DreadBall is a two-player game where players can dash, slam and dunk on their opponents. Move the referee out of sight of your own fouls or gain more dice through coach advice. Spectacular plays are rewarded with fan adulation in the form of skill cards.
In this video, we look at the array of miniatures between the types of players - the jack, the striker and the guard. We also look at two of the teams - the Ninth Circle Tree Sharks and the Draconis All-Stars, and also a sneak peek at the DreadBall Ultimate board.

DREADBALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This version is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Looks nice…
Super awesome video, fingers crossed – i bought the 1st edition many moons ago, and they have been in storage – about to get them out as my hobby spark has been reignited, fingers crossed i win one of these awesome sets
Looking forward to playing some 2nd edition. Dreadball is a great game
Interesting, I am looking to this week to find out if it is worth getting into Dread Ball, the box looks ok, although I am not keen on the way they minis have been based.
it looks like they have made jacks useful again. Looking forward to trying the new rules out.
…forgot to mention that Speedball 2 is available for the Ipad.
DreadBall is close enough to Speedball, I don’t think it would take long to tweak the rules to make a Speedball game
Very nice improvements over the first edition
Love dreadball Need to give 2nd ed a try but my 1st ed league is still running (my nameless team, the Lost Atlantean Kings, is kicking ass 🙂 ) – maybe after I’ll look at a 2nd ed core set or an update thingy.
Tree sharks looking fierce though!
I was really toying with re-buying into dreadball after having to sell off my collection a few years ago. Looks like I’ve chosen the right time with a new set released. It must be a sign.
Fantastic – really excited to play 2nd Edition properly – tried the playtest rules out quite a bit last year and really enjoyed the changes from 1st Edition!
sounds amazing for someone who wants to start the game for the first time
The rules changes sounds good, the new teams sound fun, and I the matte board is a nice improvement too even if you’re not filming.
There’s a copy in our club, I’ll need to take a look 🙂
I am an original Dreadball Striker pledge Kickstarter backer. Delighted to see the evolution of the game. Always felt that Jacks were a bit naff. Hopefully they can be better utilized in tis edition !!
Box art reminds of the Rollerball movie (original… not the terrible reboot).
The players should have rollerblades….
Looks interesting, but the scoring system seems odd… slides back and forth?
It’s a really fun concept if you get to 7 it’s an automatic win otherwise the game becomes a tug of wär with scores being erased by your opponent. It’s one of my favourite parts
The tug of war is actually pretty great, the automatic game over at 7 points adds a lot of tension and rewards risk taking when you go for the big 3 point score.
Throw in the fact that you never reset the board after scoring and you will find that there is a lot of back and forth. If you throw everything forwards to score you risk leaving yourself open to conceding when the ball is fired back onto the field and your opponent gets the next activation.
Time to dig out my old Brokkrs
Speedball 2! That takes me back to a time of Cheese Toasties watching Transformers, followed by homework, dinner and speedball 2.
This new set looks great
Dreadball is the most played game in our gaming group, with two leagues and multiple single matches played. Can’t wait to run a league with the new 2nd edition rules, as it seems a lot of the changes are stuff we’d already started houseruling.
Dreadbaaallll!!!!
Nice to see Elmer & Dobbs made it out of the kickstarter campaign and into production.
This looks great!
This is my sports miniatures game of choice, definitely going to get this.
season 1-3 of 1st ed was top
Just finished my Brokkr team in time for 2nd Ed. Go check out my WAYPN pic!
they look great love the Iron Ancestor in there and the red and black is striking and because I’m a Down man I approve of them for team colours 😀
I need to paint mine… actually I have 26 teams that I need to paint, I think once my Irish are done I’ll be cleaning and colour priming.
played a rake of games last week getting back up to speed with it and it’s a lot of fun, really improved the game, the Sunday club may find a league in their future that they are unaware of 😉
Nice to see an update to this game. Will be fun to see what the week brings.
If sam is looking for a linguist, I’m a real cunning one.
I don’t think his bread is buttered that way son
*bing bong * This is a customer service announcement. Would the Carry On film enthusiast and winner of the bad joke competition in aisle 3 make his way quietly to the exit for his prize where he will be given a large one. Thank You *bing bong*
Great. i wanna get back in to playing Dreadball. Is there an up grade pack for veterans of version 1?
yes there is indeed http://www.manticgames.com/mantic-shop/new/dreadball-the-futuristic-sports-game/product/dreadball-veteran-bundle.html
It gives you the new card deck and a monster 200+ page book, full rules, every team including those from Xtreme, all the MVPs and even the Dreadball Ultimate rules.
Well worth it, I love mine it’s been well thumbed through over the past couple of months
Space monkeys, robots and sumo lizards oh my.
don’t know why they said monkies, they look more like dogs
I consider them cats 🙂
@avernos
Ever heard of the Kowakian monkey lizard? 🙂
Believe it’s not about the faces (btw, four eyed and with a snout like from a Jim Hanson monster show): they are agile mammalian tree dwellers.
I haven’t, but I have heard of the Sumatran Rat-Monkey. The story goes that a slave ship was wrecked and the rats swam ashore and raped all the little spider monkies 😀
It looks to be full of goodies
Looks like a good game. Like the pre assembled Minis.
ooh I am so into this
Loved the original looking forward to the rest of the week!
Just played a game of the new edition last night. I really like the changes.
Great game, the rule updates look like they should make it better.
Nice to see a new edition and the boxed set looks brilliant
Looks good the turtles might have to come off the shelf
Never played Dreadball but this does look nice. Would prefer a much closer look at the minis though. How well detailed are they?
Here are my reviews of the minis: http://alkony.enerla.net/component/tags/tag/1952-minirange-warpath-DreadBall
I currently edit the articles on the second edition minis, they should be complete in a couple of days.
Nice to see the figures cast as one piece.
The figures are actually multi-piece casts, but they come glued together
That’s full of content
I think the figures are decent. I hope the gameplay is quick and keeps everyone interested.
I’d give it a go.
This edition has a very nice set of rules
Love Dreadball. New teams look cool.
dammit! I recently picked up DreadBall 1st edition and all the expansions and extra models from ebay!! Bad Timing! 😀
If you got them at a good price them consider it a barging. Grab the veterans pack to get the full rules, teams and the new cards and you can play what you have
seems like both Dreadball and Mantic are doing great!
I think I would choose Tree Sharks. Will have a look at this game to start my kids in tabletop
I am very intregued about Dreadball, while it seems simple yet complex at the same time, I am new to the wargaming hobby in general, I think Dreadball would be a good way to get started.
Dreadball looks like a fun game
I’ve spent a lot of time working with their Deadzone and Dreadball Extreme kickstarter sculpts and the mould lines and material are awful to work with. I’d love to see John trying to clean up that Yndij team on video and then priming and painting to see how much swearing he does and get an honest review of them, compared to older mantic models.
I have mine in front of me, the mould lines are slight, it’s a more boardgame style plastic, like the walking dead.
I’ve found a quick scrape/file causes a bit of burring, but then I brush on thin polycement, the super thin one plastiweld, smooths it out and you’re golden. could do a full team in 30mins if I didn’t get distracted by everything else.
The Tree Sharks look my kind of team
Why do people keep bringing great stuff to the market when I have no money so I end up being grumpy!!!
Already got my book and trying to catch up on the rules. We had a nice league in the first edition and maybe we can return to the fields of glory of Dreadball. Ravnous Ratts, Go!
Been playing since it first came out. And by the end of 1st ed it was in need of rebalancing and a lot of players had dropped out. Only had a couple of games of the new edition but it looks like they’ve managed. Haven’t tried the captains yet but i like the look of them. Hopefully it’ll get people playing again cos its a great little game.
Never played Dreadball as only discovered it a couple of days ago, watching the Dreadball Academy videos on the BoW YouTube channel. They were enough for me to know I had to play this game, and now I find out the 2nd Edition has landed! Happy days
now this is a week I have been waiting for a long time… love dreadball!!! the new edition looks great
Time to dig out the old dreadball models.
the little changes are bringing a already good game to the next level.
This edition of dreadball looks good
The box is very impressive. Not very fan of the minis, but painted they look rather nice. I will watch the rest of the videos, I like Bloodbowl but never tried this one.
loved the 1e of this game, got put off a little by the proliferation of teams, especially the power creep of teams like the rebs and the convicts. Am over the moon they’ve had a chance to review and balance the teams.
Looks good! Let’s play!
Wow looks nice.
I must try that game is interesting.
Looks nice. I like the colored plastic pre-assembled minis. But the board design appears not as pretty as the first edition game. Also would like to see a mat version of the board.
Looking forward to all the Let`s Plays, one of my favorite things to listen and watch to while painting
Looks pretty promising actually. Like dem robots.
DreadBall is full of stars!
Ooh Shiney
This looks lovely
The box and game looks good, I’ll give it a try
The game looks fun, I like the gameboard a lot
Very good looking. Is the pre assembling working well?
From what I’ve seen it’s working, but it could be better.
The glue damages the transparent acryl base, and you can’t remove the glue from the base.
The minis hold together well, altough one of the minis came apart at the seams while prying the base off.
And those bases sometimes cry for removal, as the figure is not always inserted properly, so you might need to reposition it if you are serious.
Unboxings are fun! It’s like it’s Christmas! Especially with those red and green minis 🙂
Looks like it could be fun, look forward to watching the games!
Seems like it’s going to be a very nice update.
As a Bloodbowl player, i think it`s time to branch out and look in to Dreadball. Great unboxing guy`s, liking the two sided pitch idea.
A great uplift of the original rules
Never had the chance to play this. Looking forward to the videos on this to learn more about it. So far it is very interesting. I like the Ninth Moon Team. Looking forward to the play through.
I can’t believe Dreadball is out since 2012! Dreadball is one of the first games I started playing at my current club. Before this I hadn’t really played games for about 5 years. I remember thinking that it was like Bloodbowl, improved. The game sort of fizzled out at the club when a lot of the guys playing it moved away, but this second edition seems to have sparked some interest from new guys, so I’ll be looking to get this game back on the table!
One of the few Mantic games I don’t own…yet
These minis are top notch!
I got the first edition and it is so much fun. Looking forward to getting to play 2nd Ed. 🙂
i’m hoping this will bring the game back at my flags. I’ve had a corp team just waiting to hit the pitch.
flags=FLGS
Great content, I’d like to play it if I had the opportunity 🙂
Loving 2nd edition! Keen to get my Draconis All-Stars painted up.
I like it that you can fit everything in the box, even the expansions
Seeing what they do, Tree Sharks are my fav
This was a great overview of the game! I’ve linked it in our article about the set: https://alkony.enerla.net/english/the-nexus/board-games-nexus/board-game/dreadball-ed2-board-game-base-set-from-mantic-games-2018-board-game-base-set-review
