Happy Sunday all, Justin there are a number of those Brazilian Churrascaria places in London you should go when you’re over for Salute
Hey @tresilliian. Great to see you!
Woof woof woof! That’s my other dog impression!
Happy Sunday!!!
good Sunday all…
for matching historical armies; there is DBA and DBM.
they may be old rulesets but can match armies of various periods given the similarity of weapons used….a bow is a bow, cavalry is cavalry. old but our club still plays it alot since it’s easy to learn and you don’t need huge armies for DBA ( you need large armies for DBM).
So you historical(ish) folk, did you know about The Onna-Bugeisha, Japan’s Bad Ass Female Samurai?
Learn more here https://allthatsinteresting.com/onna-bugeisha-female-samurai
Edit – This is a two-minute docu-drama from the Smithsonian Channel about Takeko and the Aizu campaign.

It’s the XLBS……..Greetings to all CoG brothers and sisters!
Great to hear that @warzan is gaining some ground on his Star Wars CosPlay.
I continue my quest to build my ‘the Expanse’ Belters spacesuit. The Low Altitude Jet Pilot helmet that I’m basing my build on, (the same that the prop builders used on the series had used), has arrived and I promptly began disassemble of it so that I could dye the green cloth to a black. I have my 3D printer currently manufacturing parts to dress the outside of the helmet. I’ve also received the hard shell motorcycle backpack that is the basis of the air tank and power source of the suit. The last item I’ve received are two of the lights that mount on the shoulder straps of the pack that allow a better to be seen by others in the blackness of space.
I’ll be working on some graphics that I’ll need to print out to decorate the outside of the helmet as following the tradition of workers current and in the series that represents jobs/contacts that they have been on.
I may use a modified jumpsuit for now as the main garment, but I’m pretty such that I’ll be looking at duplicating the suits proper from the series.
I’ll try to start a project file on OTT sometime this week.
Happy Sunday! Speaking of historical battles, myself and @elessar2590 will be taking a play test swing at a new 1990s expansion of Valor & Victory today, namely part of the October 1993 Battle of Mogadishu as seen in the film “Black Hawk Down.”
We’ll be live on Sitrep Podcast Twitch and YouTube at 3:15-3:30 EST (8:15-8:30 UK time). We hope to see some of you there!

Very keen to play. After Soviets in Afghanistan, Somalia is the Modern period I have the most experience wargaming (Force on Force).
There’s just something so satisfying commanding men dressed for a soccer game, firing Ak’s like Gansta’s all while wacked out of their minds on Khat.
Good morning my lovers!
@warzan I’ve met loads of people. I met @avernos about 20 years ago and I met @lordsanes a few weeks back. I’m just gradually building up to the climax of meeting you
lol ooh god the anticipation mate is killing me 🙂 🙂 🙂
Bring your 3D Printer 😉
Forward march studios sell 2mm STL files so that would be interesting. But I really couldn’t justify the cost of buying one and besides I’m painting 28mm these days lol
All the “Cool Kids” have meet Torros
When the Emperor Trajan died his scouts were about a days march from the furthest outposts of the Chinese empire. So it’s possible the armies coukd have met if Trajan had lived
Just go as a human Jedi and spare yourself the latex sweat – and have fun.
Man with hole in pocket feels cocky all day.
@warzan that costume looks fantastic dude! And I’d say stick with Plo because then you can get the munchkins to dress up as Younglings 😀
Happy Sunday!!
Many years ago when the other half wanted to join a book club we invested in a large, impressive Sunday Times Atlas of History. It still provides a very useful high level view of what conflicts were going on around the world at different periods of history that is frequently pulled out to answer questions like “but what was happening in East Europe or the far East when the Normans were conquering Britain?”. Next step is often t’interwebby thing for deeper analysis.
Don’t forget about that documentary about Greek sculptors helping with the Terracotta army… Contact had been made long before Marco Polo.
So if Justin wasn’t staring at Lloyd’s wife’s feet, which part of her anatomy was he staring at?
I had the exact same thought.
A good idea is this map from c600 during the time of Maurice…
Only 50 years later they’d lost the Middle-East including the holy lands to the Arabic Caliphate… Crusade anyone?
I’m tearing out what little hair I have.
Those two Emperor’s are literally the two most Famous Byzantine Emperors of all time @warzan @lloyd here’s something they did.
He was the one who sent Belisarius (The Greatest Byzantine/Eastern Roman Commander of all time) out on his amazing reconquest of North Africa that involved retaking Rome. He took the Nation from the brink of disaster and for a time retook the old Roman Lands in North Africa and Italy. His battles were masterpieces using Trenches, Heavy Cavalry tactics and very clever. he once had only a few thousand men up against a massive Persian invasion and to trick them he went to a peace treaty with all his men dressed as scouts with hunting equipment so it looked like he had a massive army and needed all these men to feed it, the plan worked.
This isn’t to anyone in particular this is just yet another PSA. SPARTANS ARE NOT GREEKS. It was literally the most central and Core tenant of their entire identity far more than their Militarism, they ARE NOT Greeks. Spartans are from Crete and they enslaved all the Greeks, every years they would re-declare war on the Helot Greek Slaves just to remind everyone.
Would have been a brave man that told a Spartan to his face that he was a Cretan!
I’ve never seen anything that suggested they were from Crete, all the sources I’ve read spoke of them moving into the area as part of the Dorian migration from the north. Is this a new theory, as I’ve not looked at Greek history in about 20 years?
@avernos That’s right during the Dorian Migration they first came to Crete then from there went to Sparta. The Spartans believed they were brought from across from Crete by Hercules. So yes they’re originally from up North and came via Crete.
Makes sense both royal houses said they were descended from Heracles anyway
So its similar to how the Normans are viewed as French despite them originally having been from the north of Europe then?
Interesting show. The economics of 3D printing is actually quite interesting and I suspect it will benefit the consumer more than the artist in general. Something to consider, middle men have an incentive to push your product and due to economies of scale can get your product into the hands of a consumer more efficiently than you can.
Still never buying a 3D printer.
Also the face of Warren when he was practising his lightsaber… I did laugh my bollocks off at the look of seriousness and concentration! Sorry! But so much for brotherly love, poor Warren, bares his soul to the community regarding cosplay and brother Lloyd is unmerciful in his Uncle Owen comparisons. Who needs the internet to abuse you when you have family?
I very much agree with the first paragraph, Robert.
GW is the only gaming company that I’m aware of that has such direct contact with its customers and the public at large, via its stores.
I not sure that a combination of conventions, social media, including some guys on YouTube 😉 , will ever have that same reach.
As Warren is wont to say at the moment, “You don’t know what you don’t know”.
It is hard to search for something if you don’t know it exists.
In the past, when I’ve talked to people about gaming or wargaming, they initially think I’m referring to a video (computer or console) game, as this is more in people’s line of sight.
We have such Brazilian barbeque places in Brighton too.
I had to stop going. I kept confusing “eat all you want” with “eat all you can”. Meat sweats are not good.
that’s casa Brazil right?
we have a couple near me in pompey and southampton. didnt take me long to learn you dont go to the salad bar or get any of the sides, just have all the meat, and yes the meat sweats are a terrible infliction!!
There was a Casa Brasil on the marina, but that closed about 12 months ago. There’s a Touro Steakhouse just up from the Odeon cinema (on the seafront) that does a similar menu. Yeah, you can tell the novices easily, because they’re at the salad/sides bar!
@warzan It looks like a lot of work to put it on but you look good in your outfit.
Theres been 2 Mongolian restaurants in Belfast one on Stranmillis road and one later on Great Victoria Street. Both were excellent
Lovely episode. Here’s something for you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4XdPodNwSGU This is a Chinese travel report to Rome from the 3rd century.
And this is of a Roman traveling to China: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCSZQj8yvD4
You like great as a human jedi… nice outfit. or uncle with 2 kids as jawas..
@warzan, have you seen this?
https://www.warhistoryonline.com/ancient-history/romans-china-lost-legions-carrhae.html
There are some indications of romans reaching all the way to China. Some say myth, some say its a possibility. I’d say its the perfect gap to game in. The article suggest that roman legionaires were take prisoners, sold as mercenaries and then used to attack a chinese border town using a tetsudo formation.
Cheers for the golden button guys. Yeah, the Templars are for Saga. My mate got hooked on @avernos ‘s idea of doing 15mm crusades and started picking up a Saracen army. So months later, i’ve finally got around to getting an army for them to fight. Hopefully get some games of it soon.
@warzan A good visual depiction of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire https://youtu.be/NeNpEQ0hfMg There is one on
Byzantium too https://youtu.be/zkTZyk_CmyM There are loads of these types of vid on youtube. If you find one of the whole world and pause it near your chosen year, you can look around for potential “what if?” adversaries.
Also, cosplay is looking great. Expect to sweat buckets though so stay hydrated. I made a steampunk mechanical arm for a party, using a rubber glove to build onto. I had to dismantle it several times during the evening to literally pour it out. Should have used a leather glove or put vents in it somehow.
Museum miniatures always have a 25% off sale in January
Yeah. The sale is why I finally got around to getting these. Might order some before the end of the month.
Byzantine is a word for the Eastern Roman Empire used from the 16th century onward. Originally Constantinople was called Byzantium until Constantine renamed it. People in the Eastern Roman Empire were just Roman and they would have called themselves Roman.
@warzan something you want to look into is the relations between China and Rome. A quote from Wikipedia which may be where an interesting scenario can come from is this: ” In 97 AD, the Chinese general Ban Chao tried to send his envoy Gan Ying to Rome, but Gan was dissuaded by Parthians from venturing beyond the Persian Gulf. Several alleged Roman emissaries to China were recorded by ancient Chinese historians. The first one on record, supposedly from either the Roman emperor Antoninus Pius or his adopted son Marcus Aurelius, arrived in 166 AD.” So a possible scenario would be the Chinese vs Romans. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sino-Roman_relations
The early Muslims referred to ‘Rum’ i.e. Rome, and that’s how Byzantium / Constantinople is referred to in the Quran. That is the 600s CE.
that’s it … no more sleeping …
and what’s that episode in which Cartman did that chili cooking contest ?
suggestion for the “sweaty hand, wear a thin pair of cotton gloves! (did that for goalkeeping for field hockey)
Good show though guys a great craic, and good laugh. I needed it today (not having a good day), that limp-wristed flick had me giggling for ages!!
Poll of the weekend: Uncle Owen.
Oh my word! – want to join up about 5 different threads of discussion over the last couple of months? I’ve just re-watched the third episode of BBC’s 2010 series “The Normans”. (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00schjq).
The first two talk of the origins of the Normans, through the conquest of Britain in 1066. The third (“Normans of the South”) follows them into the Mediterranean where they conquered Sicily 6 years after taking Britain. Then the first crusade happens and we link through the Byzantine emnpire and the Varengian Guard (Norse men going full circle), taking Antioch and onto Jerusalem… Don’t want to spoil the ending 😉
According to this timelapse: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UY9P0QSxlnI the Byzantines had territory in Italy into the C11th. (Here’s a world time lapse for those who are interested and have somehow not managed to come across it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymI5Uv5cGU4 )
HAPPY SUNDAY…..
were the dain’s not Viking when the romans expansions took place.
happy XLBS
I bet your wife was cringing with the cresses in the costume warren.
Lol you guys are the bizz.
Brilliant episode.
I suspect that wearing that mask is going to be the most annoying/sweaty part of your costume.
Also :

https://youtu.be/N-L0dI0-wVE
This sent me down my own rabbit hole on Google researching the ancient world. I now have even more minis I want to buy.
If I could suggest a simple solution for your timeline issues; get your hands on the Penguin Atlas of Ancient History. there’s also a medieval one too. It’s Eurocentric but you can get similar books for the Middle East, Asia and the Americas too. When you look at the maps it’ll show the kingdoms/cultures/empires active year by year. It’ll be pretty obvious who would be fighting at the same time in history.
I’ve just watched the end of this and laughed, laughed and laughed. Not because of the outfit, but because of your hand movements.
Yet i have to admit, wearing the mask and outfit it’s not you, I was looking at but the character himself.
After Loyds suggestion, though after you’ve worn the mask for the first five minutes and lost wait, three or four stones by sweating the uncle suggesting would also work and give you time for your breathing and heart rate to return to normal.
The lads are talking about food. I can help.
In Belfast there’s a hot pot place, you get your broth and thin strips of meat to cook in the broth but also there’s a BBQ bit. You guys will love it. Called steamboat, try it and thank me later.
@warzan theoretical ‘Battle of Antioch’ a meeting between the early Imperial Rome ( your classic Romans) and Han Chinese
a bit of the theory:
https://www.warhistoryonline.com/ancient-history/romans-china-lost-legions-carrhae.html
I vaguely remember that the two armies could have met at Antioch as both had field armies within a couple of hundred miles of each other.
Oh and you did pick a bit of a historical minefield with Romans with their 1800 years of history 400bc to 1400AD
the Greeks two groups the bronze age then iron age, mesoamerica to which nobody has a real clue, after listening to various documentaries whilst painting.
When I was a kid was always confused with WW1 and WW2 for years thought they were like two weeks with the peace inbetween being a weeked they had off!
Justin will be happy to hear there are Brazilian Steakhouses everywhere in the states!
I like a Brazilian myself. There’s a great place in Birmingham does them.
Go with Plo, it’s got more Umph!
@warzan had an idea for you , around the same time period of the 5th Crusade
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fifth_Crusade 1217 to 1221 was the
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mongol_invasion_of_Europe 1220 to 1240
So your new army of crusders could try to not get chewed by the mongol hordes.
My 1/72 plastic Romans from the old ESCI Hadrian’s Wall set used to fight the Zulus from my Rorke’s Drift box. But that might not have been too crazy!
Romans vs Africans – https://youtu.be/fpdqB_GVCTk

Chinese vs Greeks! – https://youtu.be/Hffdx82i0sA
Looks good Warren, I did wonder how the robes would look but I think they hang well. Also don’t be so down on Uncle Owen, if it’s something you can do with the kids at some point (and actually want to!) Then why not?
Guys many thanks for the great fun at the end – had me laughing right along with you. Good luck @warzan.
