Sadly Keith Flint passed away during the last week so I felt the 90s was a progression theme to move forward with as well as a nice little ode to the main man:
He does not sing in this one but man Michael Flatley with his feet of flame has no stuff on Keith Flint.
Also his oft forgotten rock band that sadly never reached ifs full potential:
Welcome All to another Hobby Weekender! As per tradition started generations ago, and handed down from wise elders, the intro blurb is shamelessly cut and paste below once again and possibly for all time…:
To the uninitiated, this is a virtual hobby hangout here on the forum. It is something fun and silly with a little more ‘oomph’. It’s not just show and tell with your models. Its chatting, getting to know one another, community building. Think of it as a sort of club like hobby session. Everyone is welcome, of course, and there are a few rules to abide by. Let it go as OT as you like with chatting with folks. BoW/OTT is a special, unique community, and this little weekly thread is a tradition on these forums. Though not for everyone, if you are still reading and keen, then it is for you. If not, best click out.
We do a few things on this thread that usually lasts from Friday or Saturday til about Wednesday or Thursday. My say is final in this silly little corner of the internet. Fear not, for this is your safe place against the outside world of flame wars, trolling and all that other crap.
(1) Make a pledge for the weekend. It can be painting, assembly, priming, converting, background writing, terrain, you name it. Just gotta be relevant to hobbying or gaming.
(2) Chat with people. Be friendly. Do get to know one another, be kind, provide positive reinforcement and constructive criticism. Do not post up your real name, credit card, bank details or home address info.
(3) I will list out questions. Answer them. Longer answers = more points. Also, points are being assigned to something else as it confused some folk for a while.
(4) Awards will be given out at the end of the thread and you shall be awarded XP, added to your account profile by the wonderful @lancorz . Think of him as the ever vigilant Batman of the forums who keeps a careful eye on the status quo, but also acts in a way, like Alfred; with a calm disposition and the attentive nature of a concierge.
(5) Scottish Pub Law rules: no discussion of religion or politics**. Keep it clean. Behave. Be nice, be kind. Walk away if you get angry. Don’t be a dick.

1. What do you miss about 90s pop culture? Im trying to make this a tad different to the more 80s themed predecessor thread.
2. What was a bad thing about the 90s? Try not to let this one get too political.
3. Technology Question: What is your opinion on the following mantra with potential dangerous, albeit for the moment mainly theoretical technology: if we can do something, should we do it? Kind of an Isaac Asimov Question.
4. Technology Question: What piece of technology are you enjoying using or is due to be released soon that you look forward to? This can be anything from an early 90s printer to VR gaming, or anything going off in a tangent.

Also I’ve had a load of Tempestus Scions through that ill be working on this afternoon when I get home from London. For now off to bed before my hospital consult later ?

A bad thing about the 90s. I’d say the direction rap took for defining culture. With regard to our last thread I think Family Guy defined it in a nutshell
If we can do something, explore the thought as to how far afield the implications may be and then go in moderation
Technology that I am enjoying the use of most at the moment is the Internet. I wouldn’t be able to shoot the shit with all of you here. In general its allowed me to do all the hobbying I can with models I find that are produced far far away from me. I get ll the news that revolves around materials that I have come to use and more that I look forward to play with.

@mage thanks for hosting once more. I’ll try and be a bit more communicative this week but flu still knocking me around a little – has run a bit of a number on me I must confess. Still, a few days of downtime now should help 🙂

1. What do you miss about 90s pop culture? Im trying to make this a tad different to the more 80s themed predecessor thread.
I miss live music venues where actual bands could play in real life to an engaged audience. I miss gaming stores getting spammed with 2nd ed AD&D supplements. I also sort of miss how to find out about bands you had to have a friend or someone put you on to them or actively seek them out and go to the trouble of ordering a record (anybody remember those?) or CD (anybody remember those?) from a bricks and mortar music shop (anybody remember those?) and how things weren’t sort of just spoon-fed to you based on an algoithm and your past listening preferences. Sorry that might come off as sounding a little elitist but it was nice when you met someone and found out you had shared interests and could swap recommendations.
Oh and speaking of elitist – I miss the internet before everyone was on it. Way back when yahoo was a physical list of websites, webcrawler was the search engine of choice and everyonne was excited about thr release of Netscape Navigatior verison 1.02 beta, and you had to load your own packet drivers and TCP-IP protocols. Hrm, might be nostalgia goggles a little…
2. What was a bad thing about the 90s? Try not to let this one get too political.
Oh that’s easy. ‘Megamixes’ where parts of 3 early techno songs were beatmixed together and repackaged as a new song. Also hypercolour t-shirts. And Alien 3. And Predator 2. And has anyone mentioned the Spice girls yet?…

Difficult one. I guess there is the caveat/ratinoale that if we don’t do it then somebody else will. If I ever had to make such a call I’d be really grateful for the combined wisdom of ethicists, professors, theoretical thinkers and philosiphers. ie, subject matter experts who have devoted a significant component of their time and intellect to working through the chain of events that may or may not unfold.

Has the screw-top egg been invented yet? No?… Oh well… Seriously, I’m lucky enough to presently have a 3D printer, which means as long as I keep feeding it filament it will print me gaming components. This week it’s been Viking longboats. Last week it was eastern european styled multi-storey half-timbered houses. Next week will be dwarven fortifications. The technology is getting better/faster/cheaper with time so I imagine these will be really prevalant (more so than now) amongst the hobby community in 3 years, and with the general populace within 5.
Pledge this week is work on my Middenheim army. That’s probably enough pledge to keep me busy 🙂
Edit – pledge Point 2: also need to clean a bunch of mins that have been soaking in stripper…

Couldn’t tell you. It was a… weird time for me. First own flat, 4 years in the military, first “adult break up”, failing at the university… mentally and emotionally I was all over the place.

War on oil. A very big fuckup.

What was that other saying? “Everybody asked if we could do it but no one asked should we do it” (something along those lines) Technology should always be theoretically researched and thought about. But when it goes piratical a high grade of care needs to be applied. But even if something in it of it self is not dangerous (like a hammer) it can still be misused. And this potential of misuse should always be in the head of people.
4. Technology Question: What piece of technology are you enjoying using or is due to be released soon that you look forward to? This can be anything from an early 90s printer to VR gaming, or anything going off in a tangent.
On a daily basis: dishwasher and washing machine. Everyone who lives in a household with 3+ people loves those things 😉 On a personal level: video games and everything that’s associated with it. (PC, console, controllers etc). Other than that nothing comes to mind but I know that some techi stuff has had me going “oh I so need/want this” but I can’t remember what that was.
Now of to waiting for the call from the repair shop that my bloody car is finished…

Tonight I’ll update my DA project. I’ve got to finish the Consecrators squad, but it’ll have to wait a little. I’ve got plans to make my own transfers for them. I’ll varnish them and call it done for now.
I’ve varnished the Dark Angels, gone for a walk, now sit n chill, dinner soon. Then hobby time.

Pledge
It is a Six Nations Rugby Weekend, so I’m not sure yet as I’ll be watching at least 2 matches and may even go out to watch them. The shed is still a mess, so I really need to get stuck into it. I also want to start learning to play Blood Bowl again and as I don’t currently have anyone to play with, I bought BB2 for the computer so I might give it a go over the weekend as well.Questions
1. In terms of music, I miss hearing things that are new and innovative. I’m not saying that all new music is derivative or bad but nothing I have listened to since the 90s has blown me away like early 90s Death Metal, DeathDoom and Black Metal when I first heard it. You also had bands like Skyclad and Bathory releasing albums that are still massive influences in metal today. I also miss when music could be innovative and a commerical success, the prime example would be The Prodigy’s Music For the Jilted Generation.2. Grunge. Not a subject to get me started on 🙂
3. No. While the saying “guns don’t kill people, people do” is true, we have also got to remember that for all its good points, the human race hasn’t been particularly nice to each other and other animals on the planet in its short history. We are also not as smart as we believe ourselves to be 🙂
4. I guess if I am going to be playing some BB2 on PC, my PC/internet enabled devices. The PC is both good and bad, but it allows me to make contact with other hobbyists like here, it allows me to talk in real time with anyone in the world for essentially a zero cost (anyone who phoned overseas in the 90s will know how much of a difference that is), I don’t have to wait on a monthly magazine or weekly radio/tv show to see what new music is being released or what gigs are on. So at the moment, it is the big technology in my life other than my CD and record player.
Music
Like last week, I am going to subject you to a semi-random Heavy Metal tune from each of the years in the 90s. We will begin with 90, 91 and 92
1990. Bathory – One Rode to Asa Bay. The closing track of probably my favourite album from 1990, Hammerheart. Epic heavy metal at its finest and a massive influence on the folk, viking and doom genres.
1991. Skyclad – Our Dying Island. Arguably the first proper folk metal band. Still very thrashy at this stage of their career.
1992. My Dying Bride – The Bitterness and the Bereavement. Doom Death is not for everyone but the violin, with the starkness of the vocals and the heaviness of the riffs creates some great emotional music.

Hmm, what Pop culture? I missed Star Trek: TNG… it was such a thing. They did that commercial tv thing of put the first three or four episodes on during prime time/ evening… then shunt it 1130pm on a Thursday or something random. Grrr.
I miss actual Grunge, and the kind of music that became “Nu Metal” before it turned to Nu Metal… aka poop.
Korn was in that later group…
I miss the Animaniacs and Rocko’s Modern Life!

What about … mainstream culture in Australia was obsessed with sport (still is really) and unlike these modern and enlightened times (ha!) where Nerd culture is accepted, back then expressing Nerd Fandom was a swift ticket to mockery.3.
I believe this one was answered… in the 90’s!Hmm, and we all know how that went down…

It’s a nice sentiment with the implications but I think too many people in science and technology wanna make a name for themselves to actually ask themselves that question. A kind of success/fame/recognition vs morality. 5 points.
That’s true with yonder internet. I would probably never get my hands on a bunch of stuff hobbywise either be it rogue trader marines with ebay nor Heroqeust which I picked up recently, to name a few. 20 points.

I also remember dial up internet, and BBS’s… I don’t exactly miss those.
@sundancer the dishwasher and washing machine are fine machines, well worth mentioning. Especially now we can have them communicate to the fridge and tv so we know our washing is done!
@robert well, that was a musical education ? I’d not heard anything of those guys, except maybe Bathory. That was pretty good.
I’ve spent so long this evening composing my replies and listening to 90’s music I’ve not really done any hobby! But the music has been great, and I’ve been listening to more on YouTube … ah good times. I spent time converting my hand written lists of minis into a spreadsheet, so I can see the whole pile in one place. Then I can mark what’s painted, delete was sold/ traded and organise groups so I can pick a focus for future projects!
While browsing YouTube I found this too. It’s alright. You might have seen it already…

Try man, if you want and if you can, its all you can do. It isnt a job on here and should be fun! Im kinda coldeyfluey today myself. Gonna carb up to heck. Feel strong enough to fight it, had a nice weight lifting session yesterday. Today is laptop, rest, hobby and binge watch for me today.

No good is an AMAZING song I love it, one of my fave prodigy tracks.

1. 30 points. I do not do the whole spotify thing. Algorithms wrankle me as I see my favourite youtubers (ironically) as well as BoW get kinda of shafted by algorithms. Gaming stores I would not have been too famliar with until the mid 90s and even then I was probably too small to notice too much of difference stuff or appreciate the cornocopia of things at the time that were present. Valid point on bands but I think the internet can get more talented people the spotlight who may have fell prone to not great luck in the past. I still deliberately buy CDs, and was sad my local record shop which closed and reopened, closed again recently. It also had difficulty getting in CDs I wanted. Im glad a DVD/CD chain reopened two stores in my nearby city of Limerick but the selection still not on par with Amazon or the like. More elitist than nostalgic to me.
I prefer the internet as it is now myself.

As for the 90s compilation thing at the end. Well I cannot listen to everything on it, its like 1/103 songs? Ill get around to it druing the week, if I can, haha. 20 points. Oddly enough I was dancing to this (Underworld, Born slippy) in a club a couple of weeks ago at a coworkers going away dude, they had a lot of 90s and dance stuff on which was heavenly.

I hoped to go back over awards and totals for the previous two threads I did but answering just this one so far has take a lot more time than I predicted. So, I am off to cook some food, watch the Umbrella Academy and paint.
