I call hax!
not familiar with that word. like your idea for a stargrave crew but in the end…the only crew that would be worthy us the time bandits gang….miss them….now that was a crew i’d like to be with. mine will just be some odds and ends figures…that way…it really is an odd crew. may pull out my old talisman timescape game and do a random shuffle.
northumbrian tin soldier do a lovely set of Time Bandits
Yes they do!
I have the complete set of their, ‘Time Robbers’, thanks to Gerry for pointing them out on a Weekender segment.
Very nice set indeed. Once I have mine all painted up I have a plan for showing them off. But I’ll need @avernos to help with their presentation. (insert Evil Grin)
HAPPY SUNDAY!!!
It’s the XLBS Show………….Happy Sunday Fellow CoGs!
So I started watching the show last night and crashed hard, (it was very later here in the US), so didn’t add any remarks at that time.
I did enjoy the reverse audio from @avernos Flashbacks to LP Records from the old days. (Yes I did take the time to isolate the audio from that clip and reverse it again….nice!)
I’m looking forward to STARGRAVE Week. Can’t wait to see what all the crew does with this week’s shows.
I snagged the rulebook and have been reading up on the differences between it and Frostgrave. I’m sure I’ll like it and have as much fun in space as we did in the fantasy realm setting.
I’m torn between building a crew that is inspired by ‘Firefly/Serenity’ or a crew inspired by the later half of the ‘Blake’s 7’ run on TV. I think I’m leaning toward ‘Blake’s 7’. It was a motley crew with lots of interesting characters with not always aligning agendas. Now to scan the internet for some imagines of the Scorpion. I believe that was the name of he second ship. But, it’s been a while so I may be remembering wrong.
I’m looking forward to the OTT D&D Crew Adventure. Lots to plan and details to work out. (Should I was my mustache?) ??
Well DONE to the Golden Button Winners!
That last bit has a typo……
(Should I wax my mustache?)
oh well……..
Happy Sunday!
I have some Egyptian penguins from Home-Raiders that, in the infinite choices provided by sci-fi, would be good as a Stargrave crew! May need to bulk-out with a couple of Polar-Bear heavies… in space no-one can hear the pedants banging on about different poles scream!
My challenge to Free (@fcostin) when painting the Moonstone minis. Meme them look like they’re being lit by just moonlight (unless they have other light sources). I think your watercolour experience of thin coats of colour might help!
that’s interesting…. I may have a go at one like that
Although I’ll be coming at it via oil shadows
Happy SUnday,
today is a great day to watch the Greatest movie ever made and to watch the XLBS, but mainly watch the Greatest Movie ever Made.
Nice show guys, really liking the creative options for Stargrave and would love to do a Warband based on the Flight of the Navigator but with a Brightburn twist. The central space wizard being an evil child and his crew made up of different alien species that he and the AI have kidnapped as youngsters from their respective worlds.
Dark but effective storytelling!
Happy Sunday,
Always a please to listen to you all while I hobby.
I’ve lived in York for about 13 years now, and did Jorvik when I first moved in but had forgotten about the turd. I would take my kids to visit it but the cost and the queue for it put me off… replica time!
It wasn’t too bad when I went to see the stuff at Jorvik. I don’t think it’s a place where I’d feel the need to go multiple times but it was worth it to get a peek at it all – not just the poo!
I got annoyed with it cos everything was vikings as if they were a people rather than an occupation/hobby! I felt it was all about the ride and not much else… saying that I know that since I went it got a make over thanks to the flooding so I may be doing it a disservice…
My idea for a stargrave crew. Is a Hms empress of India. Crewed by steam punk Red coats, white pith helmets. Spreading the love of the British Empire ?? in space. North star miniatures do the red coats and wargames illustrated do a steam punk queen victora
There’s a series of books about a Space Captain Smith which covers that in a fun way. The books are broad humour – equal parts cringe and laughter – but there’s some really fun concepts and I always thought they’d look good transferred to the tabletop.
That’s a great shout – love that series but yeah there is an element of cringe at times!
there is a 1879 RPG, set in a steampunk universe. off down the rabbit hole with me!
Space 1889 RPG………..unless I missed a prequel printing.
Come to think of it, that would be interesting, a prequel for that setting.
Anyhow, it has a very good steampunk feel Space 1889. Tabletop games as well as the RPG.
1879 was a different system, but I decided to go space 1889 instead https://fasagames.com/dl-1879/
Space captain Smith is brilliant, a crew of giant Nazi ants would be a great opposition
My stargrave crew would be The devils son in law along with his villainous crew of Leroy and skillet ( they still dont like him but must work to pay off a dept) also he would have his trusty lady friend Nell the hacker, and the muscle of the crew would of course be Scarface Willie the meanest outlaw in the galaxy. They would be in search of a theater showing THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER MADE.
For my stargrave crew I would look to my childhood… either Bucky o’hare, dead eye duck etc for one crew against toads, or Bravestarr. Think these could be easier given those plastic cowboys that came out a few weeks ago…
I desperately want to see a Bucky O’Hare crew…
The rabbits from sally 4th would help…
forgot about him. good choice.
That’s a great one!
Check out the Reaper Bones fungal range if you haven’t already. They paint up really nicely in pastels. I added some mushrooms from Bad Squiddo to the bases on mine.
For my Stargrave crew it would have to be Buck Rogers with Twiki as his sidekick and all the cheesy references that go with it. Or, as I was sitting here thinking about it, how about a Farscape crew, have to see if there are minis available.
biddy-biddy-biddy great idea Buck!
true.
For my Stargrave project I think it would be cool to do a big old droid uprising mob. just like from Solo a Star Wars Story or the RPG adventure. Maybe not so much the ‘heavy wokeness undertones’ that were painfully crammed into the film but the idea really really appeals to me.
you could bring out all the random droids inc things like hero GONK or just make them out of random scrap because that’s how they were made in the first place! it doesn’t need to posh or expensive!
GONK
Would Gonk be a mystic, a veteran or a rogue?
probably a mystic! it is a mystery to me how these humble power units aren’t given enough credit…need a starfighter powering up, get a GONK, need a temporary lighting rig working so you can work at night, Get a GONK, need a brilliant sound effect for a droid, get GONK! unsung heroes I tells ya!
droid uprising against human overlords….lead by bender
he came here with a simple dream, to kill all humans.
Agh! Makes me think back to the promo Star Wars mini record stories that were put out with kids meals in the 80s for the burger chain Hardees. They also did the same thing for Gremlins
*sits down to eat breakfast, watching XLBS*
Warren: …viking turd the size of your arm!
I’d do a Stargrave crew based around Warren and the crew, the back stories could be hilarious.
The Adventures of Justin in : Skyclad in Space!
Geeeez, that’ll “live rent free” in my head for a while………
Happy Sunday indeed 😀
For Stargrave my default would be to build a ragtag band of individuals gathered together for shelter and survival, much like Firefly or Cowboy Bebop, but thats a little generic out of the box. How about Eschers in Spaaaace? They’ve stolen a ship and now they’re going out to take what they want and stomp on the universe at large. They meet people along the way and perhaps they kill them, perhaps they ransom them off, but perhaps they bring them in to their crew, either as forced labour to fix the ship they don’t understand, or perhaps they become one of them.
After the Eschers in Spaaaace line now I’m considering a team of muppet pigs for Stargrave.
I’d love to see a crossover between Red Dwarf and Mystery Science Theatre 3000 but I don’t think this is the right medium for that.
A crew made up of all those ordinary people who ended up in scifi settings who shouldn’t have? Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, John Chrichton, A chimpanzee in a space suit. I’m sure there’s more ordinary guys who have no idea where they are but keep saving the day in space that can be added to the list.
Happy Sunday! listening about Stargrave got me thinking of an Ocean’s Eleven style crew for heists made up of hustlers and professional thieves. Not sure on what minis I’d use though or when I’d get around to it either.
Yay XLBS show.
Don’t forget the house of lords @avernos an the fossils their.
I’ve been bouncing a few ideas around for Stargrave:
The most obvious? Using some of the Crew sets that Modiphius have put out for their Star Trek RPG could be a fun time – give me an excuse to actualise my Star Trek: Online crew…
Looking at my pile of shame? Well I have a fair few bits from Hasslefree, Bombshell Babes and MERCS that could create some nifty crews.
The dream though? Well that’s simple – I’m eyeing up a 3d printer in the next few months. If I can pick one up (and find somewhere safe to set it up) then I’m going Full Mando. My computer has a ridonculous folder of STL’s, of which a shockingly large number are various different takes on the iconic armour. Would probably digf inot the old LEgends EU lore for the Mando’a and try to do them as one core Clan, with variations to the colours to denote personal history/ quests/ remembrance.
Another turd monster Lol
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rMrSZ76tEnA&feature=emb_imp_woyt
I did get the full Nickstarter for Stargrave, but thinking about a crew reminded me that I’ve got the Not-Blake’s 7 set that Crooked Dice produced for 7TV a few years ago. They would be perfect if I could find where I’ve put them…
you mispronounced Avon’s 7 there 😉
It’s a great shout I’ve been looking at a few of Crooked Dice’s sets, Flash Gordon as well could be fun
Aaaaa Monkey have anyone seen the new series?
Is it as funny as the original.
Is that DNA transport pods? @avernos
My brother and I have played a couple of games of stargrave, really been digging it, I’ve been working on using my guard stuff, as I dont play 40k anymore, but, there’s ‘badger’ heads in the mercenary box, so I’ve been thinking some Space badgers, insert space station badger here, combined with some ‘squats’ using the Dwarves from oathmark and some of the tasty looking new sets from stargrave. Or, hear me out, space squat badgers…
Free the plastic crack dealer.
Stargrave sounds really interesting.
I think it would be fun to run a Dad’s Army crew ( I actually did this with my Kill team Genestealer Cult). I could do with a Stargrave crew.
I can see it now…
Episode 18: ‘Grabbed by the Klingons’
“This is Captain Mainwaring’s Log, recording from the Intersteller Starship ‘Walmington-on-Sea’ I have sent Sgt Wilson, Jones & Pike down to the planets surface. I haven’t heard from them in several hours I have asked Godfrey to contact them. Any response Godfrey? Godfrey? Wake up man!”
“Sorry Captain. Hello? Hello? Is anybody there?” Stammers Godfrey.
“What are ye doing Godfrey? This is Frazer in engineering. Tell the Captain if I don’t get some coal in the furnace soon, we are all doomed!”
Mainwaring struts over. “The radio microphone, give it here man.” Godfrey hands over the headphones.
“Sgt Wilson do you hear me?” Mainwaring looks at what he’s holding and rolls his eyes, while putting down the headphones and picking up the microphone. “Wilson? Jones? Pike?”
A crackle comes over the radio “Jones here sir, Jones here Sir.”
“You don’t have to repeat yourself Jones. Idiot.” snaps Mainwaring. The radio crackles.
“I didn’t receive that sir?” comes the worried voice.
“I said, You don’t have to repeat yourself Jones. What is the status of the landing party?”
“Don’t panic Sir, Don’t panic. Pike has been captured by Aliens and Sgt Wilson has gone after him!”
“Pike has got himself captured? Stupid Boy!” sighed Mainwaring. “Now listen up men. This is your Captain speaking. We are going on a rescue mission.”
To be continued…
You see. THIS is why I gladly give up my Sunday morning lie-in! Great show. Loved the Stargrave stuff and well done to the Golden Button winners – even if the first sight of Dug’s Ducks did make me snort coffee!
I’m busy playing (and now teaching someone else to play) Five Parsecs, but Stargrave is up next for rotation. Originally, I had a hankering to make a Wild West-themed squad (ala Firefly meets the Hateful Eight) but after seeing today’s episode, I want to make my very own Space Cult (Space CoGs?). I can see them roving through space, bringing the Wyrd to the unwashed masses (“Convert or Die!”), saving lost souls (“Repent or Die!”) and doing a spot of Witch-Hunting (“Die or, er, Die!”).
Now what should I call them?…
Thats edd the duck after he escaped the collector?
This was the perfect length for priming my Spitfires, and Typhoons for Blood Red Skies.
StarGrave looks so good, but I already have so many games that no one plays, I really don’t want to throw money away on another.
Ooh Ronny an the Who’s Yay.
What about the crew of the Betty @warzan
The Mushroom Army they’ll grow on you?
Lol a fab funny show guy’s
Another great XLBS,
For my stargrave crew it would have to be based around a 3rd class technician who after being put in stasis for smuggling a pet aboard an interstellar mining vessel finds himself ‘thawed’ out 3 million years in the future possibly the last human alive with just a humanoid evolved from his smuggled pet, a service mechanoid, a hologram of his bunk mate/supervisor and a computer with an IQ of 6000 who may or may not be going senile.
Morning Peeps,
Stargrave Crew, I originally thought as many possibly did of Firefly……but then changed my mind and went for Captain Blunt, a veteren Droptrooper from the last Galactic War, his 1st mate the Giant genetically engineered (Primaris Space Marine) Arper, the wpns specialist, Hangman ,the hacker Arris, and various troopers , survivors of the East Ridding Yeomanry.
Stargrave week.. yesssss!
My crew would be led by a roguish dude named Noah Sol, who leads a desperate group of misfits around the galaxy just trying to make a living and survive.
He doesn’t know why, but he has an inate dislike of synthetic humans, he swears its from a previous life but isn’t entirely certain.
His first mate is a female called Nelle Yelpir, who hates all things xenomorphic, and always carries her trusty flamethrower to turn them into Ash….
I think that a St.Trinians themed crew would fit Stargrave perfectly.
They would never get beaten, ever.
If you take the time to think about it; you know I’m right.
I just hope that I can get a “Flash Harry” figure somewhere.
My crew would be based on firefly with cowboys and lasers and using Mel the terrain tutors hat head from the book as jayne cobb.
Happy Sunday.
Those pics showing that Stargrave setup looks great. I’m excited for next week.
Gerry, there’s actual rules for a homebase in Frostgrave. You can acquire extra add ons for it which will give you bonuses for your warband, like a free warhound if you buy a kennel for example.
I’m all set for Stargrave, I already have my book and a painted crew, I just need creatures to fill out for random npcs.
Happy Sunday!
My RPG group played Rogue Trader by FFG for just over 3 years. In that time we built up quite the diverse team that would be ideal in Stargrave. We had a human captain, navigator, doctor and an adventurer passanger who turned out to be a member of the Ordos Xenos. We had a Jokareo (super smart orangutan) and a squat engineers that were constantly fighting with outer, our scouts were a Dark Eldar and Kroot, and we had a combat team that we would draw on that included Ssylth (a snake warrior), a Klingon (‘like’ non-IP infringing), a Wraith (From Stargate Atlantis) and a team of 4 sentient robots, one of which was a dog that had a laser in his nose like K9 from Dr Who, and a servitor who had started to recover his memory. The best thing about it was that we’d swap out the characters depending on the scenario. The worst this about it was that we could never have them all in the game at the same time. Well apparently now we can!
I would love to see a crew of space Minotaurs. They are not interested in the whole engineering or space ship operation thing though. They just like to fight. ( a whole crew would be way to powerful) So, a few hired themselves out to a group of Gretchin that stole a ship wanting to be pirates. Gretchin being themselves are now trying to emulate the big guys. A horde of pirate, Minotaur costumed, Gretchin could be fun.
I always loved the Star Trek episodes form the original series where they had Greco Roman type characters, so I would like to do a crew of Space Romans!
I’d like to make a stargrave crew that were tax collectors, but in the dangerous galaxy they are basically bounty hunters. They’re just doing their job but everyone hates them and wants to make them “disappear”. They love their job though and relish nothing more than the thrill of the chase, hunting down errant taxpayers, armed to the teeth with a licence to extract the credits in any way they see fit. Human bones and teeth sell for a decent price in some markets…
I have a couple of ideas for Stargrave crews either:
The Crew of the Oz, led by Dorothy, accompanied by her Side Kick Toto the Dog Soldier, a leonine alien, a clunky robot, a space tramp and a bunch of Munchkins as generic crew.
Or
The crew of the Looney Tunes, with Bugs Bunster as the Captain, Daffy Dick as sidekick, Wylie Coyte the tech, Rod Runner as the fast sneaky Assassin. Remainder of Crew made up of other characters; Sylvester, Tweetie Pie, Jessica Rabbit etc
For my Stargrave crew, I think I would have a band of cultists:
An Owlbear,
Sean Connery in a loin cloth,
A bloke’s face on a big motile monitor,
A Wookiee,
A heavily armed miniature with treads and a turret,
A goblin carpenter and his pet beard,
And a pair of bothers that I can’t decide how to represent yet.
The polar station crew from ‘The Thing!’ John carpenters awesome film. Gotta have Lars wielding a flame thrower alongside Kurt Russel.
Or just go for Schwarzenegger and the predator crew! Tooled up with Dutch for a mission in space!
Happy Sunday!
At last I have a use for the River Horse Terminator Genysis Starter box figures to use as my Stargrave crew.
“I’ll be back…. In a different Game” …..
One of the warband/crew I have planned is an all female space pirate mob, based around this Salute miniature as the Captain. Her dog/lizard creature gives her additional attacks in combat.
https://images.app.goo.gl/2LGvYQNY8mdhiSbc8
They’ve all been displaced by the war and are fed up with men screwing things up. So if you’re male and fall into the hands of these ladies your fate may be good or really bad depending on their mood at the time. There will be no males in the crew, even the robots will have female personalities.
They roam space looking for suitable ships and ports to plunder. They’re a viscous motley crew of cyberpunk pirates.
I’m looking around for suitable minis to use as crew, the second in command is a former officer who served in the warwar. She adds a level of military strategy to the crew, and I’m going to use the Captain Kara mini from Sedition Wars.
https://images.app.goo.gl/HabeGtYriRMPtZkn7
I’ve already painted Kara and started a project for StargraveStargrave.
https://www.beastsofwar.com/project/1621866/
Great Atuin has been discovered on the outer rim of the galaxy. The Discworld exists! The turtle moves and the boys from Ankh Morpork are now officially in space and looking at stargrave loot.
5 minutes in and we are talking about fossilized human poop. I have found my people.
I’m making my crew outta old Warlord Gates of Antares models. Its making them look more super high tech sci fi, so I’m going to try and make them look worn and old. Thinking of painting graffiti on the armour etc. Using the Ghar Empire models as full combat armour in game.
It’s just nice to get use outta these cool models you know
I like the idea of creating an Alien Legion themed warband based on the comic book. A foreign legion in space made up of multiple weird aliens so I can have a Jugger Grimrod running around swearing at everyone and cutting them up with a wire
Happy Sunday!
First show I’ve managed to finish on an actual Sunday!
The rulebook art for Stargrave made my mind lean towards a cyberpunk theme, but if I was to build a team from parts it would be a team of prison escapees, having all kinds of stolen items to use as weapons, the starship would be a converted prison transport, and the weapons would be batons, ball and chains, then if they were a particularly lucky prisoner a riot shotgun.
My only problem would be to actually complete the project!
The VC’s from 2000AD woukd make a good Stargrave group
I remember that story, Vacuum Cleaners “Vape them Geeks!”
Looking forward to Stargrave week.
I’ve been researching how to build the Omega Force crew from https://www.fantasticfiction.com/d/joshua-dalzelle/omega-force/.
Plus Stargrave lets me build out their ship the Phoenix.
Jason Burke Captain – Human Merc – Infinity Yu Jing Tiger Soldier
Lucky – Second – Synthetic Killing machine
Crusher – Security – Wolf from Equipe Mirage – 5
Doc – Medic – researching a mini
Twingo – Chief Engineer – researching a mini
Kage – Hacker – researching a mini
Stargrave probably has the widest scope for potential miniatures I’ve ever seen. I’m looking at a militant religious order looking to bring the bright burning truth of the divine work on the end of the burning bright lasgun beam and flamer. I’ve got Necromunda Redemptionist, the Ecclesiarchy miniatures from Blackstone Fortress and then I’d love to add in some North Star plastic Cultists with Stargrave weapons.
As the general ne’er do wells I’ve made some space pirates by combining the old Empire militia plastics with parts from the Cadian and Catachan plastics. Fun times ahead.
I was messing about in Heroforge the other day and made myself as a Sith. That got me thinking about making a crew based after the fall of the Empire, sort of a roving band of really dirty looking stormtroopers.
Another idea I had was getting the Immorten Drumph mini from Hasslefree as a captain and having him lead a crew of post apocalyptic sci-fi cultists.
So I was showing off a few pics of some models I was working on including some for Alkemy (the Aurok orcs), some Stargrave metals from the nickstarter, and I’d just gotten in some Footsore Greeks… my buddy saw the pic and went, “Sweet! Sci fi Greeks in Space!!”… wasn’t at all the point… but now I’m pulling together laser spears and tech-ridden hoplite spears and 100% doing Space Spartans 30,000…
And in three, 2, WON!
Happy Sunday Cogs
If you have a problem, if no one else can help, and if you can find them….maybe you can hire The A-Stargrave Team.
Oh it would have to be the crew from the film Space Pirates as my Stargrave gang because you can’t beat assault robots with axes
I was thinking for a while about what crew I might do for Star Grave and I decided it was a but like designing a burger. You can put anything on there – bacon, Various sauces, other meats and fancy cheeses. But ultimately it’s hard to beat the humble classic ketchup, mustard and cheese. Maybe a slice of onion or pickle to suit your tastes. Sometimes less is more.
And with that I would go with the trader/scavenger crew flying around the galaxy just trying to make a living and stay one step ahead of the law. It’s Firefly. It’s Titan AE. It’s Space Truckers. It’s the Mandalorian. It’s Han and Lando. It’s a whole host of cliches but there’s a reason it’s popular – because it’s fun. If I had to I would probably pick the crew of Titan AE to theme it in, but that’s because I like both their ship and the theme tune.
In fact, I think I might watch Titan AE while I paint some more Star Saga
I’d like to do a crew for Stargrave based on the 1984 movie “Ice Pirates”. Including space herpes! XD
Happy Sunday!
@avernos I love the MicroArts Discworld minis. As much as I want the entire set at once (because having things! Damn you, need for immediate gratification), I believe you have the right idea in getting them in the themed sets. That’s how I think newbies should read the books as well, come to think of it.
I’ve run the gamut on Stargrave crew ideas. I have lots of figures already (Post-Apoc Tintin crew for instance) but can’t help imagining smash ups to build and paint. Mostly because I need another unfinished project but then who doesn’t? Being a huge fan of The Expanse I have been mulling over how I could use the crew of the Rocinante as Amos isn’t to be messed with. Somehow I found myself linking Avon’s Seven (again, I’m with Gerry) with the Seven Samurai as those patterns would be fun to paint. At the moment, coming full circle (clearly I’m not the only one @jmsstockwell), I am intrigued by the concept of taking Pratchett’s Watch into space, defending and acquiring resources for the Space Station Ank-Moore. Since it is made up of every species one could find in a fantasy novel the switch to aliens and droids is easy. Plus I can give them all breast plates and helmets, should probably paint a turtle on each of them somewhere…
I think that a Stargrave warband based on the Galaxy Rangers might be fun… although I don’t know if they’d let them ride their awesome cyberhorses..hmmm.
My actual Stagrave crew is all the sci-fi randoms I’ve been accumulating over the years plus some new bits and pieces like the North Star kits.
The ultimate crew though? I’d maybe look for some Rogue Trader era Orks. The Orks as muscle and grots as brains (squigs and snotlings as slapstick goons played for laughs). Maybe have a clever Grot as leader like a Skarsnik in spaaace.
Stargrave sounds awesome.
I’ve been backing Seb miniatures on Patreon. He does great Star Wars miniatures.
So for Stargrave I’m going full Star Wars crews.
I will start with printing a Weequay pirates crew. With Weequay Jedi (psionicist) as captain and his Veteran human bodyguard (a great looking “Nomad” miniature with stormtrooper helm and ragtag bits he designed himself) as firstmate.
He is currently sculpting the Bad Batch so that would be a great crew as well.
I have loads of files now so my brother can go through them and pick some he likes.
So many options. I think it’s going to be great. Mandalorian?
I’m going to start printing now. 🙂
My Stargrave crew has already been started as of last week. It’s a Nazi’s in space theme complete with a Robotic Hitler
Lots of really amazing ideas for Stargrave crews but I’m surprised no one has mentioned Space Balls.
Think of it, Lone Star the roguish Captain, Barf his loyal first mate, Dark Helmet as the mystic and Dot Matrix as the the robot! Could be epic!
@fcostin take a look at Crooked Dice miniatures and look for The Weed, Creepers, Creeper Hounds, Fungoids and Flying Fungi. The take a look at Hydra Miniatures and take a look at Vardu Warriors and Vardu Sprouts. Those minis should give you a good start on an all fungi Stargrave crew.
I’m going to create the crew of the Simian Sunrise. This will give me an opportunity to use some of my unpainted Judge Dredd miniatures. Mostly the ape gang and one or two robots. The crew of the Simian Sunrise have set out into space get some payback. Because their planet was ruined when the Spaceballs crash-landed on it.
I want a Stargrave crew that is comprised only of warriors that produced the “Stoolus Giganticus”. A group of aliens abducted the viking clan (from earth) and other sentient beings that produced the largest stool samples. Theses aliens have a belief that only the greatest warriors produce the greatest and largest stool samples so they go around the galaxy abducting and collecting DNA so they can produce the greatest warriors to fight for them. My crew would be the descendants (or even clones from the original DNA).
I love the idea of Stargrave and I think I would do a rag tag group of Cyberpunks who have gone interstellar to hack the system.
That episode really has the creative mind going and I’ve a few ideas for a Stargrave crew.
Just based on my pile of unpainted minis I think the Deadzone Rebs would make a good diverse crew without much effort at all.
Forge Fathers would also work- a miner crew out for star plundering profits.
Going in a weirder direction I can’t help wondering how much effort would be involved in turning the cutesy minis from Stuffed Fables into a sci-fi crew… perhaps they are the robotically animated companions of a young girl genius stranded on a ship when her family got killed by boarders, supplies only last so long before she has to venture out with her companions to resupply…
ABC Warriors style robot rebels would be a cool Stargrave crew.
lead by Walter
That was a surprising bit of ska for breakfast.
Great show guys. I can’t wait to get some stargrave in myself. Picked up the boxes and book through the nickstarter. Also thank you for the golden button. And yes the project is basically finished. Just keeping it open until the raffles go live.
My stargrave crew would definitely be Silent Running based – a set of “toolbox” droids and a slightly unhinged custodian.
I like the idea of them travelling the galaxy collecting seeds and exotic plants for their garden.
Of course, the odd sentient plant could easily then be part of the warband too – a well trained Triffid perhaps?
So after much thought, my Stargrave Crew will be the ramshackle set of motley washouts who wander from place to place gathering junk and scrap on their rust bucket the SS Weasel. The Captain is Arnie Rimmer, during the last wars he was the inefficient officer (promoted because his Father had money)who was completely desk-bound on a remote outpost. He saw no combat and spent his time cataloguing supplies. He tells everyone that he was a heroic leader of a crack team of fighters and fancies himself as a Tekker due to the long hours he spent putting Lego together during his tour of duty. The First Mate was recruited by Rimmer because he was bigger and stronger than anyone he had met before. Little did Rimmer consider that “Scarface” got all his scars because he is not actually very good at fighting. Although large and scaly he is more of a poet than anything else and as such many consider him a Mystic. Rimmer is such a competent captain that he has just recruited a new team, having been robbed and left for dead by his previous crew. One member he has great hopes for his is new medic because he is an actual Doctor. Little does our hapless Captain know that his newest crew member actually received his Doctorate from the lowest ranking Space University in the Galaxy and is in fact a Dr of Space Media Studies. This bunch of hopeless and unqualified nobodies will I hope survive by sheer dumb luck and ignorance. Now to sort out some figures.
To all that are listening, my name is Charlotte Badger and I am captain of the Venus. I am A Rogue Trader in the faithful service of the Imperium of Mankind. A short while ago, my ship was acquired, by what I at first thought to be an Inquisitor and his two companions. The inquisitor identified himself only as Samuel Preterius. His massive companion turned out to be a true Space Marine, that had lost its armor. He only identified himself as Lex. But the third most peculiar was a Squat. Not one of those pesky halflings. He goes by the name of Grimm.
I A loyal servant to the emperor, now seek help. Not only did the first meeting leave a bad impression. The short acquisition of my ship to find, as I understood an Assasin named MehLindi, turned almost into all-out war.
These four individuals now took total control of ship and crew to fight their own personal war. Other ships had been raided, supply routs ambushed. I am now as a prisoner on my own ship plead for help to free myself and my crew from this menace. Several of my crewman and women have died, in pursuit of what I only understand to be a sun of the Emperor. These four are scrupulous in their behavior and do not seem to have the Imperium in their best interest. I can only hope that someone gets this message and finds a way to stop them. and one more thing, the assassin, she is more than one. but I already said too much.
The Emperor Protects
@avernos – your stargrave miniatures look great. I definitely see how a good flat Matt varnish improves the results of contrast.
Can you recommend a genuinely good flat Matt that is available in the UK? I still find that most Matt varnishes still have a sheen.
there are two, I favour the mecha from vallejo as it’s cheaper. check this out https://www.beastsofwar.com/featured/gerry-can-show-you-how-to-use-matt-varnish/
Ah thank you – i guess there’s no excuse for me not learning to use an airbrush now!
You can brush all of them on. I just used the airbrush to avoid putting one on thicker than another
I think I would go for a more steampunk/pulp feel for a Stargrave crew, perhaps using the Sky Pirates models from Pulp Alley and Artizan Designs. Either that or a crew of space rats (and other rodents).
Good show all. You guys are always excellent company to hobby along to.
I’ve so much sci-fi stuff I could use for Stargrave, but if I was to create something new… I might go for a space Torchwood team! Not much of a change, sure, but at least when my Captain dies (as he inevitably will with my dice rolling ?), I can use the same mini and just say “fixed moment in time”!
Thank you for the golden button. It’s much appreciated. Not sure where the inspiration came from to paint those droopy lips into a beak but I like the outcome.
If I were to make a second list (which I almost definitely will) I would make a group heavily crewed by Captain Vars mortal enemies… The Daktari. Lead by two of the Jedi style cool minis from the Nickstarter, I would make my Daktari by having Gnoll heads on Cultist bodies and armed with weapons from the NorthStar Stargrave Crew Sprue.
I would also look into making some Pirates and primitives from chaos cultists and NorthStar Barbarian bodies and the Stargrave Crew set arms again.
Tons of fun hobby ahead.
Ben’s stargrave crew idea reminds me of the second heavy metal film, space barbarians.
I think if I did a star grave crew it would probably be a band of pirates, captain harlock style.
My ideal Stargrave crew will be a Templars warband in space. I will have to do some kitbashing, but I don’t think there’s anything cooler than smithing heathens in space :).
Hmm.. to build a Stargrave crew… let me think. I’d say harken back to the likes of Space 1889. Making up a steampunk space force would be great as they cruised about the cosmos on a ship powered with electro-heliostatic effluvium and a strong sense of derring-do. It’d be quite interesting to get the models together and kitbash.
edit: read further down the comments and see the idea was run with… damn. Maybe use the film “A Trip to the Moon” as a start to an imperial Russian precursor to their space program. Longcoat clad Slavs with beards to awe and firearms to make people rethink messing with them. Could the cosmos ever be the same?
After seeing the announcement about the Goonies board game last night my mind’s been wandering over creating a bunch of crews with pairings of Captains and First Mates based on the main players of the film so that they can have powers and skills to better represent them. Although some don’t exactly fit each personality with a little creative license I’m sure you could make it work:
Mikey (Veteran/Mystic)
Data (Robotics Expert/Tekker)
Chunk (Veteran/Biomorph)
Mouth (Rogue)
Sloth (Veteran/Biomorph)
Brand (Veteran)
Andy (Mystic/Psyonicist)
Stef (Veteran/Cyborg)
Then just to find the right minis to represent them…..
Yuss! Stargrave might have me even more excited than A Billion Suns: good times for SciFi!
I would make a crew inspired by the Interstella 5555 anime, which is set to Daft Punk’s album Discovery (look it up on youtube. Do it). I would base the team/band on the blue-skinned seventy’s electro aliens. They would be a group of traveling music stars that, while on tour, help those in need and continually find themselves confronted with the schemes of evil rival bands.
I would like to create a Stargrave team bases around the TV Space 1999 team or even better around Blakes’ &. How one team of the crew from the Liberator, Avon, Blake, Villa, etc with the psycher Carly and the rebel crew and the other based other the Federation with Captain, guards and the military.
Or do a team based around a Victorian Sci Fi theme, with guys in pith helmets and uniformed, ladies in dresses, men in tweed longue suits and imperial guides
An oompa loompa crew would be a laugh for stargrave led by captain Wonker.
I think one of my Stargrave teams will for sure be like a dark coven of assassins. I’ll probably use some house Delaque sprus from Necromunda with alien heads. Dark slick trenchcoats and various weaponry.
My Stargrave crew will consist predominantly of Kroot!
I have a bunch of AT43 Karmans, so I’d try to build a Jokaero style warband with them and other simian miniatures to play Stargrave!
Looking forward to the rest of Stargrave week.
Happy belated Sunday! Great show! I started a Stargrave project log a months ago. I put it On Hold because of the Spring Clean Challenge took up all my free time! It was based on Robert E Howard’s Solomon Kane 17th century Puritan character. I have a bunch of Lead Adventure Forum Astropolis II Kickstarter minis that I will convert some of with guns. I now might bring it back after the SCC. Really looking forward to watching you guys Role Pay some D&D.
Stargrave has opened me upto so many more games and miniature companies. I’ve purchased FG 2nd Ed, Ghost Archipelago, Scrappers, Rangers of Shadow Deep, Zona Alfa and many more. Also so many new boxes filled with sprues from Wargames Atlantic.
I am liking the look and feel of star grave. I’ve just started to try Frostgrave and am liking the simpler rules and narrative campaign it’s turning into.
My first sci-fi film that i loved was Flashgordon, so i’d love to build a brian blessed led hawkmen crew. Any excuse to talk like the magnificent Brian during a game would be so much fun.
I’m torn whether i’d keep the flash gordon style or try and upgrade them to have similar abilities like they did the african theme in black panther, so when they used the robes to create shields, i think i’d want my hawkmen to show that they get force fields generated when moving their wings in front of their bodies, to block incoming fire etc (and of course shout my wings are like a shield of steel a lot!)
havw to go with a Dan Dare crew, the 2000 AD version not the Eagle one, way too much spandex, hate spandex and cyclists (to clarify not the people/kids who cycle, just the rich tossers on their expensive bike hoggin the road on their own or with their “mates” when it’s F88kin rush hour/school drop off/pick) sorry got distracted their. Yeah Dan Dare and his crew
I think it would be fun to play an all non-human crew in Stargrave. Space Lizards and robots perhaps? Basically the best crew characters from Mass Effect.
I love the badger heads, to quote the immortal Mr Badger, thump ’em & thump ’em & thump ’em, preferably with a heavy carbine/ rapid fire gun
Good show
Figured I may as well sneak in and try and get another entry into the competition
really enjoying Stargrave week. Thinking of using some of my old AT-43 models with it! Thanks guys!
You know I was sitting here thinking everyone is going to be doing humans and aliens in Stargrave and then it was mentioned that there was huge guys with bionics and I was instantly enthralled with the idea of a heavily customized Mechanicus style warband. So many bionics and strange but antique wargear.
Ever since the hype for Stargrave started ramping up I’ve been looking at Wargames Atlantic’s Einherjar from the Death Fields range and wanting to do something with that.
Haven’t found anything to rock as a captain yet but I love the idea of finding some really quite elegant and ethereal alien creature to act as a Captain and load them with up with psychic powers. Then they could waft into the battle throwing psychic might around whilst their little stumpy space dwarf underlings tromp ahead of them as a pack of angry, stumpy enforcers.
Appeals to my sensibilities anyway.
