At least @warzan didn’t start with “I have a cunning plan” XD
“Getting in touch”. Maybe specify how. Private message here? Email? Run around the store screaming “pick me”? Carrier pigeon? V2? Or maybe a form with something like “I volunteer for” and then check-boxes?
I’d say leave a comment here stating your interest and we’ll get back to you. There may be more details at some point soon.
Please, do not send pigeons as I keep eating them. They’re very crunchy.
African swallow then? With coconuts? (Leaving comment here stating interest etc)
Aw now you’re sending them with flavouring!
Albatross Flavour, but does need wafers!
But is the bird dead or just resting?
Typical hobbitsies.
Got a group of very experienced players at my home club, (including Kevin) with quite a lot of rules experience including writing, I’m sure will be happy to have a look at converting it to two player , though we have more experience the other way round converting 2 player to 4+ games.
Who is Kevin?
That’s ‘THE KEVIN!’
chap who still owes me a date 😉
I’ll remind him! should be worth seeing the look on his face!
And I still have no idea who your talking about
he’s a fruit bat and loves fruit pastilles
I thought that was Eric the fruit bat.
Yes, all my pets are called Eric.
that’s old age son, it causes the memory to go. 😉
Sorry, I got the wrong thread – I was looking for the Monty Python reference thread.
no you weren’t
Eric was half a Bee
More like a Klingon
Happy Christmas to you and your team, please remember that Christmas is not the time to eat the KIDS, rather it is the time to fatten them up.
Megagames were the reason I had so much fun playing 40k when I was a kid. Got to just turn up to GW, they stuck you with one side or the other and just let you have a bunch of fun playing with your little bit of a larger force.
Had so many cool moments with my very heavily painted Black Templars.
The big diorama/showcase is also very cool – it’s why I like going back to Warhammer World when they change up the museum 🙂
Something that would also be a good idea is making a simple “getting started with miniatures” pamphlet where you can just provide simple basic information like clippers, glue, primers etc. Make sure you give this along with children, parents and others that are new to the hobby. Also make it easy for them to see and find that pamphlet in your visitors centre.
I so wish I was local and could come over and join the campaign. ? Would be awesome to see some of it at least.
That leaflet could also contain a prominent link to a page on the site with a series of hobby videos aimed at new starters.
But also, the leaflet says that there’s a link to the site so that people (kids / parents, etc.) can find out more in an easily accessible way.
Or one of those QR code thingies. Starting to understand this modern technology thing now
please send in your suggestions on a postcard or the back of a stuck down envelope
Do we need to include milk bottle tops?
yes we’re keeping tabs on the totaliser
I’m looking forward to the next vlog where they make the advent decoration with wire coat hangers and tinsel
Given I work 12 to 14hrs on a normal work day not including the commute, I have limited time to help. However, as far as beginners, I wanted to state. How about a Beginners section or Hobby Tips section. A long time ago when the hobby was younger Tamiya, Testors, Vallejo and others had free hobby guide brochures. I believe an online version would be very helpful.
This consisted of a how to get started with tools section. A 20 tips section and where to go next section. It seems like an online version would easy to do. The Tools section could be a 10min video going through the various tools. Start with the nips and how to cut figures from sprues. How to select a brush and primer etc. In the 20 tips section, go through creating a figure holder, how to water down paint, how to do basic basing etc. and link videos along the way. The Where to Go Next section could link to more advanced topics.
I still have some of the original pamphlets. I believe the simply stopped making/distributing them because of costs. The only good remaining guide I see today is the Reaper Learn to Paint Kits. A general one for the hobby is missing. IMHO you can make the search box smaller and create a beginners tab at the top of the website.
Just my 32bits.
This might sound a bit counter-intuitive, but there’s also no need to reinvent the wheel. I’m sure GW have some very good painting videos with Duncan Rhodes that you could link to as well. You don’t have to create all the content yourselves if there are gaps that are filled perfectly well by other people.
12-14 hours seems a bit serious
Who are Cut Games? The blokes on the front of the Vigilus book?
Cult of Games is the name for our club here at BoW/OTT
Ooooh! I never thought I’d hear myself say this, “I want to join a/the cult!”
But I guess there’s no fear of that, Kansas is a bit far for once a week travel for game night!
You just carry on my wayward son.
Just hope on a whirlwind, Coleraine ,Oz samething!
I’m still getting over the kid with scissors bit, but wonder it thats if his mum has banned him from sharp Knives.Though still shudder at trying to remove stuff from sprues with the veggie knife when a kid.
It is a thought above though about what are modern kid allowed to use?
Not to mention polystyrene Glue…..remember Adrian Mole.
Though for many of older guys here, their 1st introduction to minis where metal knives are a must.
“I have little kiddies who come first”
But what about all us big kiddies? *sniff* ?
?
lol
You should start the kids off with obtaining and maintaining good hobby practices by only letting them have metal figures ?
definately somthing on metal is a must
That all sounds so awesome, I do wish I was closer as I’d definitely get over to you. I’m so impeessed with everything you’ve been doing recently, keep up the good work!! 😀
On the subject of finding stuff. I have been a backstage r for a while and I tried to find the hobby vid you did with Lloyd making hedges from coconut mats. I could not find it so went to utube where I did. Is this the kind of thing you were on about. I knew what I wanted but no matter how I searched I could not find it on OTT.
yep that’s a definate symptom of the issue!
Ok to be sort of serious fora second but do you think that parents would want their kids visting the main OTT with all the slightly bad language and jokes and innuendo etc that’s included in a lot of the content
Maybe a junior OTT website that has basic hobby videos and how to play videos?
Would it be an idea to write a simplified version of Kill Team (which the kids could keep) or Age of Sigmar that would have a low model count and give the children the sense of achievement of completing an army. It would also mean there is lesser pressure on parents of being able to afford all the models you need for 40k or AoS especially if some of the kids drop out which there will be a percentage that do before £100’s have been spent
I wrote this before finishing the video so all this might have been mentioned already
I’m talking about kids in their mid to late teens. 🙂
Ah ok. Thought you were thinking of younger than that
nah I’m just getting really old lol
Aside from what we catch in the edit, there is far worse even on television than what the guys spout on a weekly basis.
Another question
Have all the staff members got their Access NI checks done as you will probably need them if children are in the centre
working on what’s needed there
Buggered up a lot of participation games at shows at one point, kid not allowed unless accompanied by responsible adult!
Where the hell are you going to find one of those at a game show.
Means the Tea lady is going to be very bust playing games and no tea!
Looking like its going to be a great event!! I’m really gutted not to be able to get to it thanks to work…. Same as the exhibition, would have loved to make that too, but again working early on Saturday so not sure I could get up in time!!
@warzan I dont mind helping any of the youngsters when I’m up at the club with anything they need! Will most likely be up most Saturdays 🙂
the friday exhibition runs from 10-10 so you could pop down if you have the time.
Thank you, I’ll assess the train times back home in the evening! Have to leave home at 5.30am on Saturday morning for work boooooooooo!
leave at a quarter past the hour every hour and take 90mins ish to reach Belfast
This is so right…. it took me fecking ages to find out what zenithal priming is….kept hearing people mention it but nobody seemed to do an idiots guide on it that i could find until sorastro did it in a star wars tutorial.
Great idea for beginners. The flames of war and games workshop have excellent guides on how to get started. I still use my citadel paint and terrain guides.
Warlord guides are also good starting points.
Willing to help to make the site better. Let me k ow how I can assist
The four stages of competence :
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_stages_of_competence
Having some kind of ‘skill level’ indicator for tutorials will help a lot as you can then start the hunt for more info. I think Revell do something like that for their plastic kits (the ‘easy build’ vs expert level).
Part of the problem (in any hobby to be honest) is that there is often too much entry level and too much ‘expert’ level content with practically nothing in between. As a result the ones that sort of know what they’re doing don’t get the help to achieve ‘expert’ level competence.
With regards to the content I do agree with you @warzan it is hard to find at times, for a video. But what I am thinking of is how about:
Beginners guide How to make a space marine
Beginners guide How to paint your space marine
Beginners guide How to base you space marine
Beginners guide to How to Air Brush.
These video could tie in to the welcome centre you have now.
These would be headed for 12 to 15 year olds but I feel they would appeal to an older audience as well
How about if you have two games nights similar to Games Workshop. One for Advanced gamers, you could run a campaign on that night to start with. And beginners games night as well, with a tailored campaign. I worked for games workshop between 1995 and 1997 same principles still apply today. When I was a staff member at GW I managed the shop for 6 months with part time people as well. On our Sunday beginners games we hand a hand full of beginners in the shop. I thought this was not enough, so out of my own time I traveled around my town and put on mini wargames with the local scout groups and even held a painting competition, During the competition I helped some scouts get started. The following Sunday and this continued until I left in 1997, I had 20 to 30 beginners every Sunday to the beginners games. The beginners played 40k and painted there models with the help of me and the part time people. Travelling around to the different Scout groups increased everyones awareness of the shop and many beginners went on to the advanced gaming nights we held on Thursdays. I still see most of them today and they tell me how GW got them in to gaming and they have not looked back.
the problem with that is there is a limited time for openings unlike GW. If you take away a third of the time it isolates a lot of people who can maybe only attend that day.
Having things like this on during the week would probably make a lot of people think if it was worth making the trip. I think you would get more people on Saturdays.
but then where do the gamers go who know how to play if you’re taking the only full open day off them to teach new starts?
Just seems a strange day for it. But the schools are off so I guess the day doesn’t matter
there are only 3 days the gaming area is open, taking away one of those days, weekend or weekday severely impacts regardless of when it is. That’s why I would be against having a dedicated day for beginners
I think I got confused on days etc. I was trying in an inept way that the exhibition would be better on a Saturday as you would likely get more people showing up during the day rather than after work etc
I would agree with not having dedicated beginners day
ah right, I was replying to @hawker2000‘s suggestion about beginner days, while great in theory there are only a limited amount of hours available.
@warzan I think it is great that potential changes here will help those new to the hobby rather than us old timers (can I call myself an old timer now?). I am helping out at my son’s school as they have started up 40K Club on a Wednesday’s that also once a month goes to the local GW store, I have no problem donating kill teams and terrain, dice, brushes etc because the easier the route into the hobby for the kids the more likely the gaming community grows in the future… I am sure at some point my boys will want to play with someone other than me 😀
Love to help in the future, very positive vibe around everything you and the team are doing at the moment. Merry Christmas everyone.
Martin
I’d be happy to take a look at converting Vigilus Laid Waste to two players.
I was one of those kids. My biggest issue was money and if it wasn’t for the local GW having things like clippers and glue free to use in store (within reason) was incredibly useful. One or two plastic glue’s and some clippers at a small table could really make a big difference.
A rattle can every so often just to get a squad undercoated for them (can be done in batches so as not to waste paint) can be priceless to a youngster. The biggest thing though is just sitting with other hobbyists and watching what they do. How do they hold the sprue, how do they hold the clippers, how do they collect all the pieces together ect. We just take it for granted but it’s quiet daunting.
Things like (for me) if you clip out multiple components put them in numerical order from left to right so you don’t get mixed up isn’t something I read but something I saw the local guys doing and copied.
Interesting to see the visitor centre kicking off in a big way, the first issue of the recent 40k conquest magazine had a good guide on clipping miniatures off sprues and painting them to 3 colours.
The campaign sounds very well thought out, is there any thought to maybe putting some kill team missions in, maybe with more players?
Vigilus Laid Waste? So the story details the cleaning up the trash after the BoW Christmas Party? Proper Waste Management is key to a campaign.
we considered recycling but found it made more sense to bulldoze everything into the river
Your going to run out of river, or it will end up like the River Ankh in Disc world, old bits of terrain will take days to sink into the ooze or just slowly dissolve.
I spent years using a stanley knife to cut minis of sprues. I only changed to clippers recently when I near cut my finger off.
off to see the wizard the wonderful wizard off warzan. ?
you can start with the year the videos were made guys for back stories issue’s.
I was wondering how you were advertising this – not just this event but the whole store and club / visitors’ centre. I’d kind of assumed that anyone already in the hobby would know about you and you’d be trying to find people who’d had almost no gaming exposure, but it sounds like there are hobbyests in your area who aren’t really plugged in to a community.
The even pack sounds great, and if you do something similar for a series of events you could build up a library which other clubs could use for themselves.
I was thinking that you might combine the event pack with a ‘getting ready’ pack. This could be a bit like a slow grow league or mini ‘armies on parade’ type event. e.g. You advertise the event say 2 months in advance, and say that you’ll have four fortnightly milestone club meetups leading up to it. You can link to a few videos on how to get started and then at each milestone event people can come in to show off what they’ve been working on and/or ask for help with anything they’ve been struggling with.
That way, 8 weeks later they’re ready to take part in the main event and they’ve both developed their hobby skills along the way and assembled / painted more models.
Very exciting times!
Happy Christmas!
escalation leagues are a great way to do it. Norn Iron is a bit random, the facilities have been here for years for people to use but GW players apparently need to be tempted in with cake and hugs.
One can tempt anyone with free cake … not too sure about those hugs though 😉
I would say in NI wargaming is pretty fragmented. There are plenty of gamers I know of who never go to clubs and do all there gaming at home and don’t want to know about clubs and could be bothered with online forums etc
true, but these ones have started coming down now, whereas before they couldn’t be arsed. I assume there is some kind of spoon fed GW analogy to be made here, but I’m too lazy to bother
Great to see what you guys are up to, looking forward to hearing how the campaign evening goes. It would be very interesting seeing the open day as a video, maybe focussing on each if the displays and a fixed cam (speeded up) showing people coming and visiting.
Getting things categorized and cross-refrerenced just speaks to my librarian heart <3
And how I wished I could have been there for that mega game. That sounds like sooo much fun!
So you’re volunteering? 😉
I think I’m already in, as I’m on the curator team 😀
Edit: but just in case…yes, definitely volunteering :p
@warzan well I have a few ideas for helping beginners so well on board for adding to the workload of the Curation team 😀
Honest answer – the BoW/OTT website has never been easy to navigate so anyone coming from the outside with little knowledge is always going to struggle. Even more so if you don’t know what you are looking for.
The OTT upgrade made things better – primarily the search engine, but there are still issues. I get it that the design philosophy was about connecting people to games through the library, tagging projects etc.. That makes sense, but there are other ways into this.
The primary problem for me is that once something drops off the main page it is as good as lost. All the effort since the summer that has gone into great articles around game design, philosophy, rpgs etc.. is a bit wasted if you can’t find them again. And it is not always possible to read everything straight away.
The same goes for the hobbying side. There is ton’s of stuff in old videos and John’s blogs – a purely from a financial side you have invested £10,000s if not more into this, but it is almost inaccessible unless you know where it is. The only way I can get at what I need is by remembering it was there, finding it which can take time and book marking it.
The other issue is that the front page is just overloaded with stuff and colour and flashing things. On a small screen it can be more than 50% is covered by adverts and things that are distracting. I get why its necessary to keep the lights on, no issue, but that cleaner look of OTT hasn’t really materialised.
For a newcomer hitting the site there is a lot going on. The UI isn’t intuitive so if you genuinely want to be a portal into the hobby as much as everything else you’ll have to rethink things.
On 40k/2-player entry campaigns. This is something I have been looking for, some sort of toolbox/guide for bringing new people into games. My wife has been kind enough to indulge in 40k and 2019 is when we are going to get into it properly.
The problem is it is very hard to create a path beyond just a few introduction games like you have in the GW starter packs. That only takes you so far and assumes players have a lot of time and energy to go all the way. Most people don’t have that so having a template of how to do this beyond just an intro guide would be most useful. The basics go building up armies, scaling up games, adding in rules etc.. are pretty universal across all games.
Also… a merry Christmas to the whole BoW gang and everyone here. Thanks for a another great year of gaming and hobby. Have a particularly pleasant time of quiet sitting down
Love this idea, supporting bringing new players (young & old) is a fantastic idea, looking forward to hearing lots more of your plans.
A great Vlog and I’m looking forward to see the event pack. The layouted and printed sheets you showed us looks amazing. I’m a sucker for nicely designed hobby content.
that is a good point, for my self i base coated many armies by hands until i learned better way. my suggestion is on beasts of war/OTT front page always as soon as any one comes in they can see a big tab that says beginner guide start here for hobby or gaming, and make a simple video that drops immediately the basics that everyone should know plus some useful links.
i would love to take a crack at this system to turn it into a two player system.
Hi…
What happened on the day???…
@avernos is pretty clever, isnt he!? That campaign day sounds lots of fun. (And yeah, I’m pretty behind on my content devouring.)
Warzan, think you hit the nail on the head. Unknown unknowns are a curse to all! You’re content archive is epic but finding relevant content can be a pain in the nuts if you’d don’t know where to start, and that’s the same for any data on any website.
Your project logs are great. How about one that starts with say a “starter set” for a game and goes right back to basics with clipping, assembly, pruning base coating washing etc but with a presumption of no previous knowledge?
That or tagging items for beginner, intermediate, advanced? Guides based on colour might be handy (how do I achieve the look I’m after)
All just ideas!
