Head Into The Barrows For The Three Trials In LotR Card Game
July 25, 2014 by brennon
Fantasy Flight Games announce the release of The Three Trials, a new adventure pack for The Lord of the Rings: The Card Game. This time you'll be delving into the barrows of Dunland to face wights and more challenges in a very replayable adventure...
The trials will be both an interesting martial challenge and one that involves interesting decision making too. Each time you undertake the adventure you'll be facing a different Wight, a different Barrow and looking for a new key. It sounds like an intense fight and something that will provide even more of a challenge. Saying that, the actual Lord of the Rings base game is quite challenging as it is!
Of course if you're going to be fighting against some new enemies you're going to need new heroes and allies to help you. Idraen seems insanely useful for a quest which involves a lot of locations. See what you think of some of the enemies too...
Each of the different Guardians have got a Time effect which will count down and do something dangerous to your party of adventurers. They all seem terrifyingly dangerous and that's without them being a Nightmare deck either! This game is not for the faint of heart that's for sure.
Will you pick up The Three Trials?

We were just talking about this game last night when we visited our FLGS. It looks interesting and I like the cooperative play and even solo play if need be. We might just order this one as it will be something the young ones are interested in.
The base game is incredibly replayable with so many different combinations. You have four different spheres of influence and a number of quests/adventures to undertake that have an increasing difficulty level.
It’s a decidedly a co-operative experience and really good to play alongside younger gamers I’ve found. You give them the ‘Tactics’ deck so they can smash up trolls, orcs, goblins and the like and they have a whale of a time. Saying that I know Youtuber, Rodney Smith of Watch it Played, who plays with his young son and on more than one occasion I think he’s even been better at playing it and seeing all the connections than his Dad.
Twin that with all the extra adventure packs that give you a whole host of different quests to undertake, new heroes, new enemies and a whole lot more customisation and you have a very, very good game with plenty of challenge.
It’s even a solo experience as well and the game scales well for that. You ‘can’ play it with four players – and we’ve done so in our group – but you’ll need another two dials (we use the ones from Blood Bowl Team Manager – another good game) – so you can record threat points.
I’m on the edge of picking up the big Khazad-Dum expansion which delves into Moria and supplies me with more Dwarves to join my existing deck 🙂
Im also at the end of the mirkwood cycle and looking to pick up Khazad-Dum expansion. Its a great game for me and the wife to play.
Have 3 of the Mirkwood APs atm but not played any.
Already have Khazad-Dum. Picked up the AP with Dain who is a must for a thematic Dwarf deck to delve into Moria.
A dwarf synergy deck is great fun, am sure you will really enjoy Khazad-Dum, @brennon and @arcade81
As I said below, get the Return to Mirkwood Adventure Pack for Dain if you haven’t already.
He is awesome to run with lots of other dwarves.
I Play solo mostly and like thematic decks, and when my daughter visits really enjoy the two handed mode.
The dwarves are in 2 decks atm for our continuing adventures in Khazad-Dum.
Just need to sort out another deck so I can solo the Mirkwood Cycle.
My biggest problem with the game is not getting into deck building which I struggle to get motivated for.
I will try and develop a Rohan deck and a Sylvan deck for which the more recent APs look really amazing.
The Three Trials looks cool. Should be reviewed online fairly soon for a better look
From Cardboard of the Rings’s Facebook page:
Sean and Brandn just brought down the hammer on The Three Trials and *spoiler alert* IT WAS AWESOME! Get this AP! So fun, so much replayability!! (P.S. Tactics Boromir is still legit awesome.)
Is looking like a must get
