Nice video , that dude reminds me of Mark from the show Peep Show on hulu.
The soil scatter here looks a lot more like loam / soil. The scatter in the autumn kit looked like wood shredder material. I like this a lot better. And the forest scatter is also superior to the autumn scatter – more variety of shape to the mix.
Woodbark for rocks? Going to have to demo that one. Those shapes are too flat?
The fallen leaves are awesome! When you dropped those onto the screen I was almost shocked at how cool they look. Mostly the variety of colors that got me.
Looks like about 12 – 14 pieces of slate. Not enough for an entire army. Can you order just the individual items?
No static grass? I guess its not a big deal as you can buy it separately. And I guess appropriate, as you usually only find tall grass in meadows.
Ok – just some ideas to consider with regard to basing technique:
On your base – with regarding leaving things natural or painting them – Now this is highly subjective of course, and everyone has their own opinion, but to my eye, leaving natural objects unpainted rarely translates appropriately to scale. For example the stone, it just looks like a small piece of stone to me. It does not look like a massive slab of stone. It’s a tough choice, because the natural stone coloring is very appealing, and hard to duplicate well with paint, but as I say, I rarely see these enhance the sense of scale if left unpainted.
Another issue is how you find stone in forrests – you don’t find slabs just sitting on top of the forest floor, you find them protruding from the floor. This is hard to pull off unless the bottom of the stone you are working sits flat on the base, or you have to green stuff the bottom to make it look like the stone is emerging from the earth.
That said, these are great, and I am looking forward to the basing demo’s!
@ubiquanon, you are just exquisite !
Your comments are always detailed, and you always expect the best… It’s motivating !
I’ve been wanting to mix the autumn and woodland sets as soon as I set eyes on them…
I’ll give a demonstration of how to use bark for rocks one of these days, as well as how to do a bigger base with protruding rocks.
I guess you don’t get static grass in the woodland set because tall grass rarely grows under trees, unlike ferns… But you get some in the Autumn set !
As for slates, I really don’t think such big protruding rocks are for the rank and file… Not all of your troops are going to get a big rock to stand on, it would just be silly, don’t you think ? It’s only for the characters !
However, if you must, you will indeed have to get some more.
I think the slate bits could be used in a “non-protruding” way to figure old standing stones or similar celtic constructions… But you could use them with green stuff and make little cave entrances, or little dolmens and cromlechs.
From seeing them up close, I think the slabs of slate are looking good enough unpainted for tabletop quality, but if you’re painting to GD standard or if you’re doing a diorama, you have to control the light of the whole mini and its base, and that means painting the shole base, including the grass (which will have to be made not from flock, but from sand, or some similar material, then sprayed and painted just like the miniature, of course).
Thanks again for being so keen…

You can order individual pots and if you buy 9 you get one random pot free, so it almost works out the same cost as the kit (the kit is still a little better value since its fixed).
Thanks kaine – one more question. Is the slate easy to break up? The sizes included are about as big as a base, so I would probably want to break the rocks into smaller sizes for more variety.
Not really, the slate we include is fairly solid, we do try and include a good mix of pieces, we have various other “rock” elements available on the site if you need something smaller.
This was the kit that I bought for basing my KoW Elves. Its very nice stuff and I got two small bags of materials from the Autumn kit i think as samplers which was nice of them. Good job.
Thanks for the video review! It pretty much sold me and I just picked up this kit. I can’t wait to use it. I originally had to buy a bunch of separate things to achieve a autumn basing myself. Definitely going to be planning on using this kit for my next army!
I am trying to do a toxic swamp theme in the basing for my Cryx force in Warmachine, do you think i could do something with this to make the desired affect?
@scavysbro … Yes you could. you can also make a swamp/poisonous water effect with PVA glue, mixed with green ink (or food colouring).
Thanks I didnt think of using PVA glue with a green ink. How much ink would i need for the bases you think?
Not much… a little goes a long way.
I use water effects, and a mere drop is enough.

Might be worth waiting a week or so as well, our next kit will contain water effect.
Cool ! I was wondering when you’d do that sort of thing…
