Games Workshop Preview Necromunda At NOVA Open
August 31, 2017 by brennon
Games Workshop is at the NOVA Open right now and shared some news on the return of Necromunda as well as making the game available to play at the event.
The game will come with two gangs in the box, House Escher & House Goliath, as they fight for control of the Underhive in brutal gang warfare. It also looks like they've adopted a tile-based layout for your game boards as you can see in the image below showing off what comes in the set.
The tile-based layout for the game with its bulkheads and walkways is meant to make the game portable and easy to set up. Of course, there's no reason why you couldn't add in some of the 3D terrain that Games Workshop make, and in fact, they encourage it, but at its base level, the game looks to have been designed with the idea of close quarter fighting in mind in dark alleys.
Rules for both versions of the game will be presented so it's a simple matter of classic over reboot for you to decide upon from the rulebook.
The Houses
Leading the fight we have House Escher...
...who are the nimbler of the two factions and as you can see feature a lot of awesome looking female miniatures. They have plenty of chemical weapons at their disposal and draw on more esoteric designs and aesthetics.
This is then in contrast to the big and hulking House Goliath who are clanking around with repurposed industrial equipment as their weapons of choice.
I think of the two gangs I like House Escher the most although I think that there might be quite a few fights to have them as the House of choice when it comes to sharing the box. I suppose the solution is to not share!
Gang progression and expansion is also returning so watch this space for more on that front.
Are you excited for the games return?

GW cares not for your industry trends towards realistic proportions. Moar steroids! lol
I did laugh at what you said, but if you’re the leader of an industry why follow the herd when you can hear the siren song of 80’s punk rock manga?
House Goliath screams Mad Max more than ever before. I actually quite like the comic book feel if these models, which is weird because I am not a fan of comics
To be fair, these guys are more ‘true scale’ than the Goliaths from the ’90s were.
Having two sets of rules right out of the box is a really smart move. And it warms my heart to see my beloved templates still in use!
I wonder by “classic” do they mean unchanged? I’m hoping it still has the depth of the old ruleset.
The different rules are most likely going to be options to play this game on tiles or table top scenery, and playing the game as a one off thing or a campaign.
“Classic” is only used when they are talking about what the game was, and how they want to achieve the same feeling.
It’s not going to use the 2nd edition rules; it’s going to be based on 8th, which lets be honest, makes sense.
It would be nice if the new rules were good, but if not, then you’ve still got the option to use the old ones (which have been revised / balanced over the years) that can be downloaded for free.
Can’t wait to see what the other gangs look like; I ran a huge Cawdor back in the day (thanks to 4 Settlements that allowed me to churn out a lot of fodder).
That’s how I understand it. One version for fighting in tunnels and one for fighting on multi-level terrain. Although I do wonder why that requires two sets of rules and not just a few different sub-secions in a single book. I wonder if it’s just bad wording and there is actually only one set of rules covering two slightly different ways of setting up tables
I can almost undrestand why the weird proportions: toxic waste, radiation, etc… They look awful even so, the execution is just not great.
The music of the video is great, nevertheless xD
I’m going to have to disagree there. They look great, very over the top yes, but I think more than 40k, this game is supposed to that comic book/graphic novel look to it and the Goliath Models certainly achieve that
yeah, I am a fan – really ‘Fist of the North Star’ anime styling, a mild charicature that I am 100% sure will be a joy to paint!
Hmmmm…strange accents on Necromunda….part cockney, part Essex, part New Zealand with a smidgeon of Northern Irish thrown in.
Game looks good – liking the Mad Max Thunderdome-esk feel to the minis.
I blame Gangs of New York! – Oirish accents 🙂
Games workshop….Just thieves !!!! Giggles
always worth a look when GW reboot one of the classics. hope they get the rules right for this much loved game. house Escher are certainly the better looking of the two for my tastes.
Really looking forward to this. All the mini’s are great looking, as you would expect, the Goliath gangers look way better than their 90’s counterparts, 40k era steroids are bound to have all sorts of stuff in them for the discerning ganger to get the biggest muscles.
Looks really great. I will definitely be checking it out.
I’m not sure about the complaints about steroids; is that due to the House Goliath models? That’s their schtick. It’s suppose to be over the top, especially when you take into account what influenced Necromunda in the first place both in its tone and art style.
I think it all looks a vast improvement over the original models; the Esher gang look amazing to me.
A slight shame we didn’t get a re-imagining of the old scenery (there was something special about having a big box full of cardboard) but not the end of the world. We’re not short on options of where to get that kind of stuff.
Who’s complaining about steroids? Moar steroids!
everyone is welcome in the church of gains?
Not me! I will taking a look at this when it hits the states. Also moar mohawks!
The re-imagining of the scenery is the Sector Mechanicum kits introduced in Shadow Wars but that are now available as separate kits. Or alternatively you could go for a Zone Mortalis set if you’re feeling flush.
My personal advice to anyone looking to get terrain for this would probably be the Mantic Battle Zones kits. You could go for HDF/MDF however the mantic stuff being plastic is slightly easier to assemble and paint. I have found HDF/MDF tends to require more prep and is harder to glue(poly cement for the win)
Nice Games Workshop very nice :).
Necromunda is my favourite miniatures game of all time. I still play the original, well the community updated ruleset anyway.
I have the scenery I need, but it still looks a little weird, a necromunda boxed game without scenery included, that was half of the excitement of it when it first came out. I understand why GW are doing it this way, designing to a price point, and maybe card scenery is not acceptable in today’s market, but I think they are missing a trick here.
MDF scenery may have been the answer to provide a real underhive and keep costs low.
Having said that, I’ll be prerdering the second its available, new rules to try and great new models to use with the old rules if I want, win-win!
Now I just wait for my beloved Delaque gang to turn up in all new multi-part plastic glory.
Or Mantic Battle Zones…
Looks ok, but sad not to see scenery a la shadow war Armageddon. Will probably pass on the box and wait to see what else is released.
Boxed set is looking really good and i am happy that they included House Escher as one of two as IMO it has much better looking models than those House Goliath models.
Anyone else notice that those tiles are the same layout and size as the forge world zone mortalis resin ones :).
I was really disappointed to see the box contents. I wish I had my original box with the card stock 3D terrain. The flat mat looks too much like space hulk and the lines of fire will be too constrained.
AWESOME! Stoked for this
Tiles are there to make it playable out of the box for newbies, but that doesn’t make them any less dumb. If I want to play Space Hulk, I’ll drag out my copy and play Space Hulk. I don’t; I want to play Necromunda. I’m hoping, HOPING, they release these gangs and the rules individually so folks like me don’t have to shell out for a bunch of useless cardboard.
Defo looking into this one!!
Didn’t have the sound on but is the movement by squares like Space Hulk?
It didn’t say, there wasn’t any spexi. However I suspect it might not be because they’re providing rules for playing on multi-level terrain like the Shadow Wars stuff and that doesn’t have squares on it. I suppose it’s possible that there will be a version that uses squares and one that doesn’t.
Love it! Soooooo looking forward to it. Gonna be getting me an Escher gang fer sure! 😀
Gonna paint my Escher gang up as 80’s goth chicks, complete with Skinny Puppy symbols. Gotta be done.
There’s a band name I haven’t heard in years
Can only imagine what happened to the unfortunate bloke what had to go and tell the Orlocks they lost their contract to be in the starter box.
I read that there are two sets of rules, the traditional rules of playing and a space hulk style of play.
looks to be a brilliant game.
Nervously looking forward to Arbites and Spyrers. Please GW let at least one of these not suck!
(Though as a fallback position, the Goliaths look pretty damn good)
Time to dust off the Arbites (Sorry, “Enforcers”) and Van Saars again? May be tempted by some Ratskins too. Any excuse to get the drop on the scum of the underhive. Be nice to have the option to board game it too – alway good to break people in gently with a board before you unleash 4′ of expansive industrial terrain. Just hoping that the box ain’t too expensive – and/or the rules/tokens/dice will be available outside of this box – if they’re gonna add other factions, and support like they oughta with new models, then I hope they open it up like 40K – plus it gets some nice new shiny models for Genestealer Cults/Guard to use.
That voiceover needs a touch of compression and it may work – the quiet whispers are too quiet and whispery in contrast to the louder segments – cannae hear a bloody word she’s saying in some parts, and the others I’m trying to place exactly where in Essex that accent comes from… Johannesburg? Milton Keynes? Summer Bay?
At the Forge World open day, someone reported back that they would be reproducing all of the gangs from the original game and expansions as well as some newn stuff. There’s also rumours of a visit to Hive Secundus and potential Genestealer Cults.
I guess at the moment there’s no reason why you couldn’t proxy gang members of one house with Cultist models and use the rules for that gang. Goliath would seem to be a good fit for a stealer cult.
Want to see how it plays, the description is appealing hopefully it turns out so.
Cold on the idea of no 3d but still got a load of the old scenary so not a problem for me, price point will be interesting.
While I like thd Escher I feel the old metals had more character. The Goliaths are a vast improvement, more roided post-apoc warrior as opposed to the old BDSM punk Mr Universe candidates.
I’m loving the new Goliaths and in the old game they were probably one of my least favourites (along with Cawdor).
Well that’s going to burn a hole in my pocket and the wallet aswell.
Wonder how they will scale next to regular and primaris space marines? And could I head-swap genestealer hybrid heads?
The best thing about the Goliaths is that some of them look happy – nobody in 40k looks like they are enjoying themselves (except maybe the orks) – so that’s cool…
So they’re battling over the next supply of hair spray and steroids ?
The only thing missing is some good old fashioned glam rock …
Well… I was NOT expecting to see them re-release Necromunda but without the Underhive itself! Especially as they’ve just released a bunch of new plastic scenery that I assumed would make it into this game. Kind of looks like an admission that they couldn’t release this game at an affordable price point.
The gang miniatures look really nice (and i couldn’t stand the original plastic Goliaths).
I suppose I’ll see what the new rules are like. They could have made a good game, but playing on all that cool scenery was what really make the old game great.
Can you imagine the price with all new models, and enough scenery to pay Necro? Also how peeved people would be if they’d already spent a tonne on the scenery for Shadow War and then being forced to buy it again with Necromunda?
Its a shame it isnt included, but I can see good reasons why its not 🙂
Oh absolutely I get why they’re not including all the plastic terrain.
But that doesn’t make the decision not to include the scenery any less of a big thing.
Once I understand why something is like it is, it stops being such a big thing. I think they wanted to price this game lower so they opted for no scenery.
Wow, just wow. Is it November yet? This and Mordheim were the main reasons why I played GW games for so long. I can’t wait to get this. Both of the gangs are as over the top as I remember. So many cool games coming out in the next several months!
cannot wait for this – really looking forward to it – flat tiles for the sewers and tunnels and add on rules for multilevel skirmishes – nice nice. Love the sculpts already adn Escher and Goliath arent even my gangs of choice. Hope they dont wait too long before releasing the minis for other gangs – expecting some lushness for scavies, ratskins and House Delaque. Nice one GW
