Welcome back to another tips and tricks video for Flames of War. Today the guys are getting to grips with just how devastating the rules for units loaded up with flamethrowers can be when you know the tactics behind them.
Yes they do. As they said you don’t reduce your ROF when moving with flame throwers. I believe the Churchill Crocodile has a ROF of 5. Which is absolutely insane.
Flamethrowers! Why does it have to be Flamethrowers…hate those things. I think some people use them too much. I know they are expensive, but come on they were not used to the extent some use them in the game. It is good to hit them hard and fast from a distance. Don’t let them get in close.
Seeing comments like this raises the question of how much fun they are to play against.
In Bolt Action it’s not so bad because they’re separate units (at least in the British lists) so can be targeted. Vehicle-based flamethrowers not so much.
Actually the Soviets can take a Flamethrower in the Engineer unit (in body armour if you like!) in Bolt Action. You’d need a 6 followed by a 6 to kill him, or a sniper. Mine always runs out of fuel after one shot anyway.
Putting 12 flamethrowers on the board sounds spectacular. But from a gaming perspective I would probably prefer to attach one or two of them to each unit I intend to get into combat.
They’re far too expensive to be considered really, certainly not all 12! I’d probably take 1 or 2 at most (and ensure they were in an infiltrating unit).
Great video very helpful. It is making me rethink the army I want to play. I want to play Germans and at the moment I only have 2 stug g assault guns the open fire set will really help start the hobby.
Play FoW Great War Germans if you like flame. Their company HQ has up to 3 flamethrower teams for you to attach out to the infanterie platoons and Stoss platoons have flamethrowers already embedded in them 🙂
Thanks for all the videos you guys do on this game. I hope to get into it once i get the money and time and these videos will defiantly give me a leg up on understanding this game.
I have a question Warren. When you were playing with your King Tiger in your torne list, did you ever roll for your tiger ace skills? I was just curious as I remember you playing with one and I never heard you say about it x). Maybe its just my mind playing tricks on me. But again good video chaps. Making me actually think how to squeeze some Falschrimjager pioneers into my 6th Devil’s Brigade list
Rules question. How does removing flame-thrower stands after they have fired affect calculating when a platoon morale check is made? Are the flame-thrower units counted as lost or are they ignored? For example. Say a six stand pioneer platoon with two flame-thrower stands shoots the flame-throwers in the shooting phase pinning the target platoon. The flame-thrower stands are removed at some point (end of shooting phase, end of turn?). The pioneer platoon then assaults the target platoon. At the end of the assault, the Pioneer platoon won, but lost two stands. Is the platoon required to take a morale check because only two of six stands remain or is the ratio of remaining stands to lost stands two to two with the flamethrower stands being ignored. This would result in platoon losses not being greater than 50%, avoiding a platoon morale check.
1. Flamethrowers are removed immediately after they fired, so before the end of the shooting step.
2. They do not count as destroyed or as part of the platoon after they fired. To my understanding this means that in your example you wouldn’t have to make a platoon morale check because 2 of 4 teams are still alive and thus the platoon is not under half strength.
Thanks for answering my question on flamethrower units being removed and how they affect platoon morale checks. Your explanation makes sense. Thanks again.
good info and a great series. I have never played FOW as I am with Warren on the whole historical slant..but I am interested in playing and have some friends here that do. Going to give it a go in a couple of weeks.
Count me In!
Thanks for the help guys
The 12 Soviet Flame-throwers must combat attach. This would ensure that a whole unit doesn’t just evaporate after firing.
Oh, and they’d cost 540 points!
This.
Combat attaching also allows those bad boys to cover more ground, meaning less wasted shots (those suckers are expensive).
I wonder, does vehicles that mount flamethrowers get more than 1 shot? If not, wouldnt that make the flame tanks a bit limited?
Yes they do. As they said you don’t reduce your ROF when moving with flame throwers. I believe the Churchill Crocodile has a ROF of 5. Which is absolutely insane.
What a flame hot show guys!!!
Rulebook out and following along. Really enjoying all the options being covered. A must to get into the finer points of FOW.
Great show again!
Feuer Frei
Awesome show guys, as usual!!
Could you guys make a battle report in which you use these tactics?
That would put them in a clear game context as well as a better tactical appreciation over the board.

Not tried anything historical yet but tempted
Great episode as always guys.
I just wish you had covered the flame thrower tank /APC options in a bit more detail though.
Are you doing another episode for flame throwing vehicles perchance?

The 12 Flamethrower unit MUST be combat attached.
They’re far too expensive to be considered really, certainly not all 12! I’d probably take 1 or 2 at most (and ensure they were in an infiltrating unit).
Maybe it s time to get some flamethrowers…

Count me into the competition! Thanks.
Another excellent vid, keep them coming.
When are we going to see new battle reports.
Tip top, top tipage. Flamethrowers ay, will have to get them a go.
ready for some more battle report goodness
Awesome. Thanks guys. Very helpful
These vids are great, really give you a feel for the intricacies of the game
This is such a mainstay game, I’ve considered it many times, what kind of scale are the conflicts normally? Battalions? Companies? Platoons? Squads?
Mainly company level engagements, with on average 5-7 platoons although this varies depending on your list.
Wow. Flame throwers! Potent!
This game looks really cool! It’s a shame noone plays it here :/
Burn baby burn!!!! Love flamethrowers very effective unit if used correctly. As always great show guys. Keep up the great work!
It’s a shame that I not run flametrower in my games!
FoW is also still kinda new in my area, would be interesting to start a community here..
Nice vid guys! 😀
Nice series… Could you do an episode about transport?
This video has made me even more confused on the topic of whether to buy BOLT or FOW. Well I will comment here and maybe win the box 😉
Looks like a interesting unit.
I really want to get into this game!

Well, I guess it’s really time to make hole on my list for some flamethrouwers. It would be strategically interesting.
So once used does the flamethrowers turn into rifles?
Yes another one! What will come next? 🙂
I really would like a starter set to get into this so consider me in if I can get a good job to afford it it looks cool
i like the British wasp as it’s a sneaky way to get flame throwers in to a list. and they just look cool to.
Thanks guys
The terrain and tables BoW has made for FoW is what brought me into the game.
Beast of war are one of the best channels on youtube!!, for sure one of the funniest
I think I might be catching the “Flames of War” bug just from watching you guys.
I would love to see a battle report of a team game,
John and Warren vs Dave (the Timelord) and Lloyd.
I think it would be a good mix of knowledge and enthusiasm.
maybe
Dave and John Vs LLoyd and Warren
Knowledge Vs Enthusiasm
Tactics Vs Gung Ho!! Do or Die!! Chaaarge!!

Great show!
thanks guys for these videos, they’re really helping me understand the game more as I’m still getting started with FOW
Cool.

Another great video guys! Now to find someone to play FoW with!!!
Nice video! I like to see you guys delve deep in the game!
