Welcome everyone to a week all about Myth on Beasts of War. In the first of many videos coming this week Warren and Lloyd introduce Myth Week and give a little insight into what sort of boardgame Myth is and a look through what you would find in the game.

Been meaning to get this on the table for a while now but still stumbling through the rules. Was waiting for this to help. The rulebook is kinda crap.
You’ve just got to download the various FAQs (if you had the KS bundle there was a monochrome booklet with it at the back) and sit down and make up a scenario with a couple of heroes and try it out. This is how it went for me and my son one rainy saturday a couple of weeks ago, and the narrative thread we made up…
First go… a wanna be soldier and a novice accolyte were sitting at a bar (find tavern tile, set up player boards and get some cards sorted out) when the barmaid ran in shrieking “there’s something in the cellar”. (find basement tile, load it up with some grubbers [9-12?], learn how to use the cards through the player cycle, how to track threat and the darkness meter, how the darkness reacts without spawning at this stage, clear the board).
After clearing the cellar the slighly less wannabe heroes return upstairs to the bar to be rewarded by the landlord and to check out any items they picked up as treasure. as they trade with the landlord an older man walks up to them enquiring after his daughter. Find the quest chain card, pick up another couple of heroes (an archer and a brigand) and head outside, fighting through the town and forest path (a couple of smaller tiles practice) leading to the cemetary where some crawlers held the daughter near a lair that during the fight spawned several more crawlers and a couple of captains but fortunately not a big boss yet. The girl was rescued, a nearby trader sold some improved items and we called it that as a session.
We then sat down and went back over the rules, faqs etc realising lots of “ah – you when… we should have…” moments. next time round wa already smoother, but still some issues. But heck – that’s what this game is about. Just give it a try, keep notes of stuff you aren’t certain about, make up a sensible compromise and keep going. One or two things we had to resort to forums and search engines to find an answer.
It was fun even though we knew we weren’t playing it exactly right!
Warren there’s no need to be diplomatic. It’s perfectly fine to say that the rules (and the cards) that come in the box, are a bit shite.

Ok, this game looks too fun to miss out on, i mean hack and slash adventures are awesome, and the fact that you have to think things through and you have your buddies right there with you makes this game on my wishlist.
It looks fun, but I’m not sure if it’s something that I should invest in. I’ve gotten other adventure games before like Mice and Mystics, or Shadow Over Brimstone, and we lay it maybe once, but the turn out to be such long games we don’t play them for ages. I’m curious if the game play/set-up is fast enough to make this worth picking up?

The kickstarter edition looks amazing, too bad i missed it. The retail box is mostly an empty box unfortunately. 🙁

Looks good from tje video. But it would be good to know if that was a retail box or a KS box? Also not sure about the quest dead ends thing. Surely if I buy a game I shouldn’t have to buy an explanation set to finish it? But let’s see what the rest of the week brings may I’ve got the wrong end of the stick.

I remember the Myth kickstarter and I remember I had to choose, Myth or Shadows of Brimstone. I went Shadows of Brimstone but I am really keen to see how Myth plays.

reminds me of super dungeon explore, only with a card mechanic. Is all of the material they have available now or are there more expansions coming soon?

I didnt get into Kickstarter till after this was over and really upset I missed out on the Kickstarter. Will be watching this and hopefully get a copy of this SOON!!!
I have to admit that I can kind of forgive the gaffs with the rulebook and cards as that is being corrected. (Though it took Mercs a while to stop blaming everyone else and admit to it being their fault.) And I have no issues with quest chains that span multiple expansions.
It’s having a miniboss in the box that spawns creatures that are only in an expansion, that I don’t get…

How the heck did I miss this kick starter!!!!! I feel like the kid that slept through Christmas Day o woe is me.. Will have to wait for it. Looks like a really good game and very well thought out.
Maybe the rulebook isn’t that good on purpose?? Maybe its just a taster book to get you all involved and talking?? I haven’t read it so im only guessing.

After so many excuses made during the video I feel pretty much turned away from the game. I knew it had its fair share of problems and issues but given the competition this one has to face I guess I will raid dungeons elsewhere. I thought it interesting but I feel it didnt live up to expecations.
Its the Kickstarter counterpart of a buggy, unpolished and unfinished computergame.
@yoshi – the game as supplied has its flaws, but nothing fatal IMHO. It might not be for you, but I think it is a great and unique game. Hopefully someone you know might buy into it, so you can give it a try sometime.

Great start guys! Looks like you’re already impacting the McG team as I saw a quest chain document on their site showing how quests link and where they are found (base, expansion, DLC, etc.).
Love your enthusiasm towards this franchise. I happen to agree that there’s so much more than just what’s in the box (and I have the entire KS package). Can’t wait to see what else you have to say about Myth.

Nice to see a Myth week! Just played it for the first time last week 🙂 One question though: am I correct in seeing a pack of Spriggan sleeves in the prize bundles? I ordered them back in the KS, didn’t receive them, and then when my missing items arrived they sent me a pack of regular sleeves instead… Kind of sucks that apparently they didn’t make enough for the people who actually ordered them but they did make enough to give away as prizes…
So far I have opened a box and sat down to paint the mini’s so my daughters and I can play over Thanksgiving and Christmas breaks. I am so glad that you guys have put together this week and linked the video’s to my family and I enjoy the game more and enjoy our time creating our own stories in the realm of Myth. Thanks guys!!!!!!!!

This game looks AWESOME! One of my favorite games growing up was Warhammer Quest, and this game looks very similar!
Played a gam the other week, we had lots of fun. Our Partys warrior just couldn’t control him self and earned us a couple of threat penalties!!

I love this game so much. The manual is not too bad, but is organised atrociously making it near impossible to find what you are looking for during a game. My workaround is to have the PDF of the manual on my iPad and use the search function to find the right part. I also have the errata, 1.1 draft rules and the unofficial manual rewrite from the forums as backup. I’ve watched all the videos before I received the game as well which really helped to minimise the amount of looking up I have to do in the first place.

This game looks amazing. A good intermediary between playing a RPG and a board game. Doesn’t hurt that it has some awesome art direction!

oh no…I loved Hero Quest like most of us, I loved the first Myth PC game and I have a weakness for great games! Hmpf so three new games for me to get into….dropzone commander, Batman and now Myth! at least christmas is coming soon that will give my wallet a short break.

I must say I really like the art style and the models. It’s refreshing to see someone boldly making their own vision instead of cloning popular game aesthetics.
And the model quality looks really nice too. These are really meant to be painted.

I really wish I’d gotten in on this when it was on Kickstarter. The problem with KS has been the amount of really cool games on there, and trying not to go on a mad spending spree. I spent so much of the last year forcing myself not to spend money because we were moving and the new place is smaller, so less room for my junk as the other half calls it. So I didn’t get in on some of these games, and now Im kicking myself lol….

Love the way they packed this box to the limit – always a brill feeling opening choc-a-block box of cardboard & minis!
The “you choose” or “decide yourselves” idea behind how you play out the mechanics.
It’s nice to allow interpretation and not being forced to conform to strict mode of play & rule restrictions that I feel comes with getting older. When we were young, foot loose and fancy free we always changed what we didn’t think fitted and no-one had any problems with it… the innocence of youth!

Any got any comments about age appropriateness? The look and concept seems pretty family friendly but complexity has put me off so far…..unless its possible for grown ups (well me anyway) to run the darkness and most rule mechanics and get my daughter to just say what she wants to do. Need a step up from “Dungeon” which is great in its own way, but the “walk in room and roll dice to see whether I win or lose” mechanic gets old for us big people.

I am very happy to see this game getting air time. Yes the original rulebook was crap, but there are a lot of resources out now to help learn the game. And it really is something unique and great fun. I don’t have the time these days to play D&D like I did when I was a teenager, but this game does scratch a similar itch in that it lets you role play and tell a story over a series of adventures.

Binge watching Myth week. Love the artwork and the starter set is massive! I’ve just assembled my Shadows of Brimstone KS (wave 1). There are a lot of comparisons between the two games at first glance but I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the videos and discover the USP’s of Myth.

I really do get the feeling of Kickstarter dripping off this one; they made too many options and couldn’t put them into one box, and customers have now have to shell out more money for an expansion in order to play them.
It looks great, but the missing missions has put me right off the game, even from wanting to win it, so don’t put my name down for the prize draw.
I don’t like how missions that are mentioned in the game, are not in the box, meaning I’d have to buy an expansion to play it. That’s very disappointing.
Everything that’s mentioned in the game should be in the box, and we shouldn’t have to expect to find a video to tell us why, nod like a bunch of saps and say ‘Oh I see, because of KS, it’s going to be in an expansion. Right, I’ll buy that too then.’ I’d ask ‘Will the expansion contain all that’s mentioned in the expansion, or will I need to buy another expansion for that as well?’.
The excuse of, and I paraphrase from Warren in the video here: “due to the nature of KS, we didn’t put the missions in the box, even though we mention you being able to play them” is a poor one. If they couldn’t put it in the box, then they shouldn’t mention it in the box. When I buy something I expect it to be complete, I don’t want bits missing for whatever reason there might be for it. They shouldn’t allude to something you can’t actually use, causing you to end up spending hours and hours looking for something it’s not there. It doesn’t create a happy customer.
It puts me in mind of GW’s old kits that were one or two models short of a full unit or collection of weapons; meaning you’d have to buy another whole box of models just to get the missing bits/models to complete the unit. I’m quite sure that in GW’s case that was their sales tactic. But in Megacon’s case, it seems more likely that they ballsed it up and customers are expected to swallow their “due to KS” excuses and buy the expansion regardless.
If the KS opened up SOOOO many options to put into the game, then they should’ve sorted it out so that they didn’t mention anything that can’t be played with the main game alone.
This sort of thing really p****s me off, as you can probably tell, lol, and I’m glad I didn’t go for this KS.
I think I’ll wait until I hear that Megacon Games has sorted out the game before I buy it. I don’t want to have to buy missing parts in order to play a full game. There’s no excuse for that.
