About the Project

Lately, I've been running war games every weekend with members of the community via web conference. Players log on and play wargames with each other in real time, regardless of location, and we usually have at least a couple spectators as well. Many times it’s been Darkstar, but we’re also running wargames in Panzer Leader, Arab-Israeli Wars, and now Valor & Victory.

BoW/OTT community members @brucelea, @damon, @davehawes, and @rasmus have taken the plunge, leading battalions across thousands of meters of desert, starfleets in pitched battles across the heavens, or vicious firefights in the jungles of Vietnam, all without leaving the comfort of their home.

Hard-core, old-school command-tactical wargames can now be run (complete with spectators and recordings) in real time, with BOTH PLAYERS moving pieces across THE SAME virtual game board, thus maintaining player agency, speedy and instant results (no play by e-mail), interwoven turn sequences, any questions / feedback instantly received and addressed, and with the game being virtually recorded as it goes, a ready-made battle report can actually be created as we go.

All of this without the players having to install any new software on their computer, on any platform (PC or Mac). All that's needed is to agree on a time, a handful of dice, and a bellyful of courage!

Every weekend can now be a boot camp! All without costing me thousands of dollars in airfare, too!

Battle of Trenton - 20mm PHYSICAL miniatures wargame video

Good morning everyone: Here is the edited replay video of yesterday’s stream, where we commemorated the 245th anniversary of the Battle of Trenton – the “Christmas Miracle of 1776” during the American Revolution.

In this battle, General Washington and his last 2000 men make a risky night crossing of the Delaware River on Christmas Night, crossing from Pennsylvania into New Jersey. They objective … mount a last-ditch, do-or-die assault against a garrison of 1000-1200 Crown German “Hessians” stationed at the town of Trenton, capital of New Jersey.

In all we’re looking at two river crossings, 20 miles of forced night marches, all made with absolute stealth. Had the Hessians (Fredrician-trained Continetal soldiers with fortified buildings, dry powder, professional officers, supplies, food, etc) gotten even a hint this attack was coming, that would have been the end of Washington’s sick, starving, half-clothed, and demoralized army and probably the American Revolution with it.

As it went down historically, complete surprise was achieved, and the “Miracle of Trenton” was carried off with only a handful of casualties. Meanwhile, the whole Hessian outpost was killed, captured, or wounded (less than 50 managed to escape across the fields to rejoin Cornwallis’ British garrison at Princeton).

In this 20mm miniatures game, we have a 32-square foot table, 170+ figures, and the first two and a half turns already complete (all the approaches and activations, etc).  We jump right right into the first musket volley!

Hope you enjoy the video! Might make a fun listen while hobbying or painting.

The Battle of Trenton – 20mm Miniature Wargame – The Christmas Miracle of 1776

Today we’re running a 20mm miniature wargame depicting the main action at the Battle of Trenton, fought during the American Revolution on 26 December 1776.  A desperate surprise attack against a fortified brigade of German soldiers in the employ of the British Crown, this was the absolute last throw of the dice for an American Continental Army on the brink of disintegration.

Crossing the half-frozen Delaware River in the dead of Christmas night, the Americans marched against the Germans and assaulted Trenton in one of the most fateful moments of the war.

Failure here would have meant the end of the Continental Army, almost certainly the Revolution, and probably any prospect of a “United States” for at least another hundred years.

It’s happened yet again, folks! Once more a powerful army of dastardly villains has marshalled its forces and launched on assault on Santa’s North Pole Village and Christmas Workshop … all in a sinister attempt to ruin the holidays for everyone!

It’s up to the heroes of the North Pole Defense Force to save the day in the name of happiness and holiday cheer! Can this magical “Christmas Militia” defeat a battlegroup of modern Russian armor, including T-80s, T-72s, T-64s, and T-55s? Or will Santa’s workshop wind up in cinders?

Find out as we play the wargame that determines the fate of the North Pole … YET AGAIN!

Up at my Dad’s now, and the Trenton board is entering it’s “final construction” for our scheduled 26 December game (Battle of Trenton, 26 Deceomber 1776).

Meanwhile, there might also be a smaller, side “project of opportunity”?

Disturbing intelligence reports have arrived of a possible hostile force marshalling and armored strike force near Santa’s Village at the North Pole …

Often these enemy forces strike at Santa’s Workshop and Christmas Village in vindictive attempts to ruin the holiday – and it’s up to the brave and lovable heroes of the NPDF (North Pole Defense Force) to foil their dastardly plans.

No promises, but we’ll see what happens this year …

First of all, HUGE THANKS to the team for the honor of a Golden Button on these scratch-constructed 20mm buildings I’ve been putting together for our upcoming Battle of Trenton.

Holy hell, that’s awesome.  Thanks so much!

So Ben and Lloyd were asking about the patterns / skins used on this.

I have found elements on line, but had to more or less put them together myself (I just didn’t draw them pixel-by-pixel).  Also, they had to be scaled to the right degree.

Anyway, these are attached to this project thread if anyone might have use for them in their own construction projects. 😀

We’re getting ready for our 20mm wargame recreating the Battle of Trenton (26 December 1776).  Crossing the Delaware River under cover of darkness on Christmas night, General George Washington took the last 2000+ men of his disintegrating army and launched a desperate counterattack against a Hessian garrison in the town of Trenton, New Jersey.  It didn’t win the war or turn the tide, but the miraculous “Christmas Victory” provided just enough hope to keep the flickering candle of American freedom alive a little longer.

Join us as we start working through our last prep work to setting up this 26 December commemorative 20mm wargame!

So the last buildings on this project are now complete.  Among the last bits of construction was going back and “face lifting” the large church (so it cansit beside the smaller church that came after it).

I hope to get all this set up for a Sunday stream, along with starting the detail-painting on my Hessians (all prep work for the upcoming 20mm Battle of Trenton game I hope to run on December 26).

Here is the church with the modular wings set on the sides, and new bell tower built. Here is the church with the modular wings set on the sides, and new bell tower built.
