About the Project

I have many other projects so I thought I would lump all my other random stuff into one to stop this getting out of hand. I'm going to start with some stargrave but this could go anywhere from there.

Making a start
Making a start

I make start and my first mistake, making the base I started in one corner measuring the angles and length of each side and then cutting those out. Once I had got all the way round I found I was out by quite a bit and this meant the back of the base was too narrow, I should have marked it all out before making the cuts. Lesson learned there.

I’ve made my first bit of wall as well (Zen should be in the hole) with a corridor on left and the view screen on the right. Deciding on the height of the walls not something that is shown on the TV show or in the plans, you never really see much above the top of Zen so I added a bit extra but i might cur that down later.

A bit of research

So I started with a bit a research (typing into google really) to see what is out there and I came across this:

Inspired by this I got the same plans and then gathered up some images, I case any of you still don’t know what I am aiming for then the image below is what it should look like. However I quickly become apparent that as this was a TV set it was nearly always filmed from the same angle as the picture and I could find any images of the front right as the crew would see it (I am guessing it didn’t really exist in the set as that had to be space for the cameras to film from and this is well before the days of CGI).

Beginning with scratch building

I’m going to start by saying although I have been building miniatures for years I hardly ever scratch build so I thought I would give it a try, any advice/wisdom you can offer would be most welcome.

For this project I has inspired by picking up these miniatures below which some of you of a certain vintage will recognise. For those of you who aren’t these are the crew from classic 80’s Sci-Fi show on the BBC Blakes 7. I plan to use these in stargrave, 5 parsecs or 7TV or anything else these might fit into.

I thought I would have a go at making the fight deck from the liberator, to this end I got some plans off ebay from the fan club and some plasticard and set to work.

Below are the tools I’ve assembled for this mission, in the first image is the usual suspects, pin vise, clippers, tweezers, pencil, ruler (there is a bigger one as well) craft knife, an Ofla Acrylic cutter and a file.

In the second image the cutters on the left are conduit cutters which hold a stanley knife blade and is quite good at making straight cuts which are shorter than the length of the blade. The angle guide on it has a gap underneath it so is not that great for thin plasticard but its a visual guide if nothing else.

The tool on the right is a nail drill machine, with variable speed and different bits which are held with friction in the tool. This is it below:
