Flames of War FTW: Recon Unit Rules Explained!

It has returned! Warren and Dave are back for Season 2 of Flames of War For The Win! We kick things off with the guys looking at Recon Units in the game and how they can seriously screw up your day if you're not ready for them. However they do aid in creating that truly balanced army!

Yay, Dave is back! The dynamic duo returns!
Interviewing high profile players such as Mr. Wilcox is a very nice idea.
It will be interesting to see how differently Warren will build his list on this season now that he is a battle-hardened, tourney player. 😀
“Wild Bill’s” input was great in the “Know Your Enemy” segment. I am so glad to see Sherman “Easy Eights” finally get a mention, after all the rave talk of Fireflies in the first season. Yes, the Brits weren’t the only ones with killer Shermans, you know! Although admittedly, the Fireflies were first to my knowledge. Like many technical ideas of World War II, stubborn Americans didn’t clue in until certain concepts proved their worth in British / Commonwealth formations.
Great to see FOW FTW back!
Who puts this up on the same day as Spain v Netherlands???
Very cool
Finally my FoWFTW fix! After watching this I think I’ll need to look over my lists. How could I overlook recce units.
Great vid guys keep ’em comming. Nice table too. Can I ask where you got the trees?
Nice to see fow ftw back !
Nice!!
Been looking forward to the return of this and Dave!!!
Avid watching for me as we have an escalation league starting at our club soon.
Interesting concept, combined arms ftw! 🙂
Its back!!!! Its true!!!! Praying to the Dice God does effect BoW!!!
Not since The Empire Strikes Back has the second part of a series opened with such promise! Or maybe it’s just the snowy battle board whispering subliminal influence in my ear.
Needless to say, I’m very excited to see Flames of War: For the Win return to Beasts of War. Right out of the gate I was struck by the opening graphics, which were not only crisp, professional, and striking, but near enough to Flames of War to offer “brand recognition” while at the same time establishing a unique look for the show.
The winter board is, of course, epic. I’m pretty sure I’ve seen it before, with the river “undercutting” the ice along the banks, a very nice touch.
I’ve been wanting to get into a decent ww2 game for a while. Been a coin toss between FoW and Bolt Action so far, so its always good to get a better look at either system.
Excellent vid guys.
Just starting flames of war. I have the rules and the Nuts book, just need the troops.
Keep up the good work, and more vids soon I hope.
Would Bolt Action work with FoW based troops ?
So good that this is back since I just got into FoW. 🙂
OMG!!! Hell yeah FOW FTW is back! Looking forward to another great season.
YUUUUUUUUSSSSSSS IT HAS RETURNED
Nice video. Glad to see one showing the rules for recon.
Great to see it (again) 🙂
Nice to have FoW FtW back.
Welcome back Dave. 🙂
I always enjoy watching BoW Flames of War For the Win – Warrens enthusiasm combined with Dave’s historical and tactical knowledge makes for a great show.
I think the ‘Revealing Ambush’ and ‘Disengage’ rules will be getting a good read through by a few players after this. 😉
Just as I’m wondering why FoW FTW hasn’t been posted in a while, this goes up. Great insight into FoW Recon! Dave, how would you suggest players effectively deal with Recon, or should we just ignore them and use the resources somewhere else?
Bolt action or flames of war… So tempting.
My favorite series returns.. Keep em coming.
Finally broke down and bough FoW starter set last week! FoW FTW was a big factor in this, though the game looked cool enough on it’s own. I really want to know more about different aspects of FoW, though, and Recce was one of the things I really wanted to learn. Awesome first vid (of the new season)!
great vid guys! I’m chuffed to see how that table scaled down so nicely! so many trees! I haven’t played FoW but I get the feeling recon is one of those aspects that is easily overlooked in a game.
What I really liked about the old FoW FTW was watching the guys play through full games. Those videos helped me soo much in learning the rules, the pacing, and tactics of FoW. Finding a full tabletop game of anything is nearly impossible to find on the internet, let alone FoW so I really appreciated the first season. This video was perfect too in that it showed the ‘real time’ affects of recce and how it operates.
Thanks again Warren and Dave!
FOW looks like good fun!
Fantastic to see Dave back – this is one of BOW’s best series/shows, and I love the exposition both of FOW and the historical snippets that Dave drops in here and there. Well worth watching.
Thank you guys !! It’s what i was looking for 🙂 good to see the dream team back online
Yay its back! I haven’t tried the game yet… nor purchased anything for it but have enjoyed watching these vids!
dave is back !!!
You should start each episode with more of the dubed hitler footage.
Glad to see FTW back up and running… Still trying to convince my historical gaming buddy to give in and buy some stuff so I have a reason to play.
Nice to see you guys back again with FoWFtW !
Btw its all true…in armoured recce companies you never get orders to defend anything !!!
Running away is always an option. 🙂
Usual orders are;
advance to contact….or
advance to contact and determine the enemies axis of advance….or
advance to contact and determine the enemies axis of advance and delay.
Good stuff fellas. And I reckon some of the uses of recon apply to Bolt Action.
liking the new format. having just started to rearm my soviets and recently discovered the potential scout platoons, there infiltration rule, seeing this video has made them a must take as revealing concealed Germans will allow me to pin them assault them and claim glorious victory for the soviet union!
Very I cool series really enjoyed the battle reports.
Dangerous dave is back in the game
I love this type off video and I hate it at the same time you watch the video and think that looks good I’ll need to get that then you think O crap I’m skint can’t get it.
So glad it’s back! Fun first episode – might need to rethink the FJ list I’m working on..
Ooh, and do I detect a Soviet-Finn battle in the making?
Awesome episode guys! Looking forward to you guys going into the details of Flames of War.
YES! The doctor is in…
…next video, now, please!
Nice explanation, glad I have some Italian recon units in my African army.
Wooo! Really glad this series is back, I really enjoy the Flames scale and system, I guy at my club is gonna give me a demo game soon, so I can see how I like playing it.
A very useful explanation. The declaration of war by the UK upon Finland was however a result of Finland seizing Eastern Karelia- until then, the UK was prepared to ignore Finland’s status as a Nazi ally, as it was recognised as being due to an unfortunate set of circumstances, but when Finland took land that had never been part of Finland, ie became an aggressor, well, principle demanded that the UK declare war.
Some people might disagree on the “never been part of” part, but let’s not get into that.
Britain declared war on Finland in December 1941 as response to Finland signing the Tri-Partite pact, which made Finland formally an ally of Germany. It had not been previously, despite strong pro-German leanings. That nice Mr. Ribbentropp had sold us off to the Russians and Germany would not help until they publicly changed their mind about the whole Russia thing.
The Continuation War started already in June 1941 and the Finnish counterattack swiftly pushed past the old borders. Why the Russians sparked it by bombing Finnish cities, who knows? Possibly a panic reaction to the German invasion.
Hmmmm, intriguing… I particularly enjoyed the Know Your Enemy segment. Maybe that can start creeping in to other game specific series?
Excellent vid, I particularly liked the Know Your Enemy segment!
Nice to see Dr.Who… erm… Dave again!
sadly my Canadian 3rd sits unpainted, but assembled! some inspiration to get them done for sure!
Good to see you guys again. Nice new format with indepth rule explanation and “Know your enemy”. Epic, epic gaming table. I want to see those red russian tanks dashing through the snow.
OOOOOHHHHH YEAH….. FOW FTW….. and a chance @ goodies too boot!!!! 🙂
Glad to see this series is back. 🙂
Cant wait for you guys to play Bolt Action!!! FoW is awesome too!
Excellent tutorial vid. I am looking forward to many more. I am especially interested in learning how to do (and counter) ambushes. Keep up the good work!
Excellent! More more more!
It’s always hard getting into a new game when you know that there are intricacies you have yet to learn. Enter Dave S., FTW!
Glad to see Dave and Warren together again playing the game that helped me find BoW. Great information and looking forward to the next one.
Great to have the show and Dave back.
Just an amazing looking board.
i would like to make tank noises :). Hopefully, it will be possible with the FOW open fire starter set 🙂
Finally one of the best shows is back on air! Perfect!!!
Thank you guys, this is a show i was missing, and good idea to explore tactics and unit type. Bravo Dave, I learned something today!
FoW FTW 2! Such a nice surprise! Can’t wait to see more episodes focused on strategy. 😛
Love the table, and FoW seems to be a good WWII game, I really should check it out at some point.
Good to see the return of Fow Ftw, and our resident Timelord – welcome back, guys!
Trying to get into BA right now, but desperately need to start on FoW, too … just need the funds …
Nice to see this video going out. I always enjoy more FoW content.
Nice to see FOW FTW back!
It’s the reason I fell for this game in the first place 🙂
Great to see FoWFTW back, its been hell waiting for the return, like after watching your favourite drama series season finale cliff hanger and having to wait for the new season to start.
Really liked the “Know your Enemy” segment, nice addition to the format.
Good stuff about Recce Units, I knew there was a reason I have Recce Patrol with Stuart VI Jalopy’s and a Scout Patrol of universal carriers 😉
Really looking forward to the rest of the series, now it has started!
great show glad to see it back
What a really inovative way of dealng with recon units. I like the disengage rules, they add realism and give the units survivability.
This table rly needs some russians on it :-D.
This game just keeps looking tempting. Watched the first series, without even playing the game.
Loving all the attention FoW is getting, perfect timing as I’m getting a lot of inspiration to start a WWII tabletop.
Wooo FOWFTW! Glad this is back 😀
Really good. Again it works really well. Especially looking into the important yet small parts of FoW
Great to see this back. I love all WW2 gaming
Fantastic to see the return of FOWFTW and of course the sartorialy elegant Dave. Really interesting to hear about recon units, I love units that control the battlefield as well as providing the standard options of shooting and assaulting…
Wonderful show. The informative overlays at all the key moments really help to keep everything clear. Looking forward to the second episode.
I really like the video brilliant video it is, but I don’t think a large board works for this explanation of the rules. If you had a 4 x 4 board then I feel the attention would definitely be focused on the miniatures and you would be able to see everything going on right on the table as it is explained. In this video you have to wait for the close up shots to come up before you see what you two are trying to explain. All I am saying is it would be better on a smaller rather than a big board although the Board you have used is mega cool I would love one like that myself. Great to see FOW for the win back again.
Keep up the vids guys they are cool.
Awesome work guys, I got into the game due to these vids so I’m thrilled to see you at it again.
Bring on the heavy armour! ;P
I think Warren’s ‘more stugs’ policy is a winning one, recon be damned!
I can safely say recon is now on my future lists… and more stugs! 😉
Stugs are never enough!
Back in the fields again!
I suspect the large board is for future episodes as they were probably all filmed at the same time when dave was over
I don’t know if it’s been done already, or if someone’s mentioned it, but I would love to watch a video of John and Dave just talking about the historical side of the game. I consider myself more well versed than the average person when it comes to WWII, but I learned from this video that Britain and Finland were technically at war until ’47, and that’s the sort of thing I would love to see more of!
Thanks so much for making these videos, I can’t wait to see the rest of this season!
Awesome
Great to see FoW FTW back for season 2.
These videos are the best way I’ve found to fully learn/understand the rules – thanks guys, more please!
Great to see the Dynamic Duo back in action…. Recce is a great topic…. When the U.S. Army Scouts exchanged their M113 Cheeseboxes for the “Tank-Killing” Bradleys,,,, in training exercises, they started dying en masse, where previously they would survive unscathed. It seems counter-intuitive that better armed and armoured elements would be more prone to failure….. This goes to explain why Stuart Jalopies and Sawn-off Daimlers prevailed…
FoW for FTW by far my favorite series on beast of war , hoping to pick up a starter set soon, Glory to the NachtWolfe !
Flames of War does seem interesting. Love your winter-themed battle board!
Yes more of detailed rule explanations.
btw: nice winter table.
Oh Joy! I don’t play much FoW but this series is to entertaining to miss.
Awesome, been waiting for this, biting nails and such. I love that you used different armies and units. The crash course on recon was great. Warren, remember to look at all the different recon units of different armies, some operate a bit different (like some allow the patrols in a platoon to operate as seperate units – much better spread and use for flushing out ambushes. Practice using the Eyes and Ears rule to help your Arty/Tanks/Infantry crush the enemy and pin them for the assault.
I love the Fins because they stuck it to the Soviets and they are experts at artic warfare. Warren, take a good look at them and consider them for your next tourney. If you go American then the Tank Destroyers are something always upsets those who think thier tanks are safe.
Great job guys, can’t wait for the next episode.
Hint the Finns are mine 😀 that might let people have some fun seeing where we are going with armies this time around
WOOT! Great to see the guys are back, great interview with Bill too would be great to see more of these. Cant wait for more guys!
Great Video Guys! As a relatively new person to Flames of War, this is exactly what I need! Well presented and enjoyable to watch. MORE please!
Finally! It’s nice to have FoW FTW and Dave back!
I’m learning the game with you guys and hope to get my first troops soon.
Nice to see Dave and Warren return with FoW FTW, session 2, ( it seems like a full year of withdrawal since the episode about terrain), great content and no doubt many will be then adding to their recon units, plus adding on.. roll the power 5. Question, does your opponents need to map the original positioned enemy units, thus allowing your recon to “find” their units of displeasure, or is this a gaming device to limit their location.??
Do you mean ambush??!
If so no the player can put them (within the rules set in ambush… More of that to come my friends) where ever on the table. Recon just adds another rule that limits this placing its a powerful game changer recon
wouhou … it’s so cool to see Dave back …
A awesome vid …
Great to see FOW FTW back!
Thanks guys, for improving the game everywhere. It’s not the most complicated game, but does have it’s secrets.
Good to get comments from the really good players.
Great to have flames of war (ww2) back on, hopefully we will see more rules covered like air , artillery, smoke and reserves
Great Episode! I have found a store more than a little bit away 🙁 that has a great FOW club. Looking at the starter set or just a couple of boxes to start a unit up so I can play a bit. Have to finish up my Bolt Action army up and then I will look at the FOW army list. The one thing I would really like is for all of these game books to be available for my Kindle, many of them are in PDF but it is a bit hit and miss.
I have been waiting so long for this.
Its an awesome combination of 2 great presenters and a great game system IMO.
I am oh so very happy it is back .
Keep up the great work guys!
Dave is back for vengeance! Can Dave finally beat Warren? Maybe the recon can help! I’m looking forward to see how Recon works I have never used it!
Another for the books
Brother G
Weeeeeee
Dave, you must crush Warren in this season!
once.. pwetty please *puppyeyes*
I really enjoyed this new video and im looking forward to more vids from fow season 2 !!
i like the way you are describing the game and how it works in detail – just give us more videos from epic fow battles 🙂
I am saving up money to buy me a starter set, might try to convert a friend of mine to historical wargaming using FoW.
Yay! I love this series, Dave is a cool dude.
Outstanding, these video’s are really helping me with the rules. Thanks BOW
Fow few is the reason I started playing flame of war
British rule
Sarry I ment to say fow ftw
I hope you guys make a lot of season and cool battles
Well, I’ve gotta get me some of those recce units.
Love these FoW FTW vids. Ive made the mistake of removing them from my Brit list and have regretted it ever since. Plan on adding it back very soon. Keep up the good of BoW!!!!!
Lovely video. Very informative
I think I should get some recon! 😀
