The Very Dark Cthulhu Side of World War II is Revealed
March 27, 2012 by brennon
The flavour of the month is of course the epic Cthulhu, role playing in a world of horror and intrigue so how about a new setting to dive into? One of the most interesting periods for mystery is the occult riddled World War II and Achtung! Cthulhu unearths many a dark secret...
Achtung! Cthulhu delves deep into the secrets of World War II as Nazi officers work to twist the powers of Cthulhu against the Allies. Play as heroes of the age from Europe and across the pond in episodic adventures which take you from 1939 all the way up to 1946.
"Imminent episodic Achtung! Cthulhu releases will set the stage for the campaigns and main setting arriving later this year. Written for several of your favourite RPG systems, Achtung! Cthulhu will thrust your characters in to the midst of a dark and desperate struggle, as Cthulhu's minions take advantage of the chaos wrought by the Third Reich to topple civilization! The massive world-spanning Achtung! Cthulhu setting features occult conspiracies, terrifying Nazi war machines, and an ancient evil so powerful that it threatens to tear the world apart!"
This can only be a good thing right?
Have your say below!

Sounds interesting. I was wondering when something connecting the Nazis to Cthulhu would arise from the deep.
Sounds like the crazy sort of thing Himmler would have been into.
@chibi – Himmler was indeed the leader of Occult Nazi thinking… Ahnenerbe

I’ve played WW2 Cthulhu games before and they are great fun! Before you know it, everyone is adopting nicknames like ‘Spadge’ ‘Pongo’ and ‘Smiffy’, dodging searchlight towers, creeping around through barbed wire whilst avoiding mutant guard ‘things’ and other craziness. It’s very hard to remain sane and thats before you even get to see what’s in the nazi laboratorys =O
Damn, this is an idea that needs minis to go with it!
More minis are always good, but with lots of wierd ww2 models out there and the great line of plastics from warlord – I can see me starting collecting pretty soon…
Does anyone know of some good, alpine forces in 28mm? Gotta be ready for that last battle in Antarctica…
I’m so looking forward to this. Check out some of the concept art here:

Love the look of this. Classic feel, but with some intriguing twists.
This reminds me of Hellboy. Or rather Hellboy reminds me of a Cthulhu novel.
@manpug Hellboy was massively influenced by the works of HP Lovecraft, Mike Mignola is a massive fan. Everyone should try and catchup with the Hellboy graphic novels, brill examples of classic, horror storytelling – less is more.
Makes sense for Thule Society to worship Cthulhu.
hey everyone thanks for all the comments, we’re going to announce the RPG systems the game will use very soon, in addition to our own Expeditions system which is designer for new gamers. I’ve also a wargamer (currenty Flames of War & Lord of the Rings Battle Games with some Warmaster thrown in from time to time. I was actually asked about wargame rules funnily enough and the comment about figures got me thinking so watch this space!
Hi Chris – welcome to Beasts of War – cthulhu hub.
Looking forward to your new game. Got a bunch of questions if you have a mo?
How soon is very soon?
Will it be pdf AND print?
Any plans for miniature range or partnership?
Will Achtung play well for the more experienced gamer?
Is it d6 d12 d20 or d%?
Is the game play classic player party and keeper (DM)?
Is there lots more of the great artwork?
Cheers
Hi there Tim! Its great to finally have something cool to tell everyone about! Sure thing….
The first release, Three Kings an adventure statted for two big selling rpg systems is in layout now and should be ready end of next week. Basically we hope to release it during april, sooner the better.
It will be pdf and we may use the rpgnow.com print facility too, then when we have all of the episodes of the campaign finished they will go in to one book. There are two other campaigns in development too including a return to lovecrafts Mountains of Madness.
Being a wargamer myself i would love to do a miniatures spin off, i think if its well received it would be something i could take to kickstarter to do that properly.
Each campaign is being statted for two major systems, i cant say which yet as we have to wait for the signed copies of licence agreements to be returned before we announce but i dont think astute players will be dissapointed 😉
Our own system Expeditiona is a D6 dice pool and is in playtesting, we may may have something out in time for Gen Con but that would be a bonus. It is also card based and is designed to introduce new games to roleplaying, it still has players and GMs but also has some cool mechanics to help new GMs too. Expeditions will come out after the versions of the campaigns statted for the popular systems. Theres so much cool artwork coming, hoping to post the mountains of madness teaser art over at http://www.facebook.com/modiphius in the next couple of days!
Hey Chris – thanks.
So is there going to be just a series of campaign or will there be a book or section on how Achtung has slipped from actual history? For example what finally happened in Berlin? Spotted an illustration with what appears to be a flying battleship? What other weapons have become different?
Will there be magic?
What scale would be your choice for using minis? 28mm?
Cheers
Hi there, you’ll see a series of episodic PDF adventures and mini supplements leading up to the launch of the main book that will go in to more detail about the setting. We’ll actually be sticking to historical events but you’ll be discovering the secret terrifying war fought behind the scenes. We will have options to change history with a Cthulhu apocalypse – as large shoggoths appearing around the Earth will tend to do and look at ways the Allies, Germans and Soviets might have forged an uneasy truce to deal with it (probably depending who was responsible for unleashing them). There will be a load of speculative weapons from WW2 legends, some unusual technology that was allegedly being developed, as well as some cool new stuff. Our artist Dim is actually working on some other wierd war stuff so bear that in mind when looking at his web page 🙂 There will be magic in the sense of the occult and obvious rule systems that feature magic 😉 If we did minis, it’s a good point, I always thought Flames of War was crying out for some weird war stuff, but if we want to support RPG play then we might look at 28mm. I do want to avoid the overly pumped up scale of characters though – 28mm is creeping up in scale to get silly. Most gamers just don’t have that amount of space do decent games so it would be a trade off I think.
Like the secret war idea, very cool. I’m always a sucker for those discovery channel shows about secret Nazi jet projects…
Minis – I guess it depends on just how HERO the characters will be. If your party can fight off a platoon of regular german army guys, then a smaller scale would be better. Even though I play 40k, I do find any tank looks kinda draft on a table, unless it’s jungle or city fighting, as their firepower would prob reach out to the other side of my house, let alone room… Plus if most the characters are regular looking guys and girls then 15mm would be fine. AND 15mm would allow some of the big mythos beings to actually feel in scale with the humans…
Plus would the ‘easy start’ system work out well as a set of skirmish rules for the more experienced players?
Haha yeah I love those shows too although the stories get a little predictable, so we’re aiming to come with some cool twists on the theories. I actually think 15mm would be a cool scale. As well as being compatible with a certain very popular system it would allow for some nice scaling of creatures and all the regular types of troops, vehicles and terrain are already well covered. There’s nothing to stop you having heroic scale encounters at 15mm scale either. To be honest I’ve not give the wargame concept much thought yet so I might start a thread to discuss it in more detail. Minis and a boxed set seems a no brainer especially through Kickstarter. Hopefully once you’ve all seen what we’ve got for Achtung! Cthulhu you’ll be able to tell me whether you think it deserves a skirmish set and minis 🙂 I’m showing off some of the development art for the first release at http://www.facebook.com/modiphius
