Happy Sunday everyone. I am trying desperately to paint fifty ork boyz. and this is good company this early in the morning………
Nice paint sets. All boxed sets should come with tutorials like that on how to use them to achieve different effects.
Great video again guys thanks.
I have the vallejo non-metallic metal set also done by Angel, that is very good too, they are all really good packs.
I think GW’s biggest problem is that they are still of the mindset that they ARE the hobby, and it will go in thee direction they choose, rather than adapting to where the hobby itself is going.
In the ’90s and early 2000’s, at least in the UK, they were right, but the internet and the choice of games that it has brought to more eyes since then means that really isnt true any more. Smaller and less time consuming games are without question what the majority are shifting to, whether that is cost or time, maybe both, and GW will continue to struggle until they accept that I think. Sadly, the lower cost, shorter play time and low model count wargame is something they almost invented, and yet have abandoned,
If Necromunda still existed as an ongoing product developed to modern standards, I would never have spent a penny on Deadzone for instance.
The issue is you wouldn’t have had to, a lot of the gaming companies beginning to gain ground on GW are doing so by filling the niches left void by GW in it’s decision to focus on 2 systems. They may be extremely aggressive when it comes to their IP rights, they have let slip through their hands our souls and by default our wallets by not continuing with the games we all love, it is this they should have protected.
That was quite funny, BoW discovers pledge managers 🙂
If only Mantic, Martian Front, AvP, etc had that for their KS campaigns… oh, wait… never mind…
🙂 cool, I’ve not gone through a kickstarter personally so it’s great to know.
I think John particularly liked what Anvil Industry had done with there Afterlife pledge manager, so it seemed like a good idea to have a chat about it from the laymans point of view. It may help some others like me pop our kickstarter cherries lol.
@witteridderludo out of the pledge managers you’ve maybe used did you have a favorite?
Happy Sunday!
Happy Sunday everyone. Im soo happy that the Batman miniatures game is getting some coverage. Underplayed little game 🙂
‘Custard bum’.
LMAO.
I think the biggest problem of GW is just that 10 years ago i was only able to purchase GW models cause there werent any other brands in my town. Now, with internet, with global e-commerce you have almost endless choices. To play a GW game you need a large table, a lot of miniatures and a lot of time that right now, with a job & a wife i dont have. When i was a teenager i could spend a full day playing now i cant. Now my wargaming days are spent on small skirmish games and my mine doesnt go to GW anymore.
The same happens with a lot of other gamers i know. We have ground up, and now that we have money (a bit at least) we dont spend it on GW as we did.
Happy Sunday. Im going to have to watch most of this tonight as I’m off to Warfare shortly to get in supplies for the winter. You can never have enough resin, plastic and lead.
Those paint sets look great…. Would like to a follow up on those pin markers Justin :o)
the majority of Hobby Kickstarters have had pledge managers.
some it is as simple as writing an email style or filling a spread sheet, and some are more like a custom webstore.
Mantic started with a fancy Google Spreadsheet for their first and evolved. from there.
Mierce setup a special section on their webstore and apply the credits, with special pricing.
there are companies that have made pledge managers, like fundafull that do it for multiple different kickstarters, as a third party/proxy.
this is not new but has been happening for a long time now.
Hmm, I think that model making app could offer us something really useful from a painting perspective.. as long as there was a P3 / Vallejo / GW pallette that you could apply and they toned down the surface reflectivity so you could get something to an accurate colour representation.
On the model making side, I think it would be useful if you wanted to scratch build a vehicle and you needed a diagram that you could essentially exploded / un-explode at will.. but since some / most (?) of the models in the store appear to be from existing, real-world kits anyway I’m not sure how useful that would be unless nobody made that kit in the scale you wanted.
As presented, however.. and considering the asking price for the in-app purchases.. bleh.
something *close* to an accurate colour representation, I mean.
Great show guys. Love the paintsets. They are going on my xmas list. 😀
That episode was so much bun!
I mentioned at the end of my GenCon report that GW were very conspicuous by their absence. It did seem to me then that they were missing out by refusing to come out of their own little bubble. I’m not sure whether big box board games are the way to go. The ceiling for those products is very much lower than for minis games. That was apparent in the the survey of North American gaming revenue that ICv2 released in the summer. I do think that the barrier into the GW hobby is too high for many potential consumers, probably higher than its ever been, and they do need a greater focus on instant gratification. Squaring that circle with selling lots of product is their challenge. I think it can be done, and their first hurdle is to get out of the mass battle mindset which has seen them try and offset lost sales by pushing that model as far as it can go.
I’ve got a fair number of Vallejo paints already and I find every time I look into getting one of their new painting effects sets I’ve already got a few of the paints. I’d love to get copies of the instructions but can’t justify spending money on paints I already have just to get them.
Sitting at 12 kickstarter backed projects now and every one i have backed so far has had some pledge manager involved. Mantic usually set up their own pledge Manager but others use Backerit which is becoming more common. Allot of pledges are X ammount of miniatures or faction starters and then extra addons so you can lock in and adjust pledge levels as the kickstarter progresses. The pledge manager is also handy if you want to add a bunch of extras on after the Kickstarter ends and didn’t have cash free when kickstarter was on.
Allot of times i have had extra miniatures or freebies added on after kickstarter ends with people increasing total pledge level during pledge manager.
I must say i am surprised how little you guys know about kickstarter (especially Loyd) given you promote so many great products that run through kickstarter. Even if you aren’t backing them for much allot have the $1 pledge or pound level and posting something in the comments of ones you feature could increase your viewer base,
This was my bad here. I’ve only backed two and one does have a manager and the other doesn’t. So it was me being in the dark on the subject, 🙂
Now I need an airbrush AND more paints! Would John mind doing a tutorial on the pigments he uses and how they are applied?
Vallejo painting sets are really god.
I want Liam Neeson.
To be fair he is a very desirable man.
Cheers Lloyd, now I’ve got to head off to Gregg’s! Good show especially interested in the paint sets, V nice!
Great video guys
Years ago (and I mean YEARS ago) I was writing software that did 3d rendering, allowing people to manipulate shapes. I then had the fantastic idea “hey, I could render lego bricks and people could build stuff” but my idea was shot down by various people whose opinion I trusted saying things like “why would anyone want to do that?”
Well a few years later Lego Creator software was created followed many years later by MineCraft etc.
Think about it. You can now specify your own lego model by building it virtually and getting it boxed up.
Imagine if there was a company that made up lots of components, released an app that allows you to build your own model, click a button, get a price, pay online and a few weeks later a box drops through the post with the components? Eventually you could send your design to your 3d printer…
The future is coming… open your minds.
You keep mentioning GW. They STILL haven’t released an army list builder linked to their store:
1. Build an army list (you still need a Codex to understand the rules etc.)
2. Tick which bits of the list you have
3. Press a button to create a wish list
4. Order it from the store…
How easy is that!
happy Sunday!
I’m really looking forward to the Batman miniatures game – but I’m a little afraid as I’ve heard that casting quality is kind of poor. So winning the starter set would be great! 🙂
I’ve got a lot of their minis and the only bit of casting I wasn’t happy with was on one of the gloves of the Frank Miller Batman. The gaps between the ridges were filled in and there wasn’t enough definition to know what to file away. Other than that they’ve been great.
I would like to add, that although I have many of the minis, I don’t have the League of Shadows 😉
Hi all.
Another excellent show. It was interesting listening to Warrens thoughts on the new ceo.
Like John I use to hate apple, now I would be lost without my iPad. Much better than any other tablet.
Like the new paint sets, will look out for them.
As I have said before about other shows, let’s have one a month without Warren, it’s a completely different type of show.
Best wishes to mother and baby.
Mantic did similar for Dungeon Saga , am so looking forward to delivery!
I’ve recently decided to jump on the Vallejo bandwagon because I prefer the dropper style containers. I know what you mean about feeling perhaps a little overwhelmed by their range. These box sets are a great idea!
Paint sets looked rather interesting, just brought a bolt action army, and a set of paints from warlord, Decent paint!
Good show Guys
Hope Knight Models do a Marvel game. So many more heroes to choose from.
Do you mean that there’s more combined, or that Marvel have more than DC?
lovely new paint set of vallejo :O
Happy Sunday guys.
The Wolsung kickstarter had a good pledge manager as well.
Cool looking paint sets as well.
It sounds very similar to how mantic tend to do their kickstarters. – They also have a “$1” pledge level quite often, that lets you add things to the pledge manager later on if you weren’t interested in the standard pledges but just wanted specific models.
Warren had some interesting points about direction for Workshop, but think there’s room for both.
There are those of the bright shiny toy syndrome hopping from game to game, however collecting gamers are also a feature of the industry so room for both.
But workshop could do with going back to more accessible games such as Battlefleet Gothic and Necromunda, maybe making skirmish rules to publish with squad in a paint set for its gaming Warhammer/40K in 40 minutes it published once.
They need a game that is both accessible and compels a significant and constant stream of future purchases. The skirmish game model only does the first one which is why they were dumped when LotR took off. Their best bet is finding a way to replicate the CCG model (sans the blind buys) in a minis game.
First one I’ve watched since upgrading to backstage and am glad to have found my new coffe and croissants Sunday morning viewing.
I’m a big fan for those Vallejo sets. I bought the Black and white one, as I plan on painting some Dwarfs in Templar colours at some stage of my life. I’ve also fallen in love with Dark Grey and Neutral grey, such nice colours.
Señor Ragú!
Happy Sunday.
late congrats to Warren on the wee one.
Liam Neeson! I have a very specific set of skills. Skills that make me a nightmare to models like you. I will find you and I will paint you!
Pledge managers are very common these days. I think Kickstarter actually has a limit to the number of surveys etc. that can be sent out after a project has funded, so pledge managers sidestep that problem nicely while still allowing people to add to or join a project.
As for GW, while their days of market dominance are IMHO behind them, I wouldn’t count them out yet. They’re always only one excellent rule set for 40k away from dragging back most of their lapsed players. Hell, if they resurrected most of their Specialist Games range I think many a gamer would flock back to them.
Also, please chuck my hat in the ring for the League of Shadows set – they look awesome!
Happy Sunday! Great show guys.
GW should re-release some of their old box games they used to have a nice collection
Dreadfleet was (is) a good game; but GW were not prepared to see it as a continuous product set. They could have sold a reduced ‘starter set’ followed by various expansions based aound the WHF world.
Happy Sunday from Denmark. Great show guys ! Notthing better than beast of war weekender +xlbs while im painting. Now i have the urge to see the batman movies!
60-odd projects in, almost every tabletop project I’ve backed has had a pledge manager. Kickstarter only allows one survey to your backers after a project, and it has very little flexibility. Anything beyond shipping info and a few basic “how many of thing X did you want?” questions gets unwieldy to the point of useless. Pledge managers answer that, while also allowing for pledges like “$X credit toward anything you want” and after-project buy-up or buy-in. Some established companies build it into their web store (Soda Pop), some do custom development (Mantic), and there are third-party services that specialize in providing them (Fundafull, BackerKit). Many creators also allow the pledge manager funds to go toward stretch goals not met during the campaign.
Happy Sunday.
Thank you for the rather epic mention Justin 🙂
I’d love to see something along the lines of what Monzo have done for GW, that would be a whole new hobby in itself for me!!!
Great show again guys, any chance we can win those paint sets too?
@warzan I enjoy being constantly “delighted”… that’s the word you were looking for. I’ll accept being constantly “pleasured” – let’s not mention solo-gaming… but the term kicking around the world of marketing you were looking for is “delighted”..
I thought from the previews of Romain’s skintone tutorials in the weekender that Romain has been painting ‘buns’ on some of the more scantily dressed models. 😉
I like the idea on ‘Monzo?’ very much. GW could do it, but it’s pretty innovative so they won’t, they don’t even have a digital library for their instructions. Even if they did do it it wouldn’t be cheap. What they could do is include a code with a kit so you could unlock the digital version for the app. It would be great for kit bashing and paint schemes, it would even be amazing – which is why they’ll never do it 😉
Regarding the CEO it is a safe ‘stay the course’ choice – should we really waste our time pretending or in the hope it’s any other? I think they are already in trouble and instead of innovating and acknowledging any criticism they are determined to undermine consumer good will with BS like the C&D they just sent you. See that kind of thing makes me want them to screw up so bad that someone comes in and buys them, to change them for the better and replace their despotic, paranoid regime with a progressive one that understands and even asks what their customers want, even if it’s just in general terms – just to get input to make a more informed decision. The more gamers that leave GW, even if not forever but just to try other things, which must be a lot by now considering the amount of small, successful games and miniature lines that keep cropping up, the less GW will make, both in terms of new and old custom for it is the gamers that spread the word to begin with (as they do no advertising at all), to their brothers/sisters, friends, sons/daughters etc. If all the majority has to say about GW is ‘they’re mad, cost a lot, games are still fun but not as good as this other game/games I’ve played’ what’s going to be the result? The result is the likes of a 10,000 signatured petition basically pleading with them to focus on the games to make them better, as that’s what sells the majority of models – if a model or army sucks in the game it is less likely to sell, or less likeley to sell as much as it could, it’s as simple as that sadly.
It’s like they’re trying to beat the internet. As certain celebrities know, the internet will always ‘win’. Their releases will always get leaked, no matter what they do. Before when they released previews a month in advance, no one cared enough to leak them as the images were already there. If it bothers them so much they should just be open and honest and build excitement with their own leaks, instead of allowing the internet to leak fuzzy phone images – that way they’d build good will through sharing what their customers may want with them – it’s SIMPLE (sorry for the caps but how hard is this to grasp?).
It’s getting to the stage where I wish I had the money to pay several thousand people to march on their HQ and repeat the football chant ‘You don’t know what you’re doing’ for five minutes, record it, upload it to youtube, send it to the press and then let them think on that for a while.
Sadly the only choice GW leaves us is for mugs like myself banging our fingers on keyboards and their heads against high explosives in the vain hope that they’ll realise all the mistakes they’ve made and the bad attitude they continue to tout as if they’re some sort of untouchable empire that looks down on its citizens – we all know the result of that throughout history. Honestly I wish I could slap the board and senior management round the collective face (hard) and teach them the meaning of the words ‘humility’ and ‘respect’, followed by a simple, monosylabbic power point presentation of why they have screwed up so much, complete with pie charts, cartoons and balloons with an appropraitely sized pin to keep getting their attention.
They are simply too insular and have become arrogant in their success without innovating their main product – their games or game choice. The miniatures are what we need in order to play their games and immerse ourselves in their IP – they are a means to the end of playing games. GAMES Workshop – G.A.M.E.S – for feth’s sake. There’s no facepalm big enough is there?
Jesus guys, I’m sorry, that’s WAY bigger than I thought it was 🙁
We understand – sometimes you just need to ‘vent’
It was a good read mate… Don’t worry about it 🙂
Good to c roman is back for some tutorials. Cant wait to c what he does with the kod models
Liam Neeson please come stay at my house, I have room for your ninja vigilante chums too. Buns all round.
Another great show
Been dreaming about this Batman game for quite some time. Who knows this will be my entry point?
On the difficulties of getting into 40K after being away for a couple of years, I do agree with you. I actually find it to daunting to start again. To high entry cost when it just comes to the rulebook and a codex. For the same price I could get 1 rulebook and two starter armies in other games.
And Loyd, please watch Romains painting tutorials, they will quickly get you up to speed when it comes to painting minis. I have learned tonnes of stuff from watching them. Before I didn’t get the difference between a wash and a glaze, now I do.
Happy Sunday. New paint sets look cool.
I’ve backed maybe 50-something Kickstarters now so I guess I know something about this…
The only thing Kickstarter provides is the initial backer survey. But it’s so limited that most projects these days only use it to verify your shipping address.
Anything beyond that is up to the project organizer. I’ve done plain emails, filling in excel -sheets and emailing those in, special codes that work in the organizer’s regular webshop and up to these pledge managers, which used to be totally custom-coded but are offered as a third party support tool these days.
Which is yet another clue that Kickstarter has evolved into something it was not meant to be. You were meant to chip in to make a cool project possible and the backer survey was just there so you could tell which size t-shirt you wanted to advertise the project and claim a bit of the coolness.
The ability to up your pledge after the project is also totally up to the project organizer. I’ve seen some that think their KS prices are so low you can’t be allowed to buy more, while others are more than happy to sell more stuff… Quite frankly I’m a bit baffled why Kickstarter doesn’t clamp down on this, because they’re not getting their cut out of any money collected after the project. I mean eBay is very strict about that sort of thing…
great weekends worth of shows guys! Loads of content and loads of laughs!
I have always loved the batman mini’s but I wished you’d gone a little more in detail about the rules. I just can’t see how batman can take on thugs armed with machine guns in a tabletop game… Is there some sort of stealth mechanic or something?
It worries me somewhat that after 3+ years of Kickstarter becoming a factor in gaming, the chaps only just now seem to be getting to grips with the ideas of post-campaign Pledge Managers……
Happy Sunday!
Great video, but this week I’m just commenting for the price. I need that set so I can justify buying all the rest. 🙂
I loved seeing the Vallejo set mini-unboxing!
It’s a really clever way of putting sets together and not nearly as much of a shotgun (or hand grenade, maybe) approach as I went for. My paint set rebuilding exercise involved picking up the full set of Vallejo Game Colour, which was a bit of overkill because I don’t use half of them.
Can’t believe that GW are still playing the C&D game with you… sheer lunacy.
As my mother says, “it’s like cutting off your nose to spite your face”.
Happy Sunday!
I actually like some of those paint sets, I’ll have to try to find them locally.
Paint sets look great. I may have to pick one or two up.
I’ve been thinking of either the batman or Marvel miniatures as a way of introducing my boys to the hobby more, League of Shadows boys would be a good set to show off whilst watching the Dark Knight
Great job guys.
I understand what Warren mean. I was a heavy boardgamer before I’m throwing myself to wargames; at that time, buying new boardgames is fun because it is a new challenge and new rules I can get my head around (and find loopholes, always fun!). But eventually I think to myself that wargames suits me better because my investments tend to last longer.
However, I really think that the market is not necessarily going towards boardgame. I think each genre has its own fan that doesn’t really mix: Boardgames attract people who likes changes and variety in their collection while Wargames attract people who likes more stability. I lean towards Wargames now because I’m tired of learning new rules every month and enjoy honing my skill in my favourite game.
Of course there are those who dwelve in both worlds, but what I’m saying is people will have tendencies to one side and the only way they can change sides is if they have a change of personality; and I think that it’s not an common or easy thing to happen.
Good on ya, Lloyd. You were a fine host, I much approve. I’ll have to check out the chipping effect. Tell Justin not to sex up the show with all his floozy figurines! But thank him at the same time.
Great show! I’m a bit baffled by GW attitude towards the publicity of their products, I’m guessing that they’re just really paranoid that any coverage is going to be negative…
Best wishes to Mum and Baby Warren and ofc yourself, thanks for the pin counter mention, i got my name in lights yay although they were not neon flashing lights so bit disappointing 😛
i will pop some photos of my finished pin markers for you guys to have a look at soon, great show and Happy Sunday 🙂
I hope the new CEO of GW does make some changes for the better. Right now there are several companies making better miniatures and there are a lot of better rule systems out there, but nobody can compete with GW when it comes to the depth of their IP. I would say that it’s the strength of the IP which keeps a lot of people onboard, despite poor miniatures and crappy rule sets.
If I was to indulge in total wish listing, I would love to see GW do a total revamp of 40k, change the rules and scrap “heroic” scale for some miniatures which actually start to reflect the art and fluff of the setting … Which is gorgeous. I’d love GW to bring back their specialist games. Id like them to ensure that their games can be played with a few minis and can slowly be expanded over months or years, (FW’s Horus Heresy Book 3 has a great system for playing campaigns with “strike forces” of just a few hundred points, which deserves to be released as a game in its own right or at least an official 40k supplement).
Perhaps the new CEO will ask himself why some people hate GW but don’t hate Forge World, why some other people quite like GW but effing love Forge World. Could it be that Forge World communicates with its fans, shows us what they are working on, and most of all, feels like they are actually putting their hearts and souls into what they do?
Believe it or not GW already know that. In fact, FW serve the purpose of catering to consumers who want to be engaged with that way. If GW hear anyone saying they don’t like GW but love FW then it’s job done as far as they’re concerned.
“I would say that it’s the strength of the IP which keeps a lot of people onboard, despite poor miniatures and crappy rule sets.”
This is also something GW are aware of. They’ll probably disagree with the poor minis and crappy rule sets bit, but they know it’s the IP that drives the sales and their business plan is built on it. It’s much more important to them than making good games and quality minis.
There are companies that exist to provide pledge managers, most games kickstarters use some sort of post KS pledging facility, as someone has already mentioned Mantic routinely do it and even accept new backers once the KS has closed but before the pledge manager does so, it’s a very business as usual thing.
The future growth for GW lies in building a community, and this means both an physical community through the high street presence and events as well as an online community. Yet for these to work there needs to be engagement with the community, remember that community will be the customer base. If a company dosen’t engage with it’s community, then it’s likely a large proportion of that community will in turn ignore the company. This will result in a drop of sales, lower player retention and bad word of mouth, which will result in a drop of initial new hobbyists.
There are now more potential rivals that are in a position to offer an alternative to the GW experience, this may be considered by some to be a lesser experience, but if this alternative is engaging with its community then as far as the hobbyist is concerned it’s a more enriching experience. Having a superior product is unlikely to persuade someone, price plays a big role, along with a sense of community. In the past the high street presence acted like a hub in locations, where customers could get the full experience, that included informative sales advice, hobby advice, a place to meet and engage with like minded individuals as well a sense of being involved at a local level with company and the hobby. Currently you walk in to many stores around the country and that’s been lost, it’s become faceless, a point of sales that has lost it’s soul. This is one of the biggest complaints within the community, the community experience has been lost. Unlike other high street outlets a GW customer expects a different experience when they walk in to a high street store, there is an expectation that a GW store is different to other retail outlets. When that expectation isn’t met then there is a potential to lose that customer.
Going forward GW needs to consider the life cycle of a gamer; research needs to be conducted in to the life style of a GW hobbyist, so that the company understands at which point a hobbyist will either become a veteran or leave the hobby. Then armed with this information a strategy can be developed to retain more of those who could/will potentially leave the hobby.
understanding who the customer base is and what they care about is vital for the company moving forward. In recent years GW has become to many members of the customer base/community a faceless entity. Needs culture needs to change, the biggest asset any company has and this includes GW more than other organisations are the customers.
Red Bull are content kings in the world of industry, GW has the potential to become the RED BULL of the table top industry. It has an inhouse content/studio team, use them. Make GW a brand that is globally recognised and not just by the gaming industry.
Online customers have high expectations, and if these aren’t met, or exceed them , then those customers will look for an alternative. This will be an alternative supplier of the product or they purchase an alternative product from a competitor. Online shopping is far easier today than it has ever been. It’s really easy to find suitable products at the touch of a button, so it’s imperative that a company’s online presence has the sticky effect. Up to 75% of customers are accessing retail via a device to purchase, or are using online as part of the their retail process.
Retail stores use POS as a way to attract potential customers to a particular product, in the same way online content should be utilised in a similar manner. It should not only enrich the customers experience, but also help them make choices on which product to purchase.
Going forward GW needs to place the customer at the centre of any future retail strategy both high street and online. This has to also differ from the normal retail experience, it has to have added customer value that makes them feel part of the GW community.
Ohhh, Batman minis… another skirmisher in my collection?
commented for the prize.
Ork flyer!
Don’t know what John’s talking about really, pretty much all campaigns allow you to add after the KS closes. You can still get the Afterlife KS prices and options even if you missed it.
Would love to give the Batman game a go.
Re the GW CEO, I think “poisoned chalice” is the right term. In this day and age a massive retail chain is not an asset. A business model based around this cannot be sustainable.
Much as I don’t generally like being in GW stores, it’d be a shame to see them disappear from city centres; but bigger chains than GW have fallen by the wayside in recent years.
With the Batman stuff can anybody point me in a good direction of what sort of buildings I can explore?
On the Saturday show they mentioned the Wolsung buildings as appropriate. Knight are also apparently going to release some scenery.
To these suggestions I’d add the City Block range from Sarissa, assuming Knight models are 28mm; if they’re, say, 32mm the Sarissa ones may be a bit small.
Developed an interest in the Batman game, just not enough yet to drop cash on it.
We should just have a painting show with John and Romain.
Gw used to do lots of smaller games. They should bring some of them back .
Nice paint sets, congratulations to warren and his lady for the arrival of Max hope all goes well with the little one.
As for GW well one of the first things they need to look at is their pricing structure its madness, one shouldn’t need to sell a kidney in order to get an army.
Like the paint sets.
Great watch as usual guys. Thought those paint sets were intriguing.
its painful to listen to him not get how glazes work
Yes, isn’t it ? Don’t get me wrong, Lloyd is a friend, but there is nothing as apalling as willful ignorance.
Well that nearly descended into a bun fight
Best video show on the internet
Great show like the new paint sets will be looking in to getting some to replace my old dying paints.
Good show.
good app but I HATE apple stuff.
Aahhh man..that was the funniest xlbs in a long long while… cheers 😀
those are some sexy looking ninja’s
Good show guys.
Although I get the feeling that Lloyd on purpose, sabotage the stuff that he’s not really interested in. Or it could just be me not getting the humour.
Interesting thoughts on GW getting into “Board games”.
however…GW loves to talk about “the Hobby” which is the antithesis
of your thinking…GW wants players to buy expensive models and spend
many hours painting and fewer hours playing.
that said I would LOVE a Mordheim board game.
You can’t keep him from talking about tanks and then give him a tank paint set…..
Loved it!
Interesting idea for GW about the board games… I think the key GW need to learn is not so much to develop self contained board games, but periodic ‘splash’ releases. So these could be board games with miniatures, or they could be skirmish wargames using miniatures of the same scale as their games, or they could be new wargames with entirely new scales and types of miniature (like BFG).
It makes no sense for GW to be losing this chunk of the market to its competitors.
In a way GW’s mistakes have been great for the community though, as they’ve opened up quite a large space for others to fill, and created price expectations that allow the range of competitors to undercut them OR offer high quality premium figures.
Those vallejo paint sets look really cool; will have to go hunting for some more information about them.
Would love some more videos about airbrushing! Hint, hint…
Love the show like always, the paint sets i’m going to be purchasing.I’m from Michigan and it would be a dream to hangout with you guys one day and just bullshit about all games and the hobby.
love ya like brothers
Loved the paint sets. Adding those to my xmas wishlist 🙂
Entertaining show guys.
Just my .02 re GW. A few things they could do to improve their financial viability. Reduce the number of hobby centers down to a few key ones in each country and handle stock movements through independent retailers. Would save shop rental and staff wages in an area where you are not really value adding. This would free up funds to revamp the website and promote tournaments etc to drive/encourage interest, as well as tooling up shipping and logistics at the back end of house to get stock shipped directly to consumers via mail order as quick as possible. As their competition doesn’t have massive retail overheads they are currently able to underprice GW.
With regard to current product, have some dedicated external hobbyists sign an NDA and play test the rules prior to release, should save the embarrassment of the obligatory errata issuing 4 months after the new rules revision. Next up, set up all the army stats and abilities when the new edition is being formulated to avoid ‘codex creep’. And please stop re-writing all the fluff, by all means have a 5 or 10 year plan for fluff where characters are introduced, gain power, come to prominence and achieve great deeds before their heroic demise, but when major campaigns/battles are expunged from the pages of history it does irk a few of us old timers… We’d love to hear great stories moving forward, but just leave the past as is 😉
Finally, both 40k and fantasy need a game similar to Necromunda or Mordheim as an entreport where new younger players can afford to buy in to the hobby, and not have to paint more than a dozen models to play. There are plenty of other high quality skirmish level games out there and GW will lose market share if younger gamers are picking up Warmachine or Infinity simply because they can’t afford a full army and/or don’t want to paint 200 minis.
Sorry, rant over, I’ll show myself out…
great show guys, glad i became a backstager, this is way better than endless issues of wargames mags that end up taking up space i could have models! so thank you for that guys thank you for giving me my space back! 😀
Another great show. Looking forward to next week.
Great show guys. Those Vallejo sets look like a great buy. I can’t wait to see if they’ll release them in Australia.
I’m not sure why John is so astounded by the whole you put in a £1 on kickstarter then after if finishes you can up what you want as this is a standard for almost everything I have done, Relic knights, SDE, Wolsung and ones run by Mantic, whats so revolutionary about what anvil have done?
Love the new paint sets
I have backed the Afterlife Kickstarter, having backed their first one also. A great company with great minis, great rules, great updates and great service. I was able to purchase a few extras that I had not initially pledged for. The system worked really well once I read the instructions that were sent out.
Loved the show, guys. And I really love those Batman miniatures. They look brilliant.
Ragu. Mmmmm hungry now.
@johnlyons & @elromanzo – Why do we not have more videos with the two of you? That heady mix of wit and authority, culture and, erm, whatever that other thing John has is called?
The mere run-up to the paint-sets discussion is the best unboxing I’ve seen yet! I imagine it would be a huge hit in the Indian sub-continent, and no doubt the French-territories.
Get it sorted guys! That should get @dignity back to the editing suite – that back-log of content isn’t going to clear itself you know! Your new fans in Bangladesh are becoming restless…
Obviously I meant @elromanozo… apologies…
You are very sweet, thank you ! 🙂
Definitely getting some, or all of those paint box sets,
and looking forward to the skin tones tutorial, as I really need some painting practice,
Great show guys.
Yep, I want me some League of Shadows action.
A very informative and entertaining XLBS guys I did not think the paints would be very interesting however I was pleasantly surprised. All the best to Warren and family hopefully things will soon get back to something reassembling normality soon. Thanks for a great show guys
I’m gutted I wasn’t picked as the new CEO for Games Workshop!
The first thing I would have done would be to produce a Beasts of War Heads sprue for plain old Vanilla Warhammer as well as 40K. I think Romian’s head would look great on the Inquisitor Model. Or maybe as the new Sigmar.
I wonder if you lads had a chance to pick any model to have your head glued on, which one you’d pick for yourselves. And for the other guys?!
Me, as a 40k miniature ? I would die the death of the outraged Frenchman, apoplectic and indignant ! 😉
I can’t help but see Napoleon’s outbursts of rage from Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure in my head… sorry…
Mmmmm…..Buns….
What a great weekender, even if my weekend is already over watching the show.
Warren, I wish you and your family all the best for your little son Max. May the force be with him. 🙂
Honestly, I’m not so interested in what GW is doing but more in how they are doing it. I thought there was a change in communicating with their fans, customers and with Beasts of War in special.
I agree! I have no interest in their games or minis anymore, they have annoyed me to the point where I almost want to see them fail. However their slide towards the dark side makes great drama and interesting tin hat conversation !! They should leave B.O.W alone though I might do a tearful you tube appeal to them ;D
Great show as always guys.
Happy Sunday although it’s took me until Monday to watch this one.
Good to see Romain & looking forward to more painting tutorials.
Need to grab some of the Batman figures soon.
Cheers
those paint sets look awsome there a nmm one ive bean eying up
Great show guys. Keep up the great work
Loved the show! Loved the paint sets, for a beginner like myself that makes life so much easier. Last year we spent quite a bit of $$ just getting our paint inventory up and we were searching through the colors…..this would have made it so much easier! I learned quite a bit listening to both John and Roman talk.
Loved the new Batman set – looks fantastic.
Have a great week 🙂
Lovely show, cheers!
I would love to see John and Romain paint the same model, perhaps some large dreadnought or similar and they could apply their different techniques to them. Then compare the two models at the end. I’m sure they would both be fantastic but I would love to see how different the finished models are.
Those paint sets look aweseom!
Nice …
I’m not going to read through all the posts to check this out, but I thought a little science ought to come into your life’s. Part of Philae’s job is to work out exactly what Comets are made of. We have long described Comets as dirty snowballs, we believe they are mostly ice and dust, as they approach the Sun the ice melts and a tail is formed of the dust and metled ice streaming away from the comet (actually always directly away from the Sun, so it can point along the line the comet is following. The Earth regularly passes through a number of the paths of these comets and the dust burning up in the atmosphere produces falling stars. An asteroid is a rocky lump leftover in specific places in the solar system, most are found in an orbit between the planets Mars and Jupiter, where it is suggested a planet broke up. There are some Earth-crossing asteroids and a strike from one of these MAY have been the cause of the extinction of the dinosaurs.
Master of Phsyics degree crawling back into its hole.
Should have tagged @lloyd into the above for his Physics lesson.
Vallejo’s paint sets are great. I got the face painting set which comes with step-by-steps for two different skin tones — I’ve never painted better faces.
Also really looking forward to Romain’s tutorials!
Really want them Batman minis they look awesome. I am very much a novice painter and have always just got the citadel paints from my local shop. Would buying specific boxed sets of paints from different companies make things easier or more complicated? Im sure the results would be better. Great show as always.
Nice show 😀
I’m planning to get my brother some batman minis for Christmas, see if I can’t get him back into miniatures as he is a massive batman fan. Would be awesome to have some league of shadows minis to take him on with.
I’m with Warren (I think) re: GW in that it’s impossible to know for sure what this guy will be like until he’s taken a shot at goal. I agree the outcome seems highly predictable and maybe we won’t be surprised, but I know if I’d just taken the job on I’d want people to cut me some slack for at least the first ten minutes.
Fun and funny video. As always, looking forward to next weekend(er).
finally can saw that xlbs, to many videos to see, buff
Just last week i commented that i would love to see some Batman coverage, and then this week this happens. Clearly i have powers!
Cracking show gents
Fab show guys!
The batman minis look really cool and like a new challenge to paint compare to 40k minis for example
happy sunday
Great show as always guys and I couldn’t agree more with the GW commentary
Like the Paint sets, will have to check them out.
Those paint sets look fantastic
I am a great fan of the Vallejo paint sets. I use them also for my 1/35 scale armor models.
You never have to search for the right paints, washes and pigments. Sweet those new sets!
I kept wondering “where the heck is this XLBS going?”… Still wondering 😉
Have to agree, the instant gratification of a new boardgame really gets me.
I vote for the plane ! 🙂 Looks awesome
Also, are the paint sets worth getting when you have most of the paint that’s in it, just for the tutorials? Or are the tutorials available online somewhere without buying the box of paint?
So many things – I’ve been meaning to buy a Vallejo set or two, but time and money.
Pledge managers are great, Forged in Battle have done the same thing for War & Empire as Anvil have with Afterlife (they even have the same off the shelf webstore platform :P) plus there’s an entire market filled by MyPledgemanager, Fundafull, and the best known Backerkit. The reason KS won’t expand their surveys to perform the same function is that it starts to delve into areas that could see them liable for all sorts of things they don’t want to be held liable for, so 3rd parties fill the void like in any marketplace – oh snap, is that a segue into GW and their terrible decision to stay the course and keep making all their terrible decisions? You bet! Check out the Chapterhouse case, not only is there a settlement, but Chapterhouse is still in operation and reopening next week – which means GW spent over a million dollars to get 75% of their supposed IP claims dismissed as fictitious by a judge, had to pay a cash settlement to the company they were adamant would be put out of business by this case as a warning to others, and likely had to surrender the judgment they received for the 25% of instances where Chapterhouse was found in violation, a fine they had been trying to bully them with in asset freezes.
So yeah… rant over. Batman, amirite? Looks cool.
I only have one Batman the miniature game, is the Arkham City Batman, but I would love to have more so I can finally try out the game.
I haven’t had that much of a problem filing the pieces as previous comments indicate.
My comment …. GW is deadman walking.
Great show
Just got to finish watching it now mid week. Great to see Roman in company again, he brings out the entertainment.
Which reminds me, when are we getting around to the turn 8 AKA whatever ya like live hangout ?
Ive been around long enough to remember the good old days of Daryll in nipple armour. Lets do it again.
Thanks again lads.
Another great video. My First backstage video 🙂
I love Beasts of War!
Cool show. Loved the painting parts
next GW will put a gagging order on BOW so you can’t even mention their name or products. With new companies springing up and I noticed a few embracing 3D Modelling – give it a few years GW will lose it’s mantra of the best looking miniatures around.
