If you want to avoid the silly story about the Halloween Live show (contains a few beeps) jump to 3:00 in the video.
The next ‘interesting’ bit happens at the 8:00 mark – where we have a KD unboxing of an evil Lady who has built up a collection of erm… appendages…
I remember seeing these KD minis before on BoW. I was half-afraid to post comments because the thread wasn’t “backstage.” Definitely some ridiculously beautiful sculpts. Not sure about the skirt 🙂 but the bodies on these sculpts are so gorgeous . . . are you sure you wouldn’t “donate” a tongue to her dress?
[Oriskany slaps himself]
lol
Believe it or not, the “+1” I got for this comment was from my girlfriend of all people. Weird, right? But apparently she supports the idea of having my tongue ripped out and added to these costumes . . . so she doesn’t have to hear me running my mouth any more. 😐
great program again. Where is the link to wargames tournaments? Looks really good. Warren, you just need to try the forums and see what happens. enough talk, lets see some action.
Agreed on the forums!
http://www.wargamestournaments.com/
Thanks for that, another pile of terrain ordered.
“Give a man a pencil, sharpie, spraycan…. They have an inate urge to draw a Penis” James Cordon said last week on Back chat. Apparently this also applies to sculpters XD
Lots of talk about the quality of the KD sculpts, no mention of who sculpted them. Satan is by Jacques Alexandre Gillois, the Gold Smoke Knight by Thomas David.
Thanks for the info. on the sculptors. 🙂
Thanks for that, we have drum into our heads to have that info at hand!
Happy Sunday!!!!!
Enjoyed this XLBS immensely. 🙂
I jumped on-board the KD:M kickstarter as the style of game mechanic appealed to me. The amazing sculpting work and uniqueness of the pieces being produced was an added bonus. Adam Poots is genius – a very unorthodox genius – but genius nonetheless.
I am no great fan of his more bizarre works (Wet Nurse…hoo boy…) but I applaud his determination to produce incredibly designed and lovingly crafted miniatures within a genre which is generally considered taboo.
Duncan the pot painter. Yes, it was something I tsk’d at, but despite his indiscretions the painting tutorials are actually very good for learning the basics and…getting into it!
I’ve not seen all the GW vids but I only remember him getting inks (definitely shades, maybe glazes) and them weathering thingies from the pot – which I’m totally fine with.
That’s a bad habit too 😉
That’s fine. I’m a bad painter 😉
To be fair he puts the color on a palette and even dilute them with water. He even talks about the use to paint several layers instead of one heavy layer. At least he did this on the Orkanaut.
Great show guys I’m glad I signed up for backstage a couple months ago. loving all of it, specially the interviews with designers. some of the things you commented on in regards to the forums about being complicated sounded similar to your interview with Alessio :).
Justin – Eldar and Dark Eldar were battle brothers in 6th too – they don’t hate each other like dark elves and high elves, they just have more often than not a different point of view on things. think of them as like the ying and yang symbol.
That aint no cloak’o’hot dogs!
I think cross-posting in an high-traffic part of the forum is going to be vital for any system that doesn’t get a lot of traffic in its own forum. And in the spirit of the show, here’s my 7TV thread –
http://www.beastsofwar.com/groups/backstage-green-room/forum/topic/from-the-pages-of-the-invisibles-7tv-presents-division-x/.
Work has stalled on it due to a temporary bout of homelessness but it should resume soom.
Finally, we can make Frog Wars happen. There’s an aspiring game developers thread to bang out an alpha set of rules, get some concept art, then onto KS! Sorted lol.
Personally I’m still in favor of ALL posts in a hub being cross-posted in the genre forum / hub. I think I’ll have to break out MySQL and set up a demo page..
Any advice on avoiding the green-screen problem with flowplayer? I havent had any problems for a while but last 2 weekenders its been green-screening every 10 minutes or so, where i have to refresh the page and let it buffer again
I’ve set memory usage to unlimited already. Anything else I can do? Using chrome.
Its annoying because I enjoy the videos so much!
If you get a green screen while watching this program, try switching to the HTML5 player in your user profile.

Thank the sweet lord of chaos for that Warzan!
Yikes! I was planning to have a sausage sarnie with XLBS. I’ll have porridge instead.
Arrrgggg! My internet is being funny today… I can’t watch XLBS.
I had green screen today. Only the second time I’ve ever had it on the site.
I see I’m not the only one having problems… not green screen of death, but regul…..ar interruptions of… service every…. 5-10 sec…onds making this almost unw….atchable (despite the cache bar being a t least a good 10mins ahead of what I’m watching)
Sod’s effing law… it green screens me within seconds of posting the last comment!
Try switching to the HTML5 player in your user profile.
http://www.beastsofwar.com/members/PUT_YOUR_USER_NAME_HERE/profile/edit/group/3
I had that too, before and after I reloaded it following the green screen. I found that it stopped once the entire running time had loaded up.
yep its green screening for me too:-( at 50:33
Try the HTML 5 player 🙂
watching on my PC i don’t have software to play HTML 5 or at least that is what its is telling me when I switch.
I think I have bought some of the war games tournaments stuff off eBay. It stands up pretty well next to other MDF and the price is right.
Also, I think there is a zombie version of castle panic (called dead panic) that has more or less the same mechanics, but it is about keeping the zombies out of the remote cabin the players are stranded in. Both versions seem pretty cool.
Ah man, I think Castle Panic is the dullest game I’ve ever played, in the 2 games I played, a couple of blokes just worked out the card swaps and plays by looking at everyone’s open hand. Probably unfair on the game, and more of a comment on the group.
Noooo, ruined by the green screen of death!
I may be wrong, but isn’t the presence of a minus sign before the limited edition print number an indication that these may be the casting equivalent equivalent of an “Artist Proof” (from the art world)?
Why would GW possibly want people to paint from the pot when (apart from not being able to control the paint consistency):
– The paint will dry out quicker so you’ll end up throwing it away and buying another
– you’ll risk getting pigment particles too far up the brush-head, destroying the effectiveness of the brush point… meaning you have to buy another…
Oh… hang on!
I would like to see Myth featured as a game the guys play. My kickstarter will – hopefully – be arriving soon…
I agree – wasn’t Sam meant to be putting together a mini-series on it or couldn’t he handle the rule issues? I know there are lots of other sources for such videos on the web (including Megacon themselves) but a BoW take soon would be good…
… especially as the preview box was visible by Sam’s butt all through the weekender!!
12 min in and I’m crying !!!
“Oh lord the sangauinor” I dunno what Sam’s talking about *memory kicks in* OH GOD!
HTML 5 fixed the issue. Cheers @warzan
I’m very pleased to report that I had no problems at all with the streaming since I’ve switched to the HTML 5 option.
Forums plans sound fine for me and I’me not bothered about a bit of sensible cross-posting.
Hey guys, Castle Panic has been in the States for a few years. The creators recently released “Zombie Panic” version of the game. I haven’t played it,but my local game store says the twist is that one of you teammates may become a Zombie. Look for that version.
I have to say back in the day (early 90s) I to was given a painting lesson in my local GW store, and we painted straight from the pot, back when there was a reasonable amount of paint in the pot, but that’s another issue.
This lead to me painting in this fashion for years (until my break in my mid 20s), because that is how I was introduced to painting. It has since meant that in my return to the hobby I have effectively started from scratch, having to unlearn those bad habits picked up in the early days.
I think if GW are to maintain this market dominance then they have with that a responsibility to, just as Warren and Justin say, promote best practice from the very beginning. These young kids entering the hobby world through this most prominent portal are very impressionable and we don’t want to dumb down the quality of our future talent before it has a chance to flourish.
Ok soapbox oration over lol
Powerful Mini Crossbow!
I completely agree on the idea for the general genre forum for smaller-following games. My friends and I play some very small historical games (I’ve gotten some of them to sign up for BoW now! :)). Some of these games are small not because they’re new, but because they’re very old (published in the 1960s and back), yet they still have a semi-fanatical (albeit it very small) following in the gaming world. I’d never expect you guys to build a hub for these games, but it would still be fun to set up some threads, realizing that the forums would be some relatively quiet neighborhoods.
Castle Panic has been out for a few years now (The box on Amazon says 2011). Monsieur Wheaton did a playthrough of it back in 2012.
The board games Expo in Birmingham last week had a giant game of Castle Panic, with towers around 2-3 feet tall.
I did have an idea of doing Castle Panic using LOTR minis instead of tokens. The only fly in the ointment was the size of the trolls. You could easily, for example, take Uruk Hai for Orcs, then replace them with normal Mordor Orcs once they take damage.
I like the kingdom death stuff, but why a cloak of Wang is more acceptable than a model of a naked chick tied to a wheel I’ll never know…
It’s to do with the wider context that it draws on rather than the imagery in and of itself. I can’t say I’m not a fan of the dong skirt, it’s comedic in a bad way rather than horrific, but it doesn’t tap into several millennia of gender politics in the way naked-chick-on-a-wheel does.
* can’t say I’m a fan of the dong skirt
No Ben – your true thoughts were obviously delivered in your initial post courtesy of your unconscious so called ‘typo’ 😉
BTW – I note the advisory note on the home page link… shouldn’t it warn:
“Parental Advisory – warning – IMMATURE content”? :-0
I had the interrupted video playback too, but kept it on till the end. I tried the HTML5 player, and the picture quality is pants, but at least it’s in 16:9 when in full-screen, and not stretched vertically as it does with the Flash player. Incidentally, the HD option on the Flash player doesn’t really look like HD when you’re watching it full-screen, in order to see the detail of the games and whatnot.
I like how GW has made painting more accessible to new painters, but I don’t like how they’ve stopped teaching you how to achieve better results in the style of the ‘Eavy Metal team. I don’t like this focus on the Studio Painters, instead of the top quality, or box art quality, that the ‘Eavy Metal team produces. They used to teach proper painting techniques, but now they just focus on tabletop standards. The old painting guides were much better than the basic Paint Splatter stuff they’re teaching new painters today.
I haven’t used the forums on here for ages now. Maybe it’s because I’ve joined groups on facebook and I post there (and on G+, and youtube for my vids) more than I do here, because they’re places that are linked to my youtube projects, and everyone uses/views facebook or youtube. I’d like to see how the forum changes work out, especially if photos or video thumbnails can be added to your posts in the same manner as they are done on facebook or G+. If that already exists, cool! I’ll try posting my stuff on here next time. 🙂
The Tyranids fight each other does make sense from an evolutionary point of view.
I think back in the 2nd ed Tyranid codex it mentioned that on completion of an invasion, the grunt tyranids, so the termagants and hormagants, will often turn on each other. The reasoning is that is enable the break down of resources once again into stock ready for creation of new batches of creatures, and also those that survive provide the genestock for the next generation.
Now imagine this on a larger scale with two Hive Fleets, that have been evolving independently, and you have your reason for the infighting – pure survival of the fittest.
Love the ideas about forums. Would love a Primeval Abyssian hub for mine eventually, as I think my game has a niche taste but the few followers I have seem quite into it.
Wow shocked by the painting from the pot from you guys. As Warren says, when I worked at GW Altrincham between 2002-2005 we had tiles and used them. I would actually tell regulars off for using the shop paints and from the pot, because it would create havoc for us staff.
One of the best XLBS’s I have seen in ages. Chuckled throughout! It’s odd that in some GW tutorials they have painted straight from the pot as I have seen a couple at least where they have made a big thing about putting the paint on the palette. Lastly I have to agree with Justin the Ciaphas Cain novels are awesome. I have spent the last few weeks working my way through them 😀
I look forward to the day when I can stand in the BoW bar and drink ale.
Me too mate 😉
Did we just hear a teaser into a long term plan ?
I just heard a load of real estate was picked up recently in Northern Ireland, with an obfuscated planning application for something called “B****s of W*r World” theme park.
Apparantly a 3D model of this new theme park, with multiple themed zones, is under assembly by a couple of brothers in a garden shed somewhere to be revealed in installments over the coming weeks.
The refreshments hub – “Bugg**ed Man’s Bar” will sit in the centre of these areas. It will incorporate a VIP ‘backstage’ area where the barmaids all wearing skimpy clothing and special skirts made out of dil*os…
he he
I’ve liked Castle Panic ever since I saw it on Tabletop.
First time posting on beasts of war, as an experienced painter I enjoy the Gamesworkshop painting tutorial videos (the ones you have linked), although aimed at beginners I find I’ve learnt a few little techniques on how they get their studio colour schemes. I like their honesty in telling me that you can use a silver directly from the pot, but they do also state to use a palette during painting. Roman on the other hand annoys me as he doesnt go into explaining his process and instead makes weird noises.
Like how the forum ideas are progressing. Holding off on some painting competition ideas until the dust settles.
HTML 5 worked for me as well
GW painting tutorials are actually pretty good IMO. Yes, they are basic techniques but excellent for painting armies, the GW way. And the production quality of the videos is good as well. It’s easy to see they’re watching BoW as well and get inspired just like the rest of us. 😉 I’m a bit confused about your painting out of the pot comment because he is using a palette and does dilute the paint, isn’t he? I do agree that they could create better painting habits. Using the bristles to load paint on a dry palette? It’ll certainly sell more brushes and paints. 🙂
Fantastic show as always guys. I enjoy these more than GoT and that’s the truth. But you’re not killing off my favorite cast either (yet). 🙂
I like Castle Panic. It’s a really good game to play with children, especially young ones as they can really get in to it and not throw a wobbly when they lose (since everyone lost together)! Also the open hand makes it easier for adults to help them play the game, and you can back off as you see them taking control when the rules sink in. It makes a great change from the standard sort of mainstream board games.
One thing I don’t think anyone mentioned (and I saw someone say it was too easy because of this mistake) is the rules state only one card swap per player turn (or two if it’s a lesser number of players). That rule alone adds a fair bit more consideration to the game and makes it harder. You could always ignore that for really young players, but it’s fun to see them try and convince a player to swap with them so they get a kill later on!
Kingdom Death are nice, but so delicate
Enjoyed the show.
I started painting my minis in the early 80’s when model acrylics were the only thing available. Painting from the pots was all I ever knew. Until I started watching some tutorials in the last few years, I never heard about using wet pallets or not painting straight from a pot. I was pissed when gw started their trend of watering down the paints ever few years because I could never match the units that I had painted from years ago. Live and learn.
I will have to cancel subsription guys but only because I have problem with watching all backstage videos, iots stopps after few minutes and then screen turns green, and reloading and moving bar to play it from moment it stopes it doest not helps. its stopes again after couples of minutes.
I have tweaked your profile to use the HTML5 player try it now @radegast6
Yes It looks like work great thanks @warzan
Castle Panic looks awesome!
Where can I pick it up?
html5 don’t work
What are you viewing on. We don’t read minds 😉
I tried both. now it don’t show eather
Are you watching on a PC, MAC, Mobile, Tablet? What browser are you using? What Operating System – If you know.
Cheers 🙂
PC (that’s all I know)
I love having XLBS even when it’s not Sunday. Makes me feel like everything is right in the world
HTML5 works a treat for me. Thank you very much!
On the topic of forums, what about boardgames and games development? Just wondering on whether anybody thinks those two may be worthy of their own sub forums?
I am about to Kickstart a tabletop skirmish game that is comprised (almost) entirely of Harlequin factions. They will be all about fart jokes, backflips and throwing pies. There will be one super serious dark and gritty faction with hyper-religious over-tones and more hyphenated stuff so you know they’re super serious! XD
Sam re your harlequin army….how about this for an OLD idea
When they first came out the rule book had surf boards under equipment for five points as a vehicle.
They could move upto 60″ max with acceleration of 12″
I have two troops on surf boards that i robbed from judge dread surfer figures from the eighty’s
Imagine a troop that could shoot and assult from its vehicle(surf board) with a holo field giving a penelty of -1 per 10″ moved then move on the remainder of its move.
maybee you could fluff this in the unbound rules (thinking outside the box).
Troops look epic with thier sculpts on boards
Flying harleqins rule 🙂
Great show again, but was confused about the GW paint from the pot rant though. I’ve watched most of the videos and I find it difficult to recall Duncan not using a palette in any of them. He even twirls his brush on it to get a point.
Forums – I don’t think cross posting is the answer, but virtual forums might be the way to go if you can do it. I picture each post having a set of tags selected from a highlight restricted set of groups (drop downs). So say maximum of one for the game/genre and one for hobby and everyone subscribed to the respective tags would see the post in their own virtual forum.
Examples: post about painting 40k Orks, you tag it with the max 2 tags of 40k and painting. Anyone subscribed to painting or general hobby or 40k or general Sci-Fi will see the post in their virtual forum. Post about building general terrain would have no game/genre tag, but have a terrain hobby tag.
I already requested those two beautifully depraved ladies and their are going underway, i have to say that i love fut_n_ri ( yep, justin knows about it and i’m not gonna complete the word so that no underage person google it 😛 ). I’m highly tempted to add a detachable member in between their legs… but i probably need to be insanely mad that day in order to do it… probably when they arrive!
