Mantic Games Reveals More For New The Ghost In The Shell RPG!
February 18, 2026 by brennon
Mantic Games has revealed more about the next big project that they are working on alongside the minds of Shirow Masamune and the folks at Kodansha. The Ghost in the Shell is going to be coming to the tabletop later this year, in 2026, as a new role-playing game.
The Ghost in the Shell: Tabletop Roleplaying Game // Mantic Games
This new role-playing game comes from game designer Alessio Cavatore and award-winning TTRPG writer Zak Barouh. It combines fast-paced, narrative-driven mechanics alongside the complex storytelling that you'd expect from The Ghost in the Shell, crafted by Shirow Masamune.
“We’re absolutely thrilled to be bringing The Ghost in the Shell to the world of tabletop roleplaying” said Ronnie Renton, CEO of Mantic Games. “This is one of the most iconic and influential science fiction worlds ever created, and we’re honoured to be entrusted with the official license. Alessio and Zak have worked tirelessly to ensure every story told at the table feels true to the original manga, allowing players to live, think, and fight in the world of Major Kusanagi and the iconic Section 9.”
Set in a cyberpunk world of political intrigue and deadly action, you'll be diving into a bespoke RPG system that features...
-
Character creation – design your own trainee agent in Section 9
-
A sophisticated synthesis system to add depth to your hero
-
Detailed and highly lethal rules for combat—and of course, for hacking
-
A rich armoury of weapons, gear, tech, and cybernetic upgrades
-
Profiles for all of the famous characters
-
Your first mission: Lost Patriot
This all sounds very cool indeed and it's neat to see Mantic having another look into the world of role-playing games, especially with their own bespoke system behind The Ghost in the Shell driving this.
The Ghost in the Shell - Teaser // Mantic Games
As you might have guessed, the role-playing game is going to be absolutely packed with background about The Ghost in the Shell world as well as amazing illustrations from the original manga. It will be fascinating to learn more and see how the game plays, hopefully with a Quickstart to get folks intrigued! This comes alongside the new anime (see the trailer at the top of this story!) so there's lots to look out for!
Original Story Below...
As Mantic pointed out in their teaser, this is going to be an introduction to one of the most iconic Science Fiction worlds ever created.
The Ghost in the Shell // Mantic Games
As Mantic pointed out in their teaser, this is going to be an introduction to one of the most iconic Science Fiction worlds ever created. The focus is going to be on Major Kusanagi herself and the rest of the Section 9 team. I'm sure we're in for quite a treat with this one, especially with all of the notable and iconic characters that have popped up over the years.
We also got the extra detail of "live, think and fight in a near-future world of cybernetics, espionage, and existential mystery". Intriguing. We're yet to know exactly what the game will be but the rumours floating around mention a role-playing game. I wouldn't put it past Mantic to also be working on miniatures and all sorts.
Drop your thoughts below on what you'd like to see...

Not sure. It’s a great anime in my book but I fail to imagine a miniature game in it. But who knows, maybe they can pull it of?
Update: Ah, so it’s an RPG not a miniature game. Alright.
RPG is kind of the only thing that makes sense for this IP.
I presume this follows the Worms/Umbrella Academy/Dark Crystal path for Mantic, where they do a big print run of one product & then just wait for it to sell out. I don’t picture it being like Walking Dead All Out War or Halo Flashpoint where this is an evergreen title that has dozens of SKUs and an extensive future expansion map planned. But I dunno for sure.
Isn’t walking dead focused on putting All The Show Characters on the table? Maybe it’s gonna be like that for GITS. Or like Star Wars shatterpoint, for a non-Mantic example.
Oh, so it’s a TTRPG? Aight.
Actually this would be a good one for the evergreen treatment if the rules are good since it has a pretty good following what with Ghost in the Shell being the big cyberpunk anime franchise (one could even argue the big cyberpunk franchise or at least best received and stable one) and one the more well known anime. It also has a lot of room to work with for tactical style TT games.
Skirmish game…don`t think so, maybe something like “hell boy” board game, stories and police work looking clues, hacking etc ?
Does The Laughing Man get a mini or just his logo?
Ok gotta say, this was one of the very first anime I ever watched as a youngling, so I’m all over this one and if its on Kickstarter I’ll be all in.
Not with Alessio Cavatore. Hard pass.
Strange that they decide to go ahead with this as there’s already a GITS TTRPG that was kickstarted last year. I don’t think there is market space for two TTRPGs in the same universe. At least I don’t think there is for me. I would have entertained a board game with minis but two TTRPGs is one too many.
There always a place for at least one good GITS TTRPG. We just don’t know which of the two (if any) will be the good one.
Mantic’s RPG is based on the original manga, the GitS RPG that was on KS is based on the Prod IG anime series. Kinda like how there’s a minis game based on the Walking Dead tv show and a minis game based on the original Walking Dead comics.
Any Ghost in the Shell is a good thing, and it just so happens that I like the idea of an RPG…
Oh no, it mentions TTRPG, i can hear Gerrys distaste from here.
Always great to see more stuff from mantic, nearly always these days a great quality product,.
