Big Carnevale Kickstarter Update + Gav Thorpe Now On Board!
January 19, 2018 by brennon
The Carnevale Kickstarter has been going through the process of fulfilment right now with models being sculpted and more. However, it has been delayed slightly BUT for good reason. Gav Thorpe is now on board with them to write the book!
Check Out The Big Update Here
The decision was made to wait to see if Gav Thorpe's schedule would open up, allowing him to get involved with the project.
This is now a reality and Thorpe is on board as part of the team bringing Carnevale to life.
Gav says:
"I'm really looking forward to working with TT Combat on updating the world of Carnevale. As a fan of darker fantasy and medieval mysticism, I think this is going to be a lot of fun."
Gav Thorpe has had a pretty extensive career in the industry, at the helm of many projects, so this should be a great direction for the TTCombat team.
Are you looking forward to playing more Carnevale?

I had no idea who Gav Thorpe was, so I looked him up. 50 or more 40k and Warhammer Fantasy books (plus a little bit of Frostgrave). A range of games design on GW games but also some others like “Cutlass!” and even “For Honor”. Now I understand why I should know him but didn’t! BoW shouldn’t assume GW knowledge 🙂
I have mixed feelings about this.
Firstly, I should make clear that I’m glad Gav Thorpe is getting involved: I think it will lead to a better product in the end. I like a lot of Gav’s work over the years, and when I’ve followed his blog or occasional comments here, he’s always had interesting and sensible and insightful things to say. So that’s all good.
The unease comes from thinking, ‘so what was plan B?’ If Gav hadn’t been able to come onboard, the implication is that TTCombat would have ploughed ahead with a product that they thought could be improved.
I suppose it’s unavoidable that when a company buys an IP / game from its original owner they won’t necessarily have the expertise to develop it all in house. It’s also not to say that the creator of an IP is necessarily the best person or company to really develop it to its full creative (never mind commercial) potential.
Still, I backed the big original Carnivale Kickstarter and backed TTCombat’s new one (with a big, all-in pledge), so I’m still excited about what’s coming. The miniatures are looking a lot better than the initial sketches that they showed off long before the Kickstarter. And their terrain is very good and should bring a whole new lease of life to the game.
So basically… I think this is really good news. Am a little nervous about new people handling an IP I think is fantastic, but that’s probably normal. Still think that overall it’s looking good. Can’t wait till it’s ready!
(Although if you’re reading this TTCombat, please ALWAYS err on the side of being delayed if that means you get a better quality product in the end!)
From what I’ve read, Gav is purely involved in the fiction side of the new version, and not on the game design at all. When I saw his picture in the update from TTCombat I assumed the same thing, but as far as I can see his input will purely involve bringing the world to life and not on the games design side – which would also have been a positive in my view, although things are at a fairly late stage now, but hopefully allays any concerns about TT Combat flying by the seat of their pants.
I think you could be right – it’s not entirely clear – but the narrative and the writing are important too, so if Gav brings some more professionalism that TTCombat feel they need, that’s still a good thing.
In fact, there was possibly more scope for a new owner of an IP to mess up the writing than there was a second edition / edit of the rules.
Templars me thinks?
This news almost makes me wish I hadn’t backed the KS.
