Infinity 3rd Edition Sneak Peek: More Rules Revealed!
August 1, 2014 by crew
So we've talked about Camouflage and Weapon Ranges, but there's even more to come from Infinity 3rd Edition. See if you can guess what rules are going to be tweaked in the forthcoming book...
Will movement be changed? Maybe the way shooting works? Or could close-combat be getting a major upgrade?
Watch and find out!

Can’t wait. Can’t wait. Can’t wait !
I can’t wait either, I want to get playing this now. I have a whole FLGS that needs converting
I don’t want to wait I want it now…..
Nice table, good to see what can be done with your new cadboard terrain.
Infinity FTW!
NEED!! ^^
I HOPE that if anyone gains anything from this, it is what Carlos says early on;
paraphrasing here:
Don’t make any assumptions about 3rd edition from the QSR, wait for the full version to read the complete rule!
Keep up the good work.
I’m excited for the new Edition! Cant wait to see how the rules shake out!
The table looks really good.
The comment I refer to is at 4:38.
Love it 🙂
Lieutenant rules sound sensible
>>>[Killian] so the Lieutenant rules now sound sensible]
So the Camo/Visor rules are more consistent than before with other rules
>>>[Killian] so whereas in Infinity 2 the camo and visor rules were inconsistent with others in N3 they will be]
Combat jumps use a new template and always scatter 16″ rather than a calculation
>>>[Killian] so the template is different to Infinity 2 and the scatter is different – instead of calculating the distance it’s alwats 16″]
For aggressive infiltration…
>>>[Killian] infiltration that is aggressive]
…rather than roll a number dependant on the distance in your opponents half…
>>>[Killian] in Infinity 2 you had to roll a different number depending… ]
Killian!
>>>[Killian] That’s Killian]
Killian shut up!!
>>>[Killian] That means be quiet]
$%#@ !
>>>[Killian] That’s a Spanish swearword]
<>
>>>[Killian] I failed my armour save so am now unconscio…]
Why is it not out yet….. Aaaaaahhhhhhhh
I am really digging the change to Loss of Lieutenant. It’s not the game-ender it was in 2nd Edition, but it can still throw a big monkey-wrench into your battle plan, especially if you were depending on the momentum of a pricey model or two that now only get a single order in the Loss-of_Lt. turn.
CB: I really hope you have a huge pile of product en route to Indianapolis.
These rules sound like they are well thought out and really well planned – I’m very interested to put them to work.
I thought it was quite cute when Carlos told the fans not to approach 3rd ed rules from a 2nd ed understanding… that’s like telling the bear not to eat the honey while you turn away – it’s either going to do it anyways or bite you in the ass for teasing it with the honey.
The exceptions and complexity of rules is what stopped me from getting into infinity years ago, now im jumping in with icestorm and LOVING the simplification and rule balancing that is happening for 3rd edition
Im so sold on this game, cant wait to be able to start playing
The change to Loss of Lieutenant is a fantastic change. It’s still a negative, but not nearly as insurmountable as it was before hand, and actually makes the Lieutenant usable in a risk vs. reward scenario.
I must admit the MSV 3 thing does not make me happy. I hope that rule change will come with a price reduction. I do however understand why it was necessary…makes perfect sense
The new lol rule is much better than the old one I think!
liking what Im hearing here so far
Interesting:- adjective. definition – Oh God! Oh God! We’re all going to die!
The guys i play with wanted to use these 3rd ed rules, but i told them to wait, so manychanges. All for the good of the game. Can’t wait fo play with the full rules.
I’m liking the rules.
I also like the change to infiltration, a lot less arithmetic and a more cleanly stated rules. I’m okay with the new scatter template and how you determine it, but 16 inches seems like a huge number to me. I’m not ready to decry it till I test it though.
Excellent stuff! Infiltration is nice and easy to deal with now…and yeah, the risk there is definitely a great way to go. Question: With the Lt. Order; in the previous video you mentioned a Non-Order Order, in which it was kind of like a Stutter Order to get the opponent to respond. Is there a way to use your Lt Order in this way to trick an opponent into believing the wrong troop is the Lt? You use it, but don’t move/activate a few troops that turn, and now the opponent is wondering which is your Lt.
@bostria what about Religious troops?
I can’t wait for the full rulebook.
New player here (only two 2nd edition games), really like the sound of the changes.
Would have expected an PH modifier for the combat jump scatter though!
A few good changes, I’m all for straightened (not necessarily simplified) rules. Very keen on how it all fits together in 3rd edition.
Woa! Changes! Changes everywhere! great infinity week!
OK, I’m ready for the book now, please.
I want them to change the rules of the calendar so September follows July.
Judging as a new player, these sound like excellent changes all around. Let people have fun with their lieutenants, apply sensible logic to the visors, reduce randomness in jumps, make infiltration more risk vs. reward. In other words stop making players fight the rules or suffer under arbitrary and confusing mathematics. Clarity, depth and choice are the pillars of any great game. (RandomChangeRange, you can go sit in the corner and think about what you’ve done.)
I know Infinity already has plenty of attention, but I think this 3rd edition is going to be a big deal.
Cool stuff. Cant wait.
Love it. Now what would the rule on grenade scatter be 8″? If we could have that info. We may have an intro set of 3rd edition.
Said it once and i believe i´ll keep on telling it….Balance and Playability 😀
Every video makes me want to get into infinity a little bit more. Resistance is nearly gone now.
They all sound good, at the same time I worry for folks that can’t work out what 2×4 is. Seems many of the changes are about avoiding things like being able to count.
Interesting changes
I really like all those changes. Only one problem. Bloody Hollywood.
Killian, we’re British it’s pronounced Left-tennant.
Carlos, you’re Spanish so you can pronounce it however you want.
No complaints with any of the changes. Good stuff.
OMFG !!!!!
The 3rd Ed looks great … The changes are awesome 🙂
Can’t wait …
Good to hear the scatter rules are still in. Also like the new MSV rules!
Great changes. What happens in 3ed if a combat jump fails and the models scatters into another mini, terrain piece or beyond a table edge?
I’m loving the changes to Loss of Lieutenant and MSV. It’s really apparent the level of thought and testing that went into these changes for 3rd Ed.
I’m no expert, but all in favour of rules being simpler and clearer. Looks like I picked a good time to start.
Rules look good!
every single change I have liked. if only I could part with my money to get these rules!
I can’t wait till this comes out.
Lieutenant order makes it useful, probably, and visible. Great rule change, I’m glad that its becoming less of a focus in 3rd Ed. Interesting that without a Lieutenant (loss of lieutenant), they become irregular, which makes sense. I am glad thought that a new lieutenant is a free election. This would change religious troops rule though as well… which wasn’t covered here…
MSV L1 is going to be so much more powerful, it’s going to force a balancing of armies in general. MSV L2, so it is an improvement, but the change makes sense. MSV L3 Awesome change to discover and a nice addition of countering surprise.
I love combat jump, the rule makes sense the 16″ is a little more arbitrary, but is simplifies game play. How is it going to affect the other AD though?
Infiltration is nice that its simpler as well, Its good that aggressive infiltration is punished for the risk. That Aggressive infiltration is punished as it provides no camo, and a failure makes it pretty much a useless rule.
Changes seem good
someone can tell me the release date of N3?
no place to hide now……interesting!!!
i like the new change in the lieutenant order and the loss of lieutenant
august needs to be over.
YES!
Can’t wait for it!
looking good…
Sounds like some good clarifications, excited to try out 3rd edition.
need it now!
Paitience is a virtue, but man its hard
This ‘teaser’ week is killing me
Im very happy to hear that my Oniwaban’s no longer wil be instakilled by a bad infiltration scatter. 🙂
* Oniwabans
woa those cool new rule changes, visor one will be usefull he timing now fits the game and balanced it on some playable mode, gets stronger, paratropers now you dont have to figure the scater distance so will be faster, and as always i deployed infiltrators on my side of the board, no need to go aggresive mode, haha. like it so much.
Can’t wait to get my hands on my Icestorm box, I’ve had both my daughters checking out the Infinity range for which faction they want to end up playing
I actually hadn’t looked very closely at the table before this video
It actually only contains the terrain of about two boxes (plus a container or two)
Considering I have 2-3 friends who will pick this up, I am now a lot more confident that we can put together a decent table, despite none of us really have much suitable terrain
i didn’t expect this video, is it the last one?
looking forward to seeing the full ruleset
It just keeps sounding better and better!
The table looks amazing!
Sounds like good changes all around
Well, you know how to keep me stoked!
Interesting stuff!
Can’t wait for the box to arrive
so what is the massive prise? any guess? starter box with autographs?
It’s the four boxes shown at the start of all the Infinity week videos.
New rules are really good
Can’t wait!
When will the game be issued?
Any idea of when will the 3rd edition rulebook come out ?
cool more info for a great game
The combination of the new LoL rules and the fact that the Lt is revealed by spending the Lt order both make me much happier playing a list where my Lt is super obvious 🙂
Keep it up
rules rules rules
im really excited to learn 🙂 i am dreading the painting however.. my skills will not do justice. was the video on how to expand confirmed?
What happens if you scatter off the table now with combat jump?
Interesting stuff ! brings quite a lot of change to the game
Everything I’m hearing sounds very positive. Like others have said, the loss of lieutenant is much more reasonable. I was thinking of it leaving you with 4 orders so you weren’t quite so crippled, but this is even better, and cinematically creates that feeling of loss of communication, organisation & planning amongst your troops from losing your leader. very well thought out.
I am liking the sounds of these changes
Great video, nice explanation of the rules and why they’ve changed.
Cant wait for icestorm.
New lt and lol rules are excellent, so is the change to msv.
But i can’t say i like the new ad and infiltration ones, it will be a hard time for me to get used to them.
When will we get access to that 3rd edition rulebook!? All the changes are either simplifying the game or balancing it a little more. I’m glad I got into it!
Most of these changes sound great but I hope the scatter rule does not change like that for everything. I really liked how scatter worked this edition.
I’m really excited to see how all the new changes come together in third edition!
This gets more interesting every day!!
Don’t turn it into a green jello situation! Like some other games we know…
I like all these rule changes, but the one thing that this makes me apprehensive about are infiltrators.
I’m curious (very curious) to see if they will remain as effective, given that they will no longer have the “first strike” and their version of infiltrating is likely to have the same risk/reward switch.
Still, all good improvements.
New rules look good. Waiting to know more about other changes.
Awesome changes.
The news about 3rd edition are all great. I really love all of it. But can someone please explain why all of the BoW video are in fucking 144p BY DEFAULT on my computer?? I have too manually choose 1080p every single time I open a damn video on the site.
Straight forward rules and lots of tactical depth to the game…I really am fired up to get my teeth into the game.
That sounds like some sensible changes.
So MSV 3 becomes more of a “Team Player” and less of a “Rambo” piece of gear..
So! how would I deploy a Brain do Castro who has a superior infatuation or is that gone?
When does it drop?
Really looking forward to playing these rules out.
The loss of Lieutenant rule seems like a really nice improvement and a lot more forgiving but i’m not sure i like the new Combat Jump rule. Bring on the full rulebook
I can’t wait to know the new cc rules!!
Everywhere I get buffed, I get nerfed. Should prove to make things even more interesting.
Some more good things now to get the guys at the club back into Infinity again.
Well, I’m off to act as a viral vector for my local club – let the pandemic begin!
I am really really new to Infinity (tried fow, not enough interest where I lived), and this games rules seem far simpler and hence easier to get into. Good job and kudos to Carlos and the crew.
Looks like a good time to be a beginer.
More good changes.
Cc needed an upgrade
really liking the new rules
So excited for this release after this week. Thank you so much Carlos, Killian, and everyone at Beasts of War…as always, your coverage of games in this hobby is second to no one!
Cheers!
The more I hear the more I want my box set in my hands.
Now this is what I’ve been waiting for!
So ready for N3, bring it on!
These are some interesting changes. Can’t wait for third.
I have duct-tape on hand in case my head starts busting at the seams with all this Infinity Info coming out in such a burst…..
loving the new rules the more I hear of them. I am very eager to play 3rd edition!
Some interesting changes and glad to see that MSV didn’t get completely murfed in the new rules. Dispersion is the biggest change with players perhaps looking to use ADL2 for safer drops.
Is the new book scheduled to release before the end of the year?
Great video again and looking forward to more 🙂
The updates to the rules sound great
You know it’s funny Carlos talks about how lieutenant orders were used to cheat because you never had to reveal the lieutenant, and then say offer the fact that your lieutenant got shot. so they deal with that problem by making lieutenant order a bonus order that reveals your lieutenant but possibly helps you win the game or turn the game in your favor by using an extra order.
Then it gets weird. if your lieutenant dies you lose your lieutenant order + the order for that troop model. then you go into an “irregular” order state each troop has to use their order on themselves. each model does one action. then you SECRETLY nominate a lieutenant from your remaining models. but again your supposed to offer up the fact that if during the opponent’s turn they kill your SECRET lieutenant you again are stuck in “irregular” orders…. WHY in gods name would you ever tell your opponent hey you killed my new SECRET lieutenant????
that makes no sense… and you just let people cheat a little later then when they were originally cheating.
Maybe i mis heard and you just nominate a new lieutenant at the beginning of your next turn after the “irregular” turn. in which case the loss of a lieutenant is more of a stumble for your troops then something that invites the want to lie about who your lieutenant is again.
I think you perform all of your Irregular orders, THEN, secretly note your new Lt..
At a certain point, if people are being that dis-honest, there’s a bigger concern than lieutenant orders, and that’s why are you still playing with that guy? Tournaments sure, but otherwise…
when are they coming out!!??
I bet movement gets an update.
That art work is absolutely gorgeous, though to be expected from infinity just wanted the say the reverend healer looks AMAZING.
If unit classifications (line, elite, etc) play a greater part in list building, it would certainly make things more interesting.
I really like all the rules changes that are comming out it 3rd ed. So far all of them make sense and will make for better game play. Only part that I am disapointed in is that I have to wait for them to come out.
When is the release of the new rulebook disposed to happen. Will we be able to play 3rd edition based on the rules manual operation ice storm?
Looks like it’ll be limited third: you’ll be able to play 3rd from the box, probably not generally quite yet.
Mmm, dat new Visor rule: it’s nice to see rules refined after play.
Still excited.
Really like the sound of these…!
Well done making the rules so streamlined! Really like the new loss of lieutenant rule.
Never played 2ed, but these rules seem to be very good!
wonderful stuff
I am really liking the look of 3rd edition more and more
Thanks for taking the time to reveal/introduce these changes!
Pretty excited about the new rules.
3rd ooks like the edition that will promote Infinity from a secondary game to my primary game.
The is looking better all the time. Is that possible?
Preordered my copy!
Like it, like it a lot. I get the feeling that 3rd ED is really all about balance.
These changes sound excellent, it already feels much easier to get to grips with for us newbs, without losing any of the depth. Love the way it’s built around consistency.
And Carlos, thanks for your infinite patience with us in the community, we do trust you really. Can’t wait for full 3rd ed.
N3 is looking great
Some interesting stuff there
This game has become so streamlined all those years of hard work (cough, cough) playtesting is really going to pay off ;0)
I think I need to get this, the only problem now is money!
i really dotn like the combat jump nerf 🙁
If you are in loss of Lieutenant, which model can you elect as the new one? Any model on the table, or does it have to be able to become a Lieutenant (as an option in his profile and matching the equipment)?
Its look like the game is going to become a little bit shorter, because of more fixed things, less measuring, less dice rolling..
Lets see some new rules finally!
Can’t wait for the book.
great changes all around.
Really keen to learn these rules in and out
The switch to irregular orders for loss of lieutenant makes lots of sense.
that cardboard terrain is lookng good
Me likey 🙂
Looks like 3rd edition is a good place to start, may even the playing field slightly to new players vs experienced .
These rules seem to be a lot smoother than last ed.
rule changes to improve the game not miniature sales, i’m in!
The rules look promising
Can’t wait for the new edition and miniatures!
All rule changes make perfect sense to balance the game.
Good stuuf and then….? More good stuff and more and more!!! We’re ready for take off!
Love the rewritten rules!
Hoping we see more rules change reviews when the full rulebook is released as well.
I’d love a chance to win some Infinity minis!
Great
Some interesting changes. Looking forward to it.
Wow some big changes and they sound not only reasonable but they also look like improvements.
I’m a little sad about the AD combat jump change, I liked the random factor. Like all the other rules I’ve heard though.
Even though as an Aleph player the new MSV rules will hurt more than help, I think these changes are great.
Upcoming command tokens, that’s really intriguing: what could they be? Moreover new LoL is a quite interesting change, I appreciate ‘cos it helps not to be screwed up FUBAR just for an unlucky shot on your lieutenant: me like it!
MSV L1 power up? As a Nomad I enjoy like a kiddo on xmas morning! Riot Grrls days are coming more roaring than before. Anyway I’m less happy as a Steel Phalanx player though ^^’ MSV L3 kinda of nerf not so influencing Aquila, Marut and Asura and the like can stay quite cool nonetheless.
Further on combat jump, I dunno if i like the de-randomization of combat jump dispersion (scatter) anyway it adds tactical depth to foresee how a n unlucky roll outcome will be. So as it make the rule more neat and clear, I’m sold.
Finally on infiltration, if limited infiltration rule will not change it will be a real malus to miniatures with the special ability. But as before it is to clarify and give a more smooth development to the game, so it’s ok again to me.
All in all we need to wait the complete rule set, as Bostria said, to give a full statement on the new 3rd edition. Anyway it seems to be an heck of a good job B)
I’m liking most of the changes, but I doubt about infiltration, the aggressive infiltration was rarely used in my gaming group due to dispersion, no it’ll be seen even less.
What about normal infiltration in paradiso, is going to be penalised this bad as well?
Exciting changes, can’t wait to try them out!
Looks amazing!
The 3rd edition is going to be quite interesting
Except of the new combat jump, i really like the changes. They really seem to make some debatable situations much clearer.
So, sounds like some of these rules will be a big change from second edition…
I love the new direction 3rd Ed. is taking. Consistency being the focus
Loving how simplified things are getting. This is rapidly becoming easier for the masses! 😀 With the easier to follow rules, it will allow more time for army building and more interesting fights imho, as the battle will flow a lot faster. 🙂
Really liking the changes to N3. It’s making the game so much more streamlined without sacrificing any of the flavor of Infinity.
Looks really good
I really like these videos, they will certainly help new players learn about the game and the different rules interactions.
Great job!
AS many new rules as i can get I’m loving this.
infinity ftw!
Hmmm, my Line of Command troops lose some of thir power….
Thumbs up for the new loss of Lieutenant rules, I always felt it was to punishing and restrictive – this seems like a great solution.
Really enjoying the simplified rules for Lieutenants (and Loss of)
I prefer the new loss of lieutenant rules.
It feels like a lot is lost on me as I’m not familiar with the existing Infinity ruleset. Good stuff either way!
Like how the rules have tighten up
I like the changes. My first reaction was “hmm, they’ve made it too simple”, however, like Carlos said, we should wait till the full rulebook to see it all in one piece. I’m looking forward to it!
N3 need now please yes thank yous a lots!! Smiley face emoji
All I hear is the MGS music when the enemy spots Snake. I need my box!
during loss of lieutenant, everyone becomes religious now!
I like the fact that everything Is becoming simpler to explain.
Less confusion for demos is awesome!
When does the third edition book come out again???
3rd ed is looking very promising.
3rd Edition is quickly winning me over. Can’t wait for the release!
Nice changes.
Infinity could be the one game for me this autumn and winter
Looking great
Very promising – hopefully 3rd Edition isn’t far off…
Looking forward to 3rd edition.
I love these changes to the rules.
Sounds like some reasonable changes
I hope we see re-sculpts of the Aragoto as the new base size for these is the new 55mm base and the look so darn small on them…
Good stuff this
Amazing rules, this game looks great, loving the upgrades in the new edition
Infinity is THE GAME.
cant wait for more!
all those tease vids!!!1 cant wait for n3
I like the new rules
Interesting differences from 2nd ed.
Cant wait to read the new rulebook and working more on my Nomads
Big thanks to CB for wiki , army builder, ref sheets etc…….awsome content.
really want the rulebook now
Very interesting changes, I enjoy hearing the reasoning behind them too. I hope when 3rd Ed is released CB do some videos to explain why they changed things.
I really thinking of getting into it… hard to resist!!!
looking very interesting.
Seems to be a great time to start playing this game. Getting excited for the Icestorm box to show up at my LGS.
I wonder if grenade scattering has changed too
Can hardly wait to pick this up at GenCon!
very excited about the new rules – Lt order and LOL sounds really good, Also on board with the MSV rules changes – not entirely sold on the 16″ scatter or back to the safe zone with Infiltration, but am fine with it. Sounds like they listened to a lot of the discussion on the forums…..
really good week
Maybe the MSV changes will make the Bagh Mari worth taking. Love the mini but never use it. Could I also request some form of equipment that makes impersonation redundant? I hate that stuff. Been turned over by a Fiday so many times now.
wow some pretty revolutionary and positive rules changes there. Good stuff! 🙂
Having not played the current edition I’m not familiar with the Lt rules. However, listening to the explanation and seeing the change to irregular orders, this does seem to be a smart move which will have a positive impact on being able to actually get use out of a Lt model beyond hiding it somewhere.
I’m all for anything that helps create ‘heroic’ gameplay.
Yay, infinity goodness!
Hmm interesting. Can’t wait till this comes out!
I just ordered the starter box yesterday. Altought I play Aleph, I don’t mind to start Panoceania. I am a bit troubled for the “new liutenant order token”… in the moment I spend my order, this reaveal my liutenant!
And the rule that if you stop your first parte of the order (move) in cover, but in any moment of the “move” you have out of cover, you will not get the bonus!
There is a lot to carefully think!
Absolutely love the new Nomad sculpts and can’t wait for my preorder to arrive. Excellent work CB!!
I like most of these changes. I’d really like to know how the Religious skill works with the new Loss of Lieutenant situation.
I’m not so sure about the fixed scatter for Combat Jump though. But I guess I have to see it in action before drawing conclusions.
I want that book now!
The missions will really help get new people into the game.
The missions will really help me to get other people onto Infinity
I hope to win
