Troops of hell: finished
With a simple paint scheme I was able to finish all nine hell hounds and four hell warriors in two short painting sessions.
They all started with a storm vermin fur undercoat from a spray can. I then drybrushed them dawnstone, washed reikland fleshshade and added a final drybrush of administratum grey. Metal areas were painted leadbelcher and given a highlight of ironbreaker. The eyes and censers were given a glaze of bloodletter.
Eurytion and Centaurs: reference images
For these three I’m going to go with grey skin tones for both the equine and human halves, with bone for most of their accessories. Brown leathers and a fire effect on the centaur weapons will finish them off.
Eurytion and Centaurs: finished
All these models started with a spray undercoat of storm vermin fur. They were then drybrushed russ grey followed by fenrisian grey.
The bone areas were painted rakarth flesh, washed agrax earthshade, then highlighted ushabti bone. Eurytion’s bone areas had an additional highlight of screaming skull.
The leather areas were painted mournefang brownand then washed agrax earthshade. Eurytion’s leathers received a highlight of skrag brown.
The flames were basecoated iyanden darksun, then highlighted macharius solar orange followed by mephiston red.
The metal areas were basecoated leadbelcher, washed nuln oil, then highlighted ironbreaker.
Lots of skin: reference images
The next batch of models I’ll tackle is the models that are predominantly exposed flesh, white cloth and leathers. The models are: Atlanta, Heracles, the four Amazons, Circe, Echo, and Sisyphus.

Half way update
With today being the last day of June I’ve had exactly half the time I allowed myself for this project. By my count I’ve done 53% of the painting, so I’m a little ahead of schedule.
My original plan was to paint the titans first, then the gods, monsters, heroes, then troops – in that order. I stuck to that plan for the first four months or so. As I played games I realised that it would be nice to have a fully painted up core box, so my games could be played with fully painted models.
Another way of looking at the models that are left now is to break them down like this:
- The remaining models in the core box (troops and heroes)
- The remaining models in the Pandora’s box (troops and heroes)
- The Poseidon expansion
- The Hera expansion
- The Hephaistos expansion
- The troops and heroes in the smaller expansion boxes
What I also mustn’t forget is that I will need time at the end to re-base everything on to transparent bases!
My revised plan for the rest of the year is to cross one of the items off the above list every month.
Finishing the core box: reference images
I only need to paint 11 human sized models to finish the core box. These are the heroes Leonidas, Achilles, and Odysseus, plus the five hoplites and three spartans.
As these models are all very similar “human Greek warrior” models they should all paint together easily. Each will only need flesh and metallics, followed by shading and highlights for their primary colour.
Finishing the core box: part 1
Each model was basecoated with a spray of the most appropriate base colour: Mephiston red for Leonidas and the spartans, Mournefang brown for Achiles, Caliban green for the hoplites and Macragge blue for Odyseus.
All the flesh areas were basecoated bugman’s glow, washed reikland fleshshade, then highlighted cadian fleshtone, followed by kislev flesh.
The red capes and crests were washed carroburg crimson then highlighted evil sunz scarlet followed by wild rider red.
The green capes and crests were washed biel-tan green then highlighted snot green followed by moot green.
The blue cape and crest were washed drakenhof nightshade then highlighted with ultramarine blue followed by calgar blue.
