Richard Borg’s The Great War Gets French Army Expansion
November 14, 2017 by brennon
Teaming up with Plastic Soldier Company, Rich Borg's The Great War is back on Kickstarter with a new expansion for The French Army.
The new expansion adds in a whole selection of new scenarios for you to play using the French from World War I. There will be twelve in total covering these historical battles but you will also get some fantastic new models.
In addition to a host of new French soldiers with which to build up your forces and play your games on the tabletop they also have plans to add in some new British personnel as well.
If this expansion is completely new to you alongside the game as a whole they also have options for you to pick up the base game and the Tank Expansion to get you started in this superb-looking recreation of the battles at the front lines during World War I.
This is, of course, most fitting for 2018. There will be a retail version available it seems for The Great War Centenary Edition. Make sure to give this one a look and find out more about the gameplay aspects at work here as it looks like it could be perfect for history buffs.
What do you think of The Great War?

A shame that PSC have such a patchy record on KS.
I like the minis! Great to finally see some officers..
Main gripe I’ve got is that it is neigh on impossible to get them out of their sprues without snapping the bayonets.. 🙁
All minis are now ‘off sprue’ and in a softer plastic. You can get just the French or French + replacement British and Germans in the new plastic off sprue as a bundle in the KS.
This is what the new units do…
1) Elite (Stormtroopers)
– May move up to 2 hexes and battle.
2. Engineers
– May move onto a hex with wire and remove the wire from a hex and still battle.
– When ordered and the unit is not adjacent to an enemy unit, instead of moving and/or battling, may fortify its own hex
– Instead of moving and/or battling when in an adjacent hex to a damaged bridge, may repair the bridge. (Flip the Token)
3.Flamethrower
– May not battle if moving more than 1 hex.
– When attacking in Close-Combat, the targeting unit may not ignore flags.
4.Machine Gun Loader
– A Machine Gun unit with a loader has a range of 5 hexes: (3)-4-4-1-1
5. Mortar Loader
– A Mortar unit with a loader figure has a range of 6 hexes: (3)-3-3-2-1-1
6. Light Machine Gun Unit
– May move 1 and battle or 2 hexes and not battle.
– May “Cross-fire” with other machine gun units.
– An infantry unit with an LMG has a range of 4 hexes: (4)-3-1-1
7. Marksman
– An infantry unit with marksman figure, when the unit does not move, will roll 1 additional die in ranged combat.(3)-3-2-2
8. Officer
– May move up to 1 hex and battle or 3 hexes instead of 2 and not battle.
– After a successful close-combat may gain ground and is able to battle a second time during the turn.
9. Mortar Spotter
– When scoring a hit in ranged combat place a range marker on the enemy unit. It is not placed when the unit retreats.
– When a unit with a ranged marker is targeted again from any mortar unit, the unit will roll 1 additional battle die and will score on the deadly side.
10. Forward Observer
– When within line of sight and 5 or fewer hexes to an enemy unit, it’s reserve artillery has observation advantage to the sighted unit.
– When the reserve artillery has observation advantage the first target dice do not cost an HQ.
