@sundancer well done for getting your space organised.  I’m sure your mojo will be back again soon now the state of the space isn’t intrusive on your thinking.

What kind of order do you guys use ?

@limburger I keep my stuff organised into the three main areas I game; sci-fi, fantasy and historical.  Each category sub-divides into the main groups of my collection so Fantasy divides into LotR, Warhammer and RPG.  Within those groups I then go by individual army so LotR breaks down into Gondor, Rohan, Isengard, Mordor and Free Peoples.  I make no distinction between painted and unpainted stuff, so an army which isn’t finished has both next to each other.  I do try to get stuff out of any boxes and built when it arrives because my storage is set up to store built miniatures.

I’m mid-move so all of my stuff is in Really Useful boxes.  They are great, but even if I have stuff in sensible groups in the boxes and the boxes stacked in an order, the one I want is almost always at the bottom of the stack 😀  The bigger ones are also the only successful solution I’ve ever found for storing terrain.

When I had my room set up I used a pair of architects plan chests.  They have A1 sized drawers that are deep enough to take a 28mm cavalry figure standing up.  I was therefore able to lay out armies in units in the drawers.  Each drawer could take two or three armies or 5 to 6 skirmish forces.    They are great because you can see and get to so much stuff so easily.  Only drawback is that vehicles don’t fit so I keep those in the really useful boxes or on display.
