Happy Sunday Brothers and Sisters of CoG!
It’s the XLBS Show.
Grab your favorite drink, something to snak on, and hold on tight, this could be a wild ride!
As to the question of the day,
What I’ve been doing this week…….breaking in a Brand New 3D Printer. I took the advice of the OTT 3D Print Team and bought an AnyCubic Mega S. Pretty sweet right out of the box. I’ve done a few test prints and a couple of add on parts for re routing the part cooling fan’s airflow.
Next up, to pick some Star Wars: Legion terrain items to print up.
As to the Offical Fez for dress code………..just let me know where to order from!
I have the mega a for terrain and stuff it’s amazing 🙂 I use the photon for minis 🙂
I just received notice of a sale on the Photon Resin 3D Printer.
https://www.beastsofwar.com/forums/topic/anycubic-3d-printer-on-sale/
I wasn’t planning on buying the Photon so soon. But I may be off to do some shopping! ??
I’ve watched this twice now and every time @warzan starts cutting that resin block with clippers I cringe as it looks like he’s about to take chunks out of his hand. ?
Happy Sunday!!
I’ve started a new job so I’ve had my hobby time chewed up recently. But my recent project has been working on converting Orlock figures into Savlar Chem Dogs to use in the new Necromunda campaign at Crossroad Games https://www.facebook.com/CrossroadGames/
I con-fez, I am fez-tering with envy right now. The desire, nay NEED, for spiffy COG head wear has in-fez-ted my mind.
Only one answer :

happy sunday! Hail the CoG!
Half awake, but coffee is ready only missing my Fez.
Yes it was Napoleon with the wallpaper in the drawing room. Despite sounding like a really bad game of Cluedo they think he was poisoned but nobody I think can prove it and was probably done unknowingly
There’s still life in the old grey matter yet
Happy Sunday. Due to a new job, I’m travelling 60% of the time with 60+ hours of work per week. So my hobby time is scarce these days. But in trying to get my Aeronautica Imperialis stuff to build and painted and finish building my Adeptus Titanicus. I might also build and prime that latest two Blackstone Fortress expansions. My friends already joke I’m piling just up for retirement. They might be right there ??
For the resin I’d be tempted to brush the first couple of layers on and let it set before pouring the rest
Who’s idea was it to add the extra penis to the ankh?
…. .- .–. .–. -.– / … ..- -. -.. .- -.– -.-.–
You do realise there is actually a ‘Fez code’?(And I’m not talking about the de-facto fez wearing conventions you’ve murdered in this episode)
They make a great headphone stand I worked that out
I think I’ve just worked out who may have nicked the gold bog from Blenheim!
Those Fez’s are off the chain. Everyone should own one.
@avernos nice work on the Greeks. I’ve been watching quite a few vids on you tube about painting with inks and I think it’s the way forward for speed painting
Thanks. Thinking of ordering the liquitex inks to see how they behave
I bought the burnt umber liquitex ink for the 3mm stuff and it’s great. Lovely coverage
Nice paint jobs on the 15mm Joan of Arc figures though some of the sculpts are very underwhelming for 15mm
Probably because they’re mass produced plastics, they don’t have the freedom of metal the king of materials
Amen Brother
Thanks! Yes, the sculpt quality varies greatly on the JoA range. That’s quite understandable given how much stuff there is, and like Gerry wrote, they are limited by what can be done with the material. At the same I’m very positively surprised how much detail they can pull from the board game plastic on the character models.
Great show guys.
Black Combat Fez with a tassel and a weird skull on the front. Where have I seen that before…. For those wondering those guys generally seem to have worn the Tassel behind the head. (Joking just making some inisde historical jokes not accusations I really like the Fez’s) 🙂
If I’m being 100% honest the more I hear “Cult of Games” the less I like it. It’s not about change but “Cult” just has a really bad ring to it.
@avernos is right Napoleon did think that he even had it in his will that if he died he was murdered by the British.
“I die prematurely, assassinated by the English oligarchy and its assassin. The English nation will not be slow in avenging me.”
Ah yes Nikolas will always give you good Beige advice, apparently the chap dances a mean Lindy as well 🙂 Very nice minis.
@warzan you’re talking about the Petits Chiffres right? That was cracked in two days of being intercepted. The British (I believe his name was Scovell but not 100% sure) made very good use of it in the Peninsular War so I’m not sure where you’re book is getting it’s info from. Vitoria happened because the British Cracked the French codes that’s part of the reason why they managed to catch them so unprepared and capture the entire French baggage Train.
If there is any old codes from history we can’t crack it’s because we just don’t have the encoded messages themselves. We cracked Enigma with those enormous “Computers” and today we can crack most pen and paper cypher with a Mobile Phone.
GW bases are 5mm tall my bases that Warren is using are 3mm tall. Would you like me to add a 5mm ring to the top of them so you can pour Resin straight onto the base? A 5mm ring would be best since you’re going to be putting Wallpaper on them. I can’t make the bases any thinner without removing the coin inserts.
I have to agree with @elessar2590 about the “CULT of games” the more it’s used the less I actually like it. and it is the use of CULT that is my problem. I would much prefer “Crew of gamers” or “CROWD of gamers” and then the logo can still be used.
It’s all just fun guys one of the inspirations is here 🙂
https://youtu.be/ZCOSPtyZAPA
Reclaim the word for a bit of good guys 🙂
I still call myself a backstager. Anything with cult has far too many negative connotations right now to make it acceptable without someone taking offense.
With you on that one. I still refer to it as backstage(rs) – not so bothered about any still extant negative connotations for cult(ist) it just sounds kinda naff to me in comparison buuuuuut…. if folk are enjoying it and having fun with the alt title, then what harm in it. For me though – I’m still BeastsOfWar (balls to YouTube ><) and backstage. Each to there own 🙂
OTTer!
lol 🙂
Those UV resin basing experiments were really interesting. I’ve never seen UV resin used before like that. In fact I didn’t even know you could buy it in dropper bottles.
Exciting and new product I think green stuff world only released it a couple of months ago.
Speaking of New Saga Updates I did some work on Age of Plasma.
Every Faction has a Battle Board (and some sub factions have them as well) except the Sisters of Battle and Deathwatch. I’ll get to them in 2-3 weeks after Uni and Work settle down.
The latest update added Inquisitors which can be built over 40+ different ways and are a mercenary Warlord Replacement for any of your Imperial Factions. They have different Ordos, Wargear and Political Beliefs which are all customisable to suit your Inquisitor. It also added Arco Flagellants, Crusaders, Death Cult Assassins, Priests, Officio Assassinorum Assassins and Psyker Squads.

Bill & Ben in a bath, Bill goes “flub-a-lub-a-lub-a-lub”. Ben replies, “Did you fart again you dirty bastard!?”
???
The UV resin seems a very expensive way of doing clear resin bases with price of it and how much you’ll use. If you want a sewer look to the bottom of the bases would it work better with a thin layer of Daz or sculpey and one of those green world rollers?
I’d still look at pouring resin or layers of gloss varnish for doing a lot of stuff. I’d still maybe try the UV stuff as the big advantage of the UV stuff is the control you should be get from being able to cure it quickly.
@robert Yeah. You can get nice effects with green and brown washes between layers
Indeed. I do like the look of the toxic sludge and wonder how easy it is to tint this UV resin as it would be a great way to add realistic slime and blood on models. Also small waterfall effects. Looks useful for lots of things but outside my hobby budget for using it to base an army.
Happy Sunday
Nice looking into these Resin, I´ll give it a try.
Happy Sunday all.I’ll be watching later so just popping by with a salutation.
Hope the OTT crew don’t mind me sharing this – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vlBVVSkjAU
It is how Green Stuff World use their own product! Not as fun as learning for yourself but plenty of tips and ideas to be got from it.
Happy Sunday! Not even 10 minutes in and its getting weird.
Gonna be a good one.
Happy sunday folks
“insert CoG handshake here”
Happy Sunday!
Getting the basing wallpaper to the OTT store will be great. Here in the Nordics people generally have good enough taste for home decoration meaning that type of horrible wallpaper is impossible to come by from local stores. Although I’m wondering how to explain to the missus an order of tiny sheets of wallpaper and a fez from Northern Ireland. ?
Great show. More of a hobby night vibe. Some very cool experimentation.
Like the Spartans Gerry @avernos looking really good ?
And the Fed’s are da bomb!!
cheers fella
Fez’s not Fed’s. Now that’s a freudian slip that could come back an haunt me.
Typo error mr. NSA man crawling game sites for terrorists
Cracking episode chaps, loved the experiments,i have a mad scientist type at my flgc who will be very interested in the techniques and materials used. The fez’s look great by the way.I haven’t hobbied in any way for a good while,i’m still looking into storage for ” failed / unplayed ” games and projects,so i’m immensely jealous of the progress @avernos has made with his ” greeks for many systems “.I do currently have a big box of skellies staring at me,so ( hopefully ) some more might get built for Age of Fantasy ( with a little magic )…
How is that clear UV resin any different than the one sold for making costume jewelry? You can find jewelry resin far cheaper than green stuff. Just checking websites, $0.24/ml for green stuff vs $0.12/ml for the jeweler resin and down to $0.09/ml if you purchase larger volumes. Also, various companies make coloring pastes for jewelry to make whatever set of colors you want. My brother is huge into building train layouts and have seen him make rivers with the jewelry resins for years and he was even featured in Model Railroad Magazine in a water effects edition many years ago.
As far as Napoleon’s Cypher or “Great Paris Cipher” this article written by historians is a great read
Napoleon’s Guide to Improperly Using Cryptography
http://www.wondersandmarvels.com/2014/11/napoleons-guide-to-improperly-using-cryptography.html
Warren.. if you use thin plastic bases like the Renedra ones to PVA the wallpaper to first, these will not only be thin enough not to effect height like the GW ones, but they will be a solid platform for everything to adhere to
The fez thing is a great success. You truly look like Cults now.
What?
I wear a Fez now, Fez’s are cool.
FEZ-tastic ! =3
I managed to pick up some of that miniature flagstone-effect wallpaper a couple of weeks ago. It’s great for gaming boards and dungeon tiles. Thanks for the top tip, guys!
liking the fez’s. Time being chewed up by real life seems to be the norm recently. I barely find any time to sit down to do? any hobby. I generally grab a few mins here and there, it sorta feeling like power napping but in this case power hobbying.
This weekend I had planned to finish off some FoW tanks and a Bolt Action unit of US infantry, but other tasks got in the way.
Good evening…. finally watched the XLBS. Also paid my CoG tribute today (as paypal is telling me) and now I’m drop dead tired. It was a long night last night as we (my wife and I) were at a birthday of friends of ours… I’m gettin’ to old for party on hours XD
Good night…
Happy Sunday, CoGers!
Loved the experiments in liquid resin and am already coming up with reasons to order some. Thanks to Gerry I already need to order Brown Stuff.
Speaking of… @avernos you really deserve a Golden Button for the insane level of research, detail, and craftsmanship you demand of yourself. Absolutely next level work and most inspiring. Thank you for sharing the project. I’ll be digging around in the garage later looking for my own plastic Greeks.
My favorite photo of my late grandfather was in his Shriners fez. Brings a touch of class to the proceedings and makes everywhere feel like Casablanca. Another great show, guys.
Come join us at Sitrep Podcast LIVE STREAM for a look at B Company, 3rd Para on the southern slope of Mount Longdon during the Falklands War. This assault was made on the night of 11-12 June 1982, and today we’ll see if the British can carry the day again (or technically – carry the night).

happy sunday,
-.-. — -. / … .. … -. .-. / .- -. – .. / -… .-. — – ….. .-. …
very good idea of the Fez caps.
please take them in the store ? then we can all set up a fez during the COG on Sunday.
very interesting the green stuff experiments, would like to see how the minatures (plastic and metal) react to the heat of the UV resin when they are placed on a base (different glues that are used to attach our figures to the base) and not having a face of a figure burned in your fingers, just think of INDIANA JONES where the SS burned his hand??
COG brother paul
it was a pleasant surprise in the mail thank you, something extra to look forward to
Happy Sunday, Looking good in the Fez’es! And Gerry’s minis look smashing both in and out of focus.
56 models in one box! Yup, it’s plastic and you get your value. Silly GW and their greed, we’re looking at a crash coming up here. People have less itme and more phone time, more youtube time and game time, our analog hobby is very niche, can’t see another 210 million profit for GW in 2020.
And Victrix is high detail, it’s not 1998 where the plastics from other companies are terrible, it’s even ground now.
While Victrix is great (especially their new stuff) it’s just not as high quality as the Warlord Plastics or Perry Plastics plus they’re very fiddly and at least their Napoleonic Bayonets are notoriously flimsy.
Nothing wrong with Victrix heck I have some Ancient Slingers and few boxes of the Highlanders I keep telling myself I’ll paint one day but there are some disadvantages of their kits.
That being said the newer stuff does look fantastic, I’ll have to get some in person before I make any decisions.
I very much doubt we’re headed for a crash simply, a correction maybe where a lot of unpopular companies and games will go away but not a market wide crash.

I know {hope} Battletech will still be around. It’s harder to kill than a radioactive New York cockroach!
all hail the cult of plastic cutters.
@warzan If you’re looking into doing sewer bases you could go down the 3D printing route. Here’s a link to a collection of Openforge compatible sewer tiles on thingiverse: https://www.thingiverse.com/devonjones/collections/openforge-sewer-series You can always upload them into tinkercad to “trim” or rescale them to fit your bases. Then you could apply the green water effect resin to add the muck.
your new paper looks like the big mats of kelp or seaweed you see on the TV shows @warzan
I’m ready to pick up the CoG fez, just say the word 🙂
happy Sunday! Time to get back to base’ics.
Gerry! don’t lick the wallpaper. I remember some lovely colours in my child paint box, like Chinese white, Arabic yellow and Lead red.
brilliant guys loved the basing challenge game.
Now that was good and different.
more ideas dam you’s looks like more money out of the piggybank.
Thank you for that lol.
I’m Fezzing up! 🙂
I dont care what my Wife says I want a Fezz.
Fezz me up Warzan
The big guys is right, about Napoleon and him being poisoned by the wall paper and the girls who painted the radium on the clock faces used to lick there brushes just as we all do.
Really enjoyed the show this week. I like the fez but really want to see Annie can do.
Also, there is more than a little irony in needing to paste the wallpaper down first.
Love the fez.
Didn’t get to see all the show this week, had to leave to catch a work flight and prefer to watch rather than listen.
Especially with fun experiments like these! Very interesting to watch. I would be interested to see the finished result in PV later this week.
Also, Fez Me!
It was nice to see the experiment with the resin. I have seen at model railway shows people will use a clear varnish for water effects. Think it was Varathane Clear Finish. It would air cure, but it would take time.
Happy Sunday Cogs .. I just came across someone using the techniques in some unique ways here .. hope its ok to share
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c41BUH4XDpo
always, remember sharing is caring 😉
Fantastic XLBS show lads. really enjoyed! The UV resin experiments was ace. May have to get a few wee bottles of that of some base work m’self.
Thought I’d join the fez-related fun! Picked this up in Egypt on holiday a few years back and have never had the chance to wear it in public. Well, now I have!
Happy Fez-day!
lol awesome
We will organise a COG Feztival Soon Enough 😉
Think I prefer to use the two part resin for big bases like those, as it seems expensive to use the bottled UV stuff – that being said, for a one off project or small puddle details, it seems to fit perfectly, love the pour and cure in 5 minutes and you are done.
Really enjoyed the change of style here, the everyone experimenting with a thing and chatting was more my speed.
Please get a copy of The Man Who Broke Napoleon’s Codes, The story of George Scovell by Mark Urban. It actually shows you some of his codes and how Scovell cracked them.
Arsenic poisoning is one of the theories on Napoleon’s death as tests have shown high levels of Arsenic in his remains and the wall paper was one theory due to the wet climate his home/prison was located.
