40K Hobby Weekend: How Can We Get YOU Involved?
July 29, 2019 by dracs
With the 40K Hobby Weekend fast approaching (August 9th - 11th) we're looking to get some ideas together as to how we can get you involved in the antics over the weekend. We want to make this a truly global experience for everyone involved.
Follow The 40K Apocalypse Table Build
So, with that in mind, we're hoping we can put our collective heads together in order to come up with some cool ideas to get you involved. We are already planning on setting up the Project System so you can put together and paint your armies with plenty of pictures and more.
How Can We Get YOU Involved?
Beyond that though, we're looking for what you would like us to do. For example...
- Livestreams - Maybe we could do live Hobby Hangouts where we look through your projects?
- A permanent running livestream from the hobby room which allows us to get involved with the action from the participants here in the studio?
- Skype Calls - Perhaps we could get you to call in and talk about what you're going, either as individuals or as clubs and gaming stores?
- Q&A Sessions - Sit down with us as we talk through the building, converting and painting of armies giving you tips as we go.
- Dedicated Chat Rooms - Either as part of the forums or via something like Discord where you can all chat amongst yourselves?
We want you to tell us how we can try and be as interactive as possible with the wider community, making sure that you all feel like you're part of the hobby awesomeness.

I will be streaming my 40k hobby weekend probably 12+ hours on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday over on twitch https://www.twitch.tv/laughingboy
I will have cameras set up for both me and my eldest son and also cameras on the gaming table. Be very call if we could do a call or some level integration but very much looking forward to it.
If we have multiple OTTers streaming from home then perhaps we could have a list somewhere of their streams, then we could dip in and out at home, at least whenever OTT isn’t live. I’ve no idea if there’s any way we can combine all the streams in to one and let the viewers pick which window to focus on when they want. It’d keep the community together and in one chat.
It is also possible to streamshare on twitch now. Having multiple people on screen at one time. I haven’t tried it but I’ve seen large E-sport personalities use them for commentaries.
I’ve no concept of how easy or entertaining that would be, but it might be worth looking at if we have multiple digOTTal tickOTTers streaming. I’d consider borrowing a camera from work and looking in to joining in, but if its hot again I might not be dressed appropriate for streaming.
Youtube keeps losing my Comments some how?? O.o
Any way…
I am for every suggestion you guys made. especially the live Hangout. Preferably during a time when us outlanders can join. Im in the US 😉
I am pondering maybe using twitch or youtube for the first time to upload progress videos to link to project page.
If it were Legion… or X-Wing…. but 40k… nah, I’m good… thanks 😉
you could paint storm troopers as ultramarines … 😉
they’re both clone armies 😀
Nope! Clone Troopers are clones! Stormtroopers are regular grown.
I am so looking forward to being there, but as for others following along, could they perhaps interact with people playing on the big table, perhaps they could throw up some random events at certain points that effect what ever section of the table or force they wish! could make it interesting and hard to plan around during a game!
I’ve got my digital ticket and I’m planning to hobby furiously throughout the weekend. So it would be cool if there was a constant live stream going to save refreshing and clicking the blog to get content updates. Maybe a camera in the corner of the room, which occasionally gets picked up and carried round for a feature and then put back in the corner (Big Brother stylee!)
Otherwise I’ll keep an eye on the blog and try to remember to update my project!
A constant live stream would be awesome, maybe with someone checking a chat stream here and there, talking to us about exciting things happening.
I’m a digital ticket holder. I’m not really sure what to expect from the weekend but I am looking forward to it. I enjoyed your Hobby Night Live remotely. A weekend based on that would be good.
I would like some kind of always on self updating chat feed. If I have to hit refresh I won’t use it as my hands will be busy painting, and I won’t want to spend long periods catching up. It’s why I don’t bother looking at the weekender chat thread.
I’d like it if every so often you showed updates for what the digital backers have been up to and offered constructive feedback and advice. It might be easier for you if we set up a WAYPN-like thread just for this weekend foor you to work from.
I am expecting (Perhaps wrongly or unrealistically?) that during working hours there will always be a livestream, even if its just of the central table with people sat there painting and chatting amongst themselves without a host or anyone talking to the camera most of the time.
Maybe you could set up a Diary Room so anyone at any time could go talk to the audience, be it Staff or visitor. They could ask for help, or moan about how Justin has been getting too close to their nudie models with his clippers. Maybe it wouldn’t get used?
I understand that you all have to head to the pub at some point. It’s a tradition, an old charter, or something. It would be nice to keep some kind of always on chat thing running throughout this time and overnight, possibly with old videos (40k uncharted? Hobby Labs?) running. This lets everyone at home also take part. Asking you to stream from the pub would be interesting, but unrealistic.
I’m open to letting people call in for help or advise. Could be interesting. Anything we try is a learning experience. This remote thing is an experiment and I think we all know and understand that. Lets just try stuff and see what works. Then we can build on that for any future events.
Having some kind of timetable up before the day would be nice. It doesn’t have to be detailed. A simple “We hope to start streaming around 1pm and expect to go on until 10 but we will see how we feel” at least lets us remoters plan when we need to come down mysteriously ill and leave work early.
Anyway, don’t stress yourselves, and remember to realx and enjoy the weekend too. Hobby is supposed to be our relaxation time, after all.
Come to think of it… I could call in and help pronounce German sounding names from the 40k (and AoS) Universe 😉
i believe the digital ticket holders get a backdrop for a standardized photography background during the weekend i was thinking that this would be a good thing to supply for all the projects that weekend to standardize and easily spot the weekends submissions easily.
what with vets fees and family commitments i was funds short for the digital weekend ticket, however i intend to be streaming the content to my gaming and painting room as long as its going and trying to work/post along progress as and when i make some. Maybe for those who actively participate and contribute for a limited time could get access to purchase a t shirt? i for one am always on the look out for more gaming related merch and its a handy reminder of being part of the Cult.
If I’m out of the hospital I’ll see about putting the Raptors “slash captain” build up as a project. Most of the parts should have arrived by now….
I think it would be fun to see more videos, if not a live stream from everyone doing their projects. It looks like there will be a variety of factions being done for the weekend so there should be a lot to cover.
I am planning on doing a project for that box of goodies that arrived last week and posting about what I hope is a relaxing weekend painting and hanging out with y’all.
Being in the States most of my hobby weekend will be done later or earlier than what the crew and guests will be doing at the gaming hall.
So projects and such will work well.
what about a official BOW Chapter colour scheme for people to vote for?
I read this shortly after it was posted. I’ve been thinking about it since then.
I really like the four major ideas mentioned in the blog. (there have been some really good ideas put forth by members as well.)
1) Livestreams – A camera with host asking about projects in the works there in house and reviewing remote project coverage like Wednesday Hobby Hangouts.
2) A permanent running livestream from the hobby room.
3) Skype Calls – This one excited me the most. For anyone who has had a thought or two of being a small part of BoW/OTT. This could be cool if connections are solid enough for a good transmission back and forth.
4) Q&A Sessions – This would be cool for members that don’t want to speak on audio or video but want to ask or answer questions.
5) Dedicated Chat Rooms – This would give the remote members an interaction with each other when those in house are tied up with other activity. Also if an ‘Official OTTer’ was able to monitor the chat and get answers for the chatroom, it would be great.
So many options…….
I do like having (at least) a rough outline of events with projected times of happening.
I know I am changing my clock on Thursday afternoon to ‘Coilraine’ time so that I can be working on my project at the very same time as those in the CoG chapel! I may not be able to make it to Ireland but I’m trying my best to feel as much a part of this event as possible. The more ‘live casts’ the better! ??
A chatroom especially if it was kept separate from the main activity thread would be a good idea
I’ll be engaged with real-life commitments during most of the Weekender, so I’ll only be dipping in and out. a central thread linking to other participants Projects would be great.
Any Q&A technique type sessions recorded or transcribed for later would be appreciated too.
I have a couple of active 40k themed projects on the go right now, if @lancorz or the crew want to have a look through during the weekender, please feel free.
a live chat-show would be kind of cool.
Although I don’t want to get too distracted from getting any hobby done 😉
I probably will break my personal speed building record …
Painting anything might be a challenge, but we’ll see.
