wonderland take a wander round the corner into Bread Street and across the road you will find D6 to Hit, a friendly local game story with lots of Warlord, Mantic and other kit for you to enjoy.”
Awesome – some one needs to do a Gaming City Guide for Edinburgh, one of my favorite places.
Great show again guys! Thanks
