Bolt Action Locked & Loaded – Club Games Vs Tournament Games
January 22, 2016 by dignity
Welcome back to Bolt Action Locked & Loaded where we get to grips on building your army for a club game versus doing so for those all important tournaments.
Do you load out your army with heavy armour or do you like to run with a whole bunch of infantry? Is there a big different between casual play lists and tournament lists?
Come Backstage for Bolt Action Locked & Loaded XLBS where we discuss how to use Medics in your games of Bolt Action.
What do you guys think?

5:43 – “They know their stuff inside-out better than I do! No they don’t, really.” I gotta agree with those one 99% of the time. At least most tournament players I’ve met know the rules inside-out, how to exploit them, where the exceptions are, how to exploit the exceptions, etc. Every point in their armies are chosen not for any kind of historical accuracy, but simply to meta-game their way to a win. Not saying there’s anything wrong with that, it’s just not me.
Most people who know this history have a love for this history. You have to learn it yourself, no one will teach it to you properly, certainly not any gaming books (although a precious few will give you a really good start in the right direction). So those who know will almost :by design” have a love for it, which means their army is built for it as opposed to “tournament efficiency.”
I’m sure there are exceptions. 😀
And then there are players like @dignity – who just play for fun! 😀
6:44 – “I’m out!” Classic. 😀
@kommissarboris has posted a lot of 28mm Soviet in the historical forums, including some great battle reports. I had no idea he has quite such a large Soviet force. That’s how it is with the Soviets, though. “Go big or go home!”
Is Justin drunk???
Gosh, I really want to get stuck into a new game and I’m crossed between Bolt Action, Flames of War and Kings of War. All three offer their own USP, although, hearing the great points raised in this video about building your army I’m steadily being pulled towards going with Bolt Action.
As a note, I’m new to Beasts of War and am taking my time to really get to grips with all the different offerings each game has to offer without jumping in half haphazardly. Measure twice, cut once (hence my dithering) Thanks for video guys.
I play a lot of BA but I’ve not played in a tournament yet. If I did I would lean towards plenty of infantry with AT capability. as troops generally win games. A good all rounder medium/light tank. weapons teams include Medium mortar, flame thrower and a sniper. Definitely fit in an Artillery or air observer.
There is a Bolt Action tournament coming up Feb 20 at the Beachhead show in Bournemouth. Come along and join in the fun. Tickets available here….. http://entoyment.co.uk/beachhead-2016/4588774837.
First off Bolt action is one of my favorite games 🙂
Right now I am focusing on Soviets but I have forces in in USA, UK, USMC, German, IJA and IJN. I like Historical forces where possible. I can play around 2K standard games with all of the above forces. With the Soviets I am currently expanding them for Tank War and can play much larger. When I put my army lists together I tend to base them on fire units and maneuver units. With the Soviets this is easy for each rifle squad I include a PPsH squad(sub-machine gun). For each tank a tank rider squad. Never leave home with out a ZIS 3 as this gun can win the game for you, good HE as well as good AT. If playing tank war make it a battery of 3. I am theming my force for the relief of Leningrad and early ’44. This gives me a lot of flexibility and access to one of my favorite tanks the KV-85. This is important as my primary opponent like to play with big cats. I also include a few veteran/guard units of infantry as they get access to panzerfausts. As I make my list I literally visualize the role for each unit. If I can’t it doesn’t make the cut. The Soviet Army book and the OST Front book are both full of great choices.
Anyone even slightly interested in the Eastern front should pick up the OST Front Book as I consider it the best supplement to date. It has new units for both the Germans and Soviets plus rules supplements.
