Team Yankee Leopard Week – Planning A Campaign With Red Storm Rising
July 20, 2016 by dignity
We plan a campaign based in Iceland for Battlefront's Team Yankee by using the book Red Storm Rising as inspiration. It's time to get those West Germans into the narrative.
Follow Team Yankee Leopard Week
Iceland is certainly an interesting battlefield to consider; I wonder how it might work?

Red Storm Rising is such a classic cold war book. If you haven’t read it you should.
I really like that. I endorse this message
Good campaign system always a good thing
this is such a great idea!
Aaaaaaaaaand I get my wish. WOOT, I say.
Don’t forget one of the missions will be having to take the the US. air force base at Keflavick.
Sounds very good. I have to convince someone to try this out.
Just make sure there’s a chance of a volcano erupting!
An invasion of Iceland should include 2 special characters, Cpt P Andre and Lt K Katona
No? I’ll get my coat…
groan 😉
lol 🙂
Really liking the idea of a beach landing. Going to tweak this from Iceland to Denmark though.
A quick google search reveals a few possible models capable of standing in for Russian landing vehicles…

Iv’e decided to give this one a go:

When it’s built up I will post some pics and let you guys know how it compares for scale.
Sounds like a fun campaign, can’t wait to give it a try.
Cool project! A combined US/UK task force thrown together in no time to confront the situation could be a nice idea. Elements from the 10th US Mountain Division and maybe elements from the British Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre, supported by M1s and Challengers and whatever they can commandeer, borrow or steal. I like it! Not to mention SAS, SBS and SEALs.
Got to say I love the look of the German wheeled vehicles.
This looks awesome fun to game… Like the “taking the airport would make Iceland into an unsinkable aircraft carrier” fantastic imagery, I can imagine hordes of Soviets storming the main runway and passenger planes desperately trying to take off. Glory points and bragging rights of you manage to get more than 5 away. And everyone likes a free download!
Looks good so far and how about general links. Such the winner could choose to rush to the next target. So he must use his remaining forces and replacements are harder to get and are always delayed. The opponent get fewer minefields, no ambushes and delayed reserves as well.
Intersting scenario and I might get winter camo ;P
I really like the campaign idea and thanks for the pdf. I definitely need to go back and read Red Storm Rising, I haven’t read it in years. Also a friend of mine who runs the Team Yankee Tornado Alley (Oklahoma and Kansas area) facebook page has been running a Fulda gap campaign for the last few months, it might be worth checking out.

Also Phil, I know that New Zealand seemingly has plans to take over Iceland, but I think you guys should be more worried about the planned invasion of your country. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RenRILqwhJs
Keep up the great videos this week.
What bonuses or penalties can there be for winning/losing a scenario? Particular units? Points?
Keep him there guy you getting some great ideas going
Just started to listen to the online audio book Red Storm Rising. 🙂
Also Phil and team (and anybody else who would like to give an opinion) – Really like the look of Team Yankee but not played FoW so interested in advice as to where I should start, would it be best to go through the FoW WWII books to start off? Is there any online resources you would suggest I join, etc.?
Any help much appreciated.
I don’t know if this can fit into a campaign, but here’s an idea:
During the Falklands invasion the British had planned to use helicopters to move infantry across the island, but the ship carrying the helicopters was hit with an anti-ship missile, forcing the British to have to walk. I like the idea that events outside the campaign affect a change in plans.
Fools!
The first step in taking Britain is depleting their tea supply!
Start with China instead.
free stuff, excellent. Thanks guys
Nice campaign, great to see more free downloads, things like this will really help the game.
Cool idea for a campaign. Found a nice gallery of Iceland on NatGeo

and another at

You’re gonna need a lot of coloured flocks for a board, that would be awesome to see though.
I like the idea for this campaign, but I’m wondering how the USSR would get to Iceland in the first place. Wouldn’t they have to conquer Western Europe or Scandinavia before, or is there a sneaky way around?
Excellent ideas!
It looks like this campaign will be really fun to play!
Woa that sounds cool, now i’ll download the file and look at this!
On game 2 or 3 Interdiction Raids from Burning Empires should be added more of a intelligence aspect to the game.
Never really played a campaign in any of the games i play.
I’ll admit, I prefer the idea of a free-form map campaign to a tree campaign, but sadly map campaigns can easily become a whole lot more complicated, so trees are probably the better introduction to campaigning.
Nice campaign idea, could easily use this as a template for a Chinese invasion of Tiawan or a US invasion of Cuba.
Actually liked TY @ 6mm.. 15mm.. not so much. Gonna see if I can’t get a coupla guys from the club to start this campaign in 6mm.
This website is worth a look; http://www.militaryfactory.com/smallarms/guns-1980-1989.asp
It covers small arms of most major countries from 1980-1989
I can really see this style of campaign taking place in Scandinavia. Or a desert war around the Suez and Mediterranean.
You could also employ ocunterespionage where you give false information
Interesting idea! Always love those free campaigns that Battlefront comes up with. We have played the Normandy campaign for WW2 that one genius iceland dude came up with…hopefully he will look into the Pacific soon too.
Got to take control of the main airport before the capital. Restrict the resupply routes. If you are the attacker and achieve this you could inflict say a 5 – 10 point loss on the defender and conversely if the defender wins he gains between 5 & 10 points worth of resupply.
How about getting submarines and Destroyers in to the game in some way?
If there is enough campaign love from the community perhaps there could be something arranged like “Battle for Xilos”; maybe coinciding with a major faction/theatre release (China!).
Lets not forget the Assault amphibious vehicle AAV-P7/A1, though the more modern up-armored version is late 80’s
Love the idea of a game including a good campaign, and I like the idea of playing this game in almost any location. Will look to get into this game I think.
A campaign game definitely has a different “feel” than a normal game.
Awesome ideas
Love the idea of a fight over Iceland, thanks guys.
Great idea and free
Sounds really cool, I might revert these ideas for a WW2 campaign 🙂
Already playing FoW ww2.. Would love to try Team Yankee 🙂
Loving the idea of Iceland being invaded, and the west German`s coming to there aid. This is gonna make for some very interesting game`s.
@fabione mentioned the SAS – SBS and SEAL`s, you could say that 24 hour`s before a couple of unit`s where deployed in advance of the main invasion. There job is to get “Intel” on enemy unit`s and where these enemy unit`s are deployed. This would give the West German`s a head`s up on where best to land and gain a quick foothold, with minimal fighting and giving them the time to form there bridgehead.
Then it`s time to kick some “Red” arse.
Many thanks for posting the campaign guys, great idea and will hopefully get some more people playing!
How about a mission where the Attackers have to take a military base. The Russians took over a local one and is using it for a forward resupply station. Or the Locals still hold it and the Russians want it.
I had to buy a second copy of the novel because my brother stole mine.
Who’s up for an Attitude Check? 😉
This is a great idea! I had forgotten about that book! This will make a great campaign!
Respectfully,
Gunny
Awesome stuff
Also would like to agree with the Red Storm Rising praise, excellent book.
Already downloaded… Swedes to the rescue.
I’m going to need to get my stuff painted now, so I can join in on this.
Actually been playing more campaigns lately in my games. Far more interested in the games now than when it was just the random scenario or table set up
Very interesting ideas! I can just see the enthusiasm you each have, and it’s really infectious 🙂
this make me think of a mid 80s look at a Cuba/ Banana Republic island attack. Obviously Grenada (Heart Break Ridge movie) comes to mind and it will be interesting to see how the Marines would take on older Soviet equipment.
Also, Larry Bond’s novels like Red Phoenix dealing with the Korean Peninsula would be fun.
Scenario based gaming is where it’s at for me these days. I still play pick up points based games but the narrative is where the most fun is to be had IMO.. I’m really thinking about putting on a 100pts team Yankee demo/participation game at my clubs annual show next year.. Desert themed table for sure.. Just gotta come up with a suitable scenerio now..
Great brain storm between you all there.. Some good ideas too I like the sideboard idea that could work really well for an ongoing campaign spread over a few weeks
cool
I wonder how much time planning can actually take.
All of this coverage has me so excited about this game. When the week was announced a few weekends back, i went online and ordered some soviets and yanks. I probably have to have a few West Germans as well!
Commenting to win, good luck all.
This is a very useful download. The ideas can also be adapted for other systems such as Dust, alternative WW2 and various sci fi games.
All we need is the team from Stripes to roll in!
when are you guys going to do a bootcamp for this???
Maybe make the final mission an either/or based on the success of the attack?
Could either have the NATO force trying to push the soviets out of the city with their remaining forces, or a soviet retreat to the sea? Flames of War had some interesting retreat/hold line type missions that could be adjusted.
Great week though, makes me want to get some Team Yankee stuff even more. Must get my British paras done for a club game before I do anything else though lol.
Hey guys! I was thinking about a series of missions with some optional missions, a campaign where the invader force would have some options, not a single path. My goal here would take the capital, although they say the end goal is the airport, I placed it as a side mission, or maybe one you could choose to before or after the other missions
The core of your army would be reinforced to full strenght after each game (perhaps with a change in veterancy depending on your results, ie, major victory your regulars become vets, major loss your vets become regulars, or so), but your support units would have to be “rebought”, using a limited number of resources points
1 (optional) – Special forces (infantry only) attack to disrupt comms, or something like that – if the attacker is successful, he gets some bonus on the landing, if not, the defenders figure out something is going on and have more defenses on the landings. If the attacker chooses not to do this mission, defender forces are in-between
2- The landing
3- Holding the beach head from a counter attack
4/5 – (both optional, played in any order if chosen to) – capture of key facilities (port and airport). If the port is captured, extra armor/arty/support is landed for the next missions; if airport is taken, extra choppers/airplanes/airborne troops can be used. Each mission done means the defenders have more time to prepare the defenses of the capital, thus receiving some bonus for the last missions
6- Outskirts of capital
7- Downtown capital
What do you guys think?
Also, I someone on yt mentioned mud/ice
I’ve been there during the summer, it’s pretty dry, roads are good and country is dry. During winter it has a lot of snow, you go slower, but you can go off road, during spring, when the ice is melting, it floods a lot of camps and plains, making off roading really hard. Maybe this could be attached as a follow-up campaign, so after the first campaign, depending on how long it took, it would affect the weather on this one. For instance, if it was a series of major victories for the soviets, the NATO guys would be fighting in spring, restricting their movement to major roads/beach invasions; if NATO had a streak of major victories, they would fight in the summer, with unrestricted movement. If there was a lot of atriction, this would be fought during the winter, with long nights, restricted movement, restricted air support for both sides. Just a couple of ideas
Great work there chaps
This is awesome. I love campaigns. Thank you a campaign so early in the development of this game.
Red Storm Rising is one of my Favorite Books. Now that BF has modern models the sky is the limit. Coyle, Clancy, let’s not forget Larry Bond and Red Phoenix.
As to Red Storm the idea of an air head as opposed to a beach head works just fine. Go with vertical envelopment with an air strip as your initial goal. Once the air strip is secure follow on forces are available to the attacker. This concept also opens up new model possibilities as well. Most countries have airborne or special forces. The US even had a light tank the Sheridan that was air mobile. For Amphibious operations you have the entire US Marine Corps. I would love to get some LVPT7s in 15mm(aka AMTRACs). Team Yankee is definitely just a starting point for a much broader area of operation.
You could use the airborne rules from earlier FOW books for landing the 82nd ABN Div or Soviet Spetsnaz.
