Currently awaiting wash to dry so thought time for project update.

Have been painting my my Pirate 1st, partly as I had a lack of Blue to do my RN till payday, and partly because I had prepped most my Black Scorpion figures .

I decided to make life easy , that blue would very rarely be in any of the Pirates clothing so I could tell them apart from my Royal Navy Seamen ( who will be a bit more regularly dressed).

Of the figures I had obtained from Black Scorpion   non had muskets, and they a more Film like Pirate look , so these would be my mainly cutlass and Pistol Figures ( I did notice on painting them that  a fair few had Blunderbus)  , which meant my Firelock would my Longarm troops , other than the Grenedier types.

I began with the 1st Cutlas Party.

Next came the 1st of the Firelock Plastics

Then a batch of character figures.

All have been done with various contrasts , either neat or thinned down, particularly Skeleton Horde and Basilicum Grey.

Having got the Blood &Plunder starter set, The Pirates if Legend and the Soldiers set, my sole purchases at UK games Expo were more Pirates from Black Scorpion  which I was pleased to find scale wise a perfect match for Fitelocks new Plastics. These were not purchased to replace Firelock’s but to give more variety to my Pirate Force  , leaving most of my Firelock Figures to be used as my Royal Naval force.

Now for once I actually had a plan for my build…. each side would get one of the plastic Sloops from the starter  but also 2 bigger ships  one being the built and primed TT combats Guild Galleon for my Pirates ( a fairly Generic 3 master which can be used for my earlier Sea Dogs Project and for this) Plus I have now got but not built Sarrisma Precision’s Ship of the Line for the R.N.

The Two forces are centered around a friend 2 Neices , the younger portraying the Despicable Captain Black Alice, Captain of the Sloop ‘Fluffy Bunny’ and her Royal Naval Opponent her Sister Lt. Commander Sean ( nee Susan disguised as a man)  Henryson R.N. on the Frigate ( Sarisma Ship of the Line) HMS Troutbridge ( for any old Navy Lark fans)

Captain Alice was a Hero Forge Custom Figure, and Susan was a rather nice female Pirate figure from Black Scorpion.

Scale

As mentioned in the intro for project I found that Black Scorpion figrescare a good match for the new Firelock Plastics,  and a guy on you tube has done a video on how BS Figures match some of the older ranges from Warlord or Foundry.

To be honest for this period the minor differences in scaling really are academic as people come on all shapes and sizes , so figure sizes  is a minor point, it’s usually differences in wpns and kit sizes that maybe biggest issue  , but in this period standardization of wpns and kit would be the rarity rather than the norm other than in Regular Armies and Navies ( though wpns tended to be standardized within ship crews for logistical reasons) which is why I’ll be mainly using Firelock Figures for my R.N crews.

As you can see there isn’t much in it and really would be unnoticeable from normal table lengths.

More of as an accident than by plan I actually finished one of the 2 Sloops 1st.  I’d prepped the all the Black Scorpion Figures and built the 1st 12 of the starter box figures, and decided that on a Saturday Afternoon  I’d start building the Sloop. I then painted the interior of the rear gun deck and two cannons. I stuck the cannon in  place and did the final assembly to find one of the bloody cannons had come loose when I checked on model post glue setting, and then lost one of gun hatches when it fell in side.

All to find that unless do Gerrys extra detailing  you can see bugger all through the gun ports… Guess what I shan’t bother on 2nd..

Anyway having got so far, it took a life of its own, and I gave it a base coat of Zandri Dust. I didn’t attempt John Grey as all the the dry brushing looked like a bit too much phaffing. Instead I painted the deck a lighter sand colour and then pretty much used Contrast paints do the rest, mainly Skeleton Bone on Deck s and Hull  Aggaros Dunes and Wychwood on the Masts.

I did do a bit of light dry brushing with the sand colour to highlight the woodwork and Grain.

I followed the  Johns red for the internal deck walls and used a turquoise blue for the upper hull, but otherwise followed most of John’s Tips, main difference was some different paint shades base on what I had in rack

Now at sometime I may try rigging, but, having managed to knock  it on the floor already by catching my hand on the mast, I’m not sure how  practical rigging would be for a table playable model with someone as ham-fisted as myself.
