About the Project
After a flood of kickstarter miniature games arrived I realized just how many starter sets for different game systems I have unpainted. In many cases I've been playing with them for years but the time has come to add some love and colour to these models that I've bought.

Taking stock
After a quick think the other night about my pile of shame I decided to reflect on how I’d gone after 2 years of ‘Spring cleaning’. If you check the start of the project blog you’ll find I wrote this;
“Here’s the list; Heroquest, Advanced Heroquest, Warhammer Quest, Man O’ War, Dread Fleet, Space Crusade, Advanced Space Crusade, Necromunda 1st ed, Space Hulk 1st and 3rd Edition, 40K 5th,6th and 8th editions, Burning of Prospero, Betrayal at Calth, Mighty Empires 1st & 2nd Ed, Warhammer 5th to 8th eds, Warhammer Age of Sigmar 1st Ed, Shade Spire, Blood Rage, Rising Sun, Conan, Mythic Pantheon, Massive Darkness, Zombicide Black Plague, Zombicide Green Horde, Descent, Runewars, Dark Age starter set, Flames of War El Alamein, Fallout (boardgame), Imperial Assault, Mice and Mystics and Stuffed Fables.”
The titles in bold are completely done. Finished. I can also add the following titles to that list; Kill Team Rogue Trader, Blackstone Fortress, 1,000 pts of an Empire Averland Army, 2 8pt Saga warbands and a metric tone of D&D Characters.
I’m also going to give myself a partial credit on;
Man O’ War – Only Skaven, High Elves, Dark Elves, Chaos and Norse to go.
Space Crusade – Marines, including Chaos marines done, Aliens to go
Space Hulk 1st – Terminators to go
Burning of Prospero – Loyalists done, Thousand Sons to go.
Shade Spire – 8 gangs done, 8 to go
Massive Darkness & Zombicide Black Plague – starter sets characters done.
So much to go it’s stupid. Or as the Witcher famously says “Fuck!”.
Massive Darkness Dwarves
So these guys were my first KS. They’ve been in the boxes for 5 years and never seen a lick of paint. I be honest, I had no desire to paint them, but seeing as I had yet to play with them, I felt i owed it to them. No great effort put in and that reflects in the paint job, but, they are painted.
Chaos Cultists!
Another blast from the past. 20 Chaos Cultisits from the Dark Millenium box set. Again I had no real desire to paint them, they were just on my list of stuff that had to get done.
20 Cultists, 48 hours start to finish
2 Massive Darkness Dwarves 3 hours start to finish.
Anglodanes with daneaxes
So I recently decided to target my efforts towards larger project. I had a number of ideas that were ready to go. I became paralysed with choice and so in the interum I decided to paint some Anglosaxon axemen. With all my minis I follow the following routine;
- Base coats
- Shading
- Highlight with the original base coat
- Highlight with a lighter colour
- Base the mini
If you go into the woods today.....
Several years ago I themed an Ogre army around the ancient Germans that slaughtered 3 legions in the Teutoburg Forest. I have since painted an army of Roman themed Dwarves, so the Ogres seemed a good idea. Here’s some sample ogre pikemen.
I’ve added hair to most of the heads and ancient German style shields. I also added weapons that looked more in with the theme, spears, axes, swords etc.
On the bases I think I’ll add some branches but otherwise quite like the look so far.
18 hours for assembly, painting and basing
Warhammer Underworlds
Three more factions done. There’s about 50 hours worth of work here but given the high level of detail on the minis I was happy with that. I think that takes me to over half of them all done (14/24)-Garrek’s Reavers, Steelheart’s Champions, Sepulchral Guard, Ironskull Boyz, The Chosen Axes, Spiteclaw’s Swarm, The Farstriders, Magore’s Fiends, Stormsire’s Cursebreakers, Thorns of the Briar Queen, Mollog’s Mob, Eyes of the Nine, Zarbags Gitz and the Godsworn Hunt.
So just the Ylthari ‘s Guardians, Thundrik’s Profiteers, Grashrak’s Despoilers, Skaeth’s Wild Hunt, the Grymwatch, Rippa’s Snarlfangs, Lady Harrow’s Mournflight, Ironsoul’s Condemnors, the Wormspat and Hrothgorn’s Mantrappers to go.
I’ve also learned to take photo’s with a bright background and furtherback. The camera strangely makes models seen further back as better than up close.
