September 5, 2018 at 12:46 pm #1262773The postman has just dropped by the office. Thanks for my cool prize, BoW and Rubicon!
September 5, 2018 at 1:19 pm #1262782I have been working on Eomer for MESBG. Got the base to finish as yet but I’ll do that at the same time as the riders I’m working on. A nice mini for it’s age.
September 5, 2018 at 2:01 pm #1262815Finished up the last of the monsters commission last night. A centaur and minotaur.

September 5, 2018 at 4:41 pm #1262877I think I have these LRDG / SAS 28mm Warlord figures finally ready for pre-shipment to the Boot Camp. 😀
Added some additional elements to the bases, rimmed the bases again in brown, added a little more wash and dry brushing, added insignia, wristwatches, and a few other small details, also experimented with small accents of sand on the LRDG vehicles.
Project:

September 5, 2018 at 7:19 pm #1262936Turns out the Rubicon “Pak 40 AT Gun with Crew” above doesn’t come with a base but has lots of parts that need a shared base. Anyone worked with this sort of thing before and can suggest a base size/shape? I’ve not really done much 1/56 / 28mm scale WWII stuff before so I’ve no idea how big this is going to be. I’d like to have the base in hand before I start assembly.
September 5, 2018 at 7:54 pm #1262937Good afternoon @lawnor –
Okay, the PaK40 7.5 cm antitank gun has a listed length of 6.2 m (20 ft 4 in). At 1/56 this would be 4.4 inches from the front of the muzzle of the gun to the back of the bracing spades. The gun is about 7 feet wide (1.5 inches), but I’m almost positive that is only the gun shield and wheel base. When deployed, those two bracing spades spread out behind the gun much more.So if I had to guess, and I would err on a the side of a BIGGER base as this gun historically had a crew of 6 (I don’t know how many figures come with the kit) … plus players usually like to have ammo crates, shell casings, engineering tools, etc …
September 5, 2018 at 9:12 pm #1262958Thats impressive, @oriskany . Derived from first principles from the real gun. Thank you. This kit comes with a crew of 6 and some ammo crates. Here’s a pic from the back of the box. The gun looks like its only half of the base, but it might just all be spread out for ease of view.
September 5, 2018 at 10:29 pm #1262973Oh God, yes. If you wanted to build it like they have it pictured, and keep it all on one base, the “tail” back end of that base would extend back waaay further than 5-6″.
September 5, 2018 at 11:29 pm #1262977Yeah. An extra few inches might be an idea. I don’t think that layout makes the best use of the space though.
September 6, 2018 at 2:32 am #1263003Well, historically and tactically, the idea is to spread out a gun crew’s men and ammunition a little to mitigate their vulnerability to enemy fire or accident. They are handling explosives under stress, after all. So the photo on the back of your box is probably pretty close to what I’ve seen in most wartime photos and footage of medium-gauge antitank guns. The men almost form a line working backwards from the firing point to make it easier to bring up new units for fire when the lorry / caisson comes rolling by, so that loads of explosives in soft-skin (or even horse-drawn) vehicles are not parked right next to guns that the enemy is targeting, or at the very least, is sporting a hot breech at the moment.
But you’re right, that doesn’t make the best use of space on the base, though.
Honestly I would consider not even using a base for all those elements. But seriously, I have never worked with, built, painted, or even played with 28mm artillery on the table. When it comes to the practical aspects of this piece as a gaming miniature, I am the probably worst person to ask.
