I better get some sleep then so I can be sort of awake for this in 5 hours!
I’ll definitely be having popcorn and chocolate milk for this.
Where do we go to watch?

Thanks bro, i have been everywhere for this for the past 3 or so days. going to bed now, 5 hours Yey, also i would love to skype ahe, Message me if i am able to 🙂 Cheers
Mitch
It’s not happening at 7pm GMT though, because we’re not currently on GMT. It’s happening 7pm BST/IST (British/Irish Summer Time).
7pm GMT would actually mean it was starting at 8pm tonight. However, that link you posted with the time conversion is correct, so whatever it says for your city in that is the time it starts.
Sorry, that’s just my time OCD coming out :-/
Thanks… I’ve updated that. 🙂
so excited !
Well after watching it I musst say that it wasnt very fun to watch at all.
The technical side was really spot on. Kudos to the camrea angles and the switch in between those angles ( and thanks for using stands, one of the most annoying things in other peoples battlereports is that its constantly wobbling and out of focus)
BUT Darrel isnt much of a good player for such videos, he on his own totally took out all the fun. I was expecting a fun and casual game between two friends all I got was one guy taking advantage of EVERY little thing just to get a minimal benefit, it was like he was totally ignoring that this should just be a fun game for us to watch and was totally in his own world. Maybe thats just the way he has fun playing this game but no matter what, it simply isnt very entertaining at all.
Dont get me wrong, as I stated during the live show, I like that he presents loopholes and how take advantage of some situations (in his own miniseries), just so that I know what I might be facing and how I need to react to such things ….but that simply doesnt work in such formats as these live battlereports, its equally funny like paying 200GBP for a major boxing match and seeing one guy being knocked out after 30sec.
either change that attitude of yours Darrel or let someone else play in those battelreports.
my two cents.
Seb
@partisan I’ll admit that I realised early on that I didn’t have enough to deal with the Ultramarine Landraider… The only thing the Orks have to deal wit ARM:14 is Power Klaws and S:8 shooting (mostly Kannons & Killcannons… with a minor in Zzap Gun).
The only unit that can take multiple Power Klaws are Nobs. So, they’re now an auto-include in your Ork Army.
Of course your Deff Rolla is still good against a Land Raider… But you need to get there first.
It’s lamentable, but Hull Points hurt the Ork vs. vehicle dynamic a lot. Zzap Guns are now their best chance, but it’s still “roll for strength” before shooting, so they could easily be useless… And let’s not even get into the roll to hit!
The Orks have always had that same problem though. I like the inclusion of Hull Points, at least then I can kill Land Raiders. The week before 6th Edition I only managed to strip two weapons and immobilised it after three turns and seven glancing hits with my Nob Bikers.
Hull points could’ve helped you quite a bit in this game though. With the potential for 45 shots from a full strength squad of Lootas, you could’ve glanced the Land Raider it to death in a turn or two.
Just remembered–lootas are S7 aren’t they?
Unfortunately I agree. This is not a jab at Darrel because I really enjoy hearing his opinion when discussing rules/lists and think his video’s on those subjects are great. When it comes to a battle like this though I wanted to feel like both sides were having fun and it didn’t really feel like that for me.
I love Darrell, he needs to be in every episode of Live rounds !
Any way to see the battle afterwards? For prople who cant make it tonight?
The video should be logged on the twitch tv page to watch back. As far as I know anyway.
BoW Ben
Will be ready, as usual…
Little typo guys: ‘the lists have bee published’
And btw, who’s gonna manage the tweets since warrens not gonna be there?
I’m going to miss this as I am wargaming myself 😉
Well this be recorded aswell?
Either way good luck to both you ‘may the dice grace the most honourable’ – lol Yeah right just smash him!!! :-),
i live in england when is it???
According to my time zone, they were supposed to be playing right now. Where can I see the match?
Yeah I can’t find it either, will it be on the main page?
its not coming up on me laptop :,( any idear when and what time its on i live nere Hereford england
BOW live shows normally run a bit late, so hopefully it will be on shortly. Probably on the twitch tv link above.
Was good. GG
I really enjoyed the show keep up the good work guys
Great show for me.
The camera angles were spot on, that was a really nice table too, and with all hands on deck having someone free to give a bit of commentary would complete it.
40K is what it is, seeing darrell extract the cheese made me laugh, but I think this format would really suit something like infinity and its less structured playstyle.
Awesome show a future variety of games would be ace
Good show, hope we get to see more episodes of it =)
cc:
get rid of the “watch at twitch.tv/beastsofwar” overlay, it’s really useless once you think about it 😛 (esp if you decide not to keep an eye on the twitch chat at all)
I kept on wanting you to cut to a dice cam for the important rolls! A tray at each end with a camera on it probably would have done the trick!
Overall I thought the format shows great promise. For a first attempt it was excellent!
Fun to watch, good job guys.
Need to work on camera angles in my opinion guys, the main cam was too high and too far, the other angles were better closer up, it’s good to see dice rolls! I like to see the dice rolls!.
ps. Enjoyed it though, thanks.
Good show, but I’ll 2nd the dice cams
Great show guys!
I have only been able to watch the first half so far but I have really enjoyed it, especially Darrell.
Poor old Andy looked a bit down when his Orks were ‘demolished’ in front of the Land Raider but that is the type of action you learn from. I also think Darrell might have a new appreciation for the potential damage that a Vindicator can hand out.
So far quotes of the game for me:
Darrell: “I’m gonna help your guys get out of the vehicle for the next phase”.
Darrell: “The Public wants him to run. I want him to run!”
Very funny, good work guys!
Chaz
It isn’t very fun to watch one player (Darrell) just steamroll and ignore the other player (especially when that player is splitting his attention between the game and chat) when rules are in question. He just talks over any objection and contiues to play. This might be fine for a tournament (WAAC) but makes for poor entertainment. Darrell needs to play for an audience, where he makes sure both players take full advantage of the rules. I would much rather watch a balanced game played in good faith than a beatdown where one player might as well not be there.
Well done Guys, a great concept!
I have a couple of suggestions:
– Dice cam, most definitely. But rather than cutting away to it, a separate window popping up would be a nice touch.
– Some useful graphics along the top/bottom of the screen. So – game turn number, who’s turn it is and current score/tally. This would really help anyone just tuning in.
– Also, not sure how feasible this would be, but maybe some sound fx and tension building music clips to play over any important, climactic or funny parts of the game. I just think it would really add to the show making it more cinematic.
Just some ideas….
Anyway, a great first show.
Extremely good, especially for a first run – interesting to hear Lloyds stage directions as well 🙂
Negatives were terrain movement to allow the drop pod to land (it would have been a different game if Andy’s battlewagon hadn’t gone so early in the game) and driving tanks/bikes up sheer cliffs (the “this is a hill now” comment before driving a Vindicator up a 90 degree cliff, c’mon) – excellent scenary but play it as it lies guys otherwise you may as well be on a flat table OR have the opening scene include terrain definition (impassable, difficult etc) sometimes cheese hunting vears into cheating and that’s one thing that will destroy the fun in any game.
… forgot to say good work on the cameras to Justin as well 🙂
Also as a lapsed 2nd Ed player the table looked a little small ….the standard table size in 2nd was 8×4 foot and with the increasing use of vehicles/flyers 6×4 looks too small – now this could be because I haven’t played in a while added to the nostalgia effect – or even the aspect ratio of the video being a little out (the table didn’t look big enough to be 6×4 🙂
Only watched darrels first turn and i wonder which game he plays?!
– Andy would have been able to shoot with his vehicle. Darell looked up the chart and said he couldn’t but in fact he could have fired all his weapons with the snapfire rule.
– Since when can you fire on passengers who disembarked in your shooting phase? Shooting is supposed to happen simultaneously -> at the bginning of the shooting phase no one hase LOS to the passengers.
– The blasts from the Thunderfirecannon should have been placed like multi-barrage shots, so you get a cluster of blasts and not single ones (with which he hit the bikers)
Guys, get your rules right!
1. Yes Andy should have been able to snap shot but, if you forget or get it wrong you can only blame yourself.
2. You can do this. The only stipulation was that a squad fires simultaneously so you cant just fire say a melta, pop a transport then open up on the occupants with the remainder of the squad. There is nothing in the rules that says you must choose targets for all squads based on LoS at the start of the shooting phase (5th or 6th ed), you choose the target after nominating a unit to shoot and the only restrictions then are LoS and range at that step. It explicitly says you can choose the order for your units to shoot and once you complete the sequence with a unit you select another and repeat it. If you can see it at the time you can kill it.
3. Multilple blasts should not be placed like multi barrage at all . Blast rules say each shot is resolved “one at a time” as per the blast rules. Scatter each individually and determine hits, exactly as it was in 5th.
The moral of this story is don’t let Darrell check the rules for you…
yeah it seemed odd that repeated hits from the thunderfire on the same models generated more hits on the squad – I would have thought that hitting the same mini three times wouldn’t have caused armour saves (or casualties) on minis that weren’t under the blast template …
Blast templates are only used to determine the number of hits and wounds. Wound allocation follows the normal wound allocation rules for shooting attacks.
Possibly my last comment – MORE LIKE THIS – I watched the show with my 11 year old son (wannabe Ork player) and we were joined by my 14 year old daughter who now wants to play as well – well done BoW I may as well declare bankrupcy now lol 🙂
Hi guys… thanks for the comments.
We were thrown a bit of a curve ball halfway through the day, when we realised we would be one man short, but we coped.
This was really a dry run to find out what you guys would like and what we could achieve.
We’ve learned some stuff you can only find out from “going live”… so, thanks to those who gave feedback… and watch out for next time!
Can’t wait 🙂
For all the problems I liked it – do more!
This was really uneven game but if Andy had fun dispite that then I don’t really see it to be problem althought personaly I would had prefered to see thight game that could had went either way. Darrell had basically already won on turn 1 and Andy could had just given up but that would had made short batrep. I am expecting you guys to make video about rules that you guys got wrong like guys in MWG do after they batreps.
We were limited by the choices of troops we could take (we wanted to use painted stuff for you guys)… anyway… we have time to get some cool painted stuff together for the next one.
Keep sending us suggestions of want you want to see. 🙂
Wait, you guys are just as lazy as me and have all your cheesy stuff unpainted? No way.
I think going for an all painted army was the right move – looked much better on the table
First of all well done all round guys. Poor Andy, you looked defeated after turn one, demand a rematch where your attention isnt split or better again bring a better army . Darrell…well done and verry entertaining. Your massive head serves a purpose it seems, your knowledge helped the game move swiftly along. You need a challenge however. Next time develope a more competitve atmospher where rules can be contested, ones where cliffs turn into hills first turn !
If the show is to gain a following then you lads are gonna have to have more closely fought games, I was one of those shouting for Andy to throw it in after turn three by the way.
Looking forward to the next one guys but find someone to flatten Darrell in the mean time.
Cheers and keep it up lads, enjoying 40k week, I might even pick up the starter box in September. Does anyone wanna buy an ass load of LOTR SBG stuff bdw?
Skype commentating? I wouldn’t mind doing that if your still looking guys. got the big rule book right next to my desk at all times
I saw a bit of this last night. Cracking stuff. I definitely think you BoW lads using this format could broadcast live tournament battles with commentary (think snooker on the BBC perhaps?). I guess finals, maybe semi-finals, of large tournaments would be most suited to this attention. Also maybe have scores, mission objectives and time limit displayed on the screen? Just an idea. Good stuff, cheers BoW team!
Well done guys….enjoyed the game. 🙂
A few dodgy terrain interpretations on the Ultramarine side apart !!
( I dont play 40K…but the rules for drop pods look flawed, bigtime !)
I’m looking forward to the next one. I’m sure you will have learnt a lot from doing this one.
I think an umpire would have helped keep Darrell in check but still a bit of controversy over the rules helps you to remember them.
How you play a game with couple of hundred armchair generals commenting on your every move, hats off to the pair of you
I want to see a rematch this time SWAP LISTS.
To be honest guys the only defence against a player like darrel is to know all the rules yourself aswell. You don’t need an umpire or a ref just knowledge. Always works for me 🙂
Enjoyed the Live Rounds. Thanks Guys.
Very nice for a first attempt, shows great promise. I enjoyed it, but I think the debates could have been discussed more with people watching (effectively allowing a bit of (as long as its justified) arbitration. Other than that it was a good watch!
I noticed a couple of mistakes you guys made, just writing them down so you guys can learn from them, but I know it is a new rulebook and everything. (I have also added pages numbers to make it easier).
1) If charged you can snap fire from a transport (p80).
2) Crusing Vehicles can fire snap shots with all weapons. (P71).
3) Models inside a transport take a str 4 hit when it explodes (P80).
4) Not sure about this, but you mentioned at the begginning that those hills were scaleable (e.g. you take away your movement climbing), I can’t quite find this in the rulebook, but it does that only certain types of models can scale ‘ruins’ (P98), and I would assume the same applies in this circumstance.
5) Bit cheesy, but I am trying to help you Andy as much as possible. When the drop pod came down, I believe it scattered off the table from this angle, if not I think it would have done when the doors opened, as they still count as part of a vehicle and a drop pod can only move for impassable terrain?? Bye bye drop pod.
6) WIth the thunderfire cannon there are two things. Firstly how can it kill 9 lootas when only 6 (I think) were killed the previous turn, and secondly LOS is required from both models in the squad and Darell seemed to only be measuring from the taller and further forward canon. (p46)
I would like to say for a first go it was pretty good and if only for the fun of picking holes in the rules you used it was a very enjoyable game. Well done for a first try!!!
3) Models inside an Open-topped transport take S3 hits to account for the ease of exit. (I don’t have a page for this, just chiming in)
5) Drop pod doors don’t count as part of the “hull” in my experience, and it has safe deep strike so its scatter falls short of any mishaps AFAIK.
Edit on 4) I meant when only 4 could shoot the previous turn
Great report, orks don’t mind dying provided they kill the warlord. We could of done with a close up of Darrell’s reaction!
For the camera work turn off the auto focus then zoom in to something in the distance and sharp focus. Then you can zoom in and out and everything will stay sharp.
I enjoyed watching, some good feedback re some of the bad points.
So when is the next one?
also please do other systems besides 40k…eg Infinity, Flames of War, warmahordes etc
Enjoyed that. Not far off a great gaming event! I love the idea of a dice cam with a fixed camera.
I thought Darrell did a good job of keeping the pace for the battle going but you really need a formalised umpire/rule checking system. Tricky when you want things to keep moving. However, rather a fair game than one player seemingly bending rules to fit his battle plan. I was half expecting Darrell to claim a jink save for his amazing flying tank!
Andy did disagree on several occasions but D did what he wanted anyway. I’d use these instances to pause the game, ask the community (umpire looks up the rules in the meantime) shouldn,t hold things up much.
You could also do with a formal phase counter. When the player moves this on they can’t go back. Could be a graphic on screen.
Nice idea on the phase counter …
Seconded
I was really looking forward to catching this game all week, but sadly I had to give up watching after the first 30 minutes.
The format was great, the camera angles were spot on, but I just could not stand Darrell’s WAAC unsportsmanlike attitude.
As others have suggested, perhaps get an impartial umpire in there, or have someone else play – who actually understands that a live game is not all about himself and steamrolling your opponant’s objections.
I’m still looking forward to the next installment as I’m sure a lot of bugs will be ironed out.
Happy gaming, all.
When did Darrell turn into a win at all costs fellow? I thought he was sporting throughout. It might look that wya because he won, but he did so because he chose the right targets and used his army to best advantage.
It would have been nice to have Andy in at the end talking about what he’d change as much as the other folks, but I don’t think Darrell came over as an evil power gamer. If anything, it exposed how much of the actual tactics exist only in the army list you choose. There’s too much dice rolling for true strategy.
Appreciate i’m coming to this a bit late – just a note: roomin’ great. A wonderful video, great direction, great to see our games being played.
For me the best bit was the ‘aftermath’ chat talking about which units were better than others, what you’d swap out and so on.
It’s also good to know that other people play like my chums and I do! More please!
Oh, and how did you set about creating that board? It’s gorgeous!
all in all a good job guys! Especially the camera work. however there are a number of ways i think you couldve improved it imho.
1. Make it shorter, 3 hours is a hell of a long time to spend watching a video and by the end it began to get a little boring. So perhaps if you just did a turn by turn breakdown of what happened then that might be more enjoyable?
2. make Darrel a nicer person 😛
good effort though guys, keep it up!
I think D was sporting when the outcome wouldn’t have a major effect on his plans.
Reading the rules shouldn’t he have rolled on the deep strike mishap chart? A delay of a trun or two and/or landing in the wrong place may have changed the outcome of the battle. The main ork offensive would have got in amongst it.
The vindicator should not scale cliffs, it did a lot of damage it shouldn’t have.
These showcases are examples to the rest of us how to play and what the correct interpretations/consensus of the rules are. How can we get to grips with a new set of rules if the vids have it wrong. BOW need to get this right. Perhaps more QC/Editing is needed. How about a poll on the infamous spidertank……spidertank and/or terrain moving/doser bladed drop pod?
D brings a lot to BOW but he
A great idea guys. Andy really needed to give his Warboss the Power Klaw and Personal Traits. If possible the Warboss should also be mounted on a bike as this means he can no longer be Instant deathed by double strength weapons.
Excellent show guys I really liked it. More please!
just got a bit carried away.
Now, that the lists had to be improvised this much was a pitty of course, something more suited to the players´playstyles and wishes, and less limited by the studio collection might have made for a more interesting game. It was still fun, just a bit random. In that context, maybe sticking to a Captain instead of using the model as proxy for Cassius might have been more appropriate, but it wouldn´t have made much of a difference the way the game went.
Negative points were definitely how certain rules questions were handled: Of course we viewers wanted to be entertained, but this was also meant to showcase the 6th edition. While the shot through the hole in the hill was unexpected, but actually pretty cool, the rest of how the terrain (and some other things) was treated was laughable at times. The Droppod landing on the stone arc because it had not been declared impassable terrain? A piece of terrain that was obviously unable to support a model? Seriously? Also, the Vindicator swiveling through the stone needle in the middle was “quesionable” as well, after all it was part of the terrain on the table and shouldn´t just have been ignored… but I guess when you make it a point to ignore everything that could hinder you, and insit in every little bit that would give you the smallest advantage, AND just flat out ignore any argument against what you are saying/doing in contentious situations, that´s just part of the gameplan. Good thing this is just one way to play this game, and not necessarily the best one.
So overall, nice to watch, but it could have been much better. At least one person had fun, whatever he may have gotten out of this playstyle…
The use of the template by the thunderfire cannon was done wrong. Page 33 of the BRB states that template weapons may hit models that are “out of range and out of line of sight” so therefore, more orks would have died due to the template blasts.
Correct. I’m not sure Darrell had line of sight, though. He should have rotated the TFC so the barrel was pointing towards the unit directly, then placed the laser in front of the barrel to check LOS. Instead, he checked from the tip of the barrel, which was turned to the right quite a bit. That may have given him an inch or two more angle of visibility.
A couple of niggly points here in addition to the one I made on aiming the TFC.
– you guys were sloppy with taking units wounded from the front (i.e. closest to the firing) in both shooting and CC. In at least one case (Sternguard) Darrell took a model from the back. Remember you’re trying to demo NEW rules.
– the rulebook says the challenge is fought and resolved AFTER all initiative level combats (see Pg. 429 half way down the right column). You fought the challenge first. That can affect pile-in-by-initiative moves and wound spill-over from the challenge onto the squad.
– To use Sternguard the way Darrell played them, you want 5 comb-melta and 5 combi-flamer. Combat squad on exit the pod, destroy the transport, then fry the occupants. Works great if the pod hits where needed. Even better in lists with Vulkan.
You can’t Combat Squad on exit. Have to declare that during deployment.
Yes you can. Drop pods are the specific exception. Its under “Combat Squads” on page 51 of the SM Codex.
Impassable terrain scrub?
The Orks in the Battle Wagon should have been able to snap fire when Cassius’ squad Assaulted. Troops in an open top vehicle can snap fire if the vehicle is assaulted.
Darrell needs to stop being so cheeky. Several times I thought “it doesn’t matter what the rulebook says, something stupid is something stupid, and shouldn’t be done”. That being said, I appreciate Darrell’s clear effort to get things done as fast as possible, clearly aware of the time frame and the live nature.
Good going on the first time! Well done all.
I do think the whole thing should be more viewer directed, i.e we should be able to loosely vote on what the players do, otherwise this is an entirely pointless affair and could easily be edited and cut into a decent battle report which doesn’t take 3 hours to watch.
But Bravo overall!
models inside an exploding vehicle take a strength 4 AP- hit, not a strength 3 AP- hit 😀 hope this helps
Just caught this, was away for the live broadcast, I found it largely enjoyable and definately think there is the basis for an excellent regular feature. So my feedback
1) Keep the intro bit, good to see lists covered and discussed.
2) Consider having a ref/MC, they could allow the players to focus a bit more on the game and resolve/check rules questions. Might also allow you to do some narrative missions etc which would make it much more of an event. Could also handle chat, field comments etc.
3) Stick with painted models, even if this limits army selection really helps with the quality of the production. Nice board btw.
4) Don’t concern yourself too much with the supposed min/max lists unless your doing a tournament play match, varied lists are more interesting. in which case get experience and recognised tournament players in and get each to do a filmed section discussing their list away from the other person explaining ideas and links to the meta. Let the cheese flow then.
5) Not sure dice roll are necessary to be seen but if thats some to add woud it be technically possible to set up a dice tray under the close cam.
6) I know pace needs to be considered but would it be possible to see a 5 min interlude between each turn and each player given access to their own chat channel, were people could give tactical advice/suggestions. Would mean people had to pick a side etc, and more work for you guys but could be positive.
7) Keep the wrap up section, really good way of closing out the game would of been nice to see both players discussing it, but if Andy is a farmer I am sure he has to be up early so understandable.
8) Experiment, play and try if for more systems once you have the basics down.
9) Would you consider viewer written missions – you pick a board, the viewers sendin some missions etc
10) keep it up 🙂
Any update from the BoW team on when we will see the next installment of Live Rounds? Really enjoyed this first trial run and would love to see more. Next time let the players bring their own armies and hopefully this will make for a more balanced game…shame about the poor Orks…
