Unboxing: Black Seas – Master & Commander Starter Set
September 25, 2019 by avernos
Warren and Gerry get their tricornes on to talk about the Master & Commander Starter Set for Black Seas.
Black Seas Is Available From Our Store
Warlord Games have packed a huge amount of detail into both the miniatures and core rulebook and this starter set is looking like a great investment for anyone interested in this era of the age of sail.
Including both British and French forces, the guys break down all of the components and show you just how deep you can go with making these ships including a rigging tutorial that's certainly not for the faint of hobbying hearts.
Will you be picking up Black Seas?

Yes lads, was looking forward to this one
I’ma rig those ships @warzan
Got a copy of Wargames Illustrated today with the free ship. Nice looking ships. I am a little tempted now!
Join me Robert. Channel your Inner Jack Aubrey. I’m planning on going French anyway, the french never get any love at sea
“the french never get any love at sea” – There are so many things I want to say right now, but I’ll keep it clean and suggest less garlic would help with that!
I did looks a nice model….but already got a pile of Sails of Glory ships so
The Unicorn is the national animal of Scotland, believe it or not, which is why it is on the Royal Coat of Arms… the Lion represents the English.
If you look closely you’ll find a bottle of Bucky to represent Northern Ireland
Thought it was Thunderbird, Bucky is more of a Scotia thing
I know this, I love how when picking a national animal the Scots chose a mythical one, ranks up their with the Welsh and their dragon I can’t help but feel like they were taking the piss
Might be taking the piss or the side effect of love making with Ovis aries!
Should have gone for a Wild Haggis, what do you mean they dont exist I’ve seen the comic!
Well we had the choice between a Unicorn or a Haggis but we felt the more mythical animal was more inline with our nations epicness. 🙂
Looking forward to my prize arriving
Rigging? I have attempted this madness before. Never again
Fabric stiffner might work for the rigging
If you do the rigging post-paint, pre-varnish, I would think the varnish would stiffen it -at least in the quantities I plaster it on.
This is worth taking a look at. I do hope the boys do series on putting these ladies together and how they work on the rigging.
looks real nice set , but have to give a miss it will be another game that will go on the shelf 🙁
No gamer can do very wrong if he places his ship alongside that of the enemy.
Looks nice. Any chance of doing a vid of a game?
we already had it planned for friday
@avernos you playing with ships?
who are you and what have you done with Gerry!
I have not gotten back into Naval wargaming, (one of the fun things we did back in the day) until now or maybe not now but when this box of plastic smack hits the store shelves. As a fan of all things Hornblower and Commander, that is the book series right 😉 , and with my FLGS deciding that they will be going with this game I am now hooked. The lady of the house says I have an issue, I just bought her some jewelry so I am cleared for a new game system. 🙂
Another point, it was great to see @warzan and @avernos doing a video on this. The idea of not rigging your ships seems a poor idea as the rigging lines will help keep the plastic secure. Just like on a real ship.
So ready to paint these little ladies up properly.
Can it be that you people (OTT) haven’t told us who won the August gift card? Can’t find any video on it. 😉 @warzan
I will check with the team mate 🙂
I know the plan is to move that particular type of prize to become a Cog Exclusive thing 🙂
Just wondering because it’s still in the intro of the video 😉
Not playing with you if it hasn’t got rigging.
I think rigging the ships is not enough of a challenge for the BoW team…
You should make them ships in a bottle 🙂
I had a kit when I was a child… it was a total f***ing pain… but you have professional modellers in need of a challenge.
Can’t wait to see some proper fleet action reports.
It looks good but reminds me of ‘Oak and Iron’ and I’ve already backed ‘Oak and Iron’ at a high level. Warlords was just too late out of the gate.
BTW…. Oak and Iron is 1/600 scale so the ships will be a little larger and thus easier to rig, (at least one would think so).
YMMV
I backed that too, because who can resist raiding the Spanish Silver fleet ? 😉
I think they didn’t design them for rigging like these ones have.
OTOH … there’s the Blood&Plunder scale ships which do have the option for that (if you really want insane level of detail).
the unboxing makes me want to go out and get myself a box now and do some rigging, nice to see warren on an unboxing
bow sprite is the forward pointing mast guys.
games sounds great and the game mat looks fab.
Rigging on a 1:700 scale model seems nuts i must agree, but something inside my head wants to a go LoL.
I need to find some way of killing the urge for this game… I feel a Pugwash marathon coming on ☠️⛵️☠️
This is actually very tempting, and takes so little space. Hmmm…
This looks really fun and very nice. I will have to see if the wallet and time allow for it.
It would be nice if the box came with four 3rd rates so you could split them evenly. But I guess the faction specific rules should balance things out.
This looks the best naval battle game I’ve seen. It’s not been a type of wargaming I’ve previously considered, but I love the Napoleonic period, and this variation of naval warfare looks to be worth more consideration. I look forward to seeing the bigger ships as well. Nicely done Warlord.
@warzan and @avernos check this out for your gaming tables.

I’m already subbed to the guys I thought the same thing when I saw them. Probably not for the demo game but for a larger game it could be a winner.
Dude, this game is looking soooo good! I just love ships and those minis are crisp, I would be the crazy guy who paints and rigs the ship. Can’t wait to try it!
As much as I love naval games I am holding off on this because I got burnt with Cruel Seas.
The models look lovely, and of course you need to rig then ? the element you don’t need is the ships boats, because when they went into battle the were generally towed behind the ship.
Warlord have been knocking it out of the park recently only the flames of war starter set hit the beach rivals what they are doing.
Would love to get into this but with the Joan of Arc 1.5 KS next week I’ll have to pass for now. But I might invest in the rule book though, as it should be possible to do a quick Fantasy variant so that my Uncharted Seas fleets could see the light of day once more!
I am pretty sure I will be playing this game.
I am in two minds about this as it looks interesting but
Seems like a neat kit. I keep hoping for some sort of fantasy naval battles to come back into popularity but the last thing I can even think of on the topic is Dreadfleet and I think that lasted all of a week.
A box fart while we look at the box art!
Try the rigging for the first time on camera. I want to see someone loose their temper with it. Maybe get the whole team together and race to see who gets a ship done first and who breaks their ship or strops off first.
Looks interesting, not a big fan of naval war gaming but this does look good. I may be tempted.
It looks like a fun game. It reminds me that I should dig out Man O’War and finish painting those ships.
Great video and the only thing that left me a bit confused now that I have the box set myself is the ship cards. There were some for merchantman. There has been no information on models that go with the cards. I am wondering if @avernos has any info?
