The Weekender Returns! With Dropzone Commander!
February 8, 2014 by dignity
We're back for the first episode of The Weekender for 2014! First up sorry it's a little late as we've been running around like mad to add the finishing touches to Studio One.
Warren and Lloyd have been off in England filming even more cool content for the whole community and while there Warren got himself in to the latest Dropzone Commander tournament. We'll be chatting about all this and more, and if that's not enough gaming goodness for you we have XLBS coming out tomorrow morning to give you that Sunday dose of Beasts of War that you've been craving!
Happy Gaming!

Welcome back! It’s great to have the weekender back, it has been missed.
Good to be back!
I’ve only watched up to the break as I need to go out, so catch I’ll catch up later. It will need a second viewing as I get distracted by all the shiny boxes on shelves.
Anyway it’s great to see the weekender back and best of all studio 1 up and running. All this on the day I get my monthly notification from PayPal that my subs have been paid. A timely reminder of the small price we pay for all this great content.
Superb to see you guys back again. Was gutted to miss out on the Dropzone tourny but it gives me more time to get my PHR painted up.
Looking forward to getting a peek at Myth in the XLBS.
Nice set and great description by Warren of his UCM force and their battle progress.
If he is following the ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ theme, there has be be a Moriarty…
Get a table !!
Too much sausage on view !!
Glad you are back on the toob !!
Were gonna feel weird filming now 😉
Welcome back guys, so pleased to see the weekend back and well done on the studio, it looks fantastic.
About time, was getting withdrawal symptoms…
Seriously considering Dcz, leaning towards the Shaltari.
Only faction to whitewash me at the tournament. fascinating army!
I just borrowed a copy of the army book from a friend of mine and have been looking through for a faction. Was torn between the Scourge and the Shaltari, but have settled on the Shaltari. The idea of teleporting around just seems too much fun
Great show, great set, it’s like looking at my shopping list especially the old school At-At, looking forward to more, especially more Deadzone, thanks guys.
You read it here first folks – withdrawal symptoms and too much sausage.
There has to be at least one double entendre there 🙂
Are you going to make a tour around the Studio 1 for us?
Cheers
I just got my DZC starter set, I am super excited about playing my first game. Now if only I can get these 40k guys to join me.
good to see you back and the studio looks lovely (currently very jealous of that fire) pleased to be able to look forward to these at the weekend again
Welcome Back!!! We missed you!!!
GoPro3’s or even the older versions of GoPro’s – smaller than a wallet and can produce HQ video at a great cost. Size of them means they can be placed on the battle tables at floor-level angles.
Go pros are somthing were definately looking into
Sweet as!!! I hope Studio one survives these gale force winds!! Good to see you back. I like the backdrop… Gaming eye-candy….
Welcome back!
If Hawk could PHR in plastic like they did for Scourge and UCM then they’d be massive sellers. Awesome models. Sci-fi wargaming tends to be modern wargaming projected into the future. What I like most about DZC is it’s one of the few games that captures 21st century warfare, and doesn’t just feel like WW2 in space.
Yes, this. DZC’s emphasis on mobility, with the aid of transports, is what makes it feel like a really futuristic game. Most scifi battle games just feel like lining up Napoleonic era units for opposed charges, with the occasional spot of cover (and the rest are tactical skirmish games). DZC really looks like something that captures the chaos of constantly shifting lines (many of which aren’t really “lines”) and unit-on-unit skirmishes that play out within the context of a larger battle. I’m increasingly interested in this game, though my funds are just too thin to jump into it right now.
great to have you back on our screens guy’s, DZC? …………..another game i need to look at! you are doing my wallet no good!……………
cheers
AL
If you build it we will come.
It’s built 😉
I played my first game of DZC last week. I enjoyed the game although I think I would like to branch out beyond “objective-in-the-building” scenarios. Still really good mechanics and awesome looking armies. I already have a rather large UCM force, just need to find time to paint them all.
As a Myth backer all I have to say is…ARGH!!! I want it soooo bad.
Anyway welcome back guys. Looking forward to more videos.
The new studio looks great! So many games to play! I spied Space Crusade on the shelf there, so how about a look at some older games like that, maybe with a demo game perhaps? 🙂
Loving the new studio guys, spent the entire show trying to see what all the goodies on the shelves were.
I haven’t played DZC yet. I did buy a PHR starter army when they had the pre release offers on, and they are indeed some of the cleanest resin sculpts I’ve ever owned. As well produced as the Studio Mcvey stuff to be honest, although obviously very different types of models.
The brown is perhaps a reaction between the resin release and the paint thinners (tamiya spray paint has their thinner in it, and it does discolour if you mix it with the wrong thing). I have noticed a couple of my PHR have a few shiny patches which is usually release agent left on them.
I will one day get around to painting mine, and then possibly even get a game in.
I think your right, it may well be release agent!
Silly hobby mistake on my part.
Hello guys
It’s great to see you back up and running. Love the new studio and all the hard work you have put into Beasts of War. I enjoyed hearing about a new game that I have never tried and hope to see a return of the older series. Keep up the tremendous efforts. And as Will Wheaton says “Play more games!”
The studio looks great! (Please fix Justin’s mic!)
Has this been filmed in Studio One? If so then it looks great! 😀
It has indeed 🙂
Studio One looks great. I’m surprised not to see a beer tap or is that on the other end of the studio?
Beer Tap?!?!?!? I knew we forgot something!
Glad to see a weekender, really enjoyed it, the new studio looks like it will be a great base for you guys.
Welcome back guys!
Looking forward to what Studio One has in store for us in the future (My attention especially peaked when you mentioned B.A. related stuff! 🙂 )
Welcome back guys, can’t wait to see some more bolt action, just played my first game and loved it. Keep up the good work
Good to see you again guys. I like the homely atmosphere you created for the first set. Looks a bit like a manor library, but for gamers. 🙂
And please stop getting so excited over DZC. I can’t afford starting another collection right now.
Gamers Manor … I think I like that lol
Welcome back… Bolt Action eh might have to see that 😉
DropZone is amazing too, Painting more and more for this…. I love my drones too 😀
I’ve gotten into Dropzone Commander a bit, and aside from watching your demos, I’m having to teach myself it.
I’ve had about 4 or 5 games of the starter “Lightning Raid” mission now and, while I do have 1500 point armies of Scourge and UCM, I’m thinking jumping into that, with the whole commanders, command card business might be a bit too big of a leap.
Anyone got suggestions for the next step up/
The cards are not much additional complexity. Think of them a bit like magic spells you can cast in specific phases of the game. Everything you need is written on the cards, so in most cases they are a no brainer 🙂
Good to see you back up and running. I hope you had your gran on a tea I V to keep her going till she got the trolley back.
Good to have the weekenders back!
Great episode, love the new Studio, looks like you guys did a great job. I can’t wait to see more Dropzone stuff, its such great game.
Nice Breaking BAd shirt Brother Loyd, awesome show. I heard their doing a spinoff about “Better call Saul”, the lawyer, its got me excited.
Welcome back guys- our Weekends are once again complete!
Good to have you back, guys! I feel like I’m painting while chatting with friends, right now!
So stoked to see a weekender, and one with DZC too!
I love DZC, and I got into it entirely because of you guys.
Great UCM list, similar to mine but I include some wolverines and more longbows 🙂
Thanks for the PM with the tip BTW, love it 😉
As many said before really glad to have you back. Loved that you have your own studio and can start working on improvements in your own time.
My first thought was that it didnt feel comfortable with you on 4 bare chairs with nothing else. Both the cozy livingroom set and the Previous one in London felt more at ease. You might sit comfortably in those chairs (as you pinted out) but for me it felt like it needed a table and some beverages to get me in the nice relaxed atmosphere I so love with the show.
And the second thought was that the Drop zone commander segment was way too long. Almost the entire show. If you dont play the game you basically had 15 min of weekenders. For me weekenders always been about the hobby and not a specific game. The game of the week segment you have brought in never felt right for me. Thats another show, the weekenders is about what going on with you and with the hobby. With short glimpses into games you like.
felt that I needed to get that of my shoulders. I am a huge fan so dont get me wrong, Im still here watching you and cheering on you.
Love from Sweden
It will probably take a couple of weeks for us to ease into it again, we had only finished setting up the set about 10 mins before we shot this, this episode was our test footage lol
I didn’t mean to intimidate everyone with my crotch 😉
Did you watch XLBS, its a bit more like that 🙂
Great work on the new studio guys. If you are hoping to achieve interchanging sets for different games or shows then you could look into doing a pop up wall with interchangeable graphics and maybe some roller banners? The kind of thing you see at the trade shows you visit? If you buy the hardware you can get the company who’s game you are featuring to supply the graphics and you just magnet them to the stand! Simple, modular and easy to swap around.
Great job guys! Way to hang in there. Persistence always pays off! Cheers!!
Great show guys, I have also been looking at DZC and I picked up the rulebook. Warren, is there any way you could break down how much of your list was from the core set and how much you had to get to make a 1500 point list?
The starter box army comes to around 500 points, so a third of the 1500 point tournament lists, or so.
From the looks of it he added: 4 more Gladius Heavy tanks, the Kodiak, 3 Raven light dropships, 2 longbows, a Praetorian squad, 2 Archangel interceptors 2 extra Condors and a Ferrum. Which comes to an extra £108 over the box game according to Wayland.
I’ve gone an alternative route with my UCM and Scourge forces, starting from a base of 2 starter sets. I then added 4 wolverines, 2 Raven B’s, 2 Archangel Interceptors, a Kodiak and… an Albatross Heavy Dropship for £53. Truth be told, the Albatross wasn’t even needed, as I have 2-3 Condors, plus 2 Bears left spare if I expand my collection…
@compel , thanks for the reply. Quick question, do the Gladius tanks take up more spots on the Condor dropships? I have also noticed a lot of new units that are not in the rule book where do we get rules for those?
Yeah, a Gladius is the same size as a Bear APC, so a Condor carries 2 instead of the 3 smaller tanks.
You get the new units from the Hawk Wargames website, experimental rulese section.

Ok, thanks for the help I found the links and the rules, now I’m watching the demo that BOW did. I am really liking how this game looks and plays.
I’m looking forward to some Bolt Action down in Castlerock!
great to have you guys back!!!!! set looks OUTFREAKINGSTANDING!!!!!
Welcome back, and hello Studio One.
Great to see you back. Gotta catch up with the new episodes.
I do agree with these previous posters who mentioned the need for a table. It just doesn’t feel as “laid back” as the previous episodes.
Also, the audio is really off – at least for me. The overall level is very low and there’s a noticeable variation in volume depending on who’s speaking.
And please, for the love of all that’s holy, get rid of those adds! Not only have we been watching the same add for years now, seeing as the overall audio volume is so low, it’s extremely annoying to suddenly have an add blasting out of the speakers.
As for the actual content, Dropzone Commander leaves me cold, so not much interesting here. But still, nice to have The Weekender back…
Having also watched the XLBS show now, one thing struck me.
The big difference, i feel, between the old studio and this is that you now have a dark background. As a result, the video is much darker and less “light” (or perhaps “vibrant”). Also, the studio feels a lot smaller – far more cramped – than the old one.
I think what you are seeing is more contrast and darker shadows, we kind of like it, but will play with it over the coming weeks.
The studio is a bit smaller, but were also framing tighter, and making the sets a bit ‘tighter’ too.
