Let’s Play: Bolt Action 2nd Edition Demo Game [Archive Rewatch!]
January 7, 2022 by dignity
Warlord Games are in the studio to show off Bolt Action Second Edition and we thought we'd get stuck into a Demo Game to show it off. Who will win; cast your votes now!
Note: You can NO LONGER Win The Band Of Brother Set
Shop Bolt Action @ Store.OnTableTop
John will be playing as the British army and Justin is opposing him with the Germans. Who do you think will win, and will you be diving into the Second Edition ruleset?
Let Battle Commence!

A lot of the changes that have been made we had already house ruled them in my local play group. Great job.
Completely agree. We also had some house rules, that went in the direction of 2nd edition. But again, we had the chance to talk to Alessio on the bootcamp and got a good idea from him, were the weakspots of the system are and how to fix them.
First?
better luck next time 😉
Shouldn’t have started to watch the video before remembering to post 😀
I might have to get into BA as it’s the only way I am going to get a game if anything at the minute
Sweet….looking forward to this on my big Tv tonight, see what its like Vs the weird war one 1st edition one..
Sorry, screams earlier edition of 40K with the roll more than 6 on a d6 mechanic. And Justin starts off with lucky anti-tank shot in another game. Bullets do go through bushes IRL.
Last weekend introduced a new player to Bolt Action. We had a lovely game with some US armoured Infantry versus German Heer. The new player was the US and I was Germany. The objective was to take a crossroad in the middle of the table which was flanked on one side by a row of houses with hedges at the back and ruins and stone walls on the other flank. From the start I took a heavy pounding in the first few rounds from a M8 Greyhound opening fire on my Leutnant whom was running along a stone wall and being shot to pieces. The Sherman took out my Hetzer in a nerve wrecking firefight and the remaining Infantry which was now at the backyard of the houses was coming under heavy fire from a M3 Halftrack who was opening up fire and a few US units whom entrenched themselves in the row of houses at the crossroads. Things were looking bleak indeed! But in the last 2 rounds the tables turned suddenly when my panzerfaust took out his Sherman and M3 and my veteran grenadiers assaulted and cleared out the houses one by one. From what started to look like a certain defeat the germans pulled off a victory. It was an exiting game, enjoyed by both and we now have a new player to the group!
Love the cinematic actions and true line of sight of Bolt Action. There just is something about looking down the road on a nice layout and see that Sherman dooming up from behind a ruined building and taking aim on your Hetzer.
Nice intro into what BoltAction 2 will be like and can see the haters and naysayers comparing it to WH40k because of the template use; but I see this change as a good one and not to be compared with other games.
Cry Havoc! and let slip the Beasts of War.
Sadly haven’t got Bolt Action yet so no moments to report on so I’ll just spoonerise a Shakespear quote.
My best bolt action moment was during my second game against the Germans, the first action of the first round was the Puma that opened fire against my sherman firefly. After rolling three 6 in a row my sherman explodes!! The Puma is a great armoured car, but the player was very very lucky 🙂
I’ve a limited experience with Bolt Action but had a great intro game a couple of months ago, my British were thoroughly thrashed by Germans though, the dice gods were against me that day. Couldn’t hit a barn door……nothing changes.
I think my best Bolt Action moment came from my first time playing. I don’t actually own the game but the people at my local gaming club were kind enough to lend me one of their armies for the day at the club and play the game, and what a blast.
My favorite moment from that game came about from me being outnumbered completely. I was US and my enemy was Germany, and from the beginning of the game he had the turn advantage, removing my armour from the battlefield leaving me with nothing but infantry and mortars on the battlefield versus his armoured force backed up with some more Jerry firepower.
He held the initiative for most of the game, taking my units out left and right, and finally, huzzah! the dice swung in my favour and green after green order dice were brought from the bag, the initiative was mine. Pushing and outflanking my opponent, brewing up his tank in a flurry of bazooka fire, without him being able to defend himself was exhilarating as a first time player.
Goodbye goes the you go, I go turn order I was used to. This is what the chaos of WWII should feel like. I suppose my best moment of Bolt Action came not from what happened in the match (unfortunately, everything balanced out and the might of the Jerry firepower shredded up the last of my men, and, by the way, when you feel excited to even LOSE a game, that’s how you know that this game is for you) but from how the game made me feel.
I have watched Band of Brothers, I have watched Saving Private Ryan, but through the kindness of my local club members and through the phenomenal game that Warlord have presented us, I was finally IN the action. I felt it, I could imagine the bullets and shells whizzing past, ripping holes through buildings, followed by the guts and glory of the American infantry charging towards the German defensive line. I was in a miniature band of brothers that day. This game has changed my whole perspective on wargaming, and I cannot wait to finally get my hands on my own army and rulebook.
Also, Kris, if you’re reading this, thank you so much for allowing me to borrow your army that day, I owe this all to you.
Best Bolt Action moment came just recently in a game a fortnight ago. British vs. Germans with me playing my favorite late war Red Devils list. Called in artillery support through my FAO in turn one. Before turn two the barrage hit the point I wanted it to be, with two German 10 men infantry squads within 12″. Rolled two sixes in a row and with all the hits these created wiped our more than half of each squad and my opponent failed his morale checks. 20 kills within one round…well after all the game turned out to be a draw. Another great thing about Bolt Action imho, almost no game’s ever lost before the last die is rolled.
Justin can look serious? :O First I could not recognise you @dignity on the photoshoped picture. 😛
I really enjoyed watchng that game! The rule tweaks make sense. Well done guys!
The vid certainly shows the superiority of Chain of Command, you wouldn’t get Shermans charging down an AT unit that wouldn’t even be visible that’s for sure.
I’m pretty sure that’s something only a newbie like me would have done in Bolt Action.
It was never going to end well and TBH it shows.
Keeping those tanks back would have delayed showing the new rule changes.
We have a pretty active bolt action scene in San Diego, so we have a lot of tournaments. A few tournaments back, I was playing as my Soviets, I have NO air defense and I went up against two American Armies (in two different games) each with double airstrikes. 4 airstrikes were called and 4 airstrikes screwed up and destroyed 4 of their own tanks/units. Clearly the spirit of the Workers protected the Red Army that day.
Well….a second Edition is reason enough to get into the game at last 🙂
The standout moments for me were using heavy artillery to wipe out ridiculous amounts of infantry, I do think the new rules with templates are more sensible but I’ll no longer be able to cackle as 5 men take 15 hits!
Hi guys,
With regard to the question on what I think of the rule changes, and if there are any additions. I like the changes, esspecially for the officers and co-drivers firing vehicle weapons.
Personally we never play with the rule that empty transport are removed when somebody says boo. That is in my view a bit of a strange rule, and I fully understand John’s look when it happens in the video. We have a co-driver gunning people down, but one german runs up to them and they are out of the game, that is just odd.
I thought the rule for empty transports was very strange also at first. After giving it some thought I can see that this is a good way to keep the transports to their intended job. The transports could be abused somewhat as mobile armoured MG nests otherwise, something that regular infantry would struggle to deal with in numbers. The mobile MG nest is more of an armoured car role, with force organisation rules keeping the number in check. Having said that, I have no experience playing the game, yet 🙂
Like what they have done with 2.0.. also like what was done with K’47.
My friend and I picked up the Tank Fury set each and swapped tanks around a while back. I’ve gone Allied and he’s gone Germans. I have number of shots and he had high armour. While we have fun playing (Always more fun than i remember when we haven’t played for a while) I can’t help but think it feels a little too weighted in favour oh high armour. The germans can put out tanks that most allied tanks need straight 6s to chip the paint on, and infantry laregly seems to be pointless if theres tanks on the table. Its a very fun game, and I loved it when my 6 shermans had a dice spike early in a game meaning he was down a tank before he could shoot so with my 6 models vs his 3 I was always going before him and taking down or pinning his tanks before they could do anything. Likewise I hate it when I end up in situations where I need dice spikes to achieve anything.
I haven’t gotten into Bolt Action yet and am eager to explore with the new edition. If I win the Starter box, that would be a great moment to springboard into the hobby!
ok this looks good. I like the look of the Tank platoon John was using as there was not to many infantry to paint up.
Can only put 5 men into a carrier, so two carriers, ten guys, an observer and a commander, the rest is allllllll armour! 😀
keep in this way, the game is one of my favourites !
Better than watching movie..! I was really enjoying this video again gents, do MORE 🙂
@chez
Always great to see you as umpire!
@johnlyons
Clearly you can now justify the acquisition of yet more Sherman Vs!!!
@diginty
Very proud of you, Sir! You’ve led the Fallschirmjäger Regiment 6 to their first broadcasted victory!!!
Let me know if you -in the light of BA2 and Konflikt ’47- want additional units for them painted up 😎
Looking forward to your next gaming video chaps, well done all!
Do I really need justification? It’s like someone asking me “How many sugars do you take in you tea?” Keep adding until that cup is syrup!
I had my first Bolt Action games at the Tabletopbattle tournament i Norway this year. Never played the game, but thaught by you guys! Had five awesome games. The last game was blue on blue, US vs. US, set on a great pacific table. My opponent brought a forward air observer, and put the marker on my Sherman. Which ended up hitting his own Chaffe! So he tried again, and ended up taking out his Greyhound! Then he tried charging my veteran snipers. Who was invunrable apperantly. He then tried charging my howitser crew, they were hard as nails as well! A very fun game, but in points we ended on a draw! I learnt a hard lesson on snipers vs. weapon teams!
Right that’s bedtime viewing sorted, just gotta finish all the chores round here before I can paint/chill for a bit..
I’m interested to see how the new blast templates are going to be implemented.. Will it be what’s under the template is what’s hit?? Or that’s the number of hits the unit takes and casualtys are removed from the front of the unit.. I wonder because the what’s under the template is killed can lead to sniping blast templates that always seem to hit the nco at the centre..
I would like recce to have more benefits such as denying enemy ambushes perhaps.. But we shall see.. Right better go get my long list of jobs done then I can watch and find out eh..
…..Love the changes, it really upgrades your Strategic tool box…..Very nice Leveling Changes to the Weapons also….and @dignity you are on a roll mate!!!!…
First time seeing a game played and enjoyed it.
One thing seemed odd, may be I missed something, the Bren carriers moved and fired but the German observer poked his head out and they ran away ??
If an empty troop transport ends up closer to an enemy than a friendly unit they bug out.
If they had stayed with the infantry as support they would have been ok ?
Forget my above just reread your post.
I was hoping they would change that rule in the 2nd edition. I find that one of the more “unrealistic” rules especially at the points cost and now they are allowing them to fight after unloading their troops. While I know and understand that BA is not a simulation game of WWII but there are plenty of examples where transports fought bravely and even came out ahead in battles.
When we say “empty” transport – we mean no crew or no infantry passengers?
I’ve won plenty of games of Panzer Leader on the last desperate turn with “empty” halftracks. Sumbitches still have a .50 cal, if not .50s and .30s too. SdKfz-251s and the like usually have at least an MG34/42. That’s enough to shoot up a fireteam or at least give a squad a moment of pause.
Damn, awesome photoshop work! And I haven’t finished the video yet (and deliberately not reading the comments yet . . .) but is Justin on track to actually WIN a game? 😀
Have to agree with you on the Photoshop. Seems like someone new at the shop is really having an impact or is allowing someone else the time they need.
Got about 1.5 turns in before dinner and now it just may have to wait for tomorrow.
I really hope that we get to see more of these battle reports in the future as these really get people interested in the games.
😀
Yes excellent work! Is this from Band of Brothers or A Bridge Too Far?
I’m almost positive this is 1st Sgt John Martin and the hapless British tank commander from Episode IV of Band of Brothers. They’re entering the town, Easy Co Airborne infantry screening ahead of XXX Corps’ tank column.
Just like you’re supposed to . . .
Martin and Randleman see the Tiger behind a Dutch building. Martin and Babe run back to the lead Cromwell to talk to the British tank commander.
Martin: “You got a can opener, Babe?”
Babe: “”fraid not, sarge.”
[Martin climb up on tank]
Martin: “You got a kraut tank, right behind that building.”
Tank CO: “I don’t see him.”
Martin: “You put a couple o’ shells through that building, you’re gonna see him reeeeal good.”
Tank CO: “I can’t. My orders are no unnecessary destruction of property.”
Martin: “I’m tellin’ ya, he’s RIGHT THERE!”
Tank CO: “Look, I believe you, but if I can’t see the bugger I can’t bloody well shoot him, can I? Are you staying or going?”
I know that scene gets a lot of chuckles and woeful shaking of heads. “Unnecessary destruction of property” seems like a dumb obstruction in the midst of a full-scale war. But for Market Garden, it actually made a degree of sense. We’d just liberated France, and about destroyed the whole country in the process. Bombers alone had killed something like 30,000 French civilians. Allied commanders were aware of some serious backlash from French civil leaders, and when going into Holland, the Allies were keen on keeping the Dutch people “on our side.”
Excellent battle report, guys!
I love your table, I love the minis, and I love Bolt Action!
Waiting for the second edition, and the rules corrections seems to be very good!
So much to play with Warlord Games, between Gates of Antares, Conflikt ’47 and Bolt Action 2! Great time!
I had this dream I was at an amazing urban war zone table and across from each was my opponent. He strange looking – a bit like Kylo Ren with the mask. And appropriately he had just set up a German tank column heading into the city. I knew I was supposed defend the objective for several turns but…I had no army. Suddenly, low and behold on a big screen TV off to our side, the Beasts of War weekender show started playing. And it is announced that I have won the Band of Brothers set (US). Justin then steps out of the screen and hands me the box. It glows Briefly and I quickly open the box to discover a fully painted, ready to play US force. Setting up in moments, I look at my opponent, Kylo is now unmasked and it is Warren. There is a look of horror as he sees the placement of my troops. I reach for a handful of dice and let loose on the table. As they tumble the dream ends and I wake up.
Warren as Kylo? Image overload – Shudder!
Was at the BA Boot camp last year too many great moments, my dice rolling was atrocious. My sniper did well. Mortars were absolutely useless. Have to get up to play again
Well this looks fun, I may have to investigate this after K47, since they can have some common models. Is K47 is based on BA 1st Ed rules or 2nd Ed rules? just out of general curiousity (no it’s not out of curiousity if I have to learn one set I’d be more likely to buy into something which is more similar to the first ). Anyway, damn that looked fun
I would be interested in what @johnlyons and @dignity have to say.
Konflikt47 is supposed to be a stand alone game but is there a huge difference or is it easy to jump back and forth, which Bolt Action is it based on?
The game both have a core system, so switching back and forth is easy enough, its just making sure you keep an eye out for the differences, also K’47 is based on BA1 with a few new twists in the mix.
I still find it odd that K’47 is based on first edition when they knew second edition was to be realised only weeks later? Templates etc in K ’47 make even more sense. Is my K ’47 rule book going to be out of date in less than six months I wonder?
Cool im looking forward to trying the new rules out soon. The commander/officers new ability can certainly be used to huge advantage. But i never realized how powerful Flame throwers where in the game. Gonna have to pick some up for both my armys
My best bolt action moment was in last tournement, when as my last action of the turn my commander unit fired on enemy infantry. On the nest turn this unit activates only to go fubar and kill his own commander in friendly fire. Lost the game but had a blast.
Over all a great video. As they usually are when Chez is across 🙂
Really like the terrain changes they pretty much match what we have been doing. The flame thrower changes seem reasonable. I really like the fact that transports are more useful. The template seems reasonable. The commander changes are great and I look forward to getting my rule book and reading all the new rules.
I was hoping to see more reactions and a check needed to make them like in konflikt47 and Antares.
I’ve never played Bolt Action but I’d love a chance to win and make some new memories! Thanks!
Great demo game. The new BA2 rules are very effective, and the command option brings in a method of coordinated actions that previously would have been difficult to achieve with the luck of the dice draw. Commanders have become a lot more valuable to the strategy planning. The other rule changes work well. Bolt Action just got better! Looking forward to playing with the new rules.
Great job!
the flamethrower should be a tear drop template, over all well done
Nice I will need to pick it
I like the new rules. MGs beefed up; flamethrowers and assault rifles toned down; rally made more viable; Bren Carriers can shoot after booting out the infantry. I’ll miss the lunacy of the air observer, though the artillery observer has more potential for mayhem now.
I’d have liked to have seen if the close combat rules had changed, but it was a great battle report. I’m off to pre-order the new rules – and fiiddle with my Brits list 😉
How did you guys make the gravel looking sections of the board? The grey squares that the farmhouses are sat on I mean.
@debriefyt The guys made it with rubble mix, you can find a video about it here: http://www.beastsofwar.com/liveblogentry/super-detailing-the-boards-with-rubble-mix/
My bolt action comedy moments are whenever I use my Bren Carriers. Two games I have fielded them and two games my own air observer has called down friendly fire and blown them up. Have made the decision that I am obviously not fielding enough of them and will be buying another when funds allow.
My epic bolt action moment happened to me twice, it was my U S reinforced platoon against the Germans, both were 1000 point games and in both games the German Tiger tank was raising havoc with my Americans until I brought in my M18 Hellcat. In one game it took a few shots to do in the Tiger but in the second game it only took one shot to eliminate the Tiger and from that point on my Americans do not go into battle without my M18. I only won one game but it was a lot of fun against the Tiger. Of course both Tigers were at a disadvantage because of the heavy anti tank and the Recce rule
random re-direction when rolling 1 for the artillery barrage makes my Home Guard happy 🙂
I’d like to tell my most epic Bolt Action moment, but since I haven’t won the starter set yet…
@lordbob how about an epic moment that the guys in the studio have had? 🙂
Buddy and I have been fighting for Europe for awhile, my SS vs his US grunts:
“The recon force from the 2nd SS had taken a small town and set-up in the church in the middle of town and posted a sniper team in a nearby building. Reinforcements were on their way as the Big Red 1 moved into the town.”
Highlights of the game included:
Rangers not losing a single troop while shooting it out with an SS unit accompanied by a medic.
A Nebelwerfer blasting an entire unit of GI’s from taking the church.
A B-17 dropping its payload and pinning half the German army!
When the smoke cleared the Big Red 1 had managed to take the church and whittled down the SS forces to a decisive victory.
Managed to win a game of Bolt Action without firing a single shot!
That was in mission 5 from the rulebook where you have to grab the objective from the middle of the table and bring it out.
Can’t wait for 2nd Edition!
This weekend I hosted a huge Bolt Action D Day game in my garage titled “The Barrage in the Garage”! One 12 ft beach board with a 3 vs 3 beach landing game on a custom built terrain board and another 1 vs 1 game on a friends Bercourt Manor board firing artillery onto the beach board with Easy Company trying to silence the guns. EPIC!
Nice changes. I can’t wait for my rulebook and starter set to arrive. I just wish I could find some players in Brunswick Ohio. I’ve played a few games, mostly against myself and would love to play against someone who enjoys it as much as me. But I do like the new MG rule. But still think the bugging out rule is dumb. I was in a tactical transportation company and we would never bug out. The co-driver would man the 50 cal and you stayed and fought. I still would now use the bugging out rule. Maybe force at reverse action.
Yeah, I’m not too sure about the “bugging out” rule either. It seems a bit cheesy. I like that MGs have received a buff. However, I’m still not sure that one extra dice and a boost in range goes far enough. It’s still 20pts for an LMG… Machine guns ought to be terrifying. It’s not a weapon you want to come under fire from.
I’ll have to play this new addition a few times before I come to a final conclusion on these changes.
Great video guys. As always, very entertaining.
I don’t know, I am on the fence about changes. Still don’t like the templates which at this point has more to do with needing extra stuff to remember to bring. I can already foresee games where the players forget which units were activated by the Officer and if they had already done something. Finally, I am also a little concerned that with that -2 for Down orders is going really make getting troops out of buildings really tough. Same for keeping a unit pinned down.
I think I am still going to hold off for a while as I have come to enjoy my own house ruled version of 1st edition.
Haven’t managed to play Bolt Action yet, but I’m close to having an 800 pt British Commandos force ready to go. New rules seem like the perfect time for it.
Enjoyed the video. Impressed enough to PreOrder the rules and Starter Set halfway through the video!
Great to see Carriers in use by John. Justin is just too lucky with dice rolling at times!
Chain of command adds a new dynamic that allows a full section or platoon to act as one!
All in all an entertaining and informative video! Keep them coming!
Well done that man. I love impulse buyers (they make me feel normal) . I Hope you have many hours of gaming satisfaction =)
Normal, you say? It’s the “shiny” syndrome I think 🙂
Got the Bolt Action Starter Set last year, about the same time as Flames of War Starter. Just starting to get interested in war games.
Got a FoW Rulebook half a year after that – not to mention DropZone Commander plus other stuff.
Beyond the Gates of Antares Starter Set next.
Just recently the Konflikt 47 Rulebook, German and American Starter Sets. Followed closely by a British 1000pt army with British Command and Rulebook ( as I’ve decided on doing a Commonwealth Canadian Platoon ).
And now, the version 2 . . .
Hi! My name is Jon. And I have a problem! 🙂
Hi Jon , I’m refusing to admit I have a problem =D
This:

D-Day, Omaha beach. The allies were brutalized in the water and at the shoreline but turn it around when the engineers flame the German pillboxes.

Bolt action Is on my bucket list.. The second edition looks interesting and tidier all round.
Couple of questions as I haven’t played much BA
Why didn’t John fire HE from his Sherman on the first turn at the anti tank team?
And secondly . You can run with a 105?
I’ve never actually played Bolt Action as Chain of Command is the platoon WW2 game of choice at the club I go to, so sadly no comments of interesting stories.
Do use the minis though, which are very nice.
@superfurrymaniac What’s your interesting story involving the minis? 🙂
I played a bit at Dragon’s lair comics and Games in Austin with some people who noted my interest in the models and invited me over.
I felt like the melee was a bit simple but I did enjoy cleaning up a fight that was going rather badly with a Bren-gun on a univ-carrier coming in from the side. I wish that there were some Portee trucks at work in the European theater because the idea of a truck with a six pounder rolling up, dropping a gate and firing on some target seems cooler on a game board than say a lend-lease M7 Priest doing the same thing. Also I wish there had been more motorcycles and armored car stuff going on even though that is probably not at all what taking back France was like.
I like the idea of Konflikt 47 but hope maybe a two-sited pulp variant might be in the offing with characters, maybe stand ins for the Unknown soldier, Haunted Tank, Sgt Rock, and other not quite super-hero but close 60’s and 70’s comic book style things.
i still remember my very first bolt action game i played my new jerrys against my friends commando force and in turn 3 he brought out a unit from reserves and it came on the tabe right next to one of my units and he let loose 10 shots at point blank range and all 10 shots missed due to him rolling 10 ones or twos :p a memory i will never forget 🙂
Looking forward to playing BA2 I hope that the missions have been improved. I’m very disappointed that Warlord couldn’t hold fire on the release of the Konflict47 rules to allow them to be used in conjunction with BA2. What was a great add on to a great game will be out of date as soon as BA2 is released.
looks like it’s house rule time again.
love my waffen SS flamethrower unit, did loads of damage against Warrens @warzan martians at the BA boot camp, even though he did try to probe them several times
Definitely a fan of the rules changes!
Loss of the -1 for shaped charge shots will make my bazooka teams more useful again, but even more happy with the change to the roll of a 1 on the artillery table given how often my forward observer managed that
Making MGs more potent is also a good move as the LMG felt a bit “meh” as a squad support weapon… Will certainly be adding some more MMG teams to my germans now though
U.S. MMG jeeps are going to be a hell of a thing now on the table 🙂
While in real life they were at best an inconvenience at worst irrelevant
I like the look of the new changes, of course it would completely change the way my epic moment played out.
I was playing a grab the intel game with my brother and he’d managed to keep my out on the flanks so he could grab the intel and hightail it out of there. Luckily for me the aim of his artillery was out (rolled a one) so I managed to drop it down hitting his HQ, Cromwell and two infantry units pinning them beyond hope of salvation and also killing his Observer in the process. Didn’t quite manage to steal the win but it was a great way to draw :).
Great game again guys, I feel sorry for John as the dice gods were not with him 🙂
Bolt action is the coolest historical game, bloomin love the way it looks.
I promise if I ever get any bolt action stuff, I will have epic stories to post on here about what happened, until then, I guess I can’t win any? =P
so my best bolt action moment, Fallschirmjager vs US Rangers only a small game though, with a couple squads each side plus other bits and pieces. The game was fairly even until about the second half when the americans started annihilating the germans. However the german medic was not to be defeated! Armed only with a pistol and entirely on his own, he took out the american command, wiped out a 5-man squad in close combat and killed several others and one the game. At no point in the game did he save anyone with the medic test, however he was unstoppable in the fight! Never has my dice rolling been so good and my opponents so bad, im usually the type of person who would manage to fail a test where i have 20 or so dice, and just one of them needs to be anything but a one, but somehow this game the dice gods were with me!
I’ve not played for a few months but the last game was with my British airborne against my mates Herr. I love flamers and I finally got to sneak my flamer team upto the building with a squad of 10 hun’s cowering inside. i managed to burn 5 of them, the rest ran away. My flamer ran out of fuel so he was taken of the board. It wasn’t a bad casualty rate of 10 to 1.
I am looking forward to 2nd edition. Hopefully it will be out in time for our club to start our escalation campaign.
Great game, knowledgeable umpire
That is Bull with the Transports at the end. This game is looking good. Now if only I can find people to play with…So many friends have Imperial Guard armies…
I have to say in the cosplay picture Jon looks so mad that Justin is the tank commander.
Really enjoyed this and what new rules we have seen here seem to have solved many of the niggles I’ve had with the game, Can’t wait to get my hands on it 🙂
I just bought a Japanese starter force with the intention of converting it to a konflikt 47 army, will have to try out bolt action when Its altogether
Great Demo Guys…
To Bad John Rolls as bad as I do lol.
As far as My best memory from a bolt Action game, they are all memorable as the random activation makes them all seem memorable it’s just a brilliant mechanic and the reason Bolt Action has become my new go to game atm.But if I have to pick one I’d go with German vs Soviet Demolition Scenario..where it went back and forth for 2 turns with each player seeing off by the skin of their teeth the opposing forces from their base and it coming down to the last move, last unit, and last roll of the dice and still neither side prevailing the best and most intense tie of any game I’ve ever played. Thanks for everyone involved in making this great game.
Nice demo, liked the table
Very nice introduction to the rules update. Chez is very good at calmly and clearly explaining how everything works. Great to listen to.
Still not a big fan of the templates, if I have to be honest.
I have been waiting for this for so so long!!!
Met Andrew back at Warfare last year – Really nice guy and that’s what I love the most about Warlord Games – they care about you not only as a customer but also as a person. I myself work for a company that prides itself on customer service and sometimes I’m even blown away with how good they are with their customers
Goes to show what you can do with a few bits of scatter/modular terrain – the board looked epic guys! really well done!!!
Ok I’m confused again. I am rematching this and Justin is issuing a run order to his machine gun team and they are crossing a hedge. Now I thought to cross an obstacle you had to advance to cross, Does this not count to an obstacle you are up against? I did notice this a few times in the last watching of the video but noticed it happens a lot
Never mind. Chaz just explained why
Will the next battle be titled ‘Saving Private Lyons?’ 🙂
I have to credit Justin with the craftiest move of the game when his lone observer bagged the two bren carriers. Fair play to John to keeping up the struggle and making life awkward for the Germans. I was slightly intrigued that he went for a Firefly in a mostly infantry fight. Maybe a standard M4 and some more infantry or support weapons would have been of more benefit. A marvellous sportsman like game played in good spirits.
A great game of Bolt Action and nice to see that most of the rule changes have enhanced the game. I’m still not convinced that one man with a rifle can scare off two Bren Carriers with 2 LMGs each.
Over to the game, I’ve fought with my Brits in many battle but always seem to have problems, worst one was in the summer campaign last year with the D-Day beach landing, lost one Sherman on the way into the beach along with two landing craft. The troops managed to get ashore only for our naval gunfire to come in too short and obliterate them. Glad to see the change in that rule.
Epic Bolt action moment was when my fiancee allowed me to pre order the Band of brothers BA2 starter set!
Thank you Sir … That made me laugh. Cheers

Another epic bolt action moment was when I played my Volksturm inexperienced infantry against a Vet Russian force on this awesome Battle of Berlin table. Very bloody game and finished on a draw! Wish I’d taken photos now! 🙁
Cool intro, gets me in the mood of playing 🙂
Great video, and just as the original BA demo got me to start collecting, I think this one will rejuvinate my interest.
I’ve only played a single demo game to date, and it was a long time ago, so I can’t actually remember who won. But I do remember the excitement and the tension of the squads of infantry facing off against each other acround a manor house of some description, gradually being pinned and whittled down.
Great fun!
You were not ignoring cover with your sniper unit ? Hopefully that was a mistake ? Looking forward to trying the new rules. I made a few notes of the changes from the vid and will introduce them next Monday down the club. Good to see LMG;s and MMG’s being more effective.
Rally order could be a double edged sword.
Great show guys .
I like the changes.
I only played one game with the D-day firefight set, but it was great fun.
We were already thinking of adjusting some things about the rules and they changed it so that is good.
Nice to see transports can still do something useful when they are empty just have to keep in mind not to leave them alone.
‘Bugging out’ is just a term being used on this video- I think it’s quite a good rule actually – and i like to think of them more surrendering rather then bugging out but maybe that’s just me
Awesome game, a lot of nice changes since the BA Bootcamp! 😀
Too bad the dice weren’t on Johns side!
I’ve not been playing long but this game really gets to the cinematic feel of WWII.
Best moment for me has been a small squad of my Panzer Grenadiers in a standoff with a Russian flame thrower team. They both got in behind hedges on opposite sides of a road. The Germans overcame some pinning set set an ambush but failed to kill the emerging Russian team as they legged it across the street and roasted my squad.
Ouch.
I love the cinematic feeling of Bolt Action!
Favorite bolt action moments? Love sending my marines forward in LVTs, disembarking and putting the enemy in close combat. Real world tactics brought to the table makes me smile so much when it works
I really like these little changes to the rules. They improve the flow of the game. Good job Warlord.
Like the changes
Perhaps a template for the flamer
Nice battle. And gratz @dignity .
I haven’t played BA and only know these battle reports and the locked and loaded show but I think the new rules seem to streamline the whole game. Even the templates are not that much of an issue. Sure it’s one difference to othe titles gone but I think it’s more “realistic” and logical.
And this game proved something I allways thought about BA. It is more about Infantry than about tanks.
Can’t wait to get my copy and stomp on my sons’ German army with my American ETO guys! Looks like our gaming group will be upgrading.
Seems to be some nice changes made to balance the game a little better and it was good to see a couple of differently put together forces facing off against each other.
@justin I do have to ask the shoulder badge reading corps seem to be back to front in the photograph or am I losing my mind?
The image was flipped.
My favourite moments in bolt action were from my first game that I played. At 500pts I was running a veteran British force against my opponents horde of Russians.
The first dice of the first turn went to my opponent who swiftly obliterated my one tank, that pretty much defined turn 1 and all my future deployments “don’t deploy tank in the open”. Turn 2 we encountered flamers in heavy armour, this was where my veterans seemed to fall down as there were to many units to deal with and I didn’t have enough fire power to reliable beat through the heavy armour. By turn 3 we had learned that the flamers were slow and pinning markers kept them out the way. Turn 4 we met the wrath of artillery and not to stand still to long.
Believe it or not I didn’t win that game, but every part of it was great fun trying to get off the back foot after a catastrophic loss at the start. Every mistake I made was a lesson in strategy that I carry with me still. I think the best part of losing is knowing that you tried, I was very happy my opponent didn’t let me win just because I was new.
Ah, I know that face John! Nothing like rationalising the use of cool but more expensive units on the basis they are tough enough to make their points back.. only to have that advantage immediately taken away by some cheeky git who is good at rolling sixes 😉
Putting a hole through the front of a T-34/85 with a lucky shot from my Puma and getting three out of an original ten SS Cavalry across the battlefield, under withering fire, to kill my opponent’s medium howitzer – both in the same game – may have been my most epic Bolt Action moment(s)!
Happy times with my son.
A troop of 8 American airborne stormed a panzer IV and successfully destroyed it. Then my German sniper took out the NCO in revenge and they were mown down and routed by an mmg team in a building across the street. It was like something out of Saving Private Ryan. The changes to the game look excellent. The carriers and half tracks not being able to fire their weapons if they weren’t carrying troops always seemed unfair to me, so that’s a welcome change.
Great battle report.
Epic moment? Just watching a sniper take out every support weapon in my army. Man I hope they changed that rule. 🙂
Hi there, does anybody know if tank war is now part of the rule book or if it is still it’s own book. Because aside from the German army book no other books will get updates. At least that’s what I read on the Warlord homepage. But in the video it sounded like tank plattons are now a regular part and not something extra. Thanks anyhow!
In an early war scenario, my little Panzer III faced off against 2 TP7 tanks and 2 anti-tank rifle teams. Their shots failed to destroy my panzer while it took them out one-by-one — each with one shot, one kill. It was the little German tank that could, and cleared the way for a German Victory =)
awesome! the slight modification seems cool and more “historical”, always find that MMG/HMG didn’t do enough damage 🙂
can’t wait to buy a starter set !
I’ve been sitting on the fence for ages with Bolt Action, I think the second edition is going to give me the push I need.
Now that wie also have Konflikt 47, it seems a must to start with ba too.
Well played, Warlord 😉
Looking forward to giving 2nd ed a go. An epic game? Why it would have to be my British paras defending against a German horde. My rear guard were pinned to heck and back, but a German unit strayed to close and the resulting lucky assault ended with a dead grenadier squad. Getting another action before the Germans could act (the assault was the last dice of the turn) and obviously fired up by their victory the repeated the assault into another squad. Luck was certainly in their favour, but they certainly lived up to their nick name of Red Devils in that game, going from the unit I expected to die as the Germans over ran my position, to become the focal point of the counter attack. Great game.
On a rules note, it is nice to see the change to flame throwers, as they were far too good before (especially that pesky Russian ot34!)
i like all the rule changes makes a lot of sense, maybe just me but i thought all team weapons could only move 6 but i saw all of them except the pak40 move 12 is this a new rule as it was not mentioned also the flame thrower crew have they dropped the out of fuel rule as that wasn’t done either unless i missed it just thought i would mention it 🙂
Great demo, good to see the new rules in action.
My epic Bolt Action moment: After having a section of British paras wiped out by 10 assault rifle wielding SS my left flank was collapsing. My officer and his offsider had only one course of action, Assault! using harsh words and SMG’s they managed to kill 3 and send the rest packing. This is a moment we still laugh about today.
One of my best moments was while playing the ‘kitty hawk down’ mission from season 3. We were playing on a great table with lots of bocage, which meant my air FO had trouble getting good line of sight to the enemy. On turn 3 he managed to get himself through the maze of bushes and ran into a central building with good view of the advancing British forces and prepared to call in an air strike.
Turn 4 arrives and the kitty hawk begins it’s descent….we roll for position. …and it crash lands directly on the centre of the house with the FO, killing him instantly with the explosion!
well. I was not going to start another game system but this cold be my nr14! I really like it!
My most epic moment was playing D-Day Omaha beach. We had a 12′ long table with cliffs, bunkers, landing craft, aircraft, and tons of infantry. A separate inland table depicted Airborne troops fighting to take out 4 artillery guns that got to fire on pre-ranged beach points each turn.
Recently we had an interesting game (3rd game I have played, btw). 2000 pts aside. 2000 pts of Germans vs. a combo British / American force (1000 pts each)
British – 2 man HQ 1st LT. / 2 man Fwd Arty Obs / 1 Sherman V (veteran)/ 2 10 man rifle squads / PIAT team / Med mortar team / MMG team
American -1 2-man HQ 1st LT / 2 10-man infantry squads / 1 8-man Ranger Squad (w 1 BAR & 1 MMG), 1 lt mortar, 1 MMG, 1 Sniper team & 1 Sherman M4A1 (vet)
German A team: 1 2-man HQ squad / 2 10 man infantry squads w/ LMG & SMGs / 1 sniper team / 1 med mortar w/ observer / 1 LeIG 7.5cm infantry gun team & 1 Pz 3 M.
German B team: 1 2-man HQ squad / 2 10 man infantry squads w/ panzerfausts, LMG, SMGs each / 1 MMG team / 1 sniper team / 1 med mortar team – no observer / 2 SdKfz 251 halftracks / 1 STuG 3G w shurzen
The scenario was to recover a set of enemy plans in the middle of a small French town.
The game started out with the units of both sides deploying on their sides. By turn 2, the British Sherman commander drove up to the crossroads and looking to his right saw 2 units of German infantry plus their Oberleutnant trotting behind a Pz 3M for cover. Needless to say, he started to panic as a panzerschrek team was trying to move up on along a 2 story building as cover to get a nice close range shot. The building also attracted a German MG42 team in the grounds behind the house which fired and pinned an American infantry squad. The German mortar spotter and a sniper team also occupied the high ground on the top floor of the house and they were making the Allied side miserable, having claimed 3 men out of a British infantry unit. They also took out the radio operator of the forward artillery spotter’s team leaving the arty observer by his lonesome. Since most of the Allied guys were using cover on our side of the table because of the withering fire, we were reluctant to move forward into open ground where the MG, sniper and mortar fire could be concentrated.
When the arty officer got his turn to activate, he dropped the arty spot on the house!!! When the next turn came, one of the German players risked it and moved an infantry squad into the house to fire down at the Allies in cover and ended turn 2.
Turn 3 the artillery arrives and Jeff (the British player) rolls 6 to hit (I think) and a 5 & 6 on radius (11′) of the barrage. It DECIMATED the German infantry squad in the building (2 men left out of a 10 man squad), killed the MMG team in the courtyard, the sniper team and the German mortar observer. It also gave 2 pin markers on the Pz3 and the German HQ unit which were directly adjacent to the building as well. The Allies luck had turned and in the same turn, the Sherman, in the confusion of the arty barrage, disabled the Pz 3.
Rallying quickly, the Germans rolled in two halftracks with accompanying panzer grenadiers to contest the objective. They were taken out by an American bazooka team and a British PIAT team respectively. Both units took a DOWN as they bailed out of their burning SdKfz 251’s.
Unfortunately, the game had to be called for reasons beyond our control (emergency kid injury) , and the Allies took the day. It was too bad we couldn’t play to the end because who knew what was going to happen next.
Bolt Action is a GREAT & FUN game. We are looking forward to the 2nd edition release.
I really think the changes I saw during the game really help the mechanics flow better. If I am not mistaken, from what I saw in the game, the changes to officers activating units, explosion templates, armed transport firing one weapon system, improved machine guns, cmmand checks/pin removal all help to improve game flow. I am very excited fot this and the new Konflikt ’47. Good times to be a gamer!
Remember a game where we were playing with about 4 players (2v2), 3000pts a side, lots of armour and oodles of infantry. My Germans were defending the outskirts of a village in Normandy in the wake of D-Day, with a British force assaulting over an open area of fields and roads.
Preliminary bombardment had been quite effective at pinning my guys – I had a Puma that barely activated as a result of the pins on it – which left my lines in disarray as the British advanced. But I did have two Tigers, and an 88. I’d positioned one Tiger on the left, one in the centre, and the 88 was set up covering the right of my lines.
From turn 1, the British fixated on the Tiger in the centre, firing every piece of equipment capable of penetrating armour at the German machine. Sherman Fireflies advanced through the fields, supported by infantry, blazing away at the Tiger in the centre. The pins mounted up, but not one shot penetrated the armour.
Turning the Tiger into a bullet-magnet had worked unexpectedly in my favour, as the unmolested 88 started picking off Shermans and Cromwells. The Tiger on the left sat patiently in reserve, waiting to strike.
My opponents knew they had to silence the 88, so they sent a flanking Commando team to deal with it. They came on the table on my right flank, and with the support of mortars, started to suppress the 88. My team-mate sent in the infantry, a squad of Panzergrenadiers, to counter this attack. They took out the Commandos in return for heavy casualties, but the damage had been done. They’d silenced the 88 by killing the crew.
While all this was happening, our German officers were running around trying to rally units pinned by the initial bombardment back into the fight. A pair of British artillery observers were undoing all that good work with a pair of heavy artillery strikes that were crippling German response. My team-mate, who was in control of an infantry platoon and attached assets, was really struggling to get units activated with all the pins being done.
It was time to commit the 2nd Tiger to the fight. No attack had come from the left, almost everything the British was being committed to our weaker centre and right. It rolled out of the prepared cover in the town outskirts, and swung right behind a copse of trees to keep the left side covered from the British lines. It opened up on the remaining Shermans in the fields, popping one. This fight could still be won.
My Puma crew finally took their brave pills and activated. It trundled up the road in the middle of the battlefield, to the edge of the town, and blew up as a PIAT team on ambush got a lucky shot. About this time the right flank was wavering even more as British mortar fire found a target, crippling a squad of Panzergrenadiers.
With one Tiger suppressed to the hilt with all the fire it was taking, the 88 gone, infantry shredded or holed up, and the Puma having been entirely ineffective, it all hinged on my remaining Tiger to hold the line. Sadly, one of my opponents knew this, and he delivered a killing blow. 3 Cromwells had remained on the centre right of the British line, to my left, shelling the pinned Tiger in the centre. They now turned and raced towards the 2nd Tiger. One came head-on, one came around the woods, while the 3rd raced past heading for the town. My Tiger obliterated the Cromwell coming head-on, but the 2nd managed to get a crippling shot on my tank, leaving it immobile. Unable to move, it could barely defend itself as the 3rd Cromwell came about and put a shell into the Tiger’s rear, brewing it up.
With that, it was game over. The German defence had essentially collapsed, and the town fell to the British. All-in-all it was a bloody excellent game, and had served as a demo for the other 3 players. They all enjoyed it hugely, which as seasoned Chain Of Command players I hadn’t really expected. But, by creating a big set-piece battle with lots going on, I’d differentiated enough to get their attention.
It also taught me that Tiger Fear can exist in a game. Your opponent will genuinely fear the chaos a Tiger can dole out, and concentrate on destroying it as soon as possible to the detriment of all else, allowing you to execute your plan relatively unhindered. My central Tiger did little in the game, but it soaked up so much enemy fire that it more than made up for its hefty points value.
Not watched it yet but as long as they fixed LMGs in squads and made big tanks worth taking, I’m a happy guy.
Most epic moment in BA so far.. opening the starter set box and staring at all that sweet plastic.
Yeah, I haven’t played anything bar “training” games yet.
I only wish they’d have gotten rid of the transports surrending rule. One FO gets two Bren Carriers to surrender?! Never liked that rule.
Really looking forward to V2s release. Great to see some of the changes ahead of time.
Very nice game. I like the rule changes so far. Looking forward to playing a game myself!
Saw the game yesterday. Very nice video – gameplay as always.
Seems like the changes will keep the game moving a bit more and balance out the game. Still need to kill those flame throwers before contact and now there is time to do so, that is better.
Best Bolt Action moment was then I was play German vs US with a friend. I Had a big US infantry force, but they where all inexperience except my sniper team (veterans). My friend had a very strong German veteran infantry force. I expected to be crushed but my sniper team took out his officer, all squad based LMG teams and some NCO’s. My sniper team won the day for me 😀
Very nice!
Loving the rules revisions. Can’t wait to give it a go.
Most of my Bolt Action moments are only epic as in ‘epic fail’. 🙁
In the last campaign our club run at our club, my british commando force was infamous for not only losing every game but being completely destroyed each time as well! By the grand end of campaign “throw all your remaining units into a big 6player melee”, I was barely able to scrape a couple squads together. Still great fun was had though. Looking forward to 2nd ed.
Actually one game of BA springs to mind………
I remember a game where I had a unit of Russain Conscripts that WOULD NOT DIE!!!!!!!!!
They ended up holding an objective building about 1/2 way through a game. My opponent had already beaten up a regular infantry unit that was previously holding it.
Facing the conscripts were a command squad of 1 fig, and 1/2 a unit of regular Heer.
Well that unit of conscripts drew so much fire as my opponent tried to pin them out of existence. It ended up with so many pins that I didn’t dare issue any order other than down to the squad. My opponent was suffering with his 1/2 unit of Heer being pinned from my MMG across the other side of the board that he kept failing his orders to clear the conscripts out of that building.
It all wen ton for a few turns until I finally failed to save a casualty roll and lost a figure, I needed to roll a 4 on the morale, and for once actually made a roll that meant my unit didn’t run for the hills.
Ended up with me winning caused by a unit of conscripts that never fired a shot in anger, never caused my opponent a negative effect, it just refused to die.
All was a matter of being in the right place, at the right time (not being an example of tactics by myself, more a matter of complete accident). 🙂
Bolt Action (and now Konflikt 47) always looks fantastic. I’m just on the fence on whether to buy into this or Infinity. Can’t afford both and torn on which one would be better.
Best bolt action moment for me was when my opponent gloated about their German half track before the game began.
Pulled the first dice. It was mine!
My strategically placed bazooka team given the fire order. Rolled successfully and boom! No more German half track…. and one annoyed Wehrmacht commander!
🙂
Winning!
I always love your battlereports! They are played with painted miniatures on a great looking board. The game flows well…the sound is great, the lightning is great and most of all it is a great friendly atsmophere…just as enjoyable gaming experiences should be!
Love the Bolt Action game and look forward to plunge into it (and Konflikt’47) as soon as possible!
Back to Normandie! Currahee!
While not always epic for me, it’s fun to watch my bamboo spear fighters dive head first into a unit of Gurkha. Let’s also not forget the joys of taking out armor with some Kamikaze lunge mines. I just love the flavorful troops.
I already pre-ordered my copy (the book only). I started to play this game just three months ago and I love it!
so after 3 months of sh**ty doctors and loads of drugs and not being able to walking properly. bad back and leg pains, having loads of Germans and Americans to paint, would help with the pain. turns out I have 3 slipped discs.
Well…. actually I haven’t played Bolt Action yet, so no story to share. But I’m definatly getting in to it! Wouldn’t it be nice to start with Band of Brothers? 🙂
so when is the “preview” video going to be posted that then mentioned several times?
Too bad Konflict didn’t come out as 2e… Guess I’ll have to invest $100 to get both then.
My best game only came two weeks ago when our club put on a Battle of the Bulge game for a group of Czech scouts on a visit to the UK
My yanks were defending Bastogne from the Jerry onslaught Inc units dressed as Americans
Held the town till the last turn but only just
Fantastic game and the visitors seemed to love it and the snow themed board went down very well
I always enjoy using getting the last die and firing a mortar, then getting the first to fire it against the same target to get the improved hit bonus. Great for flushing out snipers from buildings
Is it possible to see lists?
Love this game. I need to get my forces painted up.
Now, this was cool. I like the changes, they’re reasonable.
My epic moment in a BA game was actually my whole first game of BA. So many epic mistakes.
My friends and I have really enjoyed Bolt Action, we can’t wait to get 2nd ed to the table.
The match was fun to watch, but my favorite moment would have be Justin taking both transports with his forward observer.
It was a extremely smart move and you could tell John was completely taken off guard, “There are words to spring to my mind Justin, but known of which I can say on camera.”
Dreamed about a german Heer force, probably now is the time…
Hope the Boot Camp is for BA II
Love all Justin fist pumping in this friendly game. Every video of bolt action I watch I think makes the look better. With the Konflict expansion its only on the way up.
My favorite moment of Bolt action was from the BoW Bolt action boot-camp. During the tank war game they had set up i was alone where two teams fought to hold capture objectives and the one with the most objectives at the end of the game won. So on my flank with my T-34-85 against a German Stug we’ve been slugging it back and forth the entire game and the last turn was coming up. So i made a mad dash up to the objecting and capturing it for my team but i also managed to immobilize my opponent during my shooting action. Thus securing the objective from him driving up and capturing it. The next turn my tank did blow up but since he could not move the objective still did belong to my team and securing our victory.
I like the game and the changes seem to work well. I love the new artillery rules and it is so funny wit the rounds falling on your own head, poor John
My favorite moment was Justin`s uncanny ablity to roll 6`s and the look on Johns face when he does it repeatedly..
Loved the video, my favorite moment in Bolt Action is when my German sniper held the line against my friends British squads. He hit 6’s on two turns in a row killing the squads NCO causing them to miss and then retreat. I still lost the game but it was that epic moment where I did not let them pass.
First game I played on Bolt action, 1500 pts of Americans vs. Americans(Training Mission) had a capture the center mission. In the first three turns it was held by my opponent and I could not get the two units in the building out. Fourth turn I attack it with a inexperienced infantry squad, losing all but four guys in the combat. I then reinforced the squad with another inexperienced squad to hold out on three more attacks at the building in the last two turns. Last turn the four guys on the top flour had to beat six guys. Last die roll ended with me holding the building with four kills to two. I won combat by two and he failed his morale check, I passed mine. I rolled for continuing of game and it had ended. It was a close game and later found out that it was played wrong, but I still had a great game and enjoyed learning more on how to play the game. That first game is what hooked me on Bolt Action over 40K. I still play GW games on occasion , but now it is all Bolt action mostly.
I can’t say there was any single moment with it, but my favorite game of Bolt Action was playing the Volga Crossing scenario out of the Osfront book. I was playing the Germans and my friend was playing the Soviets. I heard that game was a little too challenging for the Soviets at 3:1 German to Soviet points so I went 2:1. Especially since my friend doesn’t really play miniature war games except with me. The whole game felt like a microcosm of Barbarossa to Stalingrad.
At first, I felt like the Germans were going to absolutely crush the Soviets. For the first couple of turns I ran roughshod over the table through the streets of bombed out Stalingrad. My only concern was a couple of AT rifles which could take out my transports. The Soviets were having issues as German Stukas rained fire upon their transport boats on the Volga off table not allowing the Soviets any reinforcements.
Soon, I found the rubble and debris in the streets slowing my advance along with snipers pinning down my transports. The Germans would have to march on foot the second half the table (the game is played with the players deploying on the short table edges). No matter I thought, as the Germans had plenty of rounds to close the distance to prevent the Soviet from gaining a foothold in Stalingrad which if allows to happen could result in a prolonged rattenkrieg. Even if the German veterans managed to take a few pins they would easily shake them and keep moving being the superior trained soldiers.
However, as the game progressed, the Germans advance slowed then came to a halt. Those veterans wouldn’t budge as the Soviets suppressed them more and more. All the while more reinforcements came across the Volga. If the Germans didn’t hurry and capture the docks soon, then they never would.
In their rush forward the German Force’s strength was continually ablated. One trooper here, an another there, all seemed fodder for the Red Army machine guns. While none of the German units were completely destroyed, none of the squads were over 50% of their starting strength. Some were down to only a couple of men. As for the Soviets, it seemed every time the German wiped out one unit, two more took its place.
At the end of the game, I had a squad almost within running distance of the objective. However, I realized that they just didn’t have the strength to assault through the Soviet forces protecting it to capture it. My other forces had the same problem in addition to the game just not having enough rounds left to win. The Soviets had ground the German blitzkrieg to a stop. This would be the Axis’s high water mark. The Germans would travel east no further. There was no land east of the Volga for either side.
This game was also my friend’s first win in Bolt Action which he roundly deserved. He spent much of the game with less than average luck on the dice (pretty typical from him) and despite that, his forces continued hold their ground even with me having pretty good luck to start. I wiped out his Naval squad in assault despite him having nearly twice the number of attack dice. This scenario also played to each of our strengths. Me, being more comfortable on the attack, while he likes playing defensively.
Historically, inspired games like this rocket Bolt Action to my favorite miniatures war games. I like it because it is fast and easy enough for non-gamers to grasp while still having enough to it to feel like a cinematic version of World War II. While as a pick-up miniatures game it falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. I just don’t have much interest in what if encounters or blue-on-blue games. I think it is strange that I like more the more traditional style of wargaming where one player hosts the game doing the research and putting together the forces involved to try and get an even game while using a more modern points-based rules set.
This was a fun demo game. 🙂
Looks like I better start digging for coins in my sofa to save up for this boxed set.
I always wanted to get into BA using 1/72 minis, but recently I’m more and more drawn to 1/56.
Thank You for the battle!
Playing Bolt Action is better than watching the movies and safer than doing battles in reality 🙂
liking the changes that I have seen so far.
Favourite moment? Which one? Definitely has to be my first game where a Sherman M4 bore down on my last surviving grenadier and against all the odds he fired his last chance panzerknacker and managed to destroy it dead. Immediately after he was shot to shreds by the advancing US riflemen. No tea and medals for Helmut. But it made for some very cinematic gameplay. This got me into Bolt Action much to the wife’s disdain.
I love the smell of Bolt Action in the morning
I don’t own Bolt Action so my best Bolt Action moment would be winning Bolt Action 🙂
Great game, well played guys
Great demo game and i’m liking the look of the new rules, most epic moment i ever had was in a local tournament using my British, turn two had my Artillery come in and as my opponent had bunched five of his units close together it hit all five then I rolled sixes for 4 out of the five units and wiped out a medium machine gun team, a jeep a light howitzer and killed most of a 10 man squad witch then ran away, following this my opponent rolled for his air strike and rolled a one which resulted in him blowing his own tank up.
I’ve been waiting for 2nd ed for a long time 🙂
Hey guys. Just recently looking into this and doing research on what army/s to collect. In doing my research I’m a little confused about the flack after watching this. Where does it say the bren gun carriers have flack? The rule states any pintle mounted weapon has the flack rule, but bren gun carriers arent pintle mounted in the rules or have the flack special rule. Have I missed something?
Ah yes, reminds me of the ‘golden age’ when BoW put out great in depth content of historical wargames. The old FoW series were some of the best.
a great game video guys i was thinking they had Mulligan commanding the artillery for this one?
Ah, finally time to get into BA.
Good to rewatch this (except the artillery roll @johnlyons, Ouch!!). I really miss this type of content on the site, I appreciate that it’s been impossible over the last few years (Damn you COVID!!) but would be good to see some more once life returns to some semblance of normality.
I miss Bolt Action =(
