Personally, I’m looking forward to a psychic phase that is fun again. Should be called the Dark millennium edition if its as good as the old supplement for 2nd edition…
Your up early for a man who was in the Ye Olde Trip last night lol!
Only had 3 hours kip…
Random winner!
Khorne Chainaxe, Khorne Chainaxe, Khorne Chainaxe!! Make that! (Beware C&D orders…)
Great Weekender guys and nice to see some 40k positivity.
I want to thank the guys from “beast of war” if it wasnt for them i would not have started with playing (and painting) wargames. Thanks to the Dust Tactics demo game video, i bought a ton of Dust stuff and ” imluvinit” :P.
Great show!
I would like a drone, because 5000 miles is about as close to the front line as I’d like to get lol.
I heard that. Wargames are fun, but actual war? Not so much. 🙁
40K the game I’ve come ever so close to playing on many occasions! For me the issue is that GW as a business due to scale etc has to make certain decisions which result in this cycle of continual re release of the core products. Now this has worked well for them historically, especially in the 80s-90s when there wasn’t any real competition, but the time they are a changing. I do think that now is the time to change their corporate strategy. Think of the classic confrontation between Moff Tarquin and Princess Leia where to badly paraphrase, ‘ the more you tighten your grip the more systems slip through your fingers.’ I love the Universe they’ve created but if realistically every two years I have to invest another £300 to stay current then I will probably give it a miss.
I’m really looking forward to seeing what Mantic does in the coming years and also you guys at Beast of War. Thanks to you I’ve bought Kings of War, Dreadball and Infinity! Keep up the good work my credit card provider loves you guys!
I like the mace, but its a little impractical.
Great show! not a fan of 40K but I would love to see more shows on mercs
Great episode as always 🙂
This was a productive weekender. You made me pledge 2 KS, anxcious for constantine. Hopefully win myth(before i get my KS pledge). Not so much on 6th edition, tho it keeps itching. I went gw cold turkey 1.5 years ago.
I like the idea with free trial for BS.
Great show guys. The new 40K Unbound sounds interesting. Would love to see an all Dreadnought force for the Space Marines.
Always like listening to you guys. With Sam rather than Warren on the appeal of bound vs unbound battles.
I also have a vault member account by using their trial first. It is a really good way to get new members. Also use the way they ”trick” lazy people to let them fill in subscription payment. I am one of them was to lazy to cancel it but I was also starting to like it and now I am a happy vault member. If I remember you will have 15 or 30 day money back so it is a fair system in my eyes.
“Although army lists are inevitably used to generate equally matched armies for competition-style gaming – in both formal tournaments and informal battles fought in the same style – this is not really the key reason we have army lists. Most games rules will tend to present the army lists as a means of choosing balanced forces. This gives readers a clear picture of what the lists are for, and it sounds entirely logical and desirable. However, the army lists serve a more subtle but fundamental purpose that most players take for granted. Army lists provide a ready means to structure and build a collection of models. This is true whether the army is historical or fantasy. It is more important where the armies are entirely fictional, because there are no historical formations to research or duplicate…. Army lists, by organising individual models into units and units into armies, provide a framework for collecting that is practical and useful, regardless of whether we wish to play our games in a strictly competitive style or not.”
I’m with Rick Prieslty. I think Unbound armies aren’t a big help for the new player who will be overwhelmed with choice. They serve experienced players who know the fluff, know the options, and know how things work.
*Priestly
And just to clarify, I’m not saying they serve the experienced player by allowing him or her to powergame. I mean they serve the experienced player because they know the fluff and can come up with the kind of scenarios discussed in the show and can dip into their collection to do them.
You have inspired a lot of ideas with this video.
First, I want to say that the macro economics of gaming and wargaming specifically has roughly the same size pie each year, gamers spend about the same amount year to year. It might grow or shrink, but I am confident it does not change drastically year to year. My point is that GW’s piece of that pie is not going to keep pace or grow without new, new, new products giving many more reasons to spend money.
Second, my best game experiences have come from badly unbalanced games. Desperate situations drive the narrative of a game in a way that is exciting and full of unexpected surprises. These games have a meta level of collaboration between the players that is fun. As a DM, story is one of my motivators for playing a game.
Finally, I would love to play a three player 40k game where two players run small Kill Teams and the third player has a massive army with “rules of engagement” limitations. This is the Death Star scenario. I can think of several of scenarios with similar dynamics. For example, a battlefield overrun by Chaos Space Marines where two desperate Kill Teams try to escape certain death. Or Chaos has opened a Gate and the Kill Teams are on a suicide mission to hit the “kill” switch on the Gate to slow the advance of a huge army.
Another “myth”ic weekender fellas! (see what I did there)
So refreshing to see some rounded discussion about the new 40K rather than the usual “WAAA, THE SKY IS FALLING!!!”. I’ll have to wait to see it till I make judgement but I know it won’t stop me playing as my main gaming group is so heavily invested in it, to the exclusion if all else (one day I’ll get them to play some Infinity or Dropzone Commander, one day). I’m sure it’ll give with one hand and take with the other. I think it always seems to be how it affects individual players rather than the whole gaming community. For example, if they’ve made assault more effective and thereby letting the Khorne player run riot, or nerfing jink saves so my mate who plays White Scars will be crying over his bikes. I’m just wondering how it’ll change my Nurgle themed Traitor Guard with Daemon allies. Time to sacrifice some flu-ridden chickens!
On another note, and I’m sure I speak for all of us Beasties (correct name for BoW fans???), we’re glad you’re feeling better @warzan and a speedy full recovery to you. Make sure you keep those gum pockets clean with a liberal and regular alcohol rinse. 😉
Great show I really hope you guys keep going from strength to strength. I would never of started playing miniature gaming if it wasn’t for you guys.
Warren, your comments about quality re BoW material are welcome. However stack that against those Vengeance videos which I have to be frank I couldn’t sit through – a video of a skype chat isn’t quality. Logistically it may have to be that way but you need to recognise what quality means to others. Generally I think you’re quality is excellent, but the audio on those videos made it unwatchable for me.
That said, the backstage stuff is great. Really enjoying Romain’s tutorials and the hobby lobby. Keep it up!!
*your
I agree, sometimes we have to roll with the punches a bit. On those particular vids there was definitely issues with the equipment / connection.
We are working on that to try and make sure it doesn’t happen again, but its a very difficult one to catch before a full day of filming is invested into it.
Great show guys, can not wait for the new edition to get here already
Thank you guys for an awesome contribution to the community.
Doing the “supported” 7 day trial is an ace idea. When I had joined backstage I did indeed feel overwhelmed. It might be time to join again… Even the Hobby Lab by itself could get me hooked.
The girl, the asylum, and selling his soul are all part of the Hellblazer comic book. I won’t explain them, instead I encourage you to read the first 83 issues of the series.
That mace is pretty cool but surely it would have been pretty slow to wield!
You could easily play a ‘big guy brawl’ with Warhammer 40,000 and it would be awesome.
Tyranid biguns vs an army of Dreadnoughts 😀
I lo e the way 40k is heading. Never Been fan of competitive wargaming, for me its all about the fluff and Being able to create free lists is what this game seen as just a way to have some fun needed.
Proper narrative and proper unbound: think Rorke’s Drift, The Alamo, Thermopylae and other battles where the odds were ridiculous. Now throw in the unbound, and you get possibilities where say a 2000 point force faces a 4000 point force. The 4000 could be wall to wall anything, like hundreds of Orks. And the 2000? What about a detachment of Titans? Big Death.
The other thing GW would have to do is de-cheese the rules. Not entirely possible but I got fed up years ago with the dripping cheese.
I think it is too early for 7th edition, I just got my new IG Codex and I don’t feel like buying a new book.
great show guys, re: g.w. yet more milking of the cash cow thats getting smaller, as people are getting tired of been cash raped every 4 years and now 2 years. i really feel for those who bought the limited edition books.
Looking forward to new 40k as just getting back in to it. Just hope they are changing it for the right reasons. If its just to milk us for more money it would be a real shame, maybe if GW gave us more press releases about why they did things they wouldn’t get such bad feeling about them
The unbound army gets a thumbs up from me, it presents so many new possibilities, definitely a step in the right direction. Great show guys.
I think this is cool
Love the 7 day trial idea! And would love me some Myth goodness!
appreciate your views on 40k : they’re certainly more sensible than the ones I keep hearing at my gaming club…
I’ll still miss Specialist Games.
Like the 7 day trial idea! ANd I would love me some Myth goodness!
There seems to be a few new editions over the next few months. 40k, Dystopian wars, Infinity and Pulp city that i play good job I don’t play 40k or I’d have no money!
Hi Beasts looking forward to the new edition of 40K 😉
Good show! I wish I knew where you guys played in NI. Very little wargaming activity in south NI.
Not sure where you are but there is the Lisburn Gaming Club they play a lot of 40K, also EMP in Portadown and I think there used to be a group in Newry and one in Omagh though not sure if they are still going. There is I think one in Dundalk as well
Not sure if your on Facebook but you could try this group and ask https://www.facebook.com/groups/286981511386404/
Thanks for your reply. I am closest to Portadown of those you mentioned. I had never heard of EMP before. Unfortunately I checked their website and the domain was down and I texted the number on their facebook page and got no response.
Since I’m working again, I’m looking forward to signing up for Backstage and helping you guys out. You’ve given me years of entertainment so I’d like to finally do my part.
I’d love me a copy of Myth! Good luck with the backstage sign-ups, great idea to have a taster period.
Great show guys. I’ve been out of touch with 40k for quite a while so the unbound rules sound very tempting. Free trials for backstage….superb idea. I wouldn’t be without my BS pass.
Love the idea of getting to try out backstage first to see what content you have before commiting to a subscription. It sounded like you are only offering it to new sign ups, so as I currently have a free acount do I need to delete this and sign up again to be able to give it a go?
Or you could go here: http://www.beastsofwar.com/backstage-7-day-free-trial/
We’re not limiting it deliberately, but I am trying to see how effective the ‘7 Day Guide to Beasts of war’ is – to see how we progress it.
Soon, we’ll publicize the whole 7 Day Free Trial openly – and will have a ‘Guide To Backstage’ email tutorial to support it as well.
Nice can’t wait for a psychic phase though I’m worried about how effective psychic armies will be (GK and nids spring to mind). they’ll have so many die!
For Warren 😛
On a Pale horse: Unbound Daemon list 2k
7x Lords of change greater reward, psyker level 3 275pts each
3x Screamers of Tzeentch 75
my bad on this one hit the button by accident 😛 …..guess I failed my “Dont press That” test
For Warren 😛
On a Pale horse: Unbound Daemon list 2k
7x Lords of change greater reward, psyker level 3 275pts each
3x Screamers of Tzeentch 75pts
Lords of change must take Summoning (Demonology) Prescience (Divination) and Flickering Fire (Change). First turn Swoop then start summoning daemon unit after Daemon unit to flood the table 😛
…….and Hell shall follow with them
A model generator. Cool idea. Just hope your collection is big enough.
7k in daemons , 30k in CsM ………..i think I got plenty 😛
and the fun thing is that this list can even be a bound list by just taking out 5 lords of change and putting in 3 daemon princes (+1 DP from CSM for a total of 4) using the portalgylph and pumping lvl 3 into all the DP for a Bound list infinite Daemon list .
I fought against a Greater Demon, 4 Demon Prince, Portaglyph 1500 point army back last year.
My entire army got wiped out without causing a single kill. Not a single kill.
That was pretty much one of the last games of 40k I ever played.
Cool news all’round !
I’m not much of a wargamer, still focus on board games, but I’m slowly getting drawn in. I think a free trial of Backstage will be a great resource to decide just how deep I go. Thanks.
Great show guys. I’m torn with 40k. I’m lucky in that I play with a group of friends and we routinely ignore FOC and so on as it suits us, but putting it in the rules helps people who dont have that luxury, so I can see the point. However, my biggest bugbear with 6th has been the sheer number of rules. Not codex releases, I like that nearly everything got an update, but formations, dataslates and all the rest. Some of them break the game and I would take a guess have never been play tested at all before release.
But above all, and I know the price thing has been done to death, but rules + at least one codex every two years is not a major issue if they go that way on the surface, its those things costing £80 at least, every two years, just for the basic rules of the game that bother me.
And with the proofreading standards of GWs recent output, I look at that sunk cost an djust think it really isnt worth that money any longer. I love the models, I’ll still buy them to paint and convert, but the game itself, I’d rather infinity, or bolt action to be honest.
I’m loving all the updates that are coming along!
The new Superman Vs Batman film is heavily inspired by the Dark Knight Returns comic. – Which is now a pair of DC animated films. The trailer for part 2 gives you a bit of an idea about how it goes.
http://youtu.be/MUyQlvdbANQ
To be honest, despite being still a bit skeptical that it’s Ben Affleck, I’m cautiously optimistic about the new film.
I’m not convinced about the argument for having unbound armies in the rules. Anyone that turns round and says ‘well, you’re playing 40k wrong’ in the previous editions when you were doing a scenario based game, is probably not someone you’d be wanting to play an Unbound Game against now it is in the rules anyway.
I’m always looking forward to more things from the Dropzone Commander guys.
I like the idea that unbound armies could ‘free up’ the way gamers look at a game. I play a range of games, but am working on an army for Bolt Action, based on my grandfather’s time in WW2. I am basing the army solely around what his division had when he was there. It is absolutely, in no way an effective army as it has no flamethrowers, flame tanks, heavy howitzers or cavalry. A ‘gamey’ mate looked at the list and instantly dismissed it as it is missing ‘key winning pieces’.
I’d rather take things that aren’t expected to win and see how I go, than take the same old game winning pieces. What’s the point in playing if you’re going to win or lose based on 2 or 3 units/models.
Whilst I don’t play 40K (did, but haven’t for years), the way you discussed ‘unbound’ lists is I feel the only way they can be played. Also agree they are very kid friendly.
Oh, and Myth comp. post 🙂
Love the site, love the shows… very professional
I’ve said it before, but 40K games have always, technically and legally, and for all intents and purposes, unbound(ish) once you hit 2,000 points. Having 6 slots of each (or whatever it was) is more than enough to be basically unbound.
The FoC chart was a great way to balance smaller games, smaller games WILL suffer from certain kinds of unbound lists, but for the most party the Rules themselves will force you, when playing Unbound, to still be careful and include Troops and not go overboard. Certain Unbound armies may seem overpowered but are actually self-handicapping. Playing a 6th Edition 2000 points + game is pretty much Unbound, so – given the negative rules that Unbound armies are going to receive, will anyone really play Unbound in a 2000+ game ? Other than super fluff-narrative games where you were going to discard the rules anyway.
As for Randomnes in magic, it’s the downfall of Warhammer Fantasy 8th edition (not the random powers of the winds of magic, but the over the top misscastings etc) and random charges have been an abomination for both systems, I hope, hope, hope they get rid of this in both new editions.
I could see Warren and Lloyd geared up in Armour smashing each other with maces
God i can’t wait to do an army of just flying greater demons, 1750 gets you around 6
I don’t mind that a new edition of 40k is coming around already but I won’t be buying the collectors edition like I did last time. I feel a bit burnt for getting just 2 years of value out of it.
That said it does sound like (from what I’ve read in white dwarf) it will be a cracker edition.
Interesting use of the word ‘cracker’ there, certainly a word that can be said to have multiple meanings 🙂
I like the new ideas you are coming up with. Keep it up.
Like the idea of a 7th edition as the background stuff is always a good read. Hope there are not too many changes to the forces, only just finished upgrading my Ork Tankbusters to the 6th edition! One day I’ll get round to playing with them. Now a week to raise £60 for the rules and new cards!
I’ll keep my eye on 40k 7th. Not convinced yet but not unconvinced either.
Unbound only pushes me further away from 40K. This game is now even more about list building then ever before and that is a big reason I don’t enjoy 40K anymore.
Signed up for the newsletters, who needs a trial to take premium anyway?
Great ep, that Mace looked epic but completely useless in a battle. As Mr Miagi said “board not hit back” (or flat screen tv in this case)
You want to see what’s coming in the world of full contact sports armour?
https://www.facebook.com/UnifiedWeaponsMaster
Check out some of the weapons they’ve been testing out!
Re the mace thing…
The televisions stand up remarkably well compared to the ‘Breast/Chest’ plate. It was fixed on a metal post with absolutely no give whereas the TVs were on a wooden frame which when hit had some give which disappated the impact… not that I’d have liked to have been free-standing in the armour hit by 35lb of metal with the energy it had in that swing!
I think the unbound lists could work but I think its unlikely to remove meta from 40k the armys are to unbalanced in general points wise between units all its going to do is shift the meta to somthing else.
I have high hopes for 7th edition, higher hopes for Myth landing on my door step.
After hearing you talk about 40k I am alot more interested in unbound armies.
Two comments, just so my PoVis put in the mix.
40k’s OK, but frankly 50 quid (or whatever) is too much to plonk down on a new ruleset for a tweaked version of something that was already pretty “meh” standard at best. I played half a dozen games of 5th ed and 3 games of 6th ed. Can’t get excited about 7th as I really can’lt see myself getting any value from the book (let alone summon up the energyto read the thing) when the odds are it will be obsolete again in 2 more years. My 50 quid will be saved and invested in something more worthwhile – it’s not as if there’s any shortage of alternatves, fortunately.
Secondly, regarding quality – your existing quality is just fine for me. I watch on my wee Android tablet over a fairly rubbish broadband connection out in the sticks. So higher “quality” would actually probably reduce the enjoyability of the experience for me as the increase in buffering could make watching difficult for no discernable benefit as my screen is only 8″ across! Youtube is great for me as I can knock the resolution down which gives a good enough viewing quality whilst preventing buffering. Watching the backstage content is actually a bit of a pain if my broadband is acting slow as I can’t adjust the resolution of the download so can suffer a lot of buffering at times.
I realise all this is tricky and you can’t please all the people all the time, but just so as you are aware that not evryone is necessarily in favour of higher resolution.
Youtube generally sends video of appropriate size – in fact 720p videos can scale down to 480 and 360.
Since the conception of iOS apple worked with youtube to create an optimised format for mobile devices, (HTML5 video stemmed from this) so I wouldnt worry about it. BoW providing 1080p is positive, and all IT bods between will make sure your viewing experience is unaltered 😀
I think 7th really brings home the cinematic feel of 40k, and hopefully bring people into the realisation that games are more fun when winning becomes a secondary to epicness.
Looking forward to my daily BoW newsletters! much better than the forum notifications.
Oh and looked into buying a copy of Myth, shipping cost more than the game itself! A BoW free Myth would be great!
@prosthetics re Myth… Although the game is retailing in the states it hasn’t been released elsewhere yet, mainly as the international KS backers haven’t received theirs yet (US backers got base game a couple of months ago and will be receiving stretch goals soon, after EU and international get it all in a single delivery). One the backers have it (June?) expect to see it retailing locally. Alternatively keep an eye on eBay around then as I suspect some will be on there.
i’ll wait and see about 7th,
So they’re basically taking 40K back to 2nd edition..?
As 2nd edition is the best so far. ( Can’t really count Rogue Trader as it was a whole different beast. ) I see no problems with this. 😀
As for Myth. While it has the potential to be amazingly awesome – Don’t forget to let the winner know that the game is virtually unplayable out of the box. You don’t get enough figures and Mercs has finally admited that the rulebook is utter shite.
Balanced Battles?
I’m sure had you compared the army lists before the battle of Thermopylae (Persians/Spartans – think ‘300’) then you’d have suggested they were unbalanced. However, the ‘win’ conditions and setting would have made it interesting.
40k equivalent: How about a mass of Nids of all kinds having to break through a smaller force of SMs – (BA Sternguards, Heavy Weapon SMs etc) holding a narrow pass that leads to a city? If the Nids break through the city is lost, if they hold for x turns then the fleet arrives in orbit and drop-pods / orbital bombardment blasts them to pieces and the city is saved. Game is narrative/objective driven and has a finite number of turns… and unpredictable. What more could you want?
Hmmm. Just thought on. I can now have my 2000 pts of Dark Reapers again. lol
Myth looks like a cool game missed the kickstarter sadly
batman looks cool
The daily email plan looks like some serious quality – I love the layout that you’re going to be using.
The only thing that I can’t decide on is whether to set it to daily, I’m enjoying free all not sure that I’m hardcore enough for that!
We had an interesting conversation on the forums about game balance vs. “unbound” style of play, were some of the “history heavies” among the BoW community weighed in how to adjust victory conditions, the value (or lack thereof) of “point” systems, and the best use of army lists. Check it out, toss in your 2p, and if you like the topic, give it a thumbs up!
http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/historical-games/forum/topic/thoughts-on-game-balance/
Thanks. Another great video, once again.
A few other things:
1) Indeed the new newsletter format looks crisp, engaging, and professional. I’ve signed up for the historical weekly, myself.
.
2) Glad to hear the new user gallery project is still ongoing, and that there may be some links between the user galleries and the newsletter. I’d better upload some better pictures!
3) One question for @warzan , @lloyd , or whoever’s building this functionality . . . do people have to be backstagers to VIEW what others have posted in the user galleries?
4) Definitely surprised to learn there was more to Constantin’s back story than just the “Neo with a cross” portrayal given to us by Keanu Reeves.
1) We hope to start shipping out newsletters over the next week or two.
2) Yes Gallery is still definitely on, and well be moving back onto it as soon as the newsletters are done (at least phase 1 of the newsletters)
3) Anyone can currently go to an author page and see what they uploaded. We will be making finding and viewing images much more integrated into the site when we move back onto the gallery development.
🙂
Awesome! Thanks for the reply.
Funny enough as I where watching this – her self started watching Pacific Rim …
Unbound army?
I’d use it in a fluffy way….Crimson Fist army with Pedro Kantor and nothing but Sternguard. It wouldn’t win much, but it would be a fun list to play.
AFAIK.
Most games companies either write rules for narrative games WITHOUT point values and force composition restrictions.(Other than ‘historical’ OOB.)!
Or include point values and force organisation to help NEW players have enjoyable random pick up games.
New players just need clear concise rules so they get to enjoy games as soon as possible.IMO
Having narrative driven scenario ideas /campaign book, as a supplement for ‘narrative games’ is the way most games companies approach enhancing this game play type.
This way players wanting enjoyable pick up games can get them without having to wade through pages and pages of ‘scenario/campaign ideas and fluff’.
And narrative players have a ‘one stop shop’ book of inspiration!
All the recent changes to 40k have simply been to drive short term sales with little thought to actual game play.
Unbound does a great job of letting new players spend money on GW product in an unlimited way.
But how much fun is their first game of random stuff vs another group of random stuff?
‘Unbound shenanigans ‘ has no place in the core rule book.IMO.
A narrative scenario /campaign supplement book ,with narrative driven army lists ,is the perfect place for these cool ideas and concepts.
Just my 2p worth.
Love the show! Thor is not immortal they just live much longer and can be killed. The new Batman movie looks like the Frank Miller comics. As far as 40K I love playing the game, but it’s just getting so expensive that I’ll buy what I have to from GW and everything else from other manufacturers that are cheaper. When it comes to the main rule book I know I’ll wont buy it unless they come out with a “much cheaper” version!
A psychic phase isn’t a bad idea, but if they have dispelling work in the same way as Fantasy it will be annoying. Deny the Witch, with ways to increase it, was a good counter for it and hopefully it will stay.
Would love to win this prize! It’s been calling at me for. A very long time. Good episode guys!!!
Ps where’s the dead zone epic game?
I’ve asked that repeatedly and just keep being ignored… 🙁
Not ignoring you, just being careful we don’t name a day and miss it. The workload is very very heavy at the moment, and we are trying to get through it. 🙂
Yeah I know that. :-p
Doesn’t mean I have to like it. ;-(
I want my Deadzonie goodness. 😀 lol
BOW is where I go to learn about new things, the new method of learning about BOW sounds interesting.
Great to have the weekender back. I haven’t played 40k since 6th came out. The cost of GW products is mostly ridiculous. 7th does intrigue me but unfortunately it looks to me like it’s now going to be a game where to be competitive you either have to plow lots of cash to get those top models (either GW or forgeworld) or you have to study the codex and rule books to such a nerdy depth that you find that cheesy unbeatable army. Either way that’s not fun. Compared to playing great games like infinity, dystopian wars, dystopian legions, warmachine, malifaux etc etc why stay or go back to GW? There are as good or better systems that have models that are cheaper and better.
Great weekender guys.
7th ed seems too early to me, like GW is flipping the table over after the assault backlash, on the video game side of things their offerings can barely be called games.
if i could have any fantasy weapon it would be [Odysseus’s bow](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B0_A9XWxV0Q).
unbound / bound armies seem like a good idea to me, first thing id do is look at nids and see what i could do to make them less painful to play. more room for synapse creatures without the annoying force org keeping me from having proper synapse coverage. now if only i could have Big-G in the army >.>….
I am rather slow at learning rules and more complex games (I get there but it takes far longer than most people would) so I found 4-year life cycles too short for 40k for me, so potential 2 year ones would push me away further.
I think I am just going to stick with my own game/setting now as DIY seems the best way to get exactly what I want and also cos no other sci-fi skirmish games do the kind of thing I look for in miniatures.
nice give away always a pleasure
Looks like unbound will allow the kids to buy whatever toys they want….
The shareholders should be happy.
It lets us grown ups buy whatever toys we want too.
Need me some Myth board gaming ;0)
The arcade arms was great, as was the weekender. Looking forward to more.
I do miss the out takes at the end of these vids
My husband is a huge fan…and now I am 🙂 We look forward to every weekend!! Thanks for all you do 🙂
Shamelessly posting for Myth chance. Liking what I see here so far, may be sticking around!
I consider myself to be a fairly competitive player, and the (rumored) changes that I like the most in the 7th edition is that all units are now scoring; troops have additional bonus in scoring provided you’re not playing unbound. I think this change will further increase the diversity of lists we see in both competitive and non-competitive games.
Usually I can’t bring my Ravenwing army in my local tournaments because they forbid character models, which means that I cannot bring Sammael that makes my Dark Angels bikers into troops that can score. However, if this change is true, that means I can bring my Ravenwing army without Sammael because the bikers can score even though they are not troops!
Color me excited.
Best weekender in a while. I really like Warren’s vision for 40k and unbounded. Our local 40k has died a bunch, and i think it is mostly due to people playing so restricted and to the tee. I only play with a few close friends now who all really enjoy a great narrative. When we have time… Also we have really been into infinity lately. Exited for 3rd.
ok, 7th looks like it is tempting me to get back into 40k, sadly i can only seem to find my old grechins so i might just go and buy me a new army, thinking Astra Militarium (Imperial Guard)
Iv just started table top gaming again after a decade or so away from it, Thanks beasts of war your content has been a great help! I used to dabble in 40k but this time round I decided not to invest in GW. Its been a long time, alot has changed and it has been great to try other companies out… but I do miss it and this news makes me want to dive back in perhaps this year.
Hi, I decided to watch this video for a few minutes and ended up watching the whole thing! I bought the gamers edition of 40k 6th edition when it was released, but I never actually got into the game over the last two years, which indeed seems like a waste for me.
I feel a little annoyed that the 40k edition I did buy only lasted two years since previous editions lasted longer, but I also see the bright side of this for me as I now have a new opportunity to jump into the game with the new edition. I’m probably not going to race out for the new rule books right away, instead I think this time I will buy models, paint them up and once my collection grows, then I’ll look into getting the rules.
But yes, I think a new edition of anything is always going to have a good appeal for getting new or returning players, so it’s a good time to be a gamer.
As for BoW stuff, I look forward to the new e-mails & free backstage trial. This is the first time I’ve logged in on my BoW account in ages, but I do visit the site often but never really felt the need to log in.
I would love to tell you how good Godzilla was, as i saw it last night. Unfortunately i fell asleep half way though at the cinema and woke up at the very end. 🙁
The mace of Molag Bal is cool, but I also think he weakened the armor with the little one.
I haven’t played 40k since the end of 3rd edition. So I can’t say if 6th was good or bad, but generally any new rule book is something to be excited about. Though if I had bought the 6th edition and a few supplemental rule books I think I’d be pissed off my $100-150 dollars of rules now had to be replaced.
Unbound rules seem similar to the old apocalypse rules but made for smaller game sizes. Bring what you have and don’t worry about the FOC, the major difference is unbound limits the points. Personally I’m interested in unbound but I want to see the complete rules regarding it before I make any decisions regarding it’s use.
I was a bit ticked off that a new edition of 40K came out so soon after buying 6th ed rules and boxed set, but the idea of the Unbound armies has put in place a loose structure for all the ideas I had for the collections of minis I’d been building up these past few years after getting back into the hobby again. My view of it all is that it’s a game, and games are meant to be played to have fun, so I build the minis I like in the style of their fluff and collect what I want and can afford. I’ve not had anyone say I couldn’t do this or that with my fluffy minis so far, but if I did, I’d just say ‘mind your own business, this is my army mate, so get lost, ya narrow minded troll, lol!
So I’m excited by how I don’t need to make my army follow the FOC (just learnt this acronym today lol), and can instead follow my fluff without any compromises. And since I’d still not got round to playing 6th ed buying the rulebook/boxed game, I might as well start with the new ed.
I do like how they’ve split the rulebook into three books, since having to flip through one massive book to the relevant section was a pain in the arse! Plus it was unwieldy to read on my lap while drinking my tea! 😀 No doubt, gamers who travel around with their armies will welcome the fact that they can just carry the rules themselves without having to buy them separately, or wait for the mini rulebook in the boxed game.
Although, having just pre-ordered the new rulebook set, I don’t think I’ll be buying the next edition if it comes out soon after 7th. I want to relearn how to play 40K (the last edition I had was 2nd ed – so now I come back to it and the psychic phase is back lol) and make the most of it that I can. With the fact that now we have it in the rules that you can take Unbound armies of your own designing, there will have to be quite new and more exciting changes to be made in 8th edition before it would be worth buying. I think by that time, I will have bought an iPad, and all I would have to do is update the rules I’ve got.
@warzan Kickstarters – where was Dust’s Operation Babylon kickstarter? I know it was mentioned on the main page, but not in the weekender? Tsk tsk and tut tut, lol! 😛
I’m sure there will be a wicked set of videos about it to come anyway; especially if the current Dust videos are anything to go by. Exciting times for Dust set in the dusty desert, haha! 😀
Another great Weekender guys! Makes my weekend feel complete!
still waiting on the newsletter confirmation e-mail, any one else got the same issue?
Here’s my idea for an unstoppable unbound army. First you take as many slugga-wielding Ork Boyz as you can. For good measure you take a few ‘eavy weapons, just in case you come up against anyfing nasty. Then you give each mob its own Ork Mek boy with forcefield. If you’re so inclined you can put them in a bunch of Truks, so you can start to smash in faces fasta. You place it all on the table and let teh steamrollin’ start.
Even if someone does manage to stop the unstoppable it should still be a good deal of fun.
As for the new Psychic phase I’m wondering how that will affect my Tau army. Will they just be like Fantasy Dwarfs, only able to react/resist, but not able to cast anything themselves?
That might make me want to pick a new 40K army, because I do like the Magic phase. (Or I did, before the new super-volatile variant.)
I wanted to make a joke along the lines “are Myth’s rules so confusing as other people keep saying and that is why you are giving the game away?” but am afraid that will null the chances to win it. I am looking forward to the rat-rogue-bandit painting! Thanks! 🙂
Another balanced preview of gamesworkshop(they dont deserve it imho)
Really looking into getting the free backstage pass. we all have to think where to spend our hard earned cash so this helps the community no end.
Watched the dust demo games with the other half who wasnt a gamer just before salute….needless to say we have another convert to gaming she is hooked.
Say Hi to justin from me (I am one of the twins that video bombed you wearing the thing one and thing two tshirts at salute…see face book video posted guys)
again loving your work!!!!
Well as much as I have been hitting more skirmish games like Malifaux and picking up a Infinity starter I have to say I am excited for 7th edition. I skipped buying the 6th edition rulebook but as I was considering picking it up this rumor popped up.
Well need to see how this will play out though.
myth!
Another great show guys.
How do existing BoW members sign up for the backstage tryout?
Backstage 7 Day Free Trials Here: http://www.beastsofwar.com/backstage-7-day-free-trial/
The Stegosaurus might have had two brains, one that was supposedly the size of a walnut (fore brain) and a larger one that was located in the rear. Recently that has come up for debate and that the space where this rear brain was supposedly located *might* have been for some boring old glycogen body.
But I prefer to think the Stegosaurus had two so that it could engage the secondary brain in case of emergencies 😉
Oh, and when it comes to DC the only film I want to see is a Power Girl film, but I don’t think anyone could make a Power Girl movie and make it *not* about the breasts in the way Amanda Connor’s art could somehow achieve 😉
On the question of Batman vs Superman or how ‘Cap can hang with Hulk and Thor.. it’s a tricky one but as a GM it comes up quite a lot in superhero games where you have to either create encounters with multiple elements that can be tackled by heroes with different levels of durability or *gulp* split the party so they can face challenges appropriate to their skill set but which still contribute in a meaningful way towards a larger goal. The fact that they did such a good job of that in the Avengers was (IMHO) one of the reasons they managed to pull off that ensemble cast. Nobody really felt redundant.
Also, on the matter of the Constantine movie, one thing that I *did* really like about it was the casting of Tilda Swinton as the androgynous – and quite bonkers – Gabriel. I thought she was pretty awesome in that role.
Great weekender guys 🙂
For my unbound fluff 2000 point imperial guard list:
(revenge of the squats)
100 ratlings = 1000 points
7 wyrdvane psykers 84 points
4 death-strikes = 640 points
2 hydra battery = 140 points
2 wyvern battery = 130 points
I love the idea of the unbound army lists. I’ve actually been designing them since is tarted just for great narratives. One of my favorites that me and my friends have is a Space Marine Chapter called: The Gears of Sin
the thing with this army was; that it FROWNED on cybernetics and actually instead of treated those interned as dreadnaughts with respect, it was actually used as a punishment in the chapter.
The armies vanguard was actually made from a huge company of dreadnaughts, led by the chapters highest Chaplin- who would try to see that those dreadnaughts who died would be judged depending on how they fell in battle as his squad of recruits watched and noted down the events on the battle field.
So basically was a Chaplin leading a squad of sniper scouts and then about 4 or 5 dreadnaughts. Which doesn’t seem a-lot, but in the games it used objectives like if the game finished and the Chaplin’s alive and the Dreadnaughts are dead I earn bonus victory points and vice versa for my opponents.
Great games to come I think 🙂
Personally, I’m really looking forward to Unbound armies.
Both my wife and my eldest daughter play 40k with me, with all of our games based on the foundation of the Dark Vengeance box. Neither of them want to list build or theory craft on the most efficient army, they want to plonk cool looking minis on the table, and get playing. This is where Unbound comes in. I can collect and paint as much Dark Angels and Crimson Slaughter as I want without worrying whether it’s ever going to get played with, and they get to smash my DA troops faces in with cool models.
Win-win as far as I’m concerned.
Good to have you back guys missed you last week, back stage is totally worth it loving the hobby lab made myself a nice set of fields for bolt action today following your instructions.
Great show as always 🙂
daemon hunters army with ghost terminators and terminators only,
and can I have a email newsletter as well please?
Powerful mini crossbow.
by the way you clearly didnt read bat-sup millar version- its superb
Great show. It’s really nice to see the enthusiasm for gaming. Being a die hard Godzilla fan excited to see this movie.
As far as Myth, we bought it at Adepticon and yes the rules are somewhat confusing but with a little patience and play through its a great game.
Am I the only one who wants to see Walter White get Godzilla hooked on meth?
@warzan:
I agree with your opinion on unbound armies, however I do see them as a double sided coin..
When I say this I mean that the thought of fluffy armies are cool (I really like the idea of having a force full of Carnifex’s led by Old One Eye) and do add a new and deserving flavours, however I can see the reality of Unbound being a scene to just abuse the rules and a place of Titans full of D weapons and Death stars as well as overly sized amount of flyers, so I can see Unbound as a game of two players playing with 5 Jetseer councils + 3 Screamer Stars + 10 Helldrakes + 24 Riptides + 6 Necron scythes and 3 Reverent titans..
For me Unbound is divided into two sides..
The idea/concept: Awesome cool
The execution/reality: Brutal and ripe for abuse of the rules..
Just my opinion..
40K 7th…Warren Ive been saying almost exactly what you said about youre take on it online and at the club since it was first rumored a few weeks back. Bravo.
I’m a sucker for pin up art, thanks for the heads up on the kickstarter!
I just bought deadzone because of your guys coverage 🙂 and recently backed mercs kickstarter too. and up until last month I hadn’t event played a miniatures game before …
Keep up the awesome vidz !
I like too see the whole bound unbound stuff backed through hard rules. We all have been doing it in our gaming circles but I think this will be great way to quickly get all kinds of stuff onto the table without having to negotiate moderate and balance this kind of army setups before gaming.
As for balance I think they are going in a good and flexible direction with the bonus stuff for bound armies vs. unbound armies. I love the idea of “asymetrical balance” and again I like the fact that GW delivers the toolbox for it.
Since Warren is getting into 40k again AND has a growing heart for historicals :
What about Forge Worlds Horus Heresy mate ? Its historical Warhammer 40K : ) and the models are stunning.
Evening all, enjoyed the weekender (as always) though i must say, as soon as you started talking about kickstarters I had to turn the show off (through your good selves i learnt about mercs and dreadball, between them the kickstarters must have eaten my entire years gaming budget!).
Enjoyed the talk about 40k 7e. I gave up GW hobbies a decade ago favoring RPG and Euro Games in their place but recently some old college pals and i get together for a weekend or two a year and have something of a 40k nostalgia bash, 2 days without wife, children just a bucket of dice and a box full of little lead men.
I was pretty put out to begin with when i heard 7e was coming out so soon after i got to grips with 6e. but listening to your talk about the potential for official unbound play has given me some hope.
I was also confused by the scale of the 7e release (updated book, starter set, card decks, art books etc.) I had read that GW were looking to adopt a living rulebook style release with constant small updates instead of the massive changes every 4 years. It was to be done with the tournament scene in mind to allow a constantly evolving meta to keep things fresh without the jarring changes a new edition would bring.
Anyway, i guess it’s a case of ‘watch this space’
Aside from this in your video you mentioned giving existing account holders access to the 7 day free trial of backstage. could you clarify how we access that?
Best,
Drew
An other brilliant weekender. I do think you should (have a resolution setting for your videos when you go 1080p) just for us poor people with dongle contracts so we can still watch all of your amazing updates to the gaming world.
Godzilla: my expectations were high and it was a little disappointing at first. Needed more kanji bashing, less weepy humans. I’ll give it another go.
7th edition: I am not a fan, seems like GW is really milking it. I’ll still check it out and flip through the books, but this may be enough to push me back to messing around with Rogue Trader for a lark.
Deadzone: Looking forward to the video. DZ is my current favorite miniatures game and the wait for the wave 2 stuff is driving me crazy.
Will current members be able to get the 7 day emails. I’ve been a BS member but have no way of doing much on here.
Again, a great show …
If you like the new G&S show, go watch that : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCNKcMBYP_-18FLgk4BYGtfw
Is unbound over powered? not even close, competitive play rarely involves a straight up annihilation game, these “silly” lists are sacrificing vital parts of their army, like objective takers. unbound is for things like replacing heavy support units with shooty elites
extra food for thought:
we have seen plenty of extra “add-on” HQ units, low cost but were competing for limited slots. is unbound the way to work these new options in?
I like slappy swingy weapons…
Pick me pick me pick me also love how games workshop brings out more rules and fix problems in a rule book and gets battered. Hopefully this one would be awesome
I love the trial period for backstage. I’m also of a like mind with regards to 7th edition. Willing to give it a try.
Great weekender mates! Finally jumped from watching you guys on Youtube to becoming a member.
Cheers!
Thank you guys for putting up a copy of Myth, good luck to all.
I am wondering if we could get an update on Inheritance, or will it all be locked up in backstage ?
Might be a good time to look at backstage, hey ?
I have a whole lot of hellblazer comics lying around, maybe it could start Reading them again. I’m curious about godzilla, though!
Cool show guys. Are you making a 40k week again as you did when 6th addition was launched?
I think GW have made the right decision in moving towards a ‘living rulebook’ format as a couple of store managers have said. Many of their competitors have used the format for a while now and they are getting bigger all the time. Stepping away from the four year cycle is a good thing for me!
I’ve been with BOW as a subscriber for about 4 months now. Before that, I followed you on Youtube. So, why did I switch? The reason is simple: I ENJOYED what you do so much that I could not sit there getting so much for free. Come on viewers, join the Backstagers. For those who have not taken the plunge of a subscription, I would ask this question……Would your gaming experience be significantly reduced if BOW disappeared? I think it would. Why not invest the cost of a couple of cups of coffee to get so much….Support BOW and do it now
Great show. It’s very refreshing that you cover all angles on a topic. 40K is of course the darling of controversy in the Gaming community, and we’re so incredibly adept at lashing out at the slightest tinkering of what we currently feel comfortable with. We are a passionate bunch. 🙂 Having an open discussion of what could be good and bad, based on who is and how you’re looking at it, does a good job at defusing those fears and oppositions of change. I’m in the “they must be having a laugh” camp when it comes to GW release schedules until my business persona sits his gamer geek alter ego down for a chat and reminds him of the fact that this is what GW is. It has grown from a gamer driven start up company releasing a magazine and sponsoring themed Heavy Metal cd’s to an international hobby business with enormous investments at stake. But that business investment also allows them to attract the best designers and artists to develop their products and they do keep pushing the boundaries. I like it! Unbound and bound armies? Psychic phases? I’ve already cleared some space on my iPad for May 24th and dusted off my Chaos sorceror. 🙂
*sorcerer.
(Shameless competition post) Can’t wait to get my hands on Myth, so gotta get amongst it!
Really keen on the newsletter plans too, beasts of war is a daily staple for me anyway.
The “Powerful Mini Crossbow” box on the shelf behind Sam needs more attention.
I’m reading you and watching from the last year Infinity Week. This video was useful for me in some professional cases about to starting projects because it is easy for me to start doing something but hard carrying on and ending. Thank you.
It was interesting to hear some words about Constantin. I like such stories, I like some detectives noir atmosphere like Harry Dresden, John Taylor (S. Green character). I think that will be better than Sleepy Hollow
Free goodies … and cool one’s at that … living the Myth … a must have!!!
I have to keep this as short as possible because I can go on and on about Batman…but essentially, yes…Warren was right to assume the “Batfleck” image may be related to a comic book thing…
I was one of the many who was initially furious about Ben Affleck being cast in a new Batman franchise over top the Dark Knight trilogy’s still warm corpse…that being said, when I saw that image for the first time, I was actually really relieved, and here’s why…
There is a comic that came out by Frank Miller called the “Dark Knight Returns”…it’s about Batman coming out of retirement to kick ass again, blah blah blah, I’ll spare the details…suffice to say, to me and many hardcore Batman fanatics, it’s regarded as one of the (if not THE) greatest Batman stories ever told. That being said, there are several things that point to this story as at least a source of inspiration for the new movie:
1) Short ears are very indicative of Frank Miller’s version of the batsuit.
2) The “fatbat” chest log – same deal
3) Ben Affleck was cast in lead who is also known for the atrocious Daredevil movie (a superhero made famous by Frank Miller). While the movie put a bad taste in the mouth of anyone loyal to Marvel (Daredevil is Marvel), it also means that Frank Miller could very well have direct say in this new film.
4) Zack Snyder – The director is well known for working with Frank Miller and on Frank Miller IPs (see 300).
To me (a longtime and loyal hardcore DC and Marvel fanboy), although the pacing of this movie’s announcement over the Dark Knight trilogy was perhaps in poor taste, and Ben Affleck was a blatant slap in the face (see his epic failure that is the Daredevil movie), this image, coupled with the above points actually makes me very hopefully, and cautiously optimistic…
P.s. Daredevil wasn’t all Ben’s fault…that script couldn’t have been salvaged by Martin Scorsese directing Daniel Day-Lewis…
Myth!
Are they sticking to computer games with regards to the weapon forging as I would love to see them make gorechild or abadons sword
Great weekender, and looking forward to the emails 🙂
A 2 year edition cycle from a expense point is worrying. Purchasing new codex’s and rules every other year is not cheap. Making digital editions available helps, but at 60 and 38 $ Canadian each I still would not call them cheap.
The unbound list idea is great. I think it is a mistake to call unbound games unbalanced though. It sound like they balance has shifted from the army list to the scenario.
The unbound armies idea is awesome. While, as discussed, you could just go force-on-force with Termies, dreadnaughts, or even the big daemons, it also allows players to tailor forces to stories, either written canon, or written themselves. Who doesn’t want to play out the heroic saga of their custom SM chapter against a ‘nid invasion or Chaos incursion? Allows would-be writers to create content in a very objective way, too.
As for me: I am already developing my idea of an unbound Khorne-devoted Chaos Space Marine army :3
I really like Unbound, i would be able to use my Raging Heroes TGG Army without have to leave anything behind and i agree that is a challenge for the hardcore players, it will be similar to play a TCG, where your adversary can come up with completely crazy stuff and since in war you have to fight with what you have and keep on fighting it makes total sense not to have a FOC forcing you to have specific stuff “Sorry sir but without an HQ we can’t lift our lasguns, we’ll be best to be eaten by nids…” NOPE!
An other smashing Episode and an other cool prize
I can’t wait to take my Templars unbound and roll across the table in all my heavies 🙂
Having done some reading in to new 40k, malestrom of war, changing missions eyc, all a good thing, I’ve played powergamers / mathhammer’ers and it was boring and frustrating as hell. Anything that can shake people away from that I support, any thing that means I remember my Psychic powers, good.
As for an unbound, “brotherhood” of grey knights drop podding onto a demon over thrown world to rescue a leader / break a conduit.
Or an endless swarm of nids, if I can shoe horn more bodies on the the table, I’m betting no one would be able to throw enough anything to kill them all!
Well the 7th. edition will surely be interesting. Only bad thing is that I only bought the 6th just about 4 months ago…..
The new Godzilla film is terrible. But then I thought Pacific Rim was the perfect monster movie. Light on plot, heavy on the monsters. Take that for what it’s worth.
Am tempted by 40k again, this happens every time they announce a new edition. Im not sure if I am spoiled from playing so many games that are alternate activation now tho :S
Love the idea for the newsletters.
Great idea on the free trial. News letters sound good as well.
For feedback, overall quality has improved consistently odd blip aside – and I like the decision to go with your take on the hobby. I have watch stuff I wouldn’t have – and found games because the personality and presentation for the large part works. If you want to go more news style it would be beneficial if you can add in differing view points, without upsetting the balance – as not having proponents of differing view can lead to an overall slant which isn’t an issue for me, but is why I don’t view you as a overall coverage/new channel.
I have a hundred and one ideas for unbound armies – all of which I are existing and part complete projects. All of which can be ‘counts as’ed’ into force orgs or I have/am building to use for a type of game or idea for games. I have no objection to them being in the rulebook, but it would have been more at home in a narrative gaming supplement – with examples of campaigns and building campaigns, and the old idea of a random mission ideas list to be fleshed out by the players.
Just dropped into the rulebook with what I am supposing from the spoiled pages is a lack of support and a you can play this against a battleforged army is lazy. It will lead to problem for pick up game players and feels like a desperate drive sales ploy. I have no issue with a company being successful or wanting to sell stuff, I have an issue when it is through an attempt to generate an arms race and suck as much money as possible assuming they cannot retain the customer. You make a decent product, valve your customers and put out stuff that sells because if $%*&ing cool there is no need for it.
I brought a load of wood elf stuff because it was $£%^ing cool, even though the book is clearly weaker than the other elves
Oh and a 2 year game cycle will lead to bad rules – as Mr Priestley’s has said when the revision of the rules is driven by the sales department and not need for revision it is not healthy for the game
Loved the show, loved seeing Warren get so excited about the new rule set, perfect timing there.
Unbound armies I think could be pretty fun and really lets people stick to the fluff a bit more for certain aspects.wonder if we will see an almost all Land Raider list.
Looking forward to the newsletters 😀
My unbound army would be a massive orc stompa mob, with just all kinds of stompas 😀
I can’t wait until 7th comes out
Great show guys,
On the plus side; unbound 40K may finally give me the excuse I need to buy some of that beautiful Forge World armour. On the minus side; its sad to hear warhammer fantasy is on the way out.
Well I took a 3 week hiatus from BoW as I have been slammed at work and was finding the content a little slow coming through. Some of the content I have little interest in but thats no fault of anyones but mine.
Finally got a weekend off and have had an enjoyable morning watching the Weekender.
It’s good to be back and what an entertaining show.
I loved the 40k segment. After avoiding GW for 2-3 years I am excited with this new 40k version. I think Warren and I have similar interests when it comes to narrative wargaming. I am sure we could have some epic cinematic battles. The unbound armies is for me the big draw here after shelving my 5th ed rulebook and packing away my armies years ago.
I also agree with Ben regarding psychic powers. In recent editions psychic powers have been almost eliminated. I am looking forward to their return.
I will have to check out Constantine as I enjoyed the movie concept thoroughly and also didnt know it was a comic book.
Good one guys….now for XLBS.
New changes to the site are looking good. Nice advice from Matt.
GW should have done a new edition of fantasy. I know around here the current edition is not liked by the community.
When I first heard about unbound lists, I thought it was a cop out from GW’s rules devs. But after hearing others’ take on the narrative lists, or just being able to use all the models you love, i’m more open-minded about it. Not happy about the brought forward release of the new rules set, before I feel I got properly into 6th though.
My unbound list would be every Phoenix lord with a squad each of their aspects in a Rhana Dandra, end of all things type battle! Might get me to finally paint them all!
I love, I hate you, I love you, I hate you.
40K. It’s complicated…
I’m brand new to this site, I just found it about a week or two ago, so I’m really looking forward to checking out the free week…though, it will have to wait for a couple more days, right at the end of the semester for school, so finishing up last papers and stuff. Once I get that finished, I plan to check this out more, so thanks for that!
As for the new 40k…I’m just about to get back into it, I’m glad I didn’t buy the 6th ed rule book, if I had, I feel like that much money is a bit much to have to replace this quickly…I think the ability to have the fluff style games could be really entertaining, though, if done properly, like you guys said. But at the same time, I feel like that means you’ll come up against ridiculous armies…especially for new people who are suddenly overrun by an army of terminators against their standard set up, which could make the game less fun and possibly push them away from the game. I guess we’ll see how it plays out in the future.
Great show guys, I’m really looking forward to the newsletters.
About 40k, I don’t know, somethings have me excited but I’m still feeling a little ripped off. The 6th ed book was their most expensive rulebook to date and priced well above competitors and for it to be the shortest rule set yet just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
If Wargames ever get to the point where its all digital book and there is no hard copies I will stop buying into new editions and just play the old ones. I understand that digital is more convenient but In my life I spend alot of time looking at a screen. I mean i look at a computer for work and browsing and games, then a tv for movies, shows, games then my GD smart phone. Its a big chunk of my life starring at some sort of screen and one of the reasons I love the wargaming hobby is its a escape from all those screens. Also IMHO you can’t beat the feel and even the smell(I might be a little crazy) of a good book. Digital may be more convenient in some ways but that doesn’t make it a superior product, just look at fast food. For me theres also the collecting side of the hobby and that pride I feel looking at my bookshelfs full of gaming books, seeing a digital library or menu on my computer isn’t even close. Another things is I think having the Hard copies of the books is a good way to get others into the hobby. They may see all your books and ask questions about it and if they do you have the book to lend them to see if there interested, and I think thats a big thing with what it costs to get into the hobby especially if its GW games. I know if my friend had never let me borrow Rogue Trader and then The Realms of Chaos books I probably wouldn’t have gotten into the hobby, same goes for Roleplaying. Having those books IMO is a major part of the hobby and Digital just doesn’t replace it.
That mace would tire you out so quickly
I believe I am the random winner you are looking for. 🙂
The unbound force list is a great addition to the game. But I think most gamers and tournaments organizers will stick to codex armies for most games.
You can read the abilities of using the force org. From the video on games workshops YouTube video you can pause it and read it. There are 2 for normal and one for allies. for normal detachment there is re roll warlord trait and all troops get a special rule where they can hold a objective if enemies hold it or consolidating if the enemy also have the rule. For the allies is the same special rule for holding an objective. There still could be more down the page but they only showed this ones or looked like those are the only ones.
It’s hard enough finding time to game these days, if the rules for the game I’m playing were to change every two years I might not even get to grips with them by the time they change again. I’m no longer a big player of 40K, so I guess I’m not the target market anymore, and I’m quite grateful for the release if it pushes back the next Fantasy revision, but if this is a sign that editions of rules will be more frequent I can’t see how that’s good. It’s just a book, a book I really don’t want to own five or six times. I’d rather GW gave me more shinies to buy instead!
Will the email service be text-only friendly?
Oh well, I subbed to try it out, but I will unsub the minute I start getting stuff like this:

Real clip from a recently received marketing email I did not read…
Good discussion about Unbound. You pointed out the exact issue with it in your talk, however. That is never was really needed for the examples you gave, you and a friend could always do that before – a rule wasn’t needed.
However, considering the majority of 40k games are pick up games (at least here in the States), I think we are going to find this become a major turnoff to the 40k game in general.
One other thing I’d like to add because it was pointed out in the video.
Didn’t Hail Ceaser first try to go all “unbound” so to speak? Only to find out players did not like that and came out with “army books” after?
Also, it would have been interesting to see you guys add to the discussion if Unbound and/or Daemonolgy really “required” a new set of rules, or could it have been better served in a supplement?
Looking forward to the newsletters, very innovative!
7th Ed. may entice me back to 40k after a 7+yrs absence. At least I can once again use my Legion of the Damned Space Marines army.
Hey! You guys do great work! Looks like I miss out I the free trial cause I just subscribed! I’m looking forward to the ‘how to navigate the site tutorial’ where can I access that?
Nice to have the weekender back (even if it was only a one week break).
@warzan I can “feel your pain” on the extraction front. I was unlucky enough to be born with an extra set of baby teeth waiting in my gums, so had lots of extractions when I was young. Worst one was 8 in one session and it was 2 injections per tooth!! Still makes me shudder to think about it even 25 years later.
On a happier note, have subscribed to Daily Newsletter (feed my addiction).
40K – I’m looking forward to 7th in general. I do hope that the psychic phase doesn’t dominate though, but we shall wait and see if everyone has to start taking Eldar as allies to protect themselves from all the other Eldar lol
I’m only watching the Weekender and XLBS today (Monday) as the weekend was spent playing in (and recovering from) a 40K Help For Heroes Charity Tournament in Mid Wales. As it turned out that it would the last time that most of us would get to play “officially” with the 6th Ed rules, much time was spent in the pub afterwards discussing what we’ll miss, what we know is coming (and how we felt about it) in 7th, along with what we would like/would not like to see in 7th too.
Personally I’m glad they are changing the way you shoot with mixed weapons from a unit and I hope that they change the fact that wound allocation for all blast weapons is from the centre of the blast rather than closes to the firer.
Love the idea of a free trial for backstage. I would have signed up much sooner for it if I’d been given a week for free to try it out.
Great episode and nice to give the free trials I think it will work out in your favor!
Already thought you guys were doing 1080p as your output is always high quality on the visuals.
This new edition for 40k is a great thing for me, I’m trying to begin playing 40k but with so much material on sale I didn’t know where to begin, now I will have a perfect start point.
On the issue of the tabs at the top and the recent poll, why isn’t Hordes and Warmachine just a single tag, and in the PPHW section? Warmachine is listed under scifi right now, and Hordes under Fantasy.
I have been playing 40k since there was a 40k. I worked for GW back in the glory days of 99-04. 40k 6th edition had pretty much lost me as a hobbyist – not just gamer. I went from a game 1 to 2 times a month to not playing in almost 6 months. 7th has me excited – however if GW is going to a every 2 year model what it really is about me is cost of the hobby. $90 every other year just to keep playing – not spending it on miniatures or the next army book or WD or the great terrain or paint etc. is a little too steep for me.
I feel like this is maybe a plan from GW – misguided – although I really do like the attention they have placed on getting word out and weeks of information rather than ‘pow’ take it or leave it. They aren’t recruiting anymore – they have given up managing their hobby – no organized play – Games Day is anything but GAMES day and retail stores that are a joke. 1 man stores with anemic stock, strange hours and in the US that you have to work at to get to – not in high traffic areas. So if you aren’t getting money from new hobbyists and the $350 they spend in the first year you tap the beardies. Old gamers get forced to buy new rule books and shake up their collections because the rules negate what they had. Scary short term plan.
On the other hand 6th editions had enough holes in it and lack of attention from the studio that it was just needed to fix the universe. The fact that at large events 40-60% are similar armies (DE/ EL, TAU and anyone) and stars are everywhere and it just stopped being fun to play anyone outside my very small circle. Time to fix the glitch.
Thesedays I just don’t have the time or money for 40k. Most of my hobby budget goes to infinity which I think is a bit superior especially since it already works with the whole “bring whatever you want” part without being easily abused. GW lost me a long time back, but I still try to keep up news-wise and always think “someday I might just buy that model when I finish all these other ones…”
Great weekender and I am with Sam and Justin on their love of Pacific Rim, if only Monsterpocalypse wasn’t dead so they could have done a crossover instead of having it go to heroclix…
I have to say I’m not enamoured by the whole 7th edition idea….. 40K has lost it’s shine and now with so many other great games from Bolt Action, Mantic, Battlefront and Hawk to speak of a few of the many, it’s unclear how bringing in a new rule set which possibly outdates the time and money invested in 6th is going to get me screaming more.
I think I like the idea of having rules that allow me to put together games using unbound lists. It allows for some crazy game scenarios and like you said it does create a place so you can say to those people who are “if it’s not in the rules. You can’t do it” that now we can play these kind of games and have fun.
Loving this show more n more 🙂
I have to say one thing: sixth edition was a huge game-changer compared to fifth. Between allies, fliers, fortifications, psychic disciplines, hull points, shooting and wound allocation etc. The game really changed, and that is why some local gamers I know are upset to see such another huge leap with the rules so soon.
Great show!
You’ve just stopped me selling all my 40K! Thanks guys!
they are knee jerking the customer. they are changing to make sales and make their share holders happy and not give a dam about the hobby. its pretty simple its a business model they wish to try out to make money. The system has gone from being that of a “HOBBY” to a simple cash cow to drain for the next 5 years before things close down. The cat came out of the bag through one of the GW videos where the commentator said we can come up with new books and new diversity which means we will cough out 85 bucks or 55 gbp for these 3 books which is being forced upon us and in 2 years or less they will come out with a new book to replace that book. The days of it being a proper “HOBBY” IS OVER. even these guys are not listening to what they are saying. I do like how they are trying to justify the move but in all fairness they are just falling into the trap of back to GW main goal. sell sell sell. Why did it need to be written into the rules. to bring up sales which are lacking even in 40k.
That mace is ridiculous but awesome!
War gaming + hobbies + entertainment = the beast in the world, BEASTS OF WAR
Hey guys,
interesting stuff. First post for me on BOS, it’s a bit long. Over the last couple of weeks just browsing the net has brought me repeatedly back to this site, and I wanted to see some of the interesting articles I saw. I just kept hitting this wall that said “Join Up!” and I’d say meh… another site to sign up, another password I won’t remember. But then I’d be back and hit the same wall. So I signed up for the free account, and I’m damn glad I did! Then I got to watch the Weekender video… I have to say the 7 day email idea is great (see, I uploaded my avatar) I’ve signed up for the newsletter (give me All the news!) and I’m enjoying wandering around just reading the news articles so far. I’m seriously considering a proper subscription, I see some more tasty articles “inside the fence”. Just got to price up the annual, convert to $AU etc. etc.
I’ve been out of 40k for a while, I bought the DV box for the mini’s but never read the rules. I used to play quite a bit of 2nd, so to me it’s the Return of the Psychic phase, a pool of psychic cards and dice, objective and secondary objective cards etc. which kind of makes me want to really make time for it again. Unbound… I’ll reserve judgement until I actually get time to play.
That mace is looks truly unwieldy, but a true test would hve to be Mythbusters style and use some sort of crash test dummy or pig carcass. I don’t recall ever running into a vicious killer wall of TV’s in any fantasy RPG setting I’ve played. My choice of weapons would have to be Kratos’ twin blades from the God of War games… probably just as likely to disembowel the wielder as anyone else in real life, but damn they look cool…
Also KD Phoenix right there… chomping at the bit for mine to arrive from that KS.
Cheers guys!
Now to get that 7 day trial linky…
The Batman costume is based off of the costume from Frank Miller’s “The Dark Knight Returns” story line. Also, I like the new newsletter idea, we’ll see how they work. Additionally send me Myth.
I haven’t joined backstage just due to the international cost, but I love the idea that for a week, we can take a sneak peak just to see what all we are missing.
Good video guys, I hope now they have made the rule book in to 3 parts the next one will just replace the last one (rules). Hopeful this will make it cheaper (if it is going to be a 2 year cycle) and greener (less paper, etc …). Also a Daedric Warhammer would be cool.
“unbound” just gives me an excuse to borrow all my mate’s riptides to finally field my riptide army 🙂
Myth the board game! Awesome!
Love backstage. Glad you guys are giving away a taste.
one comment/recommendation: it is difficult to locate stuff. You need a table of contents or something.
ex. The terrain Lab videos, I stumble upon them, I cant see a direct link to all of them, not sure if I have missed any.
Won’t be bothering to pick up a copy I’m not really a gamer but I always liked to have the rules so if I wanted to I could play. However due to the price, how soon it’s come out and how some of the rules just seem to be a big middle finger to the fluff I wont be getting it. I’ll continue to buy the models and make armies but I’m done when it comes to 40K as a game.
where do i sign up to be apart of this ghost hunt and can i be the creepy janitor “I would have gotten away with it too if it wasn’t for you kids and your dumb dog”
Batman 1 & 2 Batmobile is the best!
