Dropzone Commander Two Player Plastic Starter Set Unboxed!!!

That's right everyone, our friends over at Hawk Wargames have bought out their very own Two Player Starter Set and Dave, the creator of the game, has been good enough to drop in to the studio with Warren to have a look at this extremely cool box of gaming goodness! Best of all we have a little give away just to sweeten things. Bah, there's no point in being coy about it, the prize for this video is a signed copy of one of the first Two Player Starter Sets!
The only question left is, when can we all get out mits on the box?
Well Dave has told us it will be in all good hobby stores for the 28th of September so go pester your FLGS to order it in, and if your lucky enough to be at Gen Con you may want to head over to the Hawk Wargames stand as a little birdie has told me they may have brought a couple of copies along for people to have a look at.

I must say it appears to be the best value for money on the market atm for a starter set imho. Agree with Ben though about no PHR, but I guess if they included all the best minis, what further sales would they make. I like the human faction next after PHR though so it is still very tempting when a lot of folk say it is a really nice game. 🙂 Looks like it has really nice components to it too. the keyring tape is a nice little boon as well as nice dice (always hate over flamboyant dice as I can never read them which slows the game down I.E. Warmachine faction dice).
10/10 for how to increase your customer base with one addition product to your range! 😀 Surely every game should have a starter set in this day and age?????

Had a go at this game at Q-Con- simple mechanics, made sense and produced a realistic result – as far as Sci fi combat can do.

Heh like several others I would have preferred to see PHR as one of the factions (after all, curves are sexy!). That said, for a two player battle box trying to draw new people into the game, pitting humans against ‘alien’ aliens makes a lot of sense.

Wow! As an historical gamer (well, apart from ‘Lord of the Rings’) this might just get me tempted to cross into sci-fi.
At last a proper sci-fi wargame! Almost everything else on the market looks like a ‘Necromunda’ rip-off – different setting but bascially a skirmish involving different gangs.

Finally some plastic Dropzone Commander. This is what I’ve been waiting for! Although, I’ll admit, UCM and Scourge are the two of my least favourite factions, does this mean there’s a future for a two player plastic PHR and Shaltari box? I’d buy one of those for myself. The only way that i will be even better for me will be if it had the PHR instead of the UCM, but i’m totally in love with it. Best Two Starter Set Ever! All twostarter sets should have printed 3d terrain and the price on Wayland Games now is dead cheap!

I never got into the game because it was so expensive, but WOW £60 for 2 armies + rulebook and terrain. Going to buy 2-3 sets at minimum, I just hope they make all models in plastic that would be so sweet.

It is a benefit of the setting that they can use paper cubes as terrain, but still they went the extra mile to include it and I applaud Hawk Wargames for that. Terrain is typically a big barrier of entry to a new game in a different scale and Hawk demolished it.
It kills me that the only faction of the four I dislike, the scourge, are in the set though. Either of the other two factions in their place and I’d consider pre-ordering.
How much stuff you can put into one box? Thats really must be on of the biggest startes set on the market.

My adventures in sci-fi gaming started a long, long time ago with Space Marine and Titan Legions (6mm scale). They too had many minis (but not of this quality) and buildings (ditto). I have admired Dropzone Commander since it was first revealed on this site. The resins are beautiful. As a start pack, this is stunning. Now do a PHR vs Shaltari version and the world will fall to their knees! 10/10 to Hawk for such a superb comprehensive package.

It is a high light as a starterkit!
How many times there is an interesting good game system but you have a problem to show it your friends and convince them. The biggest problem is if the scale is a other than the normal played systems and so i like the terrain in the box.
The other thing what is greate is the rulebook. Often you get a minimized rulebook what is black and white and has a scale what make it hard to read. Oh it is good if you know the system and must confirm something, but if it a new game system the most people who I know whait that some one else read it.

If there’s one wargame I’ve been going back and forth over about getting into, it’s Dropzone Commander. As the range is now, it’s just too expensive for me. This new boxed set makes it more tempting, as the price seems more accessible.

Dropzone is an awesome game. I magnetised my entire UCM mega force so it all can fit into its drop ships. It’s so cool seeing your tanks fly in on a drop ship and then disembark.
This certainly ups the ante for starter kits. While FoWs kit does come with terrain pieces, the 3D buildings and ground maps really is the top of the cake for this kit. Well done.

Awesome news, always been a big fan of epic. Now I have an excuse to play more epic with the scenery in the box but I can now start playing a game I’ve had my eye’s on for a while.
I knew Hawk games were really trying to put out the best game they could.
But they have surpassed my expectations by a country mile with this starter set.
A must have IMO.

I really like the inclusion of the buildings and the game mat/ poster. A lot of starter sets offer cool figures and mini rule books but then you have to go find something to play on other than a plain kitchen table. Will have to look into getting a set when it is released. GW take note if you plan to re-release EPIC, this is the way to do it!

Hmm I always thought they had some bug like aliens. They would fit this game perfectly. Until now the resin pieces were to expensive for me. And they are resin, which I don’t like. Now with plastic it gets interesting.

YOU Mr. Warren need to do a Drop Zone Commander week and get us all excited about this system the same way you have done with Flames of War and believe me I think the viewers will be enjoying this system and telling there grand kids about it in “I was there man, I was there”

I must admit though I thought that the Open fire set couldn’t be beat on quality and value for money but I must agree that Dropzone Commander is the new kid on the block. So to any company wishing to produce a starter set in the future then I think for your product to do well you should look at these two sets.
I have been taken with Dropzone Commander ever since Beasts of War done varius spreads and videos on it, so after seeing it at Salute this year I was really interested in it. I do hope that Beasts of War look at doing a intro to the game as I think it will attract a lot of interest.
For all my moaning about no PHR, that APC is the coolest vehicle in this game. It’s exactly what I think future military hardware should look like.
I have been sitting on the sidelines for this game for a while now. Maybe its time to look at joining up?

So awesome there’s a Starter Box. I love these all in one game boxes that a person can purchase and play games right away. It’s just a bonus that these are coming out in plastic now as well.
The UCM look really good – I like the fact they are potrayed as the underdog looking to kick some! I was looking with interest at the resin kits in May at Carronade 2013; may be an Xmas pressie if I’m not lucky to win 🙂

While I’m not a fan of the scourge’s look, I have to say, this box is amazing. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything even remotely come close, considering terrain and such is in there. Though one could argue the old 4th ed 40k box came with the downed plane, a full city plus play mat is stiff competition.

What a superb package. The biggest obstacle stopping me getting into FoW was having to start collecting/building 15mm terrain as well as an army. 2 of these boxes would give me 2 (I assume decent sized) armies plus a pretty nice board to play on from the get go. Sold. 🙂

A really cool take on modern/sci-fi wargaming – air mobile forces. Awesome looking models, and another entry into my ‘I wish I could play’ list, this time in the smaller scale section, alongside games such as Flames of War, Heavy Gear, Battletech, Dystopian Wars, Robotech RPG Tactics…
(Okay, some of those have quite large models, but technically their scale is similar)
Not to mention the phenomenal looking models!
Been trying not to get sucked into DZC, but looks like this might just get bought at the Derby show which coincides with its release date!
This looks really good, well boxed and produced, with FOW meeting Fallen skies at a reasonable scale, small table top space required, with reasonably priced expansion sets, all I need now is more overtime, Can we have some “Avenger” types figures to wargames the last film with the avengers meeting Loki’s hords, as these figures/miniatures meet the ticket… Well done..
I have just been informed of the 10 year old Grandson arriving within the next week and he’s with me for 3 weeks, This set is perfect, for him (I mean US, to get on the same page), brill, great, FOW meets transformers… YES…
I wasn’t a 10/15 mm player/liker, until now …

The set looks great. I have a UCM force (small) but the plastics look like they’ll fit together much easier than the resin did. If I don’t win a copy I’ll have to look at maybe buying this for some extra forces.

However the starter contains the two factions that the background of the game is all about.

Have to say this looks like one of the best starter sets I’ve seen in terms of having everything a newbie would need to play. Particularly important for getting people involved in 10mm I think given that few of the other most popular rulesets are at this scale.

I’ve spent hours building every downloadable building and glued every possible detail on it (balconies and air condition units) especially the white building was a real challange because of it many balconies. I even build additionally buildings by combining more than one set. Now I have got a whole city standing in a cupboard that had not seen any action because the biggest army sets had been the one with the best price value. Now I can give it a try- finally.
By the way the downloadable buildings were fun to build.

This looks fantastic! I’ve been interested in DzC since I saw pics on it a few months back here at BoW, been checking it out watching youtube etc. I was at hawk wargames site the other day looking for a starter set and really disappointed when I couldnt find one (not an army starter set but a 2 player one to try it out and show it around at my club).
I have to say Dave has gone above and beyond with this starter set though. I was only looking for 2 armies and the rules and then he provides a whole game in a box. Nice one. I’ll be picking this up for sure around Xmas time! Hope you ship to Australia 🙂
Starter boxes are something that more small wargames companies should do, anything that lowers the barrier to starting a new games, makes it that much easier to get people into your game. I think ti would be good if they did a second starter box containing the other two factions, since then it would be easier for groups of people to get into the game by buying multiple starter sets.
Dropzone Commander looks fun, give me a free copy. 😉

I must admit that drop zone commander is the only miniatures game that I like the look of all armies and models.I wish I could buy those models in my local game store.
I saw DZC at Salute 2012 and have been on the verge of jumping in ever since – this might have done it! I would certainly welcome a PHR vs Shaltari version, those have always been the best factions for me!

Looks really good. But did I see a sink (a moulding fault where the plastic sucks in on itself, usually on thick cross sections) on one of the UCM tanks (underneath). Still I wouldn’t say no to a free box set 🙂

Outstanding starter box set well thought out in design, they have kept it simple and easy to use, a good example of that is the buildings. The balance is there between the opposing forces, it is ready to entice you into the game.
Starter box sets like this and Open Fire are first class, great way to get people into their games.
It’s a great looking set. I’m really trying to budget my gaming purchases lately. I think I’m glad that no one in my area is really into this yet, not because it isn’t awesome, but just because my wallet is already crying for mercy.

The attention to the detail on the models and the rest of the game components is awesome. I really like the look of this game and I think the Shaltari would be my race of choice. The humans are a very close second though. Keep up the amazing work Hawk War Games.

I don´t think I have seen this nice 2 player starter since epic space marine.
last 2 versions of the GW boxes haven even been properly playable. I think flames of war one comes close to this thought. but terrain and gaming included? I´m impressed.

PHR may have been harder to transition into plastic.
The forces in the boxed set are pretty iconic to DZC, but there were probably also a lot of considerations about how well model ranges would transition to plastic!

This is one awesome starter kit. Seems like a good choice for armies given the background info. I love plastic miniatures over resin and metal. I was actually thinking of getting the card stock fold out buildings and the rulebook but this seems to have everything I would want. Looking forward to seeing this starter set!

DzC is one of those games that I’d love to play but the cost had kept me out of it as it just wasn’t viabbe alongside my Warmachine and whatever else is in the lead mountain.
However this changes everything. Looking forward to the release of this, just in time for my birthday 😉

I really like the look of this game and have been tempted to give it a try for a while. Unfortunately my favourite factions are the Shaltari and the PHR – so unless they come up with an alternative starter set I think this one might have to stay on the ‘one to watch’ list for now. That’s always the problem with starter boxes, they may contain one faction one likes or none at all.
I understand why they went with scourge and UCM, but for me personally none of the factions does it.

I love the child-like giddiness that permeates from this video. This is a really great looking game. I love how well-designed it is feature wise. They give you everything you could need to play the game. Simply wonderful.

Just to say that I have received my starter set this morning and WOW! Its the best looking starter set I have ever brought in the last 20 years.
Amazing, as well as the amount of content, the quality of the printing and models, the full colour rule book with paint schemes and background fluff, all the sprues were packed in their individual bags and then bubble wrapped.
Well worth more than the price I paid….they got me hooked, they can have all my money 🙂 Now what to order next?
Many larger companies could do with looking at what these guys have done and learn some lessons, simply fantastic.

I love this game. The miniatures are awesome.
It has been a while since this unboxing but today I finally got my two player starter set. I have been sitting on the fence about dropzone commander since I originally saw this video, now the boot camp live blogs and the Edens path story have pushed me over the edge.
I have bought a good number of two player starters open fire, dark vengeance, operation icestorm, Normandy fire fight and as far as first impression go the dropzone commander box is one of if not the best. The box itself has a good weight to it and is pretty solid. Once open the first thing that struck me on lifting the bubble wrap was how crisp and clear the bases for the infantry were. This quality is maintained throughout the sprues, Although I have not had a chance to assemble them yet the quality of casting on the sprues gets a big thumbs up. The rulebook is quality and has lots of nice pictures.
overall a very good set and I am excited about building the armies and getting my first game in.
