Remember if you have trouble watching this(The screen goes green etc) Go into your profile and in ‘account settings’ there is an option to default to the HTML5 player.
You can also turn ads off too while in there BTW 🙂
Actually having wrote that, I can’t seem to get it to play at all lol
Can someone confirm if it plays for them?
And yes it plays, just needed a refresh.
It does indeed play! Thanks for more early morning entertainment 🙂 Oh and I blame you lot for making me want to invest in Dust now :'(
No more green screen? This is an emotional day.
No more green screen! That is awesome, I was on the verge of cancelling my backstager purely because the last 2 months of XLBS have taken me about 6 hours per show to watch, sometimes restarting every 6 minutes.
This day, however, the screen at no point did green, and I am happy once more! Great show, got a 2 yr old girl and I’ve been wondering how to broach gaming with her when she’s older. The wife isn’t keen I don’t think, must convince otherwise……
You mean its not the Hulk standing in front of the camera?
Took me a while to solve the green screen! 🙂
Happy Sunday fella’s, if this big participation game happens for the 40k campaign ill have to bring my warhound along, every apocalypse game needs titans 🙂
And yeah, working for me.
Now its not working, where’s flowplayer gone? @warzan
@deaddave HTML5 will be our default player from here on, but… you can still get flow player by choosing ‘flash’ in your profile. I have set that as your default, can you test it now to see if its better for you?
Wooooo, back again lol
Happy Sunday but can’t get it to play on my tablet!!! Oh well I’ll have to watch on my computer later.
got it to play but it green screened at the 33 minute mark for some reason, right about when you said you had storage issues
I have tweaked your profile to use HTML 5 – give it a try now
Yep, no amount of refreshing his helping yet 🙁 was hoping to watch quietly before my daughters realise I’m awake and the Father’s Day chaos begins! Lol.
Off to Valhalla Wargames Show in Farnborough today – a great way to spend Father’s Day with my girls 😀
Made a tweak to your account, try that now.
Worked thank you. Will sort a pressie for you too via Rob from Prodos. Can’t just treat Justin now can I?
Why oh why is Flow player so crap. 🙁
keeps pausing forcing a refresh. Forcing me to start at the beginning again due to not being able to skip forward.
I have now set HTML5 as the default player, we will be addressing this with something more permanent soon
Thanks. Finally managed to watch it all the way through.
Great episode that I didn’t expect to enjoy as much as I actually did.
Gutted about not having one next week though. lol
Have refreshed a few times but still no cigar. Also can’t see anywhere in what I thought was account settings to default to HTML5 so I must be looking in the wrong place. 🙁
I’m guessing your looking under My Account -> Settings, which is where I went first, but it’s actually under…
My Account -> Profile -> Edit Profile -> Account Settings
Warren, Hasbro re-released this Crossbows and Catapults in 2007. For the release they had the most amazing gaming table to play the game. Rivers, trees and hills. Unfortunately when I sold the shop I didn’t keep the photos…..I did keep a full set. Tell me If you want photo’s. I played it as a kid in the early 80’s, around the same time castle greyskull and he-man was out. All my 5 Kids love playing this game. It is tokens everywhere when we play…….
John, you need to study the pacific theatre, it was very strategic, and desperate for the average soldier. Who knows when re-supply would occur when you are stuck on an island. It was nowhere as simple as you explained. Good Recon was the order of the day, and aircraft and carriers were the key to the pacific war. It proved the end of the Battleship.
I am aware of the in’s and out’s of the Pacific theater. But when looking at it in overview, it was a case of amphibious landings against a determined enemy who preferred ambush and surprise.
But, the Pacific doesn’t hold as much interest to me as I am not overly interested in mainly infantry and naval power.
That’s an amazing first wargame! She’ll remember it forever!
I remember my dad made up a game for me when I was a kid. You had to build a tower or a small city out of books and toys and he would do the same across the room.
Then you took turns throwing bouncy balls at one another’s base, trying to find and “destroy” the generator (a battery) which was hidden behind a building or something!
There was a lot of “ptchoo ptchoo” and rules were broken but it was amazing – deciding where to throw each precious ball!
For cool scenery in Australia, check out CNC workshop at http://www.miniaturescenery.com
They do a great range, and he has updated to a new laser.
Morning guys,
I got a frozen video @ 30mins, set to HTML 5 and restarted, all OK.
I 2nd the motion of John and his Normandy Narrations.
on the subject of kids and war-games, I got my eldest to to start playing SpaceHulk (same idea with activation usage) and then a couple of months back had their 1st game of Dropzone Commander. (aged 6+7)
Did we get the winners announced for the Wolsung Rulebooks?
Can I just wish all the Dads a happy fathers day 🙂
I’m heading out now to take the little ones to some bloody farm (open farm day here), when are we gonna get OPEN BATTLEFIELD DAY!!!! 😉
Definitely want to see the Normandy coverage. That naval and Viking stuff you mentioned sounds interesting too lol
Haha, Xbows and catapults is certainly a blast from the past! I recall seeing this on TV as a kid. Never got a copy though, hope you little one enjoys it as much as you will Warren. 😀
Watched it! (Well except the last 20 mins, but I’ll watch them later) fantastic show guys. Warren, if you want to explore the ‘gaps’ in the napoleonic era, and find more interest in the era as a whole, I can recommend the Sharpe series of books enough. I read them in chronological order rather than written order and once I got going couldn’t stop to the point I was scouring libraries all over the south for the next book every time. Brilliant, brilliant series.
yeeeeees!!!!!!! I can watch it.
On dust, I would get into it, but (and this is probably a problem for many) is space with ALL the other games I’ve got.
It might be no surprise, but I would love to see:
WWX!!!!!!!!!! 😀
Warmachine as this gets very little coverage but is a big player in the market,
Infinity is always welcome and shouldnt really need a nudge to get it on,
Carnevale as it appeared so much fun with you and Sam,
Malifaux now the new rules are out,
Dystopian Legions would be cool as we never really see coverage from this range,
What ever happened to Cutless? You guys put a lot of hard work into covering that game? How has it progressed since release?
Some demos of Warlords Games range could be nice, especially with you getting more interested in historicals Warren, hehe.
I think there should also be an element of How To episodes dedicated to different areas of the hobby, such as:
How to create a fun tournament and what is involved,
How to get none gamers interested into our hobby/games,
How to create a gaming club and forum for organising games etc,
How to design your own paper terrain and what software to use,
How to take good photos of your miniatures like this….

Anyone else looking at those MDF buildings and thinking Eastern Front?
Damnit. Now I need Soviets.
That or Berlin
Berlin. With the Brits I already have. That’s a relief!
Holy S#!T @broadside, I’m gunna be scarred for life from those PJ’s, let alone the rest of the photo. Please put a warning up before you do that again! I see your love of emoticons even goes to bed with you………..
@mattgro
Hehe, worth the click then? Amy bought them for Xmas for me, its a duck onsie, because in Nottingham we use the phase E’up me duck, which means Hello, or as it derived from Ducas, meaning Duke or Dutchess. Every day is a school day. Hehe
But the hat made it cool
I use the pack system bags and they are amazing but I would love some more as just cant stop buying new mini’s
I’m interested in seeing Johns Normandy trip!
Hey, unfortunately I got some problems with this vid.
I can´t watch the vid on firefox, endless loading/buffering.
I can on the other hand watch it on chrome, and download the file and watch it with vlc from my hard drive.
Oh and i tried deactivating all my addons but that didn’t work either.
I hope someone can help me on that, don`t want to use chrome only for the backstage vids.
Oh, I also changed the settings to HTML5.
@edgemaster, we have changed some stuff can you test again please by going here: http://www.beastsofwar.com/backstage/video-playback/
Would love to see the John’s vids on Normandy.
Forgot to ask, did I miss your announcement of who won the Wolsung rulebook?
Yes please for John’s Normandy trip and the battle of Waterloo.
Naval gaming and Vikings get my vote as well.
Didn’t you do a Dystopian wars naval battle at some point? I enjoyed that one.
I had a battleground set when I was a kid but I think it had Vikings with it and as well as the catapults it had what looked like javelin throwers that used the same ammo as the catapults but slid them across the floor it was great.
yes…..to John’s Normandy vids…
It would be great to see John’s videos from Normandy. It is something I would love to do myself!
In case there was any doubters regarding Johns D Day footage, when you ask us to post below to see the video, you flash up a picture of an 88, subliminal advertising or what 🙂
I’m up for Vikings what game are planning on featuring ?
That battlegrounds sounds really good for your little one and her first wargame cool. You will have to tell us how you got on. That terrain from Wargames Tournament looks really good and at a good price as well.
I’d love to see more of John’s Normandy trip, something I planned to do a few years ago before life intervened.
I wish we had something like a pound store in my country…. it seems like a magical place…
Gaming in the Gaps was what I did with 40k, I had more fun making an Enslaver army and Ulumeathic League – knowing they’d be more unique and not be messed with than doing one of the “official” factions. As for Historical – gotta admit, I’m more and more tempted by the Wargames Factory Samurai…such nice minis.
Not sure if it’ll help anyone but i went through Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer and Chrome to try and view the XLBS videos (as well as lots of flash reinstallling). Chromes the only one it seems to work fine on. Watching XLBS is the only reason i keep it installed!
I’m afraid this video isn’t working. Yes, I’m set to HTML 5, and tried multiple browsers and multiple computers. 🙁
Damn it. Classic “IT Ticket” moment. Literally two minutes after I post the problem, it starts working and makes me look like a jacka$$. Happy Sunday and Happy Father’s Day!
Never underestimate the power of complaining out loud when it comes to IT.
Right? It seemed to work through “magical power.” 🙂
those of us in the states may never get a chance to visit Normandy. That said i would greatly apreciate seeing videos of John*s trip!
Definitely would like to see the Normandy trip video. Also, please put up some pics of your gamer dad set up. It’s a great idea.
Going to Normandy from the States is indeed not easy. Actually going to Normandy myself in early August (I live in Ft Lauderdale, Florida). So I agree with @relic669 , it isn’t cheap, involves some very long plane flights, and serious planning with work, family, and significant others. The $$$ is significant (one of the reasons we’re going in August instead of June). Maybe this is why there are so many Civil War gamers here, the battlefields are much closer and easier to visit! 🙂
Thank you for the warm welcome. I too would love to see John’s video. I almost had a chance to parachute into Normandy with the 82nd back in the 80’s for an anniversary. But, unfortunately we had a last minute mission change. I will get there some day. Maybe even next spring when we hop across the pond for Salute.
Pacific gaming is indeed a different animal than European gaming. My group and I have tried some landing games in the systems like Panzer Leader and Valor and Victory, and less, it DOES work, but the troops densities are so high and the battlefields are so small that it can become an exercise of mass firepower to take 100 meters of ground here, 200 meters of ground there.
Pacific gaming becomes very interesting, however, if you “sideline” the miniatures and take one step up . . . out of tactical gaming into operational-scale gaming (colonels, generals, and admirals instead of sergeants, lieutenants, and captains). I know this isn’t really BoW’s thing, but when you take the larger view of a campaign to take a single island (like the Gilberts, Marshalls, or Marianas, for example), and have to work with the naval, ground, ground-based air, naval-based air, logistics, landings, etc . . . it can be a lot of fun.
I’m interested in that, can you PM me more info on this?
Sent a PM, and also an e-mail with an MS Word attachment. I think the attachment might make more sense, the PM didn’t copy/paste quite like I thought it would. 🙂
Hello world for my first post on beast of war!
For the gothic battlefield in a box subject, I sure do agree they are awesome. However, it is a pitty they stopped to do their first batch of it which were awesome and complement so well the second batch they just released which are also stunning. But, having a couple of fairly high buildings on the table sure looks cool.
Kepp on the great job guys.
Huge welcome and congrats to the new members of the BoW staff! And congrats to @redben and @commodorerob for their shout-outs on XLBS!
Same here. They did a great job covering the Adepticon and BoW could use the US con coverage and some lady gamers. Welcome to Gianna and Dawn.
Crossbows and catapults is great. I played it as a kid and now my 5 year old plays it.
There are many extra weapons you can get including triple catapults, trebuchets etc etc.
P.s. Thanks for switching the video players, I hated Flow player and it never worked for me properly – this one works perfectly and is better quality too.
Father’s Day here in North America, so that last segment was poignant. My son it also three, so I’m thinking about similar things, although my wife’s not so much into war and battles for him this early. Lego is good though, so we make submarines and tell stories of them traversing the sea. I’ll make some rules up for exploring, maybe.
Thanks gents! Welcome (officially) to Gianna and Co.!
Consider 6mm for Napoleonics Warren. Easier to paint and you can truly appreciate the grand scale of it all.
I doesnt work for men found nothing under settings : (
Yay for new team members! Yay for Gamer Dad! You mentioned Vikings were you thinking Saga? I just started my Saga warband.
Umm where can i grab the dust rules= dont c a link in the description
YES! Yes, I’m very interested to listen to the full version of John’s trip to Normandy. John already got myself fired up with all the mental-images created just from his descriptions.
@Warren: I also have a “nefarious” plan like your’s for my son. Once he’s old enough to understand, I’m gonna tell him about the universe of grim-dark future and the massive battles fought in them.. Gonna be fun…
Yes, please make a series of Johns trip to Normandy. Even if he is silently gaping at stuff half the times it should be very interesting as a background piece.
And welcome back Gamer Dad! These segments always make me smile. I’m not sure how you would feel about actually putting your kids on Beasts of War, but I would be interested to see a battlereport of this game you’ve planned. I’m always amazed at how quickly kids can learn supposedly complex systems and run with it.
During my studies I did a presentation on an online virtual world aimed at grown-ups. No, nothing dirty, unless you wanted it to be, but quite involved and complex. My teachers hardly had a clue what it was all about. It took a huge effort to explain to them what I was doing and how it worked. My peers got the general idea, but were mostly indifferent. Then one of the teachers had brought his two daughters, age eight and five, and they were curious about what they were looking at. I quickly explained the general idea and the keyboard controls. I used the English terms, which weren’t their native language. I only had to give that brief once and they were happily exploring this new environment. The oldest had found the editor and was already building her own virtual house, while the youngest was exploring all the creations other people had left, navigating the world effortlessly, pushing buttons and interacting with whatever she could find.
great show guys
Ha, ive heard johns gamer rage on WoT, must admit it is funny as hell
Damnit Ryan!!
Welcome to Gianna and Don (sorry if the spelling’s not right).
I’d really be interrested in seeing John’s coverage of his Normandy trip.
Warren, you’re Gamer Dad rocks. I’m sure you’re daughter will love it and she’ll have sparkles in her eyes for a while.
I started to play “Zombicide” with my 9 years old daughter, because she wanted to play like Dady with zombies ;-). It’s pure happiness.
Anyway, another great show. Thank you guys.
Another good XLBS guys. I would certainly like to see John’s Normandy trip.
For the private screening I would like to see Warmachine with the recent additions in action, especially like to see a game with the Cephalyx in play.
Infinity played in a sprawling neo Tokyo style cityscape.
Heavy Gear played near the ground zero of a nuked city. Where each turn means a degradation in the performance of the gears due to radiation. This would cause the gears equipment to degrade so each turn they are less accurate, reduced movement and random electronics failure. This would be a race against time that would mean the objectives have to be achieved before the radiation kills all the gears.
A night mission for Bolt Action to see the new German infrared units in action.
And finally; It would be great if BOW could negotiate with Anvil Industry Ltd to show an exclusive pre-release game of Afterlife.
My daughter is 2 y exactly. I bough her a digger with steering joystick and we are using it on gaming table. it’s on wire and has very simple move options . she paints models with me as well she has big about 20 cm solider when I do my stuff. I also let her throw dice if I play at home. and let her play with models but one at time, she is very delicate and never dropped one. Another thing is building train sets and play with it, or building castles and houses of wooden blocks, its great fun. also game I would recommend is angry birds i think is 3+ but its very easy and bits are big so cant be swallowed. that’s my experience with introducing her to hobby,
and give John trip show a go!
It’s so funny cause I’ve also found a box of this game and I’ve planed to buy it to my daughter.
Just a big Thanks for the free Dust rulebook BoW. cheers.
+1 for Johns jolly around normandy, and if you are going vikings then check out saga its a great system with cresent and the cross coming out soon, watch kingdom of heaven and get frothy 😉
Please put up the Normandy coverage. I went over there 3 years ago. It is truly an experience I will never forget. How ANYONE ever got off Omaha Beach I will never know. Keep up the good work guys.
P.S. How to play World of Tanks would be nice.
How to play (or even any opinion) for Wargame would be amazing. I’m not doing well myself.
I would like to see you guys do a LP of Titanfall.
Awesome show guys. By the way, who won the Wolsong rulebooks?
Great show, guys! Thanks for the nice welcome. We’re looking forward to being more involved. 🙂
Hamburg, Germany, Monday morning, about 1200 hours.
I’d love to see Johns Normandy Video Diary. Always wanted to visit there, but didn’t do it yet.
Warren, you seem to be just one awesome dad. When I was about 8 I had a very similar game called “Castle Winwood” or something. Had the exact same mechanic with those catapults. The few times I conviced my late dad to play with me (he was a very busy man, and unfortunately no wargamer at all) are some I my fondest childhood memories and maybe, as I think about it now, my first wargaming experience. I hope you have loads fun and create some memories to be remembered yourself.
So can we start hoping for two new shows now, Johns Armour Appendix and Gamer Dad ForTheLoss ?
Can’t wait for all this extra content …heh heh heh 😀
+1 for Johns Normandy vids
Pacific theater can be fun if you restrict yourself to 1941-1943. From 1944 onwards it becomes basically just an extended mopping up operation. The US material advantage is so huge it isn’t really funny anymore — unless you go really small scale skirmish (Bolt Action scale, up to a platoon per side). You can always get a decent game with patrol detached from the main forces.
E.g. taking Hong Kong or Singapore could be great games.
It’s also very much a naval and air game. Ignoring those components really does the theater a disservice.
My personal pet project is the Java campaign. I’ve been reading up on the sources and I’m in the process of getting models for the naval side of things.
But on this creator thing… I frequently play games where the “creator” hasn’t done a single thing in the past 10 years or more and I don’t find that a problem. I like this hobby because it lets ME create things instead of being spoon-fed pre-chewed canned laughter — if I wanted that, I’d be watching TV. Quite frankly, I dislike games where I have to constantly buy new things to “keep up with the Joneses”.
Since when did a single ruined corner count as a full building?
Don’t get me wrong, I’ve done those from scratch and cutting out the windows is a real chore. The MDF is a lifesaver there.
But personally I like intact or just slightly damaged buildings better. And every time you see those ruins on a table, the rest of the rubble has been magically cleared away. If you demolish a building so only a single corner is left standing, there should be a mountain of rubble!
I wish they did intact shells for buildings, just the basic walls and let you decorate it yourself.
@warzan, engoy it while it lasts. One day you will wake up and they won’t even want to walk on the same side of the street with you.
I would love to see Napoleonic’s covered on beasts, I really enjoy the Peninsular war and rules like black powder
Makes me wish we had kids, can’t think of anything better. Really jealous, hope it all works out well.
I introduced my youngest brother to wargaming with Crossbows and catapults. He later became obsessed with Talisman from GW.
