Before I watch I’m gonna guess at Soviet victory.
love BoW bat reps
Hold on to your lug-nuts . . . THIS WILL BE FREAKIN’ AWESOME!
Think @justin could not find his, but then again he never had a chance to.
great battle report
Man, those little German Helicopter are gonna be difficult to deal with.
Okay, I’m still watching this . . . but ARGGH! These choppers are meant to kill tanks. Justin! Shoot your Hinds at the TANKS. The reason these to-hot rolls are so tough (correctly so) against enemy aircraft is they’re not really designed to fight enemy aircraft. An AT-9 against a Leopard II is a good kill, and now you have 4 Leopards vs. 9 T-72s, better odds.
Just what I was thinking (about the Hind) and I’m not even an expert. Who knew a game site would be so educational.
just to be mean 😉 heading up this weekend to Co. Antrim so going over to play against the lads on Sunday WooHooo!!! sorry Jim just had to say it
@buggeroff – I see how you are. 😀 Belated best wishes for success in your games!
Go Germans , let’s win.
Looks cool
Don’t feel bad, my dice crap out on me turn 3 every time and that’s the turn that makes or brakes my games.
I might just be Russian to get this
Been waiting all week for this video.. Gotta do all the evening chores before I can settle down to watch this tonight with a nice cuppa tea… Excellent.. Ps this week has got my team yankee mojo all fired up…
Yes finally. Now we need at least one or two more bat reps
Nice to see how the game plays out.
It looks like the Soviets could almost play Napoleonics. Just make a gun battery and slowly advance while firing.
Great, love you’re battle reports.
No words necessary: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SndPb5XohYM
As a Soviet player I’m looking forward to tangling with some Leopards. @oriskany, too far for you to travel? 🙂
@benc – Well, I flew 4300 miles to play Team Yankee in the boot camp. If I get across that way again for Operation Zeus or some other BoW event, who knows? My Leopards might have to crack open some 120mm smoothbores . . . 😀 (once they get here and I build them, that is).
@oriskany If you make it over at some point then your Leopards are welcome to try 🙂
Justin was far to gungho, great battle report, liking the look of this game
Great game, relly enjoyed watching
love those Hinds
Just primed my french army (yes I know there are no rules yet). 7 AMX 30, 3 AMX 155mm GC, 17 Panhard APCs, 17 Infantry stand (1 small), 16 ML Teams, 4 HOT Tank Hunters, 1 Obs, 3 Trucks, 2 Jeeps, 4 Mirage and 4 Eurocopters (I know they weren’t around yet in 1985, but they look SO cool). And I’m sitting here thinking “HOW THE HELL SHOULD I PAINT ALL THIS.”
Suddenly a wild BOW TY batrep appears. Perfect timing! Let’s get out the brush and hit the paints.
where did you get the amx from want some for my spanish army
nice bat rep though I think a lot more could have been tactically.
Thanks for the report, was helpful to get a grasp of the rules.
What has struck me is how ‘fast’ this game is compared to FoW. Firstly how fast the tanks are (how they can move and shoot at full rate), how hard they hit, how fast the helicopters are. I can’t see too many static gun lines in this game!
This is going to make me dig out my WWIII fiction again…
Hmm, with unlimited movement of the Hinds, as Oriskany said above, fly all the way to the edge of the board, possibly behind the fuel/water tanks and shoot the tanks in the rear. Especially the command tank. Now the smaller German copters which couldn’t move and shoot, would have a poorer time doing that.
Do the Hinds, thinking about the one in the Rambo movie, have the ability to carry napalm?
before watching or reading any comments… man I hope germany crushes face!
yeay..leos!!!
Leopard tanks just look quite simply cool. I’ve never played any ‘modern’ wargames, but my Team Yankee tingles are a-buzzing with all this armour bombing around the table. Watching the helis fly over the tanks is cinematic, and just how wargames should be. You guys are so lucky to be playing this right now… Roll on the end of my shift at work so I can watch some more videos to get the saliva flowing.
Always great fun to see the game. Can’t wait to get some West Germans going.
I really, really, REALLY like what Phil says at 32:10. The problems with “real” scaling in miniature wargames, sort of required for “true line of sight” games, is always a problem for any game that takes place after 1900 or so. I have always railed about this, and finally someone has addressed it. 😀 Let alone WW3 tanks and vehicles, with ranges out to 2500 or 3000 meters (never mind rockets, missiles, or artillery which are even longer), means that a “true” LOS moderns game would have to be played out on tennis courts and golf courses. A great rules clarification, and a great bit of info behind by it is written that way. 😀
That’s the problem what I have with 28mm games. You fight at distances where both sides could easily throw stones and sticks at each other 😀
Even at 15mm it’s not really far and Phil made a good explanation for the abstraction thou.
I love those Leos!
Great bat rep gents!
Poor Justin, hope he will get lucky one day 😉
Best explaination of Soviet perseverance:
If you succeed, family holiday in Crimea. If you fail, family holiday in Siberea.
Definitely only shoot the helicopters at another helicopter if it is a desperate situation. Better to use them to take out the tanks.
Looks like a more accessible version of Flames of war. 🙂
Those germans are effcient
Yay tank crush
I learnt a valuable soviet tactic, biggest unit size possible st all times to soak up those shots and keep your hinds as far away from AA on tanks as possible whilst allowing you to fire your missiles. It worked pretty well in all the games I’ve played so far.
go go Germany!
What a destructive game…two turns and its over! Thats so fast compaired to ww2 fow!
Justin your worst tactic was to play John in a tank game…
Think I will have to watch this a couple of times for the gameplay to excite me, might just be the lack of modern wargaming though. The units though look great, but as I said on another post there is too many good games out there to keep up with.
Midweek and another great vídeo, need more hope more to come! Keep on guys!
I haven’t read any of the comments until i’ve absorbed the battle report. I go with the Germans – only because Leopards are hard as nails.
The leopards were really nasty taking pretty much everything the soviets threw at them except the hind helicopter.
Man that was brutal (as a Soviet player I’m definitely going to need a game plan for my battles). Great job with the battle report guys. I hope you get a bigger game and battle report in with more unit types and tactics (plus a few more turns couldn’t hurt either).
Flank flank go around the flanking flank!
And @oriskany is right about the Hinds. The AT doctrine was to come in and hammer the armor until pushed off or run off by the fast movers.
I would be interested to see another battle report as they get used to the rules and their armies.
Thanks @ghent99 – I think it’s great that both sides get helicopters, but if I were designing scenarios for this game, I would never have both sides deploy ground attack helicopters in the same battle. These are the kinds of assets that one side or the other deploys only when they have at least local air superiority. Now that might change from sector to sector (allowing both sides to use their helicopters in a given campaign), and it might even swing back and forth in the same sector from day to day or even hour to hour. But no commander is going to deploy these ground attack machines into an area in which they don’t have at least nominal control of the skies.
Basically this boils down to only one side per game should have helicopters IMHO. The other side can have tons of AA assets, a larger margin of tanks or infantry, or better artillery support, or whatever counterweight is required for game balance.
Please don’t get me wrong. I’m certainly NOT “knocking” Team Yankee. Played it at the boot camp and despite its FoW roots, I definitely liked it. These are not “dogfighting” machines, though. The fact that we saw a player try it and it DIDN’T work is one of the many things Team Yankee gets right.
Still not sure about those MG3s knocking down a Hind with 7.62mm NATO, though. It WAS a really lucky roll, though. I guess something went in an engine intake. 😀 Poor Justin can’t buy a break.
Would another Hind even up the points value? Also, I second the comments about using the Hinds to take out tanks. Perfect way to assassinate the command too.
The Leopard 1 has always been a favored piece of hardware in my book. I’ve had an RC one since 1980!
I’ve got the Team Yankee graphic novel and the two Third World War novels in my book collection too–and last year I played the game in demo sessions and want to build my own army real bad!
It’s decided, going to try this game.
Will make sure i watch this when i get home
Another awesome batrep. Thank BOW
Great game and report
Cool battle report, although quite a hammering! It’d be fun to see John and Justin have a rematch.
Well I understand that it is a game of two people totally new to this, but just a small hint.
Hinds have 20 inch range on their Spirals, so they can position for side shots (that auto pen Leopards) without any threat from AA MGs that have 16 inch range. By doing that, thay have a good chance of killing tank per turn without any risk.
I think @dignity learned it the hard way 😉
Allways like the BoW BatReps. Good camera angles no blurred pictures because of hand held cams. Lots of information and tactics.
nice game, seems though the russian has a bit of an advantage ( not points but tactical options)
Well done John, crush the communist menace!
Really interesting batrep. 🙂 Justin Justin Justin… shooting helos…
Nice battle report, really making me want to get another game in soon.
Posting before watching, Come on Russia, Win for the Motherland, URA!!!
Excellent video. So tempted now to get the game.
Good battle report ,gives a nice flavour of the rules
Great starter set
Great battle report and good to get an understanding of how helicopters work in the game
Cool game!
Now John and Justin need to switch forces and play again!
Great Bat Rep! I can’t wait to get my first game in!
It’s a shame it was a bit one sided though
I like your doing the armour save first. In terms of probability it doesn’t make any difference but penetrate armour then roll to damage makes a lot of sense.
Great battle report guy`s, never thought for one minute that the “West German`s” would not win. On the other hand if @justin had done a few thing`s differently he “May” of won, moving his “Hind`s” to where he did kept @john`s Pah Anti-Tank helicopter`s in the wood`s away from his tank`s, but in hind sight he should of tried to draw them out. As we saw John`s helicopter`s where not really needed, as his Leopard`s did a fine job in nearly taking them all out in one round. It would make for a really interesting replay, if John and Justin swapped side`s just to see what they would do differently.
Do like the rules they seem a bit simpler than FoW, cannot wait to see a battle report with support units added to it, to see how the rules fair.
Also should this been called the battle of the smoothbore’s, cannot wait for the rifled beast turns up 😉
You have to get into the side armour of the tougher NATO tanks, and then hope that a few of their tanks run off… and avoid their AA where possible of course.
good starting piont rules wise
Very interesting game, I expect to play soon with my friends 🙂
Awesome stuff
Very cool game, and it looks easy to play
Good battle report.
Really looking forward to getting my German force. I hope they are a match for my friends Afgansty
Come comrades time to crush the imperialist running dogs
Justin, that was a real cunning plan! (Yup!)
Very fun game, anyway, I have to test it as soon as I can.
Team Yankee, any chance to see a French “Char Leclerc” models? Very excited to see one on a table ^_^
we need more battle reports!!!!!!
Nice Vid
Very enjoyable to watch, and interesting strategies and pitfalls to take into account for my own games!
Good effort John. Commiserations comrade Justin.
Stella start from Juztin! did make me chuckle as his plans collapsed!!
Really liked how Phil added additional layers of rules with increasing turn number.
molto interessante.
A lot of good information in this report
Take that commies! The game looks fun.
I can’t wait to get some of these minis. Choppers man ! Gun ships , attack helicopters what ever you want to call them , I want them all !!!!!!
This battle just seemed so deadly and fast. Modern technology seems to lead to shorter, sharper, fights.
Aand that’s a win for Germany.
Commenting to win, good luck all.
West Germans all the way
Kinda want the Soviet box so I want them to win
There seem to be a lot of tactical decisions which need consideration in this game. Even just knowing the technical abilities of the vehicles is important.
kinda saw this coming
good battlereport, but a bit unfair the russian force only have 44 points if I’m counting right, the germans on the other side habe only in the leos 55 point + 8 for the PAH. But nice to see how the rules are applied.
Nice bat rep. Shows that the starter forces are somewhat limited though.
Good game. Will be very familiar to FoW players but different enough to get the character of the era.
Great batrep. Played my first games of TY last weekend. Awesome and utter carnage on the battlefield. Did take out a Soviet flight of 2 Hinds with AA from my M109s. Love this game.
great battle report guys.
Can’t wait to have my Russian starter set and my West Germans all nicely painted and do some demo games with my friends
Okay I might be reading too much into this, or it might been answer already but Phil did say “when you see old tech” in reference to stabilisers. Does this mean we’ll be seeing the Soviet Bloc allies with T55s after the Brits and if so does that mean a plastic T55 kit for Team Yankee, Arab Israeli and Vietnam could be in the works?
Hmm. Just a thought.
WHAT CAN I SAY..JUSTIN YOU ARE WASTED ON THERE MATE….”GET YOUR COMMENTS IN AND YOU CAN WIN”….you are a shopping channel natural, you are a poet and you don’t know it.
Team Yankee coverage, just brill guys really got me interested in starting an moblie battalion force for it….now where is my old bin lid and my bloody gun!!
Justin you should set up an ambush with your tanks mate has you outnumbered him, then split his force with your hinds and try to send the split forces into the ambushs.
Great bat rep guys!!
Well caved in this morning and just bought into Team Yankee West Germans. 🙂
Went for a box each of the Marder Zug and Gepards, along with 2 packs each of Panzergrenadiers and Fliegerfaust (still of course hoping that like in Yahtzee will stand a chance of rolling 5 x 6’s and win a great starter set – LOL).
I can see that infantry could end up playing a vital defencive role as my experience and tactics progress.
Now to start thinking about putting together a Soviet force. Hmmm, choices, choices. 🙂
Great report
Nice report
