Games Workshop has revealed some new entry points or potential army boosters for those seeking to dive into Warhammer: The Horus Heresy. You will soon be able to pre-order all plastic Combat Forces for use in this Sci-Fi Grimdark galactic civil war.
Legiones Astartes Combat Force // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
To kick things off, we have the Space Marines. These Legiones Astartes troops could be Loyalist or Traitors, or maybe even somewhere in between. The set comes with twenty Legionaries in MkVI Power Armour who can be equipped with bolters to make them Tactical Legionaries or all given missile launchers or heavy bolters to make them into a Heavy Support Squad. You also get two accessory sprues, allowing you to turn your Space Marines into Sergeants, Vexillia and Vox units.

One of your squads can then be mounted up in one of the classic Deimos Pattern Rhinos. As you'd imagine from the workhorse of the Space Marines, this hasn't changed much and still comes with all of the upgrades like pintle-mounted weapons, searchlight, dozer blade, hunter-killer missile and accessories for modelling like the towing hooks and optional hatch variants.
Lastly, you get one of the towering Leviathan Dreadnoughts. This can be armed with brutal weapons like the cyclonic melta lance, grav-flux bombard, and storm cannon. You can also add either heavy flamers or twin-linked volkite calivers to the hull. It also comes with cosmetic upgrades to craft your undying warrior into the war machine to suit your Legion.
Mechanicum Combat Force
If you prefer commanding unthinking automatons, then you could also pick up the Combat Force for the Mechanicum.

This fearsome force is elite and at the core of the Combat Force are the six Thallax. They are cyborg warriors who can roar into battle using their jet packs. Their standard lightning guns do a fair amount of damage but they can also be changed to phased plasma fusils, photon thrusters, or multi-meltas depending on the enemy you're facing. You also get a bunch of chain bayonets for close-quarters action and melta bombs when you want things to go boom.

Backing them up is a pair of the Castellax Battle-automata. Get up close and personal with these automata thanks to the use of claw-like shock chargers or the circular power blades for slicing through power armour with ease. You can also get built-in bolters or flamers, plus shoulder-mounted mauler bolt cannons, darkfire cannons and multi-meltas. Equally awesome killing machines.
Capping things off, you have the towering Thanatar Cavas Siege-automata, which is a mobile artillery platform that can also hold its own should you get close. It comes with a devastating Hellex-pattern plasma mortar, shock chargers and wrist-mounted mauler bolt cannons. It can be posed however you like. I like the idea of showing it delivering a kill shot to a downed Dreadnought or something like that!
Solar Auxilia Combat Force
Last but not least, we have the poor humans of The Horus Heresy who have been dragged into this conflict.
Solar Auxilia Combat Force // Warhammer: The Horus Heresy
Standing up against machines bred for war and transhuman warriors indoctrinated to kill mercilessly, the Solar Auxilia need to bring the big guns and the numbers. Thankfully, you get plenty to work with in this Combat Force.
At the core of the force is the Lasrifle Section, which is made up of twenty Solar Auxiliaries with lasrifles. They can be customised and tweaked with a mixture of accessories plus you get ways to mark Sergeants, Vexillaries and Vox Operators. You can mix and match the bodies, heads and arms to create very dynamic-looking squads.

You'll need leaders and that's where the Tactical Command Section comes in. This set can be made into an Auxilia Captain and four Auxilia Companions. You can also make it as a Line Command Section or a Legate Marshal with four Lifewards (bullet fodder).
Backing up these soldiers on foot, you've got the Hermes Sentinels, of which you get two. These are light scout walkers of the Solar Auxilia, which can be built to represent the Hermes Light Sentinels or Hermes Veletaris Sentinels. Depending on how you build them, they can either be armed with grenade launchers, multi-lasers, heavy flamers or volkite calivers.
Finally, some big guns are required for blowing away your enemies. That's where the Leman Russ comes in, which can be built as the Leman Russ Strike Tank or the Leman Russ Command Tank.
All of these sets can be used to get you started with a particular faction within Warhammer: The Horus Heresy (just add a character or two), or you could use them to bolster an existing army. There's no word on how many points each of these Combat Forces is, so if you're a Warhammer: The Horus Heresy player, maybe drop your thoughts in the comments below.
What do you make of these Combat Forces?
